Funny enough, even though SR2 is one of my top 3 favorite game worlds of all time, my first experience with the game was almost as bad as yours.
The GM had us walking through 'a city' in the middle of the day. While crossing a puddle-filled parking lot he told us that we were attacked by a Kracken. Three of the five of us ripped up our character sheets and left.
Luckily, my second SR2 experience was far more awesome :)
You had a piss-poor GM. Shouldn't you be saying, "my worst Role-Playing experience" rather than worst role-playing game?
Chummer, as a lover of SR2 your GM, not knowing how to run a game at all, also knew nothing about the game world he was running. Second edition is set in 206X, and the whole point of playing Shadowrun is to play a "Shadowrunner", the smegging opposite of a cop. Cops don't even exist in SR2, they've been replaced by 3rd party security firms.
Sounds much more like a "worst GM ever" than a critique of Shadowrun itself. It's not like the rulebook says "Remember, toilets and traffic jams are important parts of life, so force your characters to play these out despite their desire to have fun." Maybe it's time to stop playing with that terrible GM?
lol I actually used this video as inspiration for one of my Shadowrun games. The characters got stuck in a traffic jam after a chase. Unsurprisingly, the rival runner team caught up and ensued a firefight in the maze of vehicles while their cars blasted "vintage" 80's Guns N Roses music. Easily one of the most fun encounters we ever had in a Shadowrun session :)
I don't think laxatives could be any worse than lizard hookers and demon transports doing the nasty. I seriously had a GM that had those things in a game. I feel your pain, Gentleman.
I've been meaning to comment on this gem of a video for some time. I've got to say I had to pause this a couple of times because I was laughing to hard. I'd never heard of this game of "Traffic & Toilets" before. I don't know why but something about the way you got so worked up even describing the game just makes it even better! So sorry that you had to suffer through that but thank you for sharing it with the rest of the class. This was great!
@SlightlyNotorious lol one time I used Third Edition to re-enact the Lone Eagle Incident, as well as Bug City. When it comes to rules I don't think any edition is unsuitable for any timeframe so long as technological changes in the game world and how their rules work aren't forgotten... except for when it comes to Fourth Edition; THAT just might stay in the 2070's, Chummer! ;)
That's one of the most hilarious stories I've ever heard. I was dying from laughter. Sorry, but that GM should never be allowed near a gaming table again.
Shadowrun is an awesome game, but what the fuck in shadowrun you're supposed to play the runner not the police. The gm is really bad, maybe is was his first time.

I got started in RPG's playing Heroes Unlimited. I don't disagree with your opinion at all, lol. I didn't know any better at the time. Sometimes, I wonder how I ever stuck with the hobby. I'd totally play it again, though. Mostly for nostalgia.
This should be titled "The worst compaigns I've ever played in" if you aren't talking about the game and mechanics and are referring to how much fun you did or didn't have based on the GM and the group as a whole.
There is a way to make a connection between victims through their automobiles. I would leave tire tracks in the scene. Through a small investigation the PC would discover that the tracks belonged to each of the victim cars and each of them are very high profile.
Then the options for the MO would be:
"Hates the rich"
"Seduces rich and steals car"
etc etc
Their in two minutes i thought of a better idea then that guy.
I think for role playing sitting in traffic you were using the wrong system. I would recommend. the white wolf spin off game. "Commute, the gridlock" Also I think the GM's depiction of the Birmingham police force was spot on realism.
It is "Space 1889". You said 1899. Shadowrun is a good game; maybe the individual circumstances of your game went sour. A good GM keeps things moving or jump-cuts to action like a movie. The only time something ever happened in a car was when Agents J and K helped an alien give birth to a squid in MEN IN BLACK. But my favourite cyberpunk game was CYBERPUNK 2020.
Its not a fair assessment of the game or its mechanics because you had a most terribly GM. On top of that you said he had done the same thing in another game.... You said it yourself. So why blame the game?
@TheREALIzludez Who's blaming the game? This was the worst RPG I've ever played because of the guy running it, but it doesn't stop it from being the worst RPG I ever played. All RPG experiences are subjective and entirely based on the experience of the players.
Heroes Unlimited was my first RPG. I agree that the rules are horrible, but I do still have a soft spot for it. Probably for nostalgia reasons. I just wish Palladium would overhaul their damn rules.
@clackclickbang I love the pulpy feel of it. I just have a thing for simpler, fast systems. Hence liking SW and WoD a lot. Unfortunately, I can't find a non d20 (3e and 4e) game within a 50 mile radius of me. :( I don't hate d20, but it's like having chicken for dinner every night for 10 years. You're gonna get sick of it, especially when you really love other stuff. I really would love to give BRP a try.
Shame on you. Shame for playing with that same gm. :0). You know, there is something we never discuss as role players, but it's always there: not everyone is smart enough to GM. Not everyone can create believable plots with interesting scenes. It hard enough to do that in fiction, harder still when you aren't controlling the player characters. This hobby demands a degree of intellect and creativity that not everyone possesses.
Wow... Shadowrun is my favourite RPG of all time, your GM clearly butchered it. I played in a Shadowrun game (and later took over as GM) for a game that lasted 7 YEARS! playing once a week. We started with 2nd Edition then moved to 3rd Edition (which is much better) but didn't advance to 4th Edition as we didn't like the Matrix changes. You are seriously missing out on a great system if you're stuck with such utterly awful GMs.
Oh my lord...ohhhh....I'm typing this ...right now, at 6:03 AM, Chicago-time....to let the Gentleman know that this video has destroyed me. I have sat on my couch the last 2 minutes laughing, and laughing, totally tearing up ....and finally, mustering the strength, in between waves of side-splitting laughter....to get up and race cross the room to pause the video, so I could collect myself.
Why ? The bit where he's describing the laxatives...is INSANELY funny. The best part- he stays calm !
Hells bells man! This makes me want to fly to the UK just to give you a proper Shadowrun game experience. And maybe beat the hell out of that GM while I am there. Wow....
I actually commented on your video for your pathfinder campaign on quality of GMs being tested when the GM has to improvise. obviously, this GM you had to "play" with is, well, lacking...
If nothing else, this must have been a good learning experience :)
That was the most entertaining tale of a roleplaying session I have ever heard. It must be truly harrowing to be part of the Birmingham police force in 2023. I'm afraid I must ask a horrible question; did the DM actually PLAN that battle against chronic diarrhoea, or was the entire hospital and murder set-up just a half-arsed attempt to get you away from the crime scene?
@UltraEgg98 Nope, the GM did not plan the chronic bowel disruption in advance. The hospital thing got out of hand for him (he didn't expect us to make the moves we did) so he just made up a load of random bollocks on the spot.
I have not laughed that hard in years! Please, you have to tell everyone who this GM is. Maybe you could interview him for us and ask him what he was thinking. Please interview this guy I have got to know.
@DangerRuss666 1.) He's integral to the running of our club, 2.) he's a friend, 3.) people are always worth giving another chance. I'm sure in a couple of years I'll try playing one of his games again, just in case he's improved.
there are a surprisingly a lot of bad gms compared to bad players....although that could just be down to the fact there are far more players compared to GMS's ive played a campagin that was completely based on resident evil one, yeah didnt take us a great deal to swoop through the game with any effort even though this greatly annoyed him its kind of an example of no imagination sounds like this guy
While I agree that this all sounds bad, you haven't know "bad" in terms of RPG unless you have played with one of the DM's I had the pleasure to be exposed to. This guy had no imagination, no grasp of what would work in a game world, no knack for storytelling, and every adventure of his was a rip-off of some movie or game...sometimes even an adventure we had played the session before...and that almost to a T. I could tell you some of them, but that would require writing a small novel here. :)
@peri2502 I don't know... I'd say this was fairly bad. I've played awful games before of course, and this one isn't *necessarily* the worst. Pendragon is up there as truly awful, and that was being run by a complete fool. At least this GM is a nice guy.
That GM sounds like the ballz. I guess you've learned not to play any of his games in the future. Getting burned twice like that from the same guy is bad.
@woodwwad I'll never say never. He's a good bloke and a good player. Every person should get the opportunity to run from time to time, even if their games are less than brilliant.
This whole fiasco reminds me of a "gaming horror-story" that I read on the web a few years back about the surreal experience a few guys had with Deadlands. If I can ever find it again, I'll post a link. It is so horrendous that you'll wonder if it isn't fiction while simultaneously breathing a sigh of relief that at least it wasn't you who had to experience it first-hand. Worth reading, much as your horror-story was worth watching!
@Serkath His plot prep consists of writing down a story and hoping we follow it to the letter. If we don't he starts flailing in the wind, not at all able to cope with all this deviation.
@smilz58 As explained in my Festivus video, I'm taking a brief break from X-Com over this period so I can concentrate on gifts, writing and various other things. X-Com will definitely return though.
Sounds like a really inexperienced gamemaster... boredom is something that can kill a one-shot game in particular, as that boredom cannot be used to build character depth. I could see myself enjoying a game in which my character gets stuck with one or few others in a traffic jam or the elevator etc... as long as it happens in a campaign, and there is a chance for dialogue, because it's quite fun to find out how the character behaves in situations like that.
@Nylonbeast Inexperienced? Quite the opposite! He's probably run more games than me, but alas has a reputation for not being able to think outside the box. His games go brilliantly when you follow the plot he has in his head exactly. As a player he's quite good fun.
I am the "Andy" in question and I can attest first hand to the consistent ineptitude displayed by the GM here. I'm a relatively new gamer but still found this to be a train wreck of the slowest order.
I deigned to leave at the Faeces section of the game as the night was getting on and I was getting annoyed.
What I should point out is, that The Gentleman Gamer and I have developed a wonderful repertoire of 80s hits and are available for weddings/birthdays/Bar Mitzvahs.
Oh dude. That sounds as bad as my old DM which gave us a 'fair way out' of certain death which was something we had a less than 5% chance of being able to do. I would have called bullshit after the magical car knowledge.
lmao, you are far more patient than I am. I'm sorry you had to go through such a horrid session! Unfortunately, GMs have the power to make almost any game a lot of fun or a complete nightmare. Some GMs make the problem of coming to game sessions very unprepared, and any GM that doesn't care much about player involvement like that isn't a good GM, in my opinion.
My experience with Shadowrun has also been unremarkable. Nothing as grotesque as yours but just nothing that made the game stand out to me.
The one time I attempted to run it (3rd Edition), the PCs were interesting and they were having fun with the setting and story but the rules were just too intrusive. I recall that one of my players was playing a Mage, so I picked up the magic supplement and recoiled in terror as I read through the labyrinthine rules. Sold it almost immediately afterward.
@clackclickbang I haven't yet. I may get an opportunity just after the new year as one of my groups is losing a player. In the ensuing chaos as we decide how to continue forward and who to bring on to replace him, I may get an opportunity for a one-shot session (which will be Bioshock Infinite if I have anything to say about it!). I will keep you posted!
What a dreadful experience! Certainly the right/wrong GM can make even terrible games fun and awesome games into ass.
I am a testament to the fact that even games like Synnibarr can be entertaining. A friend ran 2 sessions of Synnibarr several years ago and we had a crazy-fun time. Ghastly game system yet, somehow, he made it engaging and exciting the the over-the-top, mad-as-a-hatter type of way that is typical of the game.
@clackclickbang "Polish a turd" is about the greatest compliment I can give to Synnibarr. If a GM has even managed to take it that far, it's a feat of humbling proportions.
Needless to say, that GM was excellent no matter what game he was GMing/playing and he is dearly missed from our table.
@VoraxTranstellaris (cont'd) i.e. time seemed to move at different rates in different parts of the game, with me and my friend stuck in a particularly slow-moving part, as if we had to wade through thick pudding.
@VoraxTranstellaris Well I'd agree if some of us were decking or doing research, but there were no Shadowrun elements in this game at all, excluding the dwarf and elf in our group.
@clackclickbang In my case we were just driving in our semi-tank while other memebers of the group were occupied elsewhere.
Now I understand that sometimes relative pacing is tricky to get right but if that happens to me I listen to my players and fix it. In this case we were just told by the GM to be patient.
Just felt funny this also happened in a Shadowrun game.
@sboxjunk Hm, I did once make my players roll to see which of them had to go to the toilet first in a Call of Cthulhu game, but that was because the order in which they'd pass through the hallway on their way to the toilet was important to the plot.
@clackclickbang Are you going to have a tentacle come out of the toilet drain?
I didn't have the players roleplay their actual visit to the toilet. They were just supposed to overhear something going on in a room they happened to pass by on their way to the toilet.
@Nejira Well as a player he's pretty damn good. He's always enthusiastic, never afraid to have his characters risk danger, and always puts his best effort in. When he wants to run we occasionally let him on the off chance that he may issue a nugget of gold. It apparently has been known.
@clackclickbang Perhaps if you let him run something prefab and relatively linear it could be good. What qualities would you say he *does* possess as a GM, if any?
@Deckof51 Exciting isn't a word I would use to categorise this purgatory, but I'm glad you found it to be an experience. Should we ever rp in real life, we shall have to attempt to do Shadowrun justice.

Not everyone can create believable plots with interesting scenes. It hard enough to do that in fiction, harder still when you aren't controlling the player characters. This hobby demands a degree of intellect and creativity that not everyone possesses.
DeepEndOfTheDicePool 4 months ago
@DeepEndOfTheDicePool I couldn't agree more. Some folk just do not have that capability.
clackclickbang 4 months ago

@TornadoCreator I agree. I've played Shadowrun before and enjoyed it, but this session was diabolical.

UltraEgg98 8 months ago
@UltraEgg98 Nope, the GM did not plan the chronic bowel disruption in advance. The hospital thing got out of hand for him (he didn't expect us to make the moves we did) so he just made up a load of random bollocks on the spot.
clackclickbang 8 months ago
I have not laughed that hard in years! Please, you have to tell everyone who this GM is. Maybe you could interview him for us and ask him what he was thinking. Please interview this guy I have got to know.

there are a surprisingly a lot of bad gms compared to bad players....although that could just be down to the fact there are far more players compared to GMS's ive played a campagin that was completely based on resident evil one, yeah didnt take us a great deal to swoop through the game with any effort even though this greatly annoyed him its kind of an example of no imagination sounds like this guy
TheUlock 1 year ago
@TheUlock I once ran a game based on Resident Evil... I hope you weren't one of my players!
clackclickbang 1 year ago
While I agree that this all sounds bad, you haven't know "bad" in terms of RPG unless you have played with one of the DM's I had the pleasure to be exposed to. This guy had no imagination, no grasp of what would work in a game world, no knack for storytelling, and every adventure of his was a rip-off of some movie or game...sometimes even an adventure we had played the session before...and that almost to a T. I could tell you some of them, but that would require writing a small novel here. :)
peri2502 1 year ago
@peri2502 I don't know... I'd say this was fairly bad. I've played awful games before of course, and this one isn't *necessarily* the worst. Pendragon is up there as truly awful, and that was being run by a complete fool. At least this GM is a nice guy.

That GM sounds like the ballz. I guess you've learned not to play any of his games in the future. Getting burned twice like that from the same guy is bad.

Webhead123 1 year ago
@Serkath His plot prep consists of writing down a story and hoping we follow it to the letter. If we don't he starts flailing in the wind, not at all able to cope with all this deviation.

clackclickbang 1 year ago
Sounds like a really inexperienced gamemaster... boredom is something that can kill a one-shot game in particular, as that boredom cannot be used to build character depth. I could see myself enjoying a game in which my character gets stuck with one or few others in a traffic jam or the elevator etc... as long as it happens in a campaign, and there is a chance for dialogue, because it's quite fun to find out how the character behaves in situations like that.
Nylonbeast 1 year ago
@Nylonbeast Inexperienced? Quite the opposite! He's probably run more games than me, but alas has a reputation for not being able to think outside the box. His games go brilliantly when you follow the plot he has in his head exactly. As a player he's quite good fun.
clackclickbang 1 year ago
I am the "Andy" in question and I can attest first hand to the consistent ineptitude displayed by the GM here. I'm a relatively new gamer but still found this to be a train wreck of the slowest order.
I deigned to leave at the Faeces section of the game as the night was getting on and I was getting annoyed.
What I should point out is, that The Gentleman Gamer and I have developed a wonderful repertoire of 80s hits and are available for weddings/birthdays/Bar Mitzvahs.

lmao, you are far more patient than I am.
Though, good video! That was hilarious. XD

@BlackHorsePaladin I would say this GM suffered from both failings, and it was a shame, as I was looking forward to a game of Shadowrun.

Webhead123 1 year ago
@Webhead123 Shame. Shadowrun has its good points. Alas, this game consisted of none of them.
Did you get around to running Bioshock?
clackclickbang 1 year ago

Would I ever play Synnibarr again? Probably not.
Webhead123 1 year ago
@Webhead123 I recall you mentioning Synnibarr and your success with it before. Proof that you can truly polish a turd.
clackclickbang 1 year ago
@clackclickbang "Polish a turd" is about the greatest compliment I can give to Synnibarr. If a GM has even managed to take it that far, it's a feat of humbling proportions.
Needless to say, that GM was excellent no matter what game he was GMing/playing and he is dearly missed from our table.
Webhead123 1 year ago
Hm, sounds like another case of what we've named "the pudding zone". Typically, this also happened to me in a Shadowrun game.
VoraxTranstellaris 1 year ago
@VoraxTranstellaris (cont'd) i.e. time seemed to move at different rates in different parts of the game, with me and my friend stuck in a particularly slow-moving part, as if we had to wade through thick pudding.
VoraxTranstellaris 1 year ago
@VoraxTranstellaris Well I'd agree if some of us were decking or doing research, but there were no Shadowrun elements in this game at all, excluding the dwarf and elf in our group.
clackclickbang 1 year ago
@clackclickbang In my case we were just driving in our semi-tank while other memebers of the group were occupied elsewhere.
Now I understand that sometimes relative pacing is tricky to get right but if that happens to me I listen to my players and fix it. In this case we were just told by the GM to be patient.
Just felt funny this also happened in a Shadowrun game.
VoraxTranstellaris 1 year ago
Oh jeez. That really did make me 'lol'. Roll for shitting. Brilliant. Sounds like a bad GM
sboxjunk 1 year ago
@sboxjunk Hm, I did once make my players roll to see which of them had to go to the toilet first in a Call of Cthulhu game, but that was because the order in which they'd pass through the hallway on their way to the toilet was important to the plot.
VoraxTranstellaris 1 year ago
@VoraxTranstellaris That could actually be a rather good revenge on the GM/player, when I run Cthulhu...
clackclickbang 1 year ago
@clackclickbang Are you going to have a tentacle come out of the toilet drain?
I didn't have the players roleplay their actual visit to the toilet. They were just supposed to overhear something going on in a room they happened to pass by on their way to the toilet.
VoraxTranstellaris 1 year ago
@sboxjunk A terrible GM, but an enjoyable player. He's a decent chap, but can't hold a game together for shit (ho ho).

clackclickbang 1 year ago
That´s just horrible. I never experienced any RPG I that bad (knock on wood). Why do you keep playing with that GM?
Nejira 1 year ago
@Nejira Well as a player he's pretty damn good. He's always enthusiastic, never afraid to have his characters risk danger, and always puts his best effort in. When he wants to run we occasionally let him on the off chance that he may issue a nugget of gold. It apparently has been known.
clackclickbang 1 year ago
@clackclickbang Perhaps if you let him run something prefab and relatively linear it could be good. What qualities would you say he *does* possess as a GM, if any?
VoraxTranstellaris 1 year ago
And this RPG outright SUCKS. Poor hooks, bad comedy and a GM who DIDN'T CARE. Your righteous indignation makes it exciting to experience however.
Deckof51 1 year ago
@Deckof51 Exciting isn't a word I would use to categorise this purgatory, but I'm glad you found it to be an experience. Should we ever rp in real life, we shall have to attempt to do Shadowrun justice.
