Is Grigolo supposed to be the best Italian Duque?... for sure not!!! the voice is not even enough for a lighter role. Perhaps he was the right choice for this production because any other half way acceptable tenor would have made Domingo's shortcomings more obvious.

This is one of the most difficult and beautiful tenor arias in the Italian repertoire. Grigolo has been excessively criticized for lacking a "voce verdiana", where many other tenors have faired much worse. I find that he has a beautiful tone and a thoughtful, nuanced style which makes him the best choice for this movie-opera. Obviously, there are better voices (Albelo, Vargas, etc.), but Grigolo really "looks" the part! Watch him in the other famous arias, and you'll see that he does well.

@kawai1 I think so too. Yes, I've heard better singing, but this is a movie and one should look at overall impression. In a movie one should look at everything - music, scenery, acting and yes looks too. It's a beautiful film, and it's one of very few movies based on operas produced recently. With the average age of opera-goers being in the 60s, a movie like this can well bring more young people to opera.
