  • "I stand corrected" A phrase that only reasonable people utter.

  • @warnation101 Only those willing to accept maybe there are other explanations. Both liberals and conservatives never say this. Because they're never wrong until they actually see or realize it.

  • their like, the devil the devil!!!

  • Most of the people in that crowd lost their heads...

  • All the Enlightenment is contained in this short but beautiful scene.

  • This is what it must have been like when the spaceship to the moon was launched-people gathered together experiencing a sense of brotherhood with each other in the achievement of reason and science. This is what mankind has the potential to be.

  • I love it how the final sound is a pigeon in the next scene.

  • Based on the look of John Adams face when saw the balloon float up, I bet his jaw would hit the ground if he saw the moon landing or robots exploring Mars!

  • Can you imagine living in an era where one would find amazement in a hot-air balloon? Wonderful clip!

  • Seeing this at that time must have been like the most awesome thing ever... The people who were there must have been really amazed... If I had a time machine I think this would be the first thing I would like to see...

  • This was the happiest part of the movie, right before the oncoming storm and violence of the French revolution and coming back to a quarrelsome government

  • this was the final question for jeapordy last night :)

  • I think I might too have a bit of faith in mankind as Jefferson did. Despite his faults, he is very inspirational and just is a man of greatness.

  • @TheJoester1992 Jefferson had faith in white people, not 'mankind'. He thought native americans were savage sub-humans, and africans little more than apes.

  • @maureenOWW

I hate to burst your bubble but Jefferson really wasn't an exception back then.

A lot of people, if not most people, thought like that.

For their time, guys like Jefferson were brilliant, progressive people. That doesn't mean that we haven't come a long way since then.

  • love jefferson's smile

  • this captures the spirit of the enlightenment

  • The opera is "Orfeo and Euridice" by Gluck. Very likely they were there, as it was (and is) a very popular opera.

  • Does anyone know the name of the opera or ballet that the Adams attend in Paris with Jefferson?

  • Band of Brothers, and John Adams, the two greatest mini-series ever made.

  • Absolutely beautiful. I watched this on HBO and fell head over heels. I bought it on the first day it was available and promptly forced everyone I know to watch it :)

  • John loses to TJ once again... sorry Mr. Adams. Dillane has a beautiful smile doesn't he?

  • He certainly does.

  • Does anybody know whether John Adams's presence at this event is historically accurate?

  • of all the great scenes in this miniseries, i enjoyed this one the most. something about it made me love it from the firt time i saw it, and i could watch it all day. thanks for posting!

  • Why are they singing? According to 1776, our Founding Fathers should be singing. This is ASININE.

  • I love how eloquent Jefferson always is.

  • @gretchenpc 'how eloquent Jefferson always is.' Particularly when hes being racist. eg.: 'Are not the fine mixtures of red and white preferable to that eternal monotony of black which covers all the emotions of the other race? Add to this, flowing hair, a more elegant symmetry of form, their own judgment in favor of the whites, declared as uniformly as is the preference of the orangutan for the black women over those of his own species. ' He goes on like this for several pages. Black = Ape.

  • @maureenOWW ..It was the mid-set of the times..Don't be so jaded.

  • Quite possible the most beautiful scene ever created.

  • Superb.

  • I love this scene. I recorded every episode of this mini-series when it first aired. Anyone who has studied Thomas Jefferson knows that he truly loved science; it was his "supreme delight." I love his reaction to the balloon flight because he looks genuinely enraptured. I wish there were more scenes from the series on YouTube. Where are all of you fans? Come on, post more videos!! Please!!

  • I'll work on it. I already have the intro of Ben Franklin on my request list. :-)

The sad part about the whole thing is that there are *so* many great scenes from this miniseries, it's hard to decide which ones to post!

  • where can i watch the mini-sereis i dont have HBO

  • dvd set is out

  • There faces, when the Balloon just so out out this world to them.

  • That was so cute, thanks for sharing!

  • I love this scene. ^_^

  • This is fantastic!
