@TheBlankThought I'm going to be honest with you. I have NEVER watched any of the TMoHS episodes ever. I have however, read about this movie, and the plot was very interesting, as it was about Kyon finding himself in a world where Yuki Nagato (who is reclusive in the original world) is human and has emotions. Today was the first day I watched the movie, and now I'm watching Season 1 of the series. The soundtrack, plot, and character will make you emotional like I did. It's WORTH IT.
@TheBlankThought It's not a strong enough story to make a good movie out of it. The first 20 minutes or so is just the same old thing you could have observed throughout the series. It did not astonish me, but I do not consider it a bad choice to watch.
Best trailer ever! BeSt MoViE eVeR!!! I've watched it at least 5 times :L getting it for Christmas too :3 I just wanna cry at the music they play in the trailer tho, gets me everytime D': anyone know what its called ?
@TheJoakimProductions You have more will power than I. I stayed up until 5p.m. when I had to work 10p.m. to 7a.m. that same day to watch this movie when I got it in the mail. (Blu-ray / DVD combo pack). I have had it for less than a week now, already watched it 3 times, lol. I can at least say, it will be well worth the wait.
@jinwooc12345 I would have been crazy from the moment I found out my club members where really a alien, esper, time traveler and not to forget a godlike being (or perhaps really god). If it was me in Kyon's situation this movie wouldn't even exist. The story wouldn't have gone past episode 4 of the series xD
I loved this movie so much! Thank you, Bandai, for bringing it to the U.S.
On a separate note... that piano song was also used in the 2nd season of Community, during the last scene of the episode that was an homage to My Dinner With Andre. :)
I love how trailers for anime don't actually tell you anything about the story of the movie itself. I get so sick of watching trailers that give away everything that it's kinda cool to watch a trailer and afterwards you can actually still watch the movie.
One second Haruhi is there with everyone at the christmas party, then in the next few frames it shows Akasura back in school, Yuki doesn't look so autonomous and Haruhi isn't in school.
@EdgelessTitan I get the impression you've seen "Disappearance"; I haven't. Watching this for the first time doesn't give me enough information to give you a detailed run down of what happens in the anime, what the story line is etc etc. The point I'm making is that the majority of movie trailers that you see these days tell you practically everything, to the point where you don't need to see the movie anymore.
If you like anime, the I would recommend Melancholy very highly.It's very funny, emotional, mysterious and all around great in my opinion. Just be wary of Season 2.
I've finished watching the series way, way back and I haven't seen this, is this the same or different from the series? And is it sad and contains some dramatic moments?
@TheOldschoolflip just watched it at AWA. It was an excellent movie. Yes its a story within the canon, and its mostly dramatic, but Kyon still provides his jackass remarks.
I will admit I had only seen the first four episodes of the show before watching this(had done alot of research first) and I liked it. Was anyone else freaked by -Redacted- popping back up?
Great move filled with fun...I SOOOO should have watched this in theaters when I had the chance. tsk...Can't believe I blew it away...but either way I still watched this fantastic movie.

@PassTheGrenadePlease Well, I think it would be almost as enjoyable if you haven't seen the episodes yet, but I think you should watch them because then you'll get to know the characters and setting more, and you won't have to worry about not understanding how certain things work.

Yeah, yeah call me a little bitch this shit almost made me cry when I saw it lol. Didn't expect that as the series was much more "happy go lucky" than this movie.
@Prinnynation Yeah I find it strange how they haven't added a DVD case on those sites. But they already did push it back before. Supposedly it was suppose to come out in July 25th. But then they announced it in a couple of Expos and Conventions, that it will come out Sept. 20th.
So strange. Was on my computer and then I heard this music on the TV near me, I like instantly spun around jumping out of my seat yelling "THATS THE DISAPPEARANCE OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA TRAILER MUSIC!" and, to my embarrassment, It wasn't an ad for The Disapperance of Haruhi Suzumiya but an Ad for Classic Wildelife on the Wildlife channel. I was disappointed.
I heard that same song in an American commercial. I forgot what it was for, but a couple was going out and the wife had a red dress. The commercial reminded me of this movie!
So did I! - I just got it and watched the English dub of the Blu Ray this weekend. - I loved it! - Crispin Freeman was magnificent.
However, I will have to watch it a few more times before I love it as much as the original Japanese - that one was just so powerful in the actor's portrayal, tied in with the soundtrack and situations - in my opinion of course.
I like the Eng.dub. but I've seen it in the original Japanese language [at least 4 times already] and that will Always! be my favorite version.
Just like the TMOHS series, I prefer the original Japanese, but I will watch the Eng.dub. of this as well.
Unlike [Example] K-ON! I think Bandai totally missed up with this one, but I also own K-ON! on blu-ray, so I guess that's all that really matters you always have the option for both languages. ^_^
@KuroWings41 not on the comp screen actually. if your laptop has a HDMI USB, you can hook it to the TV and watch it there. BTW, I have watched this on full quality (1080p) japanese version, damn you must see the picture!
@KuroWings41 Honestly, when I look at this trailer it makes me all emotional. The music is so sombre, yet so peaceful. Just hearing it makes you feel how much Yuki cares for Kyon in every possible way.
@nerosonic I COMPLETELY agree!!! it's so beautiful.....and I like ur view on the meaning:) Also, Nagato got a taste of "feelings". So...she changed the world:)
@KuroWings41 the past-self assumed it was a 'bug' but Kyon is right about refusing. her future-self chose that fate since she saw all the annoying, irritating, and agonizing things Haruhi was doing to Kyon. so she thought the so-called club paper would help bring the peace, but surely Kyon's sub-conscience kicked in at the end...
@TheMightyFruit - I pre-ordered ''The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya'' in August from RiteStuf!.com for 2011.09.20 (Sept.20th) delivery date [Blu-ray 2_dics Eng.dub.]
They sent me an email today saying they shipped it on Aug.31st. Now I can't wait till it arrives in the mail Super Early! ^_^ :D
I just picked this up from the Jpop Summit this past weekend. They had a Bandai booth there and they were selling this for a cheaper price and weeks before the release date which is September 20th!
@Tman102792 Lol :), Yeah of course its based off the Light Novels haha. But there is also Manga, that was released as well. The thing about the manga though is that it really doesn't go into depth unlike the Light Novels, So I prefer the Light Novels haha.
@EcksEII Well, if you are aware that the series is based on a series of novels that is still going, you realize that there isn't any closure because it's not over yet.
@suejei You can probably find it in a Local Book store, or go on to Amazon and find it. I think the Price for the book is around $8 to $10. I'm not really sure, but that's how much I bought the Manga for and I'm pretty sure the Short Novels should be in the same price range.
I actually prefer the voices in english. Not only tht I can understand them, but they sound better in my opinion (high pitched Mikuru sounds wierd in english though)
@leoszt How is it a Violation? Please Explain :).
Also, I gotta say, of course people want the English Dubbed Version, You have to realize that a lot of people are used to the language that they're used to, that being said they want to see a character speak English. But also, it's hard to believe people can give crap to the dubbing in these series, I mean Crispin Freeman Portrays Kyon exactly the same way on how Tomokazu Sugita does. As well as Wendee Lee portraying Haruhi.
but after I get used to the original version, as conceived by the original development team (who are japanese or whatever), I just cant hear another voice coming from the character's mouth and go okay with it.
Its another personality, another point of view. I wish I could understand japanese, so I could read the original scriptures (talking about manga and suff).
I can say this, because I dont stand watching northamerican language movies with dubbed audio.
@DragonzXTruth (...) american movies with audio dubbed in portuguese. I would rather watch it with subs or eventually with no kind of translation at all, since I can understand most of english forms.
thats my point.
But its a cultural matter, your country has a dubbing tradition (just as Italy for instance). Mine has a 'subbing' tradition. We would rather mantain the original 'work of art' (the audio which is 50% of movie's intentions) untouched from 3rd party hands (dubbing studios).
@DragonzXTruth (...) It seems "cleaner" and more respectfull to just render some words together with the image, you can understand everything, and still listen to the original audio, thus the original speech intended by the creators of the movie/anime/tv show and etc remains too, untouched.
But yeah, most of the time I can't stand English dubs for reasons like, (Their Pronunciation, The Expressionless Lines the say in certain scenes, also The way how the portray a certain character with a wrong voice) But I have to say, The Melancholy's English VA's actually do pretty well with each of the things I stated.
But your point of the respect to the original Movie, by just adding a simple CC is very understandable, thanks for explaining.
@mrronsico I know that. But I'm a person who can love both English and Japanese Dubs though. It's just the reasons I stated with English Dubs, annoy me but I can still sit there and still watch the English Dubs. And lately I've been watching a lot of English Dub Anime, and a lot of them are actually pretty good with their Expressions, Pronunciations etc. So of course there's nothing wrong with Dubs, I like to hear the Language I learned and grew up with anyway.
@DragonzXTruth I love Japanese dub of Haruhi, but I might actually prefer English dub. Like you said, the English cast does an EXCELLENT job. I swear, Mikuru in English sounds excatly like Mikuru in Japanese, but in English...if that makes sense. Anyway, i love the English dub for this anime.
@DragonzXTruth I agree, same with Koizumi. Johnny Bosch does Itsuki so perfectly and similarly to Daisuke Ono sometimes you think they could be related...I hate people who don't give English dubs a go. Sure 4kids is rubbish most of the time but companies like Bandai and Funimation sure do provide some badass dubs.
@Emmma360 Oh ikr, and Michelle Ruff and Minori Chihara, doing Nagato's voice. Their speech patterns are so similar, that their voice acting are just perfect for her. And also, yeah I agree with 4kids but the thing is their censors are just so stupid, for example they had One Piece and instead of using real guns they were water guns. But yeah, I find it funny that people don't give English Dubs a try. I mean if its their first language why not give it a try you know?
@DragonzXTruth Definitely, and Michelle Ruff is one of my favourite voice actors because she can do a wide range of different voices. Most voice actors are easily recognisable, but she does a great variety and still pulls it off awesomely. For example, she's Yuki but she's also Yoko from Gurren Lagann which surprised me because she sounds so different. ~ Exactly, I mean it didn't take me long to get used to English dub. I still love Japanese equally, but its no good hating on English dubs.
@Emmma360 Yeah, the Japanese Dub for almost every anime, (I say almost because some I hate haha ex. Dragon Ball Z) will always be good. But people would be surprised on how well English Voice Actors do I mean many animes done in Engish Dub are just well put together and well translated also the lip flaps when they talk are usually almost/or just perfect, for Example The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya haha. But yeah either if its Japanese or English they are equally great!

@DragonzXTruth Yeah, but ofc I have some animes I prefer the Japanese dub because like I said they were dubbed by 4kids therefore ruined, ie, Tokyo Mew Mew. Terrible choice of voice actors, completely changed the characters names and completely replaced the theme song. But, yeah, I'll give any English dub a go because a majority of them are brilliant :)
@leoszt - I know what your getting @ with the violation content thing as being not what the Director intended & I agree with that part.
But Bandai acquired the License to this film from Kyoto Animation with thier blessings & a lot of $. So in a way Kyoto said here's the film & go ahead and dub. it.
I will always prefer the original Japanese language over English of course. But even I get lazy with reading & a lot of hard work into this, so I hope it's worth it.
I was looking for good anime movies since i've seen so many and i passed by this one and was like ehh.. but now it actually looks good.

why would it not be a popular song with the Japanese or with any other society? It's a very calming/soothing song to listen to wouldn't you agree?
With the amount of stress Japanese have in school/society...I would imagine this being a wonderful song to listen to every now and then.

@ArronLegend - Pre-order @ Bandai or Rightstuf for release date 2011.09.20 [Sept.20th].
I pre-ordered mine in mid August & received it on 2011.09.02 [Sept.22nd].
I've already seen it 5 times :D

@quigon87yt
JediPrime7 4 months ago
@JediPrime7 LOL, I agree there!.

I'm really looking forward to it....I already see that the art is wonderful<3 and the music is great too:D
KuroWings41 5 months ago
@KuroWings41 Honestly, when I look at this trailer it makes me all emotional. The music is so sombre, yet so peaceful. Just hearing it makes you feel how much Yuki cares for Kyon in every possible way.
nerosonic 5 months ago
@nerosonic I COMPLETELY agree!!! it's so beautiful.....and I like ur view on the meaning:) Also, Nagato got a taste of "feelings". So...she changed the world:)
KuroWings41 5 months ago
@KuroWings41 the past-self assumed it was a 'bug' but Kyon is right about refusing. her future-self chose that fate since she saw all the annoying, irritating, and agonizing things Haruhi was doing to Kyon. so she thought the so-called club paper would help bring the peace, but surely Kyon's sub-conscience kicked in at the end...

This was in no way shape or form based on a manga. It is based on a light novel. Does the world hate books so much that they can't accept that!?
Tman102792 5 months ago
@Tman102792 Lol :), Yeah of course its based off the Light Novels haha. But there is also Manga, that was released as well. The thing about the manga though is that it really doesn't go into depth unlike the Light Novels, So I prefer the Light Novels haha.

@MultiAnimeShows The thing about the manga is that it is a crime against humanity.

@suejei You can probably find it in a Local Book store, or go on to Amazon and find it. I think the Price for the book is around $8 to $10. I'm not really sure, but that's how much I bought the Manga for and I'm pretty sure the Short Novels should be in the same price range.

you guys really want to watch a english dubbed version?
Dubbing is such a violation of the original movie as conceived by the directors.
Can't you just read the tiny text below, just like the rest of world does with north-american movies.
(which happen to be dominant over other culture's movies)
leoszt 5 months ago
@leoszt
I actually prefer the voices in english. Not only tht I can understand them, but they sound better in my opinion (high pitched Mikuru sounds wierd in english though)

@leoszt Violation? Fan Dubbing is a violation!!
JRakajoey 5 months ago
@JRakajoey well, maybe violation is a much too strong word, and of course they do have permission.
I meant it in a more conceitual way.
leoszt 5 months ago
@leoszt How is it a Violation? Please Explain :).
Also, I gotta say, of course people want the English Dubbed Version, You have to realize that a lot of people are used to the language that they're used to, that being said they want to see a character speak English. But also, it's hard to believe people can give crap to the dubbing in these series, I mean Crispin Freeman Portrays Kyon exactly the same way on how Tomokazu Sugita does. As well as Wendee Lee portraying Haruhi.
DragonzXTruth 5 months ago 21
@DragonzXTruth I dont know man,
but after I get used to the original version, as conceived by the original development team (who are japanese or whatever), I just cant hear another voice coming from the character's mouth and go okay with it.
Its another personality, another point of view. I wish I could understand japanese, so I could read the original scriptures (talking about manga and suff).
I can say this, because I dont stand watching northamerican language movies with dubbed audio.
leoszt 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth (...) american movies with audio dubbed in portuguese. I would rather watch it with subs or eventually with no kind of translation at all, since I can understand most of english forms.
thats my point.
But its a cultural matter, your country has a dubbing tradition (just as Italy for instance). Mine has a 'subbing' tradition. We would rather mantain the original 'work of art' (the audio which is 50% of movie's intentions) untouched from 3rd party hands (dubbing studios).
leoszt 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth (...) It seems "cleaner" and more respectfull to just render some words together with the image, you can understand everything, and still listen to the original audio, thus the original speech intended by the creators of the movie/anime/tv show and etc remains too, untouched.
but that is just my opnion :)
leoszt 5 months ago
I get it haha, I understand your point of view.
DragonzXTruth 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth thanks for listening
leoszt 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth honestly, there is nothing wrong with dubs, whats the use of listening to japanese if you don't even know what they are saying! -_-
mrronsico 5 months ago
@mrronsico I know that. But I'm a person who can love both English and Japanese Dubs though. It's just the reasons I stated with English Dubs, annoy me but I can still sit there and still watch the English Dubs. And lately I've been watching a lot of English Dub Anime, and a lot of them are actually pretty good with their Expressions, Pronunciations etc. So of course there's nothing wrong with Dubs, I like to hear the Language I learned and grew up with anyway.
DragonzXTruth 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth cool man :D
mrronsico 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth I love Japanese dub of Haruhi, but I might actually prefer English dub. Like you said, the English cast does an EXCELLENT job. I swear, Mikuru in English sounds excatly like Mikuru in Japanese, but in English...if that makes sense. Anyway, i love the English dub for this anime.
shiningwizard327 5 months ago
@shiningwizard327 Haha I thought I was the only one who thought that also xD. Yeah I love how Stephanie Sheh does Mikuru :p.
DragonzXTruth 5 months ago
@DragonzXTruth I agree, same with Koizumi. Johnny Bosch does Itsuki so perfectly and similarly to Daisuke Ono sometimes you think they could be related...I hate people who don't give English dubs a go. Sure 4kids is rubbish most of the time but companies like Bandai and Funimation sure do provide some badass dubs.
Emmma360 4 months ago
@Emmma360 Oh ikr, and Michelle Ruff and Minori Chihara, doing Nagato's voice. Their speech patterns are so similar, that their voice acting are just perfect for her. And also, yeah I agree with 4kids but the thing is their censors are just so stupid, for example they had One Piece and instead of using real guns they were water guns. But yeah, I find it funny that people don't give English Dubs a try. I mean if its their first language why not give it a try you know?
DragonzXTruth 4 months ago
@DragonzXTruth Definitely, and Michelle Ruff is one of my favourite voice actors because she can do a wide range of different voices. Most voice actors are easily recognisable, but she does a great variety and still pulls it off awesomely. For example, she's Yuki but she's also Yoko from Gurren Lagann which surprised me because she sounds so different. ~ Exactly, I mean it didn't take me long to get used to English dub. I still love Japanese equally, but its no good hating on English dubs.
Emmma360 4 months ago
@Emmma360 Yeah, the Japanese Dub for almost every anime, (I say almost because some I hate haha ex. Dragon Ball Z) will always be good. But people would be surprised on how well English Voice Actors do I mean many animes done in Engish Dub are just well put together and well translated also the lip flaps when they talk are usually almost/or just perfect, for Example The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya haha. But yeah either if its Japanese or English they are equally great!
DragonzXTruth 4 months ago

DragonzXTruth 4 months ago
@DragonzXTruth Yeah, but ofc I have some animes I prefer the Japanese dub because like I said they were dubbed by 4kids therefore ruined, ie, Tokyo Mew Mew. Terrible choice of voice actors, completely changed the characters names and completely replaced the theme song. But, yeah, I'll give any English dub a go because a majority of them are brilliant :)
Emmma360 4 months ago
@leoszt - I know what your getting @ with the violation content thing as being not what the Director intended & I agree with that part.
But Bandai acquired the License to this film from Kyoto Animation with thier blessings & a lot of $. So in a way Kyoto said here's the film & go ahead and dub. it.
I will always prefer the original Japanese language over English of course. But even I get lazy with reading & a lot of hard work into this, so I hope it's worth it.
The Anime debate continues :D
