  • Your camera takes some good videos. The scenery is beautiful. You should try it out during a good sunset or even a sunrise. Nice!

  • *Dies of boredom and disgust*

  • Filmed in south Canberra, ACT.

  • please tell me where you filmed this i hear crows and other birds from australia near dorrigo ?

  • damn you live in a fuckin nice area man

  • lol growing up in canberra was pretty boring but nice scenery fer sure

  • Is this the camera without any attachments? Just out of the box in different modes?

PS - the cinemode looks amazing!

  • Yes - apart from 2nd cinemode with FCP notation - this was processed with FCP filters to add touch of contrast and saturation that I feel cinemode lacks. Prob with cinemode is it's noticeably soft on HD displays, rumour is it's = sharpness -5 on the Canon XH-A1.

  • Deck the halls fa lalal lalala laaaaaaaaa

  • k so youre toggling the effects on the camera itself?? not post production. right?

  • yes - Except the 2nd Cinemode that mentions FCP correction that tweaks. In fact I forgot to label the untouched cinemode with precedes the FCP one (after Contrast +1)

  • once the video is loaded move the progress bar to and fro and watch the different effects .i think the shot looks more natural in cinemode lust like in movies ....it looks more professional

  • How do you change this settings?, I'm unable to change contrast or colour from the HV-20 menus.

  • on the side of the camcorder, there is Auto and P. Move the slider to P.

  • I have this camera and I think it's a good deal for the money. Now that the hv30 is coming out the price on the hv20 should drop even more.

  • great camera for the money! plus its super portable!

  • Thank YOU!

Would you recommend this over the XL2 for someone who is a amateur.?

  • No I wouldn't but it's a difficult decision because a SD XL2 is going to teach you so much more about AV production than a HV20. However, it's a dilemma outlaying for new SD unit with HD LCD/plasma becoming ubiquitous. You need to think about your delivery HD necessary? and audio (XLR, pro mics etc). As an example I shoot wedding P/T, and continue to make good use of my PD-170P, addition of century-optics 16:9 lens has brough it up to date, as SD DVD is the delivery platform.

  • Everything is great about this camera except for CMOS. It should be 3ccd so you won't get that fuzzy effect with moving objects.

  • 3ccd is a lot more then the 700 for this cam.

  • working on it. I am not being critical

I just don't see the point showing the soft skin pre-set etc. on nature scene in wide angle. Sure it it is nice/good sample I appreciate his video also.Crobs 88 sumed it up well. By the way I just got mine onle a week ago, so be patient please. No disrespect

    intended

  • It it is unbelievable how you guys disect this little camera. Obviously presets are

there for people who are not experienced in post. How about showing a real samples.

close ups, skin tones. Difference in light situations etc. No camera including pro can give you a perfect result without additional tool e.g. lights reflectors etc. And those 35 mm lens adapters. Excellent tool. But do you now when to use short depht of field.?

    Otherwise good stuff.

  • Hi - Great Idea. Please post a link to your Canon HV20 camera video tests with close ups, skin tones, various light set-ups, lights, reflectors, 35mm lens adapters for short depth of field. You know -- real samples. For now, I appreciate the guy who made this video and his first video on the HV20. JOHN LONGENECKER - California USA

  • It was a quick & dirty test more for my own interest. I dont use 'image effect' apart from custom for contrast -1, so no comprehensive test . As say post or cinemode to preserve shadow/highlight range.

  • Thank you.You really do not owe an explanation why you did it. I actually enjoyed it very much and as a matter of fact id did effect my decision to purchase one.

And I am very pleased with it. regardless of the imperfection in design/features. Thank You monyx

  • i have to get an hv20 now...

  • Cinemode looks best in this video to me!

EXCELLENT examples, one of the most useful videos on all of youtube. THANK YOU.

  • Too bad that Cinemode is useless in real life, because you cannot combine it with Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority modes. I don't know why Canon made such a stupid thing. But if you need fixed shutter speed like 1/24 or 1/60, and most often you do, then you cannot use Cinemode.

  • that's the screeching tyre preset at the end ;o)

    nice camera

  • I thought the Cinemode destroyed all other settings displayed in the video. The highlights were much better exposed (compare the skies.) and if you look on the grass it also displayed that long dark shadow that was completely lost with the other settings in the video. The dynamic range is clearly much better in cinemode in this video. The other settings seem to clip whites and crush some shadow detail.

  • If greater dynamic range and/or softening is sought then I recommend Cinemode, but at quite a cost to sharpness. With attention to exposure you can get nice colour in other modes e.g. my Braidwood video

  • FYI - there is no such thing as a "perfect setting". as an event videpgrapher every environment requires different white balance, lighting, shutter speed, aperturre, and focus settings...there is no magic trick to any camera. it ALL depends on the location.

  • this is good for home videos, but it is best practice to shoot in "P" (Program mode) with no in-camera image alterations like brightness/contrast/cinemamode/etc... always shoot with the least software settings possible to give yourself the most flexibility in post.

  • I understand your point - but specific to the HV20 it's best to shoot Contrast -1 & Brightness -1. I suspect brightness adjusts the auto exposure, no different to under-exposing manually by -1 to -3 which is recommended. Contrast might be digital like you say.

  • NO camera should EVER be shot with in-camera processing. this is not "Specific" to the hv20, no matter what the manual, or a forum of hv20 users might say. in-camera processing is a form of "destructive editing", meaning you cannot go back and undo your setting in post...you will only add more garin by darkening or brightening it after the fact to bring the picture back.

  • Uh huh, so all the custom settings on XH A1, Sony V1p are waste of time? I think you're taking the anti-digital effects line a little too far. I.e the XH A1 is revered for its ability for subtle colour balance & if an exposure adj on a HV20 saves blown-out highlights..well that is far & away better than an over-exposed "virgin" footage.

  • You writed "Cinemode w/ gamma & contrast correctrion in FCP", my question is, the sets presented is in the camcorder or in Final Cut?

  • All the settings except the one you refer are done in camera. The one you refer to is the only FCP adjustment, shown as an example of how to improve Cinemode which has low contrast and less intense colour.

  • Thanks.
