I'm glad to hear that you have interest in Japanese. Japanese is a very beautiful language in my opinion. I've studied it for a few years now, and I've also taught people. I recommend taking it up if you have interest in it :)

If you have a DS there is a DS game or rather ds nongame that teaches basic Japanese including phrases that can be looked up and used if you travel there.

Don't use software under any circumstance. If you can, find a beginner's course with instructor or something. Ultimately, the best thing for fluency, vocab. etc. is time spent in the country.

Rosetta Stone sucks (this is coming from someone who studies languages as a hobby). You'd be throwing away your money. Use a course such as Teach Yourself Japanese, and then learn the writing system.

@priestlt2 It's true. Kanji (漢字) are derived from Chinese. The Chinese have earned my respect :) But in this case we are talking about Japanese, so it's fine to say "shouri" (the Japanese pronounciation of 勝利).
