Yes break it up into manageable chunks. I usually time things out to an 8 frame beat. So you can plan your keys on 8s or multiples of 8. So you could represent your 5 seconds with 15 key drawings shot for 8 frames each.
Do a pose test shooting your key drawings based on what you figure the timing will be for each key. That way you won't waste time doing unnecessary animation.
The tick marks on the charts represent the drawings. The ones on the ends are the key drawings, the tick marks in between represent where the "in-between" drawings are placed in relation to the key drawings.
I've done walk animations before and this video is so useful to help me start thinking about what it might look like if the character goes from a run to a walk, or if a character is skipping but slows down to look at a bug on the ground.

so say if i were to do a 5 sec animation...would that mean 120 frames & would that mean breaking them down into small sections?.....
