I never knew those kind of pipes were made in Pakistan. I play the Highland pipes and have tried those kind but found the bellows and bag thing confusing LOL. I don't really like the sound of even the best sets that much anyway but an African blackwood set would sound much better than those. If you'r really keen on learning them,Find a teacher. You can find them online and some even give online lessons.Oh, and get an ABW set but don't give up.Good luck.
I'd say just pack them away. I had gotten a set of Highland bagpipes from Pakistan as my first set. I changed the chanter reed, the drone reeds, the bag leaked so much that you could feel the breeze halfway across the room. Eventually, I just got tired of it and got a good set. If you life on the US east coast, you can look into Nick Whitmer's uilleann pipes. Their a bit cheaper than others, and still sound good.
I think we all get ripped off by Pakistani sales at least once in our life... I've got the exact same set of Uilleann Pipes with the exact same problem (though it sounds a bit better than yours *lol*). Impossible to play the second octave, I had to pierce extra holes in the strap because it was too large and after 6 months the bellows had a hole in them. Luckily I paid less than $100 for it :)
change the reeds, to plastic, the one way valve needs replacing with leather, then,,,,,,,,, practice a lot lol,,, or spend several thousand dollars on McCallums
Did you carry on with the pakistan pipes and if so how did you get on? Did you swap to a cane reed. I am about to order some so would appreciate your feed back. Pete. powerclean@aol.com
At the least, get yourself a David Daye chanter and toss the Paki chanter, it will only hold you back. Also, make sure you don't have any leaks. Cheers, Seth Swedishbagpipes . com
Try putting a good reed in it. It will sound much better than the plastic one it probably came with and it will slow the air flow so the bag stays inflated. Do this and you will be fine. Use cane reeds.
@jeremyfrancis it's not all you need. I tried to... it's a little better, but just a little... it keeps squeaking and producin unpleasant sounds...don't waste ur time, throw it away. save your money to buy a good one... I tried also to change the chanter: IT DOES NOT WORK. throw it away.
now I have a good practice set, I'm satisfied about it
Good luck for finding a real uilleann pipes set :)
@shantysongs Yeh man, I just got some pakistani bagpipes. Out the box they sounded shit but all they needed were new reeds. There an absolute bargain, I've played and owned much much more expensive pipes and the only difference bar the reeds is ornamental. (Well and lets be honest the tone isnt quite as good as african blackwood, but for the sake of a grand or so, so what!)
You should know your scale long before you buy a full set of pipes. I think my little sister could play my GHB set for the first time better than this guy. Pipes take work. You dont just buy a set of Paki-craps and think you are going to be able to figure them out!
@MrOmahaBB Yeah, I did some research before hand, watching videos and such. I didn't expect to just have that perfect sound right off the bat, considering most pipers say it takes years to master. But I've heard much better from other beginners, and I thought I'd at least do better than this.
I'll just have to wait a couple years before I get more money saved up for a set from a city nearby.
Thanks for posting this video. I've had serious concerns about those pakistani pipes. I'll save money for an extra year or so to get a finely-made set.
My advice is keep working at - just try to sustain an A note at first. That will get you into the bag and bellows technique. Then move on to G-A-B combinations. Practice little and often at the start. Half an hour at a time but do it every day.
My advice is to chuck the bloody things in the fire, consider it a "life lesson," and start saving money for a real set of handmade pipes from a reputable full-time Irish, British, or North American pipemaker.
sorry about the irish comment. if you want to play that set put a good reed in. i can reed the chanter for you at the price of the reed if you look after the post. at least then you will not be without a set.
Neither do I, I'm a proud American of Welsh heritage, waiting for delivery of my uilleann pipe set... no one needs to be Irish to enjoy this wonderful instrument!
your problem (as mine when I bought a pakistan uilleann pipe) is the chanter and the reed.... throw away that f****n' plastic reed and bought a good cane reed, then you probably have to change the chanter, and your pipe will sound good!
i have a bagpipe that came from pakistain and i hate them so much, if i were you i don't bye online, i did that and i lost £150 and it took me £399 to get my bagpipes to work and play properly
i would agree with this. don't fault the instrument just yet. after all you have been practicing for 2 hours. you are haveing to work way to hard with that reed. the tip is open wayyy too far causing you to work so much more. My advice is chuck the plastic reed, find a friend or go to a nearby (or not so nearby) session and find someone to help you. if you find another player im sure they will be willing to help.
The trick to playing a set of uilleann pipes is maintaining a steady constant air pressure to the chanter and drones / regulators if full set is used. Replace the read with a traditional reed. synthetic reeds sound rather shocking and don't hold the range that you need when learning to play. There are several professional pipe makers around the world who produce great sets. my own set is from Ray sloan. a Full set in Concert D. I've been playing since I was 17. now 24. have faith and patience.
if you wanna get a good set of beginner pipes, try benson and cornelius. I got mine for about $1600 and it took them 4 months to make it. seth gallager makes some very fine pipes, but you would have to wait 2 years to get them.
If you are referring to the "Hepburn Practice Set" - I have heard they are the best bang for the buck. For about 250 bucks you can have a decent set of practice pipes to learn on.
I got got the price confirmed by seth gallagher for a beginner set, it's $2700+shipping. and it will take 2 years to get it. my suggestion - go with bensonandcornelius, cheaper price and you will get it in 4 months. even though seth gallagher's name has more fame in this area than bensonandcornelius, I personally think that benson's pipes are just as good.
lol:D You had a though public overthere:P i am sure you will master this instrument in no time;) This is an excellent eartraining instrument:D And this instrument fits very well for the Titanic and Braveheart scores! And thanks for the explanation at the middle of the video. It was really interesting:-) See ya!
Dude! I agree with ubizmo! that rocks and keep it up, just look at other videos with em and work with it, you just need to find the groove for those things, maybe a few slow sips of a good Scotch would help get you in the Scottish frame of mind... (GRIN)
hope to see more, why not video your progress on these like i do the ocarina???

Never buy that crap! but even though you should get something better sound then what your right now!
I can see daylight between you and the bag, your is doing a see saw urgh
Put more pressure on your left arm and keep it on!!
Thats why the tone is going up and down.
Try a better reed in them and DON'T get the reed from Pakistan!!!
It will only sound the fecking same!!!
Find a pipe band there's more then likely someone in the band that play them or know someone that plays!

d00d! pakipipes are crappy, but ur holding it wrong! it would sound awful even if u played on the best set of pipes!
u need to put the bag in a steady grip between the upper part of the arm and ur body, sometimes it looks like u dont even put presure on the bag.

and where praytell does one get a cane reed for a pakistani made uilleann pipes chanter?

No, he won't.
Get a handmade set DIRECTLY from a "name" maker in the US, UK, or Ireland. It's the only way.

They look like Pakistani-made pipes, and if they are, you have been ripped off.
Pakistani-made pipes are terrible quality - not even worth the materials they are made from. There are loads of people selling them on Ebay.
