@alliencedful He didn't have to use the word, he could have worded it in such a way that it was clear he was talking about non analog in-between states. Many devices existed hundreds of years prior that are considered digital by today's standards that he could have used as an analogy.
Search wikipedia for "digital" and scroll down to "historical digital systems", there are many.
