In CALL ME ANNA she states that the final reason was his becoming a Budhist and wanting her to become one too even though she was not interested. This was all after they had been separated for a while and her bipolar pretty much destroyed the marriage.
Her mania (a part of bipolar disorder) was under control by the time they divorced. No doubt it contributed to their separation. The divorce was for the reason you say: Astin's switch to Buddhism and pressuring of her to do the same. This clip is from 1981, at which time Duke hadn't yet been diagnosed correctly.
Back then they would use only one camera for interviews and had to get reaction shots of the interviewer after the interview as over. Today they usually use two cameras.
Yes he's their son. Sean Astin isn't biologically John Astin's son though. Sean took a paternity test in the 90's and he found out he was the son of Michael Tell who Patty had a 13 day marriage that was annulled.

I'm pretty sure it was May 1985 that this aired. I believe they divorced later in the year.
