@BretMeister The USAF AGM-86B cruises at 480kts. The MD-80 cruises at 440kts. This video was shot presumably from one of SW's 737s, which cruises at 420kts. With either one going in the opposite direction you're looking at a combined speed of about 1000mph. With DRVSM being 1000 feet, it's pretty easy to get that close to another plane safely. You should know. For example search for a video called Airliner Crossings by Fly4fun. It's way better quality and still on some of them it looks like this

His videos are very good quality and usually with some zoom, and on SOME of the shots you can't see the wings or separate contrails.

1000+MPH? Yea. OK if it is a ICBM on re-entry maybe, but a cruse missile is a ram jet, not a rocket. It tops off at around 600 MPH. The thing is they are designed to hug the contours of the earth avoiding radar detection and it is unlikely that you would find a cruse missile at that altitude.

- Object was clearly far away from the plane, and it was quite large compared to cruise missile.

- Cruise missiles fly low to avoid radars, and if they fly high, they go subsonic. You can clearly see that object in the video, was travelling almost same speed as passenger plane. Well, their cruise speed can be same, but its wayyyyy smaller than object in video.

Excellent Video. Having worked in the air for over 7 years now on aircraft I think that it was the MD-80. The only reason I think this, is because MOA (Military Operating Areas) do not usually extend to 40,000 Feet. The 737 cruise is usually around 37-38,000 Feet with an operational max of 41,000 ft. I also think it was moving too slow to be a missile.

NO civilian AirCraft that i know of has a visible jetblast of that size. It is hard in anycase to say that that was a plane and prove it. Seriously.

Actually, most missiles don't have much visible flame. If that is a missile, it is a cruise missile powered by jet engines. The point is that you don't want to give a missile's position away, as that makes it easy to avoid or even shoot down. That was probably an MD-80, given the amount of dark exhaust, indicating a large, inefficient set of engines. Cruise missiles have small, efficient motors that give off very little exhaust.

If you look closely at the rear of the aircraft you can make out the intake of the starboard nacelle. Clearly an aircraft in the MD-80 class. I can tell that even from this crappy youtube video.
