MK3 was originally supposed to feature all the fighters that were eventually added in Ultimate MK3 (Scorpion, Reptile, Kitana, ect), but Midway was pushing the MK Team super hard to get the game out, so they only released it with the 15 characters that we ended up getting in the original MK3 release. The other characters and backrounds were still being beta tested, programmed, ect. So several months later, Ultimate MK3 was finally released, the way Ed Boon & Co. originally wanted MK3 to be.

Actually, it DOES make sense. See, one of Shang Tsung's fatalities is to go inside the opponent, then that person explodes open, and he is there. So, yes, the commercial was weird as hell, but it did have a reason.

But, come on, couldn't they have done a more well known fatality. Like, just show him frozen, then while they are trying to thaw him, SubZero breaks in and destroys it. Then here the voice say FATALITY. Thats just off the top of my head and it would have made sense.
