They're live performances in my opinion were really hit and miss.
They never really intended to play exactly what they had on their albums, more just like playing off of a basically skeleton of said songs.
It depended on the time I guess. For example I really like their finally in Colchester from '72, and their one really long version of Spoon, but then I don't really care for their live rendition of Mushroom recently released.
Inspired by this video I listened to an old live recording of CAN I made (with their permission) in 1972 or 3 where you can hear Holgar experimenting (yes they did that live a lot) and he just comes up with the bass line for Vitamin C and keeps on repeating it. Damo was there but too high (I think) to do anything - so he was just sitting on the side of the stage for most of the concert.
