I had to download your CDs, record stores in Australia are bogus. If the Coup or Street Sweeper ever come down under i be there. i'll even buy a t-shirt
Yo Boots you make so much fuckin sense and corporate amerikkka is so afraid of you (or at least you spawing others to realization)! Keep educatin the naive masses cuz its LOOONG overdue!
@arthurude1 i agree that anarcho-communism is the way to go, but you're taking the dictatorship of the proletariat out of context. it's not a literal dictatorship, per se, but a system in which the working class (the vast majority of the citizenry) is in active control of the economic and political paradigm. marx didn't prescribe any precise communist society, and the soviets (with the help of american capitalists) perverted his ideas.
@iwishiweregay yeah but the main model of a communist society addopted worldwide including by the main communism movements in the 30's and even later was Stalinism and Maoism which is based on the model of political repression (to protect the revolution) and a powerful state. changing out bosses from burgeois to a government doesnt sound any better. that's why i rather live without any repression in a model similar to Kropotkin's in The Conquest of Bread.
@CrowdPleeza Fidel Castro sayd 'his' communist sistem doesnt work. keep in mind that Soviet and Cuban comunism arent true communist. they were fascist dictatorships with red and golden parafernalia.
the sistem which Fidel now supports is the Venezuelan sistem: kill democracy and freedom of speech thru legal ways. (a sistem which i fear will be implemented in Brazil soon too)
I'am not sure how much of the Venezuelan system the Castros support. Raul Castro recently laid off about 500,000 public sector workers to go work in the private sector. So he's encouraging more business privatization to employ these workers. I hope the Castros take a look at former communist countries like Estonia and Poland to use as models for this transition from state to privatization with their economy. Both countries have made smoother transitions with this.
@CrowdPleeza im not sure what to think about Fidel Castro. he sayd that communism doesnt work then he says days later that what he meant was that a militaristic revolutionary coup doesnt work.
on the other hand Raul is slowly opening the cuban sistem while the castro brothers clearly support Hugo Chavés and his scheme to seize power.
meanwhile in Brazil the Workers Party (a socialist party gone corrupt with all respectable members leaving to a new party) is slowly killing freedom of speech
most of boots fans dont even know he's a communist. a freedom hating anti constitutional anti amreican scumbag! this motherfucker doesn't believe in individualism. everything should belong to everyone. the next lazy ass like him aint gettin one cent of my hard earned cash. whats mine is mine! capitalism means you dont work, you dont eat. communism is the weak sucking from the strong.
@scheemadruci You make no sense. Capitalism is the weak 1 percent on top sucking from the strong 99 percent. Little rich white boys born w/ money , not doing work, owning half the world, and getting you to pay bank mortgages while thinkin you actually own somethin. That's the ruling class. Read a book once in a while, dildo. If Boots was lazy, he wouldn't have as much work out there in the world like he does. Your statement is ignorant. capitalism doesn't make us individuals, it makes us drones.
@FunkFight1 is communism the right path in your opinion? i agree with you in a way. this is a multi dimentional subject. your argument is just one side among many. i detect a little bit of racialism in your response. you probally have a problem with whiteys like youve been programmed to. your right about the upper ruling class opressing the rest of us. what your wrong about is it isnt a race thing. its a class thing. capitalism has been corrupted by these ben bernake types.
@scheemadruci Having a real class analysis means understanding how race and racism is used by the Ruling Class against the Working Class. This means understanding that racism is part of how oppression works in order to keep folks separated. So to say "It isn't a race thing" sweeps real analysis to the side. All that being said, The Ruling Class is mostly old money, and is white. It does matter in order to understand the development of Capitalism to this point.
@FunkFight1 for the most part i think we are in agreement. but do you honestly believe when the ruling class decides to drop the hammer on america, do you think white people will be spared? your absolutely right to say they use race to divide us. thats why this malik shabazz fuck is getting so much attention! he's a govnt. plant. either from the feds or the southern poverty law center. he's on one of thier payrolls. wer'e all in this shit toghether whether we like it or not!!!!
@adriancarlosvf did you know that communism was created and funded by the rich elites and global bankers as a way for the masses to accept surftatude and tyranny? i wont argue with your observation of capitalism. but communism isn't an alternative!
@scheemadruci I think that there were many people in communism that were funded by rich elites and global bankers, but they were nazis and fascists, they ceased to be communists when they accepted bourgeoisie bribes. Stalin as general secretary helped to lead the Moscow Trials which relatively successfully rooted out all fascits and all of those people that accepted bribes, which is part of why those same rich bankers hate Stalin so much as to paint him as a demon in the media
I like what Boots said.I pretty much only buy independent hip hop now and I download because then I can sample every bit of music I like and then buy the stuff I really want.
I hate downloading music. even itunes, i believe that you should get the cd so your not exposed to just that one song and you wont ever here there other songs that might be better than that one. Ive been colecting cd's my whole life and I dont want them to stop anytime soon
Fucking Boots Riley is the MAN... Digging the new Streetsweeper joints with Tom Morello as well... They need to get ol' Dela Rocha in on a song... That shit would be unstoppable!!
Listen 18-year-old, The Coup is signed to Epitaph, a label that prides itself over how anti-corporate they are. Yet they still send their merchandise over to big stores like Virgin and FYE and even Tower when they were around. And Boots Riley has absolutely no problem over this. If he did, I would not see his albums for sale for a ridiculous price. Now shut the hell up and do us all a favor by leaving Youtube already.
Hey, idiot. Epitaph can talk as much as they want about being anti-corporate, but they are corporate. The proof of this is that they have CDs in huge chain music stores. They do this to make money. You wanna know why it's usually labels (with the exception of Metallica - but they suck ass anyway) that complain about music downloading? Labels get the majority of the profit from record sales, where artists get most of their money from merch and concerts. If you mention my age make sure not to fail
You're proving my point! If the Coup really had a problem with the labels being very corporate, they'd go DIY and sell the CDs themselves. But you don't see them doing that. And you're right, Metallica does suck, now.
I'm guessing that your original question was sarcastic rofl. Anyway, yeah I think the only reason they are on a major label is because they can. I don't care if they're on a major label though, especially since Boots stands with people downloading their music.
And there it is right there... If he ever took someone to court for using his "ideas in space" because of what he said here you can call him a hypocrite.. but not until that day.
Maybe the Coup know that corporations, corrupt as they are, may be the best vehicle to get their music out and their ideas heard. Change coming from the system itself... after all if you have ever read Marx he stated that CAPITALISM would create the conditions for a BETTER system.
I could sell homemade recordings to a chain store and not be corporate (not saying that is epitaph) but the point is.... one can deal (buy or sale) with a corporation without becoming one.
If you live in an economic system and oppose it, that does not mean that you live outside of it.
This idea that you can't seek reform of a system that you are encompassed by is ridiculous.
I don't think you even understand his world view. Being against corporations in their current mode is not the same as being against groups of people organized to create wealth... most people agree that the hard work of one should not be exploited by another as is done ALL OF THE TIME in our current system.
He does not control the price. If he makes a deal with Epitaph so he can get to use state of the art recording equipment or funding to tour for them to have the right to make CD's to sale to Virgin Records or whoever... they get to set the price and the store that buys it from them marks it up again. Go look into his latest music with Tom M. and you will see they have offered Free DL's I will also buy any CD to reward these artists and anyone else that helps them get their music out, BY CHOICE.
Because FYE is ridiculously overpriced. Anyone who buys CD from there for 18. 19. even 20 dollars when you can get them anywhere else for between 9-13 dollars is an idiot. Plus record labels and stores mark up ALL cds.
Man, Boots shares many similar ideas as me. We can't draw lines on this ground and keep people from getting past it. The world doesn't belong to individuals, it belongs to everyone equally! Nature doesn't differentiate between an american or a mexican. Why should we?
And about music, thats exactly my ideas too. I'm gonna put up all of my music for free download so that everyone listen to my ideas. Then if i manage to create a fanbase that respects me, they'll buy my stuff and go to my gigs.
Give it up man, capitalism beat communism in the cold war. America is the most innovative country and free country in the world. Thats why mexican jump over the boarder illegaly, and thats why celebrities live in america despite claining to hate everything about it. Get educated, learn about freedom, and take your marxist ideas somewhere else.
"America is the most innovative country and free country in the world" you might wanna give that statement a second thought.
Socialism was never achieved in the cold war. Capitalism didn't beat anything. All capitalism did to the world was screw over Africa and now screwing over most of the world economy.
Africa is a victim of corrupt government, and centuries of European imperialism, not capitalism. Captialism makes America the most free and prosperous nation, which has suffered times of bad economy only at the hands of government intervetion during the great depression, the 1970's and now with our dim-witted preisent trying to nationalize the economy.
America "free". All what capitalism allows you to did is be oppressed and exploited, with the 2nd option of starvation. How the fuck does capitalism make ppl free? kinda an oxymoron. read some marx, actually educate yourself then talk. Capitalism hasn't beat shit, its more like global dominance over resources succeeds. If there were uncheck ed capitalism there would be mass monopolies i.e. rockefeller and morgan all over again but much stronger.
All of your points are unfounded, uninformed, and untrue. How does captialism opress people? Name your talking point and I will tear it to shreds. How is capitalism an oxymoron? Capitalism is the freedom to conduct your business without government intervention, which makes your statement the dumbest thing ive heard. Oh and if you want to talk about John Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and Hebert Dow, they did more to help the poor than any government program has every done.
that's because it's actually profitable to "help" the poor, it was done purely out of self interest. The fact that the worker may have superficially gained is irrelevant to them, they only do what is most profitable.
Oh, and in the meantime, stop replying. You are obviously are another uneducated marxist clone whos never held a job in your life. Maybe if you start earning your own money one day, youll understand the value of hard work, and youll understand the injustes of the government robbing the hard working to distribute to the unmotivated.
the fact that capitalist pay workers less than what they produce is what i call exploitation, the fact that what takes place in the work place is done arbitraily, it is private property that robs the ppl, it is the gov't that gives a little back. same idea goes with the extremely rich who get rich off of the sweat of the workers then gives them piss back. Its bullshit that some are born into wealth and others arnt and ur saying the gov't is shit. they give free education to give ppl oportunities
Imperialism is why America is so wealthy, why Europe is so wealthy... is that not Capitalism on a state level... exploitation of the weak! If Imperialism is not capitalism than you can't ignore that element of European and American success.
One nation winning out over another does not prove it's system is better, If that were true, Nazi Germany was better than the French system of the time, Saddam's Iraq better than Kuwait's. How is America the "most free" country? How many have you visited? If it was and that was due to Capitalism, why would every other Capitalist nation be as equal and as free? Mexico is Capitalist, is it not? Could it be our Imperialism made us richer?
Take your Marxist ideas somewhere else? Free flow of ideas?
That's so right. Boots Riley is completely right. Free downloads for all. I rather see the artists live than buying the CDs. If there are free downloads then more people find this music and actually listen to it. Become fans if they like it and go to the shows.
Once ideas are given under a claimed notion a separate entity is created to profit from the same idea. People are in the business of profiting from ideas and others are in the business of profiting from protecting those ideas. Just the cold hard facts.
Ideas don't float around in the air waiting to be claimed. Minds must create them and those minds own those ideas just as much as they own their private thoughts. Human thought is not meant to be communal.
If you don't want to share your ideas with the world, DON'T speak them, sing them, or type them here!!! Once you do any of the above or many other things with your ideas.. they are no longer private.. and that is done by each individual by choice.
Guess what... Your ideas and mine on here are exactly that... COMMUNAL!!!! :)
oh! So removing the record company, which would've taken their share of the profit for distributing the music/publicity, is what benefits the musician in a fuller way! Great...But then there's the issue of burning CDs so frequently. That takes away from the musician quite a bit...?
Downloading is the best way to save our culture from the damage that MTV did to it. I wouldn't have ever gotten into The Coup if I didn't download their stuff. Now I buy t-shirts, posters, dvds from artists websites. I love my Coup dvd.
Amen! I also found out about them for free and have since bought 3 of their cds and a 12". record companies are better suited to no-talent piles of shit, rather than actual artists
Word up Boots! I downloaded a live DVD of you guys opening up for Les Claypool in 2006, shot by Jimbo and friends, and it is sick! You'll be happy to know though that I did buy your new CD to support you guys. I hope everyone's doing alright after that awful bus crash. Keep doing your thing and come play the Great White North (Canada!) soon! Oh yeah, I love the sample you used from the Parliament Funkadelic live in Oakland bootleg!
That shit is going out the window. ISP's monitor and reports violations of the DCMA. Combine that shit with the PATRIOT act and a lot of people are fucked who use "illegal downloads" are going to be fucked.

a dictatorship with control of press and freedom of speech, a dictatorship with a secret police and a censorship organization.

Become fans if they like it and go to the shows.

i love the way this guy thinks

Ideas are not created by the artist in isolation however. They are the result of his or her interactions with the rest of the world.
adnauseam81 3 years ago 2
Once ideas are given under a claimed notion a separate entity is created to profit from the same idea. People are in the business of profiting from ideas and others are in the business of profiting from protecting those ideas. Just the cold hard facts.

Ideas don't float around in the air waiting to be claimed. Minds must create them and those minds own those ideas just as much as they own their private thoughts. Human thought is not meant to be communal.
HrothgarOfHeorot 3 years ago
If you don't want to share your ideas with the world, DON'T speak them, sing them, or type them here!!! Once you do any of the above or many other things with your ideas.. they are no longer private.. and that is done by each individual by choice.
Guess what... Your ideas and mine on here are exactly that... COMMUNAL!!!! :)

Don't be a damn fool. Obviously my idea above is not at all yours since you don't even agree with it.

never said I did

oh! So removing the record company, which would've taken their share of the profit for distributing the music/publicity, is what benefits the musician in a fuller way! Great...But then there's the issue of burning CDs so frequently. That takes away from the musician quite a bit...?

It takes what from them?
If they say download my stuff they are GIVING it to you.
Unclecookoo 2 years ago
Downloading is the best way to save our culture from the damage that MTV did to it. I wouldn't have ever gotten into The Coup if I didn't download their stuff. Now I buy t-shirts, posters, dvds from artists websites. I love my Coup dvd.

HEy man, where do you get the shr=irts and all that from? I really would like a boots shirt or something.

Amen! I also found out about them for free and have since bought 3 of their cds and a 12". record companies are better suited to no-talent piles of shit, rather than actual artists

Same here.. I will go to any concert near me and pay to see him now.. I would not have before.
I hate that in those cases I am giving WAY TOO MUCH to middle men but that is the nature of the system we must break down.
Not opposed to everything about capitalism but it is a deeply flawed system.

Hell yeah! I've always said the same thing.

He's a Marxist actually. His points are good in theory.
Probably naive in some cases to put them into practice- but i have full respect for his principles and for speaking his mind.
tangytom7 3 years ago
Why naive?
Putting any theory into practice even the current theory of "capitalism" we live in has its flaws.
By your logic ALL systems are "naive in some cases to put them into practice" are they not?

Word up Boots! I downloaded a live DVD of you guys opening up for Les Claypool in 2006, shot by Jimbo and friends, and it is sick! You'll be happy to know though that I did buy your new CD to support you guys. I hope everyone's doing alright after that awful bus crash. Keep doing your thing and come play the Great White North (Canada!) soon! Oh yeah, I love the sample you used from the Parliament Funkadelic live in Oakland bootleg!
