I think this cover is really interesting. As someone said, you hear the LZ influence, and yet, you still hear Godsmack. It's a very interesting mix. At the beginning, and the guitar solo in there, for a moment you're teleported back a few decades. But you still hear Sully.
did you ever stop to think that maybe they covered this song because they love it and wanted people to hear a led zep song done so that people that don't know who led zep is (and there are people out there ) hell i only heard one led zep song before they did this song....now i listen to led zep all the time. Yes i am a godsmack fan and i like thier music because its not too harsh and the lyrics are relatable....plus they are one of the few new true to rock bands out these days
if you go into the Led Z. 1 track 1's middle, Plant nearly sounds like this guy(as in a normal man-instead of the schrill).-not that I don't like R.P.s vocal.
in this version, "good times, bad times" was not well played... this was not at all an original take on the song either... basically this was a shitty tribute, period... godsmack is just raping the led zeppelin corpse and trying to squeeze out some sort of popularity or "musician" status by borrowing the stroke of genius that was this song (before they butchered it)

@thomas221100 Godsmack what?.... squeeze out popularity or musician status by covering a Zep song? Godsmack had gained their musician status long before covering this song.... but thats your opinion... as for this being a shitty version, once again thats your opinion cause if you hit the official video you will find lots of Zep fans saying that its the best cover they have heard till present... anyway peace
Just a thought...comparing Godsmack to Led Zeppelin is like comparing Satriani to SRV...apples to oranges...The differences in their sound is a result of their differences in their approach to music, their differences as musicians. This wasn't meant to be an exact replica of Zep's song. It was meant to be Godsmack's performance of the song. As Godsmack being Godsmack, as a tribute to a phenomenal music forerunner, it's an excellent tune.
@NSTARProductions, Thith Thucks donkey balls!! this is the wife beater, cigarette smoking, hard drinking, shaved head, brutish voice version of good times, bad times. Sucks.
awesome cover by godsmack.... true to their own sounds yet a great tribute to one of the bands that infuenced them heavily.... shannon was influenced by legendary drummers like bonham and peart... throughout his career he created his own style... i say hes an awesome drummer.....
i really like how all the poeple who like these bands sit there and tell you that 70's bands sucked and didn't influence this...yet all of these bands cover 70's stuff and love these bands!
@Nellynoodlebums Your a fucking idiot you poser faggot! Who ar eyou too say he plays better than JOHN BONHAM!! its JOHN you fucking idiot...you act like your a pro, and you know sooo much that you can judge whos better yet you don't even know his fucking name you lame ass bitch
@treyofour chill out you asshole....he can have an opinion, and he said jason, john had a son, JASON, who played for the shows with zep after john bonham died.........
@GrantDallas1992 thats because bonham and extremely good hearing just like his son, bonham played a half beat after the guitar not before, thats why they have incredible sound. no one could imitate led zeppelin to a tee and very few come even close.
@icedbullet666 ive studied bonhams drumming for years and i have to disagree.. he doesn't play a beat after the guitar.. there is an anacrusis with the vocal line but thats all i can personally hear.
@icedbullet666 The way I see it is this, covers aren't supposed to be spot on to the tee because that just means you are imitating what has already been done. When most bands cover a song, they throw their own little spins on the song to try and set it apart from the original. That is just my 2 cents, take it or leave it.
@icedbullet666 And also, I would like to apologize if my comment came off a little bit prickish. I was having one of those days. So yeah man I didn't mean to offend ya if I did.
Beautiful cover, mostly by a Heavy Metal band, who know how to do a good cover of such a Hard Rock masterpiece by such an amazing band that is Led Zeppelin. Good sound too. The singer managed to adapt his voice to Robert Plant’s style, dosing its power. I must add that the guitarrist would have done it better if he'd studied and played Jimmy Page's solo by heart; in fact, to do a very good cover, you have to follow the original version and play it as similar to the original as you can
You know, I went in this totally expecting to hate it considering I don't care for the band AT ALL. But they did a pretty good job of covering this song. I really wanted to hate it but I just can't.
@geemoney3333333 dude i just found out this was a zeppelin song ive been listening to it for the past five years thinking it was a godsmack song until i watched this vid
i'll say this much. i don't like Godsmack. i'm not really fond of this cover. but i will say this much, Sully Erna's vocals are good. its a combo of Robert Plant and James Hetfield. he knows hes doing a Zeppelin cover, but at the same time he stays true to his metal roots.
@rocker13511 .... i dont agree with the i dont like godsmack cuz i love godsmack but i do agree with his vocals being a combo of robert plant and james hetfield.
@guitargod445 well, i'm not gonna insult your tastes. its your opinion and thats fine. i just don't like 'em. thats my opinion. i'm loving Slayer and having a good time doing that
@rocker13511 He has a great voice and it goes hand in hand with robert plant and no shit he dnt compare to Robert Plant because they have their individual voice so it's a matter of opinion not talent, Godsmack has a strong spiritual feel even if it's just you alone listening therefor I have the same respect for Godsmack as I do for Led Zeppelin. Anyone who judges one person's voice over all of the whole band are mentally lazy. Was anyone listening to the instruments? Obviously LZ liked the cover
blah, boring. okay cover i guess. singer has that modern rock timbre to his voice which irks the fuck outta me, though; what is that, "grunge"? thank you mr pearl jam dude for inspiring countless pale imitators to torment us. funny thing is, robert plant used to bug me ( a bit too caterwaul-y, white boy blues) but now i realize how FAR superior he is to 99.9% of what were hearin' today, so i'm diggin' him again.
so they did a respectable modernized copy of the original, cause they were probably inspired by the song growing up.
But its absolutely riDICKulous to actually try to say this is "better" than the original. This band would have nothing to play if Led Zepp didn't blow the roof off the house in *1969* when they envisioned their sound- actually its amazing how SIMILAR the 2 songs sound, given they're about 30 years, 30 YEARS, apart. LZ was just way ahead of their time.
@BuckNasty0210 great observation there killer, but when is the cover as good as the origional? with the exceptions of maybe Orgy's "Blue Monday" or maybe Johnny Cash playing Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt" is there any "covers" even 3/4 as good as the origional..so let me ask you this, witch would you prefer as a cover style: A-a band plays a cover and trys to sound just like the original or B-have a band play a "cover" and have their own spin on it, to the point where it dont evensound the same?
i love this cover its awsome the drummer for godsmack is one of the best and at 2:32 he was siging at the hard rock cafe in foxwoods and the band he was playing with was hard knoxx and i know the drummer really well and it was cool to see him in this vidieo

Well even though this is a butchered cover I do believe it is the only Godsmack song that does not use the phrases "Go Away," "Keep Away" or "Stay Away."
Okay, I have a question. Is it just me or does this lead singer not have the range to sing this song? Is this song being played in a lower key? Because Robert Plant's range is like Steven Tyler's...... insane.
I'm blocking you three (djake89, ledzep1313, and lordkelly.) I don't deal with the ignorant. Yes Zeppelin does suck, Jimmy Page was sued by Willie Dixon for stealing the riff he (Jimmy) used for Whole Lotta Love.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the only member of Zeppelin that had any incredible amount of talent was John Bonham (may he rest in peace). He is on the same level as drummers like Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Bob Burns, Gary Driscoll (RIP), Tommy Aldridge, Randy Castillo (RIP), Cozy Powell (RIP), Mike Bordin, Shannon Larkin, Tommy Stewart, Lars Ulrich, Joey Jordison, Vinny Appice, Carmine Appice, Lee Kerslake, Bobby Rondinelli, Simon Wright, Bev Bevan, well you get the picture
You are an idiot Alek!!! So small! Jimmy didn't steal the riff. Plant borrowed the words. Jackass!!! And Bonham blows away any drummer in your primative list! Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page are the greatest of all time!!! Get that into your head and you'll feel alot better!
if you dont deal with the ignorant you shouldnt even be talking to them. You're a little bit ignorant yourself. ill bet if you asked Godsmack if they were better than Zeppelin theyd say fuck no. (thats why they chose to cover this song, dumbass, because they like Zeppelin)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Godsmack kicks fucking ass, much better then Zeppelin, and that is really saying something because I love 70's rock/metal the most like Skynyrd, Sabbath and Purple. Zeppelin sucks because Page stole almost every riff he claimed to write. Every band that I heard cover Zeppelin turns out better then Zeppelin always. Ronnie James Dio's first band Elf, covered Black Dog, it turned out better, and so did this
I find it ridiculous that you say Zeppelin ripped off so much shit. Keep Away is basically Hey Man Nice Shot in the verse, and Time Bomb is basically Last by NIN in the verse, which I have no problem, just that your beloved Godsmack does the same thing. Everybody cops riffs and progressions, it's how your able to make them into something quality which I feel Zeppelin certainly did. And you don't deal with the ignorant ? Take a look at yourself buddy when you act like your opinion is the truth.
you are right, that was the ignorant me . I am embarrassed about my comment, I am truly sorry, and you are right about all bands doing it. I will still admit, I am not a big fan of Zep, but I cannot deny their talent nor impact they had on rock music in general, and in my honest opinion, if Zep wasn't good, other bands such as Godsmack wouldn't cover them. Like I said, I apologize for my past ignorance.
Wow, not the sort of response I would expect to get lol. Right on man, I've made comments I felt stupid about afterwards too haha. I agree though, there are certain bands that have had a large impact on music, but I don't really enjoy them. I certainly respect them but I'm just not into their music, i.e. queen, the beatles etc. But it seems you get crucified if you tell someone that you just plain old don't enjoy their music, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Just so you know, my "ahh.." comment was in response to his "ahh... tough guy.." comment. That kind of changes things. YouTube sucks at ordering comments correctly. I win, twofold. You lose by simply enjoying this shitty cover.
Have y'all heard Cracker's version of this Zeppelin tune on the "Encomium" tribute CD? . . . . . Is very good

I just don't think the singer's range can be compared to Plant's
Bigd102030 2 years ago
and plus godsmack's vocalist sounds like he has down syndrome that makes a difference
nyismylove 2 years ago
Okay, I have a question. Is it just me or does this lead singer not have the range to sing this song? Is this song being played in a lower key? Because Robert Plant's range is like Steven Tyler's...... insane.
axltyler 2 years ago
I'd guess this song was played tuned a whole step down. I agree. Erna's range is nowhere close to that of Plant in his prime.
JamesOhGoodie 2 years ago 3
if you try to sing out of your range it sounds horrible

I'm blocking you three (djake89, ledzep1313, and lordkelly.) I don't deal with the ignorant. Yes Zeppelin does suck, Jimmy Page was sued by Willie Dixon for stealing the riff he (Jimmy) used for Whole Lotta Love.

the only member of Zeppelin that had any incredible amount of talent was John Bonham (may he rest in peace). He is on the same level as drummers like Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Bob Burns, Gary Driscoll (RIP), Tommy Aldridge, Randy Castillo (RIP), Cozy Powell (RIP), Mike Bordin, Shannon Larkin, Tommy Stewart, Lars Ulrich, Joey Jordison, Vinny Appice, Carmine Appice, Lee Kerslake, Bobby Rondinelli, Simon Wright, Bev Bevan, well you get the picture
AleksandrScheffler 3 years ago
You are an idiot Alek!!! So small! Jimmy didn't steal the riff. Plant borrowed the words. Jackass!!! And Bonham blows away any drummer in your primative list! Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page are the greatest of all time!!! Get that into your head and you'll feel alot better!

your so full of yourself you poor egotistical fool.
AleksandrScheffler 3 years ago
if you dont deal with the ignorant you shouldnt even be talking to them. You're a little bit ignorant yourself. ill bet if you asked Godsmack if they were better than Zeppelin theyd say fuck no. (thats why they chose to cover this song, dumbass, because they like Zeppelin)

Take a look at yourself buddy when you act like your opinion is the truth.
schism206 2 years ago 3
you are right, that was the ignorant me .
AleksandrScheffler 2 years ago 4
Wow, not the sort of response I would expect to get lol. Right on man, I've made comments I felt stupid about afterwards too haha. I agree though, there are certain bands that have had a large impact on music, but I don't really enjoy them. I certainly respect them but I'm just not into their music, i.e. queen, the beatles etc. But it seems you get crucified if you tell someone that you just plain old don't enjoy their music, and there's nothing wrong with that.
schism206 2 years ago
Actually a great cover!
I just have to give the nod of respect to Led over Godsmack, though.
DrummingUpGames 3 years ago
Of course Zeppelin gets the nod, they were innovators along with bands such as Sabbath that were the basis for bands like Godsmack. I agree with you

I meant stupid in general terms....but glad you are bringing it down to your level. Must be hard for you trying to act intelligent.

And....the interent tough guy response was geart as well...it made you look so stupid.
DHRC18 3 years ago
Just so you know, my "ahh.." comment was in response to his "ahh... tough guy.." comment. That kind of changes things. YouTube sucks at ordering comments correctly. I win, twofold. You lose by simply enjoying this shitty cover.
funkatram 3 years ago
No, I was laughing because he was calling you an internet tough guy....aka a loser!
DHRC18 3 years ago
Yeah, I know that. I'm telling you he wasn't clever enough to imitate my "ahh" comment. I was the one who imitated his. Idiot.
