Number one: The video didn't look like the guy was poking the cheetah at all... I wasn't sure what he was doing, but that was the first thing I noticed... It didn't make sense that he would do that anyway, because people are watching, and animal cruelty wouldn't make sense... Only rednecks would find "poking a cheetah in the head" amusing...
95% of the comments are about how stupid the guy is and how the cheetah is being abused. Guys, get your facts straight. Wouldn't you be afraid to put medicine on something that can kill you in five seconds when it's not distracted?
wow the first comments that you see are the ones that explain what he's doing and you guys are still getting pissed wtf. You are a dumbass to believe that he's poking it for no reason and you can clearly see he's moving the stick in a circular motion like he's trying to wipe something on the ear. dumbass!!!!!
i wish that cheetah went for a bigger meal( which in this case is the fucker poking and disturbing the cheetah while eating)....like he can fuckin try that with a lion...ARGGGGGGGGG
He`s learning the cheetah not to be overaggressiv if a human/zookeeper(no zookeepers aint humans as you can see in the video) approch it during feedingtime :P
its so cute but, if u dont leave the thing alone it looks like its going 2 bite ur head of, i would be mad as hell if some1 disturbed me when i was eating, espeshally if i waz a cheetha.
I think it is maybe one of those places where the keepers can stroke the cheetahs and stuff and maybe the stick was to get the cheetah used to being touched. He was more like stroking the ears of the cheetah than poking it and it looked like something soft was on the end of the stick. I agree with samfoxy234 about the training. I saw a place for rescue cheetahs once and they were really tame. I guess this could be a method they use? Perhaps?
This is at the Cincinnati Zoo. They do have a cat ambassador program, but those cheetahs are kept at another facility; not the zoo itself. The soft stuff is actually an insect repellent cream, and since these cats aren't tame, feeding time is really the only time it can be safely applied. I'm sure its a little annoying for the cats, but its really for their own good.
lol yeah, im sure it was just some guy that they let play with a stick and poke around during feeding time...im sure he had no purpose there and wasn't trying to accomplish anything.
/end sarcasm
and really? he sucks? does poking take a certain skill in your book?
but indeed poor cheetah, regardless of what the man is trying to accomplish, to her/him he's just some guy poking her/him with a stick while trying to eat.
I think he's doing that to train the cheetah not to attack if he or one of his colleages has to approach it while it eats, kinda like what they do with dogs. That's just my theory.
No, this isn't abuse in the least. He's trying to help the cat, putting some kind of ointment on it's ear. it's probably cut or scratched or something.
Well, being a former intern at the Cincinnati Zoo cat house, and having actually done this myself a number of times, I can affirm that what Bassman said is in fact true. Further, I can attest that the keeper in the video is very kind-hearted, especially toward the cats he works with. True, the cheetahs probably derive no pleasure from the ointment application, especially while they are trying to eat, but it is necessary to keep them happy and healthy
The question of captivity is a difficult one, but I'm always curious to know how someone came to the conclusion you've reached. The cheetah is endangered, and most zoos, and especially the CZBG participate in breeding programs that attempt to stimulate the growth of such species. Cincinnati I know for a fact has at least one animal that is extinct in the wild. What's more, zoos don't keep animals as pets, and the true purpose of a zoo is not to entertain the public, but to educate.
Bassman must be right; it looks like he's applying an ointment or something to the cat's head. I'm sure he's not doing it to torment the cat. Relax, people.
I can imagine the cheetah thinking to him/herself, "What the FUCK are you to trying to do human asshole, how would you like it if I poke a stick at your human fucking head while you are eating, asshole human?"
wow. i can't believe how dumb some people are, to think a zookeeper would actually poke an animal just to poke it. See how the pole has a white tip? That's a fly repellent cream called Swat. Cheetah ears are particularly susceptible to insect infection, so this is a necessary procedure, and it just happens that the best time to apply it is while they eat. All you animal-rights activist wannabes, get your fucking facts straight.
Bassman, you most likely right, it doesn't look like he's deliberately tormenting the cheetah. But if you'd like people to see your point quit the name calling. It doesn't help you.
That poor Cheetah. The Cheetah is like "Cmon man cant you give me a minute to eat". You can see it in the cheetah's eyes, he just wants to eat in peace!
They really should not do it this way, but probably they were just testing his patience for some ambassador sort of program (Cheetah - encounter in zoo?). This is really a subject of serious debate. No doubt the effects of "cheetah encounter" is benefical for their kind (well, and probably for the zoo's budget, that's it :( ), but i guess these tame cheetahs usually really should not be selected THIS way. It is true that this thing is stinky, no matter in what aspects we try to view it.
What are your theories? Experiments aside, the guy with the stick looks like a comlplete dork in general, and kitty knows it. "why is this dork poking me in the head while I'm trying to eat my stew? " Cheetah looks so unhappy that it seems like he's just trying to mess with her.
I knew for a longgie. They are obviously putting the stick by the cheetah seeing if the cheetah will bite it, or react to it. They do it all the time with dogs in clinnikks
bullshit, they dont put cheetahs up for adoption. Why the fuck would they care whether it would bite them for poking it with a stick? Leave the poor cats alone, I say.
they want to see if they are safe. they ddon't want a kid running in there and getting bit. they do it to see how protective they are... I agree with infmanChease. You a re obviously retarded,
I'm retarded for disagreeing with someone. Good job being persuasive, asshole. They're wild animals. If a kid runs in their because their parents are too dumb to keep an eye on him, he's probably going to get attacked regardless. Even if it was to make them more comfortable with their trainers, there are better ways to do it than poking them in the face with a stick.
or maybe they should leave animals in the wild, as per when a wild animal is eating, HUMANS should not be interrupting. Training my ass, no such thing as training a wild animal.. morons...
Ahaha, the cheetah's like," why the hell is this retard poking me in the face?"

Those strokes are gentle so until we know the circumstances I don't think we can criticise. I don't agree with the animal being in captivity though.
