  • so fucking boring

  • do you have two sets of hihats on one stand?

  • Great stuff, man. You're ride has an absolutely beautiful tone...I love it. Speaking of which, I'm very curious about the lick you do at around 1:02. I've seen drummers do it before, but if you could tell me exactly what you were doing there that would be appreciated.! Check out the song Jellybelly by Smashing Pumpkins, it has a very similar fill in the intro that I'm trying to figure out, and I figured this would help. Any response would be much appreciated, great groove! :)

  • Thanks!

My rides is an Istanbul Agop Signature ride.

In that section I'm playing double stroke rolls on the snare while hitting ride in between the roll. Basically just fast doubles.

    Hope that helps.

All the best. Keep playing hard!

    Colin

  • @colinkingsmore So just rrllrrllrrll and the first stroke on the right hand is hitting the ride?

  • Nice! It's great coming across a vid like this after having waded through so much sameness.

May I ask... just curious, because (no one has mentioned this!?!?)... I wonder where YOU are feeling the pulse as you play? Because I hear it both ways at different times, sometimes the BD as the anchor, other times I feel the BD as 4 underneath a strong 3. Were you just blowing here, not even thinking on that level, or did you intentionally set this rhythmic tension up? Either way... nice.

  • @scottp118

    Thanks Scott!

I was feeling the dotted quarter notes on the bass drum. Therefore the bass drum comes back to beat 1 every 3 bars. I was trying to keep 4 bar phrases which means beat one of every 4 bars doesn't get accented for a while... It really frees up creative ideas while improvising.

    All the best!

  • @colinkingsmore, neat... so the 4 over 3 thing. ("4 under 3" may be more accurate here!) But nice job at creating that tension / illusion.... and whether totally intended or not, that it flows out as smoothly as it does shows you have a really natural comfort with it. Great!

(I hope that, to others, this does not all sound pedantic or like academic over-analysis, because my impression is just the opposite: sure, it's 4v3 / dotted quarters, but it comes out very MUSICALLY. Always the point!)

  • @scottp118

Yeah, like most grooves, its best to feel it instead of analyzing it. Just get into the vibe and have fun with it!

    thanks!

  • wood rims for the win.

  • The snare sounds grreattt...Good job kep it up.

  • wan't just good...it was damn good. Awesome!!!

  • good

  • Super clean...smooth

  • That was especially awesome because of the studio rings with that super short decay. Really perfects your technique, being able to hear every single stroke. Great job man.

  • Dude. Fucken great job. Seriously impressed! I'm usually a total asshole when it comes to comments, but you are exempt.

  • I'm with you on this... I'm an asshole when I comment drummers because it's hard for me to say I'm worse than others... I'm worse than this guy. Damn, you're good. Love it.

  • awesome kit

  • This was my video contest entry, also in 6/8 beat. Not too flashy and less chops than you. Did the best I could.

  • EC2 coated.

  • You've got a good sense of groove, good timing, chops and you make dumb faces when you play. You'd fit right into professional drumming.

Seriously though, excellent video dude, good luck. 5/5

  • What ride is that, and is it Mehmet or Agop? I'm probably going to get one myself, or at least a ride of that nature from one of the Istanbul companies. Badass solo, btw. You've got a great sense of groove.

  • one word: SICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

You have a nice feeling...like it

  • Colin This is a great Solo. The idea of keeping one groove is very cool and judges love that. Your solo and another one by james murphy are the only ones that scare me.Check out my submission and tell me what you think.

  • Hey Man, the only thing I can say is that was sick! Technically flawless and full of flavor. Great solos build energy throughout until reaching a climax and that is exactly what you did. Wicked Awsome!!

  • Great job Colin! Clean, creative, original, grooving, good tone. Right on!!

  • wow, i would say that your in, your grooves were consistant and very good, kept a steady tempo and demonstrated the kit and your abilities

my only advice is make a groove work throughout the whole song, like for example your rim groove incorporate that thoughout the whole solo gives it abetter feel

    but great job

  • yes. yes. y-e-s.

  • As always....BRILLIANT....FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!

  • is that one of the mapex snares thats almost 1005 wooden with the wooden hoop?

  • Yea! That is some serious drumming.

  • loves it Colin! kickass.

    rw

  • Good gawd....my brain is exploding! This is amazing!!! You are King Colin!

  • It's pretty ridiculous how much slicker you are than the 5000 other applicants I watched. You're rad.

  • Awesome drumming! Good Luck!

  • wow, THAT'S how you play the drums folks!

  • Beautiful, exciting, and tasty drumming man!

  • Colin ... you've come a long way and the mixture of styles you've worked with have really created some growth. You're a credit to the profession and I'm sure the best is yet to come. Excellent work pal!

  • Wicked man!!! thats all i got

  • That was incredible. This is by far the best entry I have seen thus far. You were not only fast, but accurate. Your timing

was right on point, which is difficult for most drummers

when tackling such a complicated rhythm. Respect.

  • Amazing dude, you're incredible!

  • That was freakin' amazing!
