This song is ruling my life right now. I can't stop listening to this brilliant track. Wow.....I thought it took 20 years for the Editors and Interpol to make "post punk" really rock, and not just be arty, but the Sounds were already kicking it in 1980. Such energy..........I love it............WTF..........why wasn't this huge? Makes their contemporaries seem like amateurs, and all the new breed look like snobby copycats. The Sound are the real deal kiddies!
@NadaInterior call it as you want i don't care. At the time it was call New Wave even it's smarter to call it Post Punk (and Alt Rock is a therme created in the 90's).
There is a whole group of architecture students in my hometown (porto, Portugal) that listened to this and actually organised a concert for them back in the 80s, so there is an entire 40 year old generation here that keeps this alive, I inherited From the Lion's Mouth from one such architect, my uncle.
It must have been on Peely back in 1980/81 that I first heard Heyday and rushed out to buy Jeopardy. You couldn't listen to that breakthrough album without realising that they were something very special .. such a big part of my teenage and later years .. god bless you Adrian and also JP.. to both of you, eternal thanks and rest in peace guys .. .
@heavydutydudes The sound deserves its own credits. Post it on spotify, twitter etc. Deserves to be rediscovererd. I was glad to rediscorver it and still enjoy!
@heavydutydudes we actually have Wire to thank for these great bands. But even more so, the genres of punk & reggae, which merged to create this style.
Also, the sound AND joy division's first albums both came out in 1979 so I doubt they influenced each other very much
U2 purposely went for stardum(you can hear it on early albums too like Boy/October), The Sound didn't. The Sound did music on their own terms. That's the difference between the two.
Bands like The Sound/Chameleons were way too ahead of their time back then, thus no success. Let's turn the tables to today, I think U2/Smiths sound awfuly dated today while The Sound,Chameleons,Savage Republic(another great underrated) sound like gold now. just my 2 cents!
He threw himself under a London subway train(I think). In the last few days of his life he was off of his meds, completely delirious and hearing voices. It's sad he never realized how much he was loved.
Great to see a video of The Sound in (almost!) live action - but have to say this shows them at less than 5% of the energy of the live gigs!
Prachtige tijd.
Amazing video. Thank you so much for posting this up. I wish they were still making music. Such an under appreciated band..........I'll always keep you alive!
Many "live" TV performances are lipsynched. It's easier than doing a live sound mix, and there's less chance of a foulup. And yeah, it takes away from the energy of the performance. However, with the relative scarcity of video footage of The Sound, even a lipsynched performance is worthwhile.
I´m 16, and I lissen always the ´70 ´80, I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers ('80/'90 songs) not the new one. Supertramp, the Sound, Nirvana, Foo Fighters and more:)
white lies are OK but nowhere near as good as the sound, they lack the authenticity and urgency.....their stuff sounds contrived, as does 99% of what I hear coming out nowadays
the Sound are a forgotten gem, amazing how few people have heard of them
Songs such as this still sound as vital and energising to me today as they did when I first heard them all those years ago, and I've heard a LOT of music in my time (I'm 48 if that really matters).
