We, as your fans, hate that you did not get to witness this, but at least your children and grandchildren did. May they always be blessed. Diana looks like she is anorexic. She always told Florence that she was fat but Flo looked and sounded the best. Motown records really screwed Flo over
@Roberus65 I have the original, they cut out part of the song and video she actually catches it without looking or missing a beat to the song as it falls off. It's so subtle you barely notice.
I'm guessing they were clip on earrings, and they look really heavy, so I'm not surprised they fell off. But you're right, she did a really good job of taking care of it.
Florence Ballard was so "deliciously" beautiful, with an angelic voice. Always puzzled me why barry gordy did not showcase flo's talents more, she had both the physical and inner beauty and graced the stage with impeccable grace. RIP FLO you are not dead, you just made yourself....... invisible and your music lives on.
@swso2000 I never said or implied her voice was not the most pleasant...in fact...saying it was the lightest was almost a way of saying it was the most "pleasant" - but of course that is up to personal preference...I said Diana's voice was the lightest because it was...her tone was light in her lower register while piercingly fragile (in a good way) in her upper...
Wow, I love how smooth she was when she just caught her earing without even looking at it. If you don't look you wouldn't notice until you saw her ear without it.
if you like your motown music check out the story of motown show in the olympia theatre dublin 8th of may fantastic show featuring the jewelettes tickets available through ticketmaster!its an amazing show not to be missed!!
I wish ppl wud get off Dianas back!she had something Florence did not and that is a unique voice.Yes Florence cud blow, but there are millions of singers that can.Diana was a PERFORMER of the rarest kind, and thats why she is known as thee SUPREME, the end
@MJBKfan4ever If all you say is true Diana could have started out as a soloist, and we both know that wouldn't have been possible. Diana is a creation of Berry Gordy and Motown. With the same attention, who knows what Flo could have become or Mary for that matter. Your right; diana is a performer, a star. That is her draw. a unique voice is another way of saying can't sing. HDH knew how to make that unique voice sound like something marketable, that's all.
unique is another way of saying original. HDH figured out her tone quality on accident and they turned itinto gold after that. Watch HDH interviews they have much respect for her talent. That voice to motown and black music to another level. We all should respect that
Someone who sings out of their nose is not original. Mary Weiss of the Shangri-las was hardly a good singer, but she sold records because Shadow Morton knew how to produce her, same as HDH with Ross. It would be illogical for HDH to say anything that can be construde as negative about Diana; they made a fortune off her. I love Ross, I just purchased my tickets to see her in Atlanta, She's more about being star than being a singer. And she is a superstar, a diva, but not a good singer.
@carolinaguy321 The truth is there is no point in argueing about a singers voice. What sounds amazing to me may just sound nasal to you. To each his own. My knee jerk reaction is to defend the voice I love so much, but that's the great thing about art everyone hears or sees it from their own perpective. PEACE.
I agree with your sentiment on art. In fact, I recently used the same reasoning to explain visual art to someone who had never been to a museum before. Yes, let's just say we have our own ways of appreciating Miss Ross, and just enjoy what she has to offer each of us.
@carolinaguy321 I think she IS a 'great' singer!!No,she isn't in possession of a voice that can do all that 'yodelling' that many singers overindulge in (like say Mariah, who sings 10 notes where ONE would suffice)!!And many times a singer with a very supple voice box 'yodels' so much that the actual melody line from a song gets completely lost, whereas in Diana's case you can hear every word she's singing AND follow the WRITTEN melody line too, which makes her (to me) an awesome vocalist!!
The Supremes were at the top of their game with this song; it was their biggest hit. Four weeks at number one! And they all looked SOOOO gorgeous here! Loved Mary's smile, Flo's wiggling hips and Diana's fierce wig! OW! --- But yeah, not too long after this, things started to go downhill for Flo. BG's plan to keep Diana at odds with Mary and Flo to control the sum of the Supremes' parts was in full effect by this time.
This is the period when Diana Ross was getting all the spotlight, and they soon became Diana Ross and The Supremes.
The other 2 knew they were becoming redundant when they were just singing 'ooooo baby baby, ooooo baby'. And just got a couple of wiggles and one close-up on camera.
They were all gorgeous. But Ross was being groomed for a solo career.
I didn't know it's their song , i always thought it's a Phil Collins song from the 80's , well that's a little of a shock to me to find out it's actually their song.
I saw this clip about 15 years ago and I was thinking that they looked so strange, what I find is so funny is that you can put that look together today and nobody would look at you funny becasue that is the look once again in 2010 the make up lashes and wigs.
Ms Honey was fierce when she caught that ear ring without batting an eye. Regardless of what she may be or have done, Ross is a Diva and I love her for her star appeal.
you are right. not a big supremes fan but this song & a few others i've enjoyed. this was a nice no. i felt the camera stayed too much on d. ross. we've missed flos' & marys' wiggles, smiles, & etc.****
Love The Supremes!! What Fun to listen to this Today!! Love Diana's voice and Flair for Fasion. Unstopable!! Was. Wonderful meeting her Back n The Day at Studio 54 NYC!! Truely a Lovely Lady!!! Thankyou Supremes and Diana for Decades of Splendid Music!!...
Mary Wilson was the best thing that ever happened to the Supremes. All three were talented and their harmony was unmatched. But for me, I'll take Mary anyday.
it was in this video that I realized how much RnB singer Rihanna resembles Florence Ballard. I hope someone does a movie about Florence Ballards life and give her the notarity she richly diserves.
Diana's right earring falls off at 1:52. She catches it in the nook of her elbow, right below her right breast, and immediately drops into her left hand. You can still see it there between 2:05 and 2:25.
At 2:35, in one quick movement, she chucks it across the stage.
DAMN!!! flo was sexy! gr8 clip of the most famous gospel recording of all time! but check out the unreleased version on the supremes box set limted edition set! will take your breath away!!!!!!
She drops it behind her. She does not catch it. Its not in her hand when she ends the song. Want to see the greatest "grab" in rock and roll history??? Nancy Sinatra drops the microphone and catches it at her knees in THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING on the Ed Sullivan show.
i felt that mary & florence were much prettier than diana. i also wanted to mention that the camera focused too much on diana. it should have been all three on camera mostly. those were cute dance & hip moves. we may have missed a lot. i'm in tears when i see florence.
Technicolor was a special colour process for film, which began to be phased out in the mid-1950s, whereas this is amazing 1966 colour television videotape :D
Was 1966 the peak year of their success as "The Supremes?" This mid-60's era on Sullivan seemed to feature the best staging and camera work on them as a complete group rather than just "Diana Ross" with two nondescript back-up singers. Great frames, like the 2-shot at 00:17 of Flo and Mary, and the wide shot at 00:50 of Ross shimmying into center spot, flanked by he other two. Great choreography, great use of tambourines, and great blue sequin halters. All three ladies are delicious.
I saw them at the Minnesota State Fair (circa 1967?). They drew a great crowd even though Minnesota was somewhat "homogenized" back then. Great sound! Great talent!
Love this song, I love the supremes!!! in the 60's my aunts and mom they are Native American, styled there her after there's I see pictures with the hair-do's and they all loved the Supremes backed then...
@TheReturnOfStephan1 I think the universe was in line for all three of them at that moment. It was perfection and genius. The power of three souls in aggrement is very strong. All good things come to an end, but for a breif time, The Supremes were a powerfull force and their legacy shoud allways be respected.
I remember Mom playing this music growing up ... I just remembered the music ... loved it ... years later - I can see these ladies were beautiful and classy ... true American history here.

Flo and Diana are certainly attractive, but I can't pry my eyes off of Mary Wilson. Elegant Goddess!

i can somewhat agree rihanna does sumwhat look like florence

it was in this video that I realized how much RnB singer Rihanna resembles Florence Ballard. I hope someone does a movie about Florence Ballards life and give her the notarity she richly diserves.

she (the lead singer) lost an earing at 1:50-1:52 watch closley at her right ear lol mwhahahahaha
t00sd3y 2 years ago
yea! what happened to it? I didn't see it fall or anything.
carpet1989 2 years ago
Diana's right earring falls off at 1:52. She catches it in the nook of her elbow, right below her right breast, and immediately drops into her left hand. You can still see it there between 2:05 and 2:25.
At 2:35, in one quick movement, she chucks it across the stage.
That's how you handle a "wardrobe malfunction".:)
TheReturnOfStephan1 2 years ago 6
i see it now. thank u.
i had to watch it again to catch the movements. I laughed at the end, that sure is how to handle a wardrobe malfunction.

Thanks for this precious live footage of my favorite Supremes song. Too bad it's the Ed Sullivan house band instead of the Funk Brothers underneath.

didnt diana drop an earring and catch it?
jeffdon4 2 years ago
yes!!!!!
karameldreem 2 years ago
She drops it behind her. She does not catch it. Its not in her hand when she ends the song. Want to see the greatest "grab" in rock and roll history??? Nancy Sinatra drops the microphone and catches it at her knees in THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING on the Ed Sullivan show.
genecorrado 2 years ago
yes she caught it and threw it off to the side when they started the symphony album medley.

i felt that mary & florence were much prettier than diana. i also wanted to mention that the camera focused too much on diana. it should have been all three on camera mostly. those were cute dance & hip moves. we may have missed a lot. i'm in tears when i see florence.

Yes, a seamlessly choreographed video filmed in "cutting edge" Technicolor, no less...
winrx 2 years ago
Technicolor was a special colour process for film, which began to be phased out in the mid-1950s, whereas this is amazing 1966 colour television videotape :D
rainlori 2 years ago

I really wish that VH1 would begin airing the Ed Sullivan & Cher Shows again, as opposed to the "reality" shows currently aired by the channel.

Not only did Diana Ross effortlessly catch her right earring, she also then chucked it across the stage at 2:36, during her initial bow.
Brilliant execution, as always!:)

@TheReturnOfStephan1 I think the universe was in line for all three of them at that moment. It was perfection and genius. The power of three souls in aggrement is very strong. All good things come to an end, but for a breif time, The Supremes were a powerfull force and their legacy shoud allways be respected.
