This song is from his "Welcome to Paradise" album which came out in the 70s. It's called "Keep Me Running". That album has some great stuff on it...available in CD.
You know I had recorded this video from Jim and Tammy 's daughters show years ago. Some one broke into my home in Santa Rosa California and took the VCR with this tape in it and a bunch of musical equipment too. I always hoped the Christian Music recorded on that tape would show the thief or someone the way to Christ. Thanks for sharing the video and reminding of that.
Randy and Larry Norman came to Messiah College in the late 70's. Larry's plane was late and Randy's set was done. So he improvised for almost an hour til Larry finally got there. His improvision was even better that the planned concert. What a trooper!
I remember seeing Randy when he came to some school gymnasium or church hall in New Jersey to play a concert in the early Nineties. He joked around about problems with the PA and so forth, and kept the whole crowd going while the glitches got ironed out - repeatedly - throughout the show. I was blown away by his good humour and efforts to give everybody a good show for the ten bucks or so that we were all paying to see this awesome performer. A consummate showman and incredibly likable guy.
I've loved this guy for 30 years. He once smiled at me and told me to get a life. (I did.) This is my favorite song of his to play on the guitar. He's awesome in concert. Great guitarist - high energy. I don't think he's very comfortable on the motorcycle. :o)
Randy released Welcome to Paradise, album that contains Keep Me Running, in April of 1976.Taking it to the Streets, the album that contains It Keeps You Running was released in March of 1976. So it's unlikely that Randy ripped off the song from the album. Besides, the studio version sounds more remincent of the Eagles not the Doobies.
I presonally remember the DB's song didn't hit the radio until Fall of '76 after I already had bought Stonenill's album that Summer & worn it out! Besides, his song doesn't sound a damn thing like theirs.
hmm.. let's see\\..\\I think Randy S. hasn't gotten much praise or? for huid great guitar playin'! God BLess ya Randy- enjoy you in concert-in the car-shower etc,..God Bless y'all-KEEP RUNNING FOR THE PRIZE!!
Rockin' Randy Stonehill! What a great guy! A talented artist, concerned, compassionate, realistic, and always fun! Keep performing Randy, and we'll keep buying your work!
This is a great song. Thanks for posting. Check out my Denny Correll videos too. Denny was also a pioneer in the early days of CCM. He was the lead singer for "Blues Image". God got a hold of him and changed his life. His music was powerful. Denny went to be with Jesus in 2002 at the age of 56. Thanks again.
Man what a singer/song-writer...I'm not a Christian, but i remember hearing this music years ago...I've look everywhere to find the original cut from his Welcome to Paradise album...can anyone help me find it on the net?
Amazing footage. Who else can play lead and rhythm on an acoustic guitar at the same time while singing. What a talent. What a song. Thanks for posting
These artists were part pf a movement, not part of an industry so you can't compare the two groups. Nashville kills music, it's unavoidable. Now if you were young you would find some self produced Christian hip hop acts that would knock you out.
I've always loved this song, and so many of his others...including almost all of The Sky is Falling. I had the "privilege" of buying Randy his first Wendy's hamburger back in 1976 when I was part of the team that sponsored him for a concert in Westerville, OH at the only HS there (there are 3 now). Those were the days, baby! ;-)
Man. If today's kids only knew. I made sure my kids got an overload of this old stuff as they grew up. Today, well, they all love it and it stays with them like it has with me. My son is a musician today due in part to Larry taking the time to talk to a 12yo little boy and signing an album for him. Randy was that way to me when I was 12. Sigh. Those days. It was real back then.
randy and larry were big influences from the get go..Stonehill.. soulful,, welcome to paradise definitely a fav.... "we're all like foolish puppets who desiring to be kings.. ly pitifully crippled after cutting our own strings."
my parents grew up listening to him, and i personally think he is incredible too. my parents have all his albums lol and i have welcome to paradise, and i LOVE it:)
i was a toddler when this was made. so it may surprise you to know my opinion is that it is a shame that current christian artists can't write songs with this kind of depth or play guitar beyond four chords! (that or they don't - because of the "wor$hip mu$ic" fad) anyway - i'm a christian, but it's been 10 years since i bought a ccm record from a bookstore.
This is one of Randy's all time best! This song just says so much that so many want to say, especially in those times when all you want to do is run. This is my favorite version by the way!
Thanks for posting this! Since this supposedly aired on Light Music, one thought I have always had is what Randy must have felt or thought at first when Tom Green passed on. That was a real loss!
I started listening to Stonehill back in '74! I've always been impressed w/ his use of satire -like here. And like in those songs "Christine" and "Lung Cancer." Fantastic voice and great songs!!
wow back in the 70's I was a real live teenage Jesus freak ! Long dress on the street witnesing and everything. Randy Stonehill, Keith Green, Randy Matthews and John Michael Talbot made a huge difference in my Christian life. And they still do.
i remember in 78 or so, keith green came to a little church and we saw him play. he was incredible. also, witnessing on the street barefoot, calvary chapel, warehouse concerts in sacramento, then....years later, the brainwashing lifted. Now a happy atheist, sorry.
I was a happy atheist until the weight of evidence swayed me to believe the Bible. Several years later still finding biblical Christian theology the only self consistent philosophy. Atheism removes all foundation for morality, which even most atheists cant stomach.
cretmg: I'm sorry your brain was washed.Atheism absolutely does not remove the foundation for morality. Who told you that? Mans life is his standard of morality. Man's existence, defines his morality..What is good and helpful to life is the good and moral. What is harmful and detrimental to life is evil, and immoral..Easy. You don't need god to figure out right and wrong. I'm sorry you fell for the tooth fairy story. You don't need a savior. Youre not a sinner. You are not separated from god.
Ill never remeber this post, or even that you exsited. but for now I will remember and ask you how many mutations and accidents and years, did it take before humans had eyes that conected to a brain to figure this all out. Time plus nothing = everything.
I just dont have the faith to beleive that.
come back to the truth JohnnyK, He still loves you.
garthus: I'm sorry you have such a twisted Christian view of evolution. You can't get something from nothing. Eyes, nor anything else evolved from accident....But blah blah blah to you huh???...Reserve your faith for something that has no proof or evidence of existing. That's the definition of faith.
Without a being outside of the cause-and-effect universe, there can be no objective standard of morality. You say 'what is helpful to life is good', but I can say with equal standing 'that's just your opinion: who cares about life?' You have no way to rebut any opposing opinion.
A factual Right and Wrong must be defined by something with authority beyond nature (ie, supernatural). As an atheist, you deny that very thing. Morality can only be built on God.
Right and wrong do not need an outside authority. What is beneficial, helpful to an object or organism is moral, or right. What is detrimental, hurtful to the object is immoral, or wrong. Morality flows from the object itself. This is very simple. The only reason why you don't accept this or want to complicate matters is because if i'm right, you have no need for your god.
Logic flaw: if it is beneficial for me to eat your food so you starve, thus moral, and detrimental to you, thus immoral, you have no actual standard. All nature competes for sustenance. Is morality mere survival of the fittest? By your definition Hitler was moral so long as he survived, because it benefited him. That is no standard of morality. PS - let's take this whole thread off Randy's video link.
I know you don't need him, because you are soooo smart, but I sure do because I was sooo lost and undone by my own self, I sure am glad that he LOVED me enough to resuce from being soooo stupid. Send me a post card and let me know how you make out being soooo smart.

Nice song but isn't the melody a rip-off of the Dobbie Brothers "It Keeps You Running"?

This song preceeded the Doobie Bro's song by many years. So if anything, the Doobies were the ones ripping off the melody

I still brake guitar strings pounding out this song.
Its hard not to.
I dont quite play it like this version
this song is so simple but the lyrics tell the journy of all christains, and the guitar just flat out rocks
im lucky i got to see Randy and Larry Norman in the early days in Chicago.
thank you for sharing this video
