i remember seeing fantasy in 1970 or 71 in Miami Fla. at the Miami Beach Convention center free summer Tthursday night concerts i was around 13 what good memories that was a great time all the Hippies Thank God for You Tube its so nice to go back in time and bring up memories you haven't thought of in years
@kycows Hell yeah, I went to thos free concerts!! I was beginning to believe I was the only person that remembered them! I remember Fantasy, Edgar & Johnny Winter, etc...
YEAH!!! I finally found it, "Stoned Cowboy"!! Why does this music stay with us 40yrs after? It must be MAGIC man!! I have NEVER forgotten this music, but I never heard much more Fantasy after I moved to Dover Delaware in 72 or sumpin, , but Stoned Cowboy was always in my mind! I probably havent heard this since 72 and it sounds better than ever maybe cuz sound equip is 40 yrs advanced. ?40 yrs? WOW!!! A large part of me is still in the 70's, as u may realize.
Is this the same band that had a record in the 70's with songs called "we look out at you" and "now you're in the puzzle"? I used to live in Miami and a friend had this record.
I can't imagine it without Jamene...even though in Stoned Cowboy she didn't do a lot, she was still a major stage presence anytime....she didn't always have to sing to add to the music...she helped make the group what it was.
Yes, they played quite a few places for a few years until they went to the West Coast. We played with them and Brownsville Station in Daytona around 1972 after Jemene had left the band. They played well, but without Jemene it wasn't the same.
I was 13 living in Arvada, Colorado when this song became a hit in 1970. The Denver radio stations played this a lot. This was my favorite song of 1970. My brother has the vinyl album. I read that Fantasy changed their name to "Year One" in 1971 a put out a double album, but I haven't heard it, though I would like to!
Even though I lived in South Florida at the time, I never came across the Year One album. I did not find out about it till years later. It is after the late Jemene Miller left the group. I worked a show in Daytona with Fantasy after Jemene left but there was no mention of Jemene. At this show I don't recall them having a singer, must have been a transistional gig, they were still called Fantasy at this show. If you go to the Limestone Lounge list, there is info there about South Florida bands
If my memory serves me there was also a shorter 45 rpm version of Stoned Cowboy. I just played Mongoose, very good! I don't remember ever hearing that on radio. I moved up to Anchorage in March, 1971 and heard Double Barrel. I was struck by Anchorage radio being about 6 months behind Denver radio. Example: Timothy by The Buoys was just becoming a hit in 1971, but it was a hit in Denver in 1970.
Yes, I had the Sugarloaf debut album with Green Eyed Lady. That was one of goodies in 1970. Then in 1971 they put out the album Spaceship Earth. They were good at keyboards and singing.
Flashback on Denver radio: "Hammerhead" by Rare Bird. That was 1970. The album is fantastic, called "As Your Mind Flies By." They applied fuzz to a piano, making interesting sounds.
@FeitenFan Hangin' at Lum's, gettin high on Hashish. Ziggy's head shop. Four way street (the store). Oak feed....What glorious days. Saw Fantasy on the beach at a free concert.
Lums, especially in Coconut Grove in the late 60's was such a great time. Many a great show at Bayside Park and Monty Trainer's. Long live Fred Niel !!
Sure, I remember WBUS and WSHE, WQAM and WFUN and WMUM (mother, out of West Palm) all great stations. Unfortunaly, Lydia Miller, the singer for Fantasy died a few months ago, a great singer.
She died about 6 months ago or so. She evidently had some cardiac issues and it evidently caught up with her. If you go to the Limestone Lounge there are many discussions about her. Limestone Lounge is about South Florida bands and is a great site. Jemene was a great singer and when I saw her in Fantasy I thought she and the band were great stuff. She should have been a much bigger star but was hard to work with, great singer though.
I was in high school in Coral Gables, Florida when Stoned Cowboy hit the airwaves. It was a big hit in Miami during the summer of 1970. Fantasy used to rehearse in a house right around the corner from my friends house and we used to ride our bikes over and they'd rehearse with the garage door open so we could watch. Their eponymous album (Liberty LST-7643), which I still have, was a favorite of mine in 1970. Lydia (Jamene) had a great voice and it saddens me to hear that she's gone.
I've tried several ways to direct everyone who would like to read and sign her guestbook but the almighty YouTube won't allow anything that looks like a
L I N K. Just type in her name, Jamene Miller followed by the usual ending.
WoW!!! That is very sad to hear. Last I heard she was in Nashville? For the local South Florida scene of the late 60's & early 70's an icon of sorts has passed. A real dissapointment. :-(
Jamene was in Nashville awhile but passed away in her Miramar (Florida) home where she was under house arrest for a felony charge of trafficking of Oxycontin. She had a recent history of a heart problem and the coronor is waiting for the toxicology report. An interesting fact about Jamene is that she turned the opportunity to be lead for the band War who had hit's Spill The Wine and Why Can't We Be Friends.
Wel, that is even more of a shame. I was doing sound for a band in South Florida during 1969-72 and when Fantasy booted her there was a chance she was going to do a solo with this band (Savage) backing her. We were at her apt and heard the solo album she made in CA at that time, I recall it being good but never got a copy. I do have some of her solo studio work from the mid 70's when I did some re-processing of cassetts for her old boyfriend a few years ago. It is good stuff.
This is weird, I was trying to tell a freind about this song that I listened to all the time growing up in S. Fl(hollywood) Never could find song anywhere or anyone that heard of it. Found it on youtube tonight...wow..by the way peaple, I worked at pirates world so did my bro, he was a pirate and I worked rides and security...got drum sticks from some now famous groups too!
Pirates World was a great place. I saw many a show there and it always had the best bands of the time. I saw Jefferson Airplane there in 1968, the second show they ever did after the Young Rascals. I never did the amusement park thing, but always went to rock shows. I saw the Dead, Pink Floyd and Captain Beefheart all for $3. I also saw Peter Green come out of "retirement" with Fleetwood Mac and play wah-wah pedal for 11/2 hours, one of the best shows I ever saw. Peter Green was great.
I can't believe I found this vid.I had online music service and could never find this song. Thanks for posting.
To mention about it being only played in S Fl, I lived in Coral Gables 1970-71 and the bass player from Fantasy lived right down the street. I met him once.
Whenever I'm near a keyboard I manage to play this song to this day, how funny.
I was a surfer from West Palm Beach and this song came out my senior year of high school. It was one of my all time favorites. I remember listening to it at the beach, back when we were all still cool. Ha!
Oh yeah, WMUM (Mother), WSHE, WBUS (Magic Bus), WIRK and WCKO (The Big KO Radio from Pompano Beach Florida with the soulful sounds of Bunny Love)were all great radio staions in the late 60's and early 70's. It was great growing up in South Florida then, now, well we all watch COP's.
I've had this song in my head for 30 years but could not connect with who recorded it. My brother came through with the group and search. Thanks for posting...now I know.
Glad to help clear the 30 year fog. Live this was always a show highlight, I especially liked the "Mommas Shortnin' Bread" part. Live it was about 10 or 15 minutes long, if I remember right.
First of all - thanks to whoever posted this. I remembered Stoned Cowboy from high school. Both Robbins brothers attended Beach High at the same time I did. They performed at Thee Image and Miami Jai-Lai and some larger venues while I was a young teenager. S/C is an unforgettable tune that ignites great memories for me. Hearing this again feels like a 37 year high school reunion.
You are welcome. I lived in Ft Lauderdale at the time and saw Fantasy a lot. The great thing about YouTube is it is kind of like a Time Machine in that a lot of long forgotten things have been resurected. This aspect for me is the best thing about YouTube, being able to see things long forgotten.
You Tube is much more than a time machine - It's a world wide forum to share ideas and ideals in a very real way. Music is the easiest way that all people can find a common ground. Words are the way we can understand each other. Going back, to your Time Machine idea, there were incredible rock concerts at Gulfstream Park... multiple stages so you could see almost EVERY major band of the time. It was a great time to be young. Again, your extra steps to post this are appreciated.
My Father lived in Miami in the summer of 69" in Coconut grove and was friends with the band. Jim Demeo and Billy Robbins used to hang at his house. His rock band named Grit from Tennessee was the house Band at Pirates World. They were in a movie with the Iron Butterfly made by Ivan Tours at Pirates World. They also opened up for Johnny and Edgar Winter for two nights.
I Was such a little kid during that time, but i do recall alot of what was going on during that generation.
