I only just started playing this. Just curious exactly how does the battle system work here?

Well, to put it simply, defenders damage adds to the "wall" (the points in the middle), while attackers damage subtracts from the "wall" a battle cannot be won unless secured by one of the forces, (all the way on the top or all the way on the bottom)

The wiki tells you all of this much better than I can...
