Sometimes you get the best music from simple instruments. In You Tube search "Robert S. Hilton" and look for the video of me and my friend Yusef playing some simple instruments that I made.
1st instrument: Two Fuji film canisters, & local tree branches, 20 strings, 2 groups of 8 open strings each tuned to an harmonic minor scale in the fifth mode. 4 slide strings in the center tuned to an open minor chord 1,3,5,1.
2nd instrument: Stereo instrument, a paint can and a pineapple juice can, and local tree branches, 18 strings, 1 group of 4 bass strings tuned D,F#,A,D. 1 group of 6 slide strings in the center D,Eb,G,A,Bb,D. 1 group of 8 open strings tuned D,Eb,F#,G,A,Bb,C#,D.
The can is a five gallon can. The flexible stick is a piece of heavy split bamboo. It is connected to the side of the can with wire looped around it and twisted inside the can. The wire is music wire .035". I added bottle caps to the vibrating surface to give it the buzz. There are six caps connected loosely in three pairs through the top near where the string connects, one inside and one outside in each set. The whole instrument is held together with twisted wire except for the pickup and jack.
These are just a couple of short video clips shot with a digital still camera at an art opening. The voices are so loud because the camera is in the crowd.
Homemade instruments are the past, present and future of music. What once was obscure, becomes a common instrument. Your music will be original, and will add to music itself.
1)I always work on numerous projects at once so sometimes I don't finish things until I get back around to them. So they might take months or years. 2)These particular instruments use industrial recycled materials as well as natural sticks and branches. The first has film cannisters and the second has a paint can and juice can. 3)I start by developing the concepts in my journal. Then I look for the materials that I will use. I determine the order of the construction processes.
Wow, sounds great. I think that (please correct me if I am wrong) the reason it sounds so unique and arabic sounding is that it is tuned in quarter steps.
The 1st instrument is tuned in a Harmonic minor scale. the 2nd is tuned in a Middle Eastern scale called Hitsaz Kier which has several successive half steps. The slide strings on each let me play any notes and between the notes.
that was amazing. also dont be offended by this but it sounds like somthing you would get high wile listening to lol. any way awsome gui.... ummmmm instruments?
the sound makes me want to go to sleep...but I am not saying it's boring, it sounds like the music you would hear in a dream...it's nice...thanks for the vid, keep up the work.
Love that sound! How do you get that sitar-like resonance on the first instrument? I think it's got something to do with that "thing" on the upper end. How do you attach it? Thanks.
What you are hearing is mostly the sympathetics from the open strings kicking in. The extra resonator at the top is to pick up the inverse note on the other side of the slide. With it plugged in as it is you can't realy hear that sound. On the second instrument you can just hear it.
As with two others commenting here, the sounds and appearances remind me of Harry Partch's music. Would this music be called microtonal? Is Partch an influence?
Partch is one of my heroes. I don't try to copy him but he is a great inspiration. These two instruments have open strings that are tuned in non-western scales, but on the slide strings I spend a lot of time between the notes. I'm hoping to get videos of some of my other instruments up soon.
that was awesome. i love the sound, very foreign and exotic like. way cool. i love the second instrument. resembles an asian instrument i've seen in pictures.
and again, i love the sound! blows me away how awesome homemade instruments can sound with much talent.
Your music takes me on a journey in time, back to my youth a spiritual time. Our days were filled with music of ravi shankar and cannned heat and quicksilver messenger service and jefferson airplane and I can't forget donovan all beautiful music. thanks
The first instrtument has 20 strings. The center 4 are an open minor chord 1, 3, 5, 8. The two groups of 8 strings are tuned in a harmonic minor scale in the fifth mode.
The second instrument has 18 strings in 3 groups. The 4 bass strings D,F#,A,D. The 6 slide strings D,Eflat,G,A,Bflat,D. The 8 open strings D,Eflat, F#,G,A,Bflat,C#,D.
Thanks. I'm planning to make some video clips of some of my other pieces when I have some time. You can see in the background of this video a horn which uses two tea kettles and a series of springs to make some unusual sounds.
I never heard Fripp's Frippertronics. Thanks for telling me about it. 1979 loops and effects with TAPE. I always loved King Crimson, but I hadn't ever seen Fripp's purely exirimental side. It's awesome!
