  • nature giveth nature taketh

  • wow my high school played this with three middle schools and it sounded nowhere close! but it's a beautiful piece, and i like how every instrument has a wonderful part! nobody is overshadowed in this piece.

  • I know this song's about a nat'l park, but I've always pictured it as a battle in RTW. Judean Rebels vs some opposing army. In the beginning, camera pans over the battlefield and focuses on an army, it shows the main people of the Judean army, then they start marching. At 1:18, the general shouts, "Units, Charge!" They start running, run toward the enemy, at 1:28 the Judean Zeleots raise their shields, put the spears forward, and shout out their charge and enter the fray.

  • If this is the song from the OMEA Convention..1997, that is the Versailles H.S. Wind Ensemble. To answer an earlier question, yes it is the same Michael Berning now at Kettering.

  • I played this last semester. its a good one. i play oboe.

  • @goodguy630

wow i have only met one other oboe player in my life! i play oboe too. it's a great instrument, right?

  • @pawsroc97 oh absolutely. and thats awesome u play oboe too...

  • Im playing this song man. Its a beautiful thing really. Especially when the claranet and trumpet question/answer part is amazing!

  • My band is playing this! It is such an amazing song! we are also playing Goddess of Fire by the same composer!

Every four years we play Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons by him as well. I have not played it yet, but I have heard it, and the people who have played it all say they love it.

  • Mike Berning? Would that be the same Mike Berning that conducts for Kettering, OH currently?

  • Yes this is the same Mike Berning. He was at Versailles H.S. before going to Kettering. If this song is from the OMEA convention 1997, it is being performed by the Versailles Wind Ensemble.

  • While I may not be religious, I cannot help but listen to this song every once in a while.

It's beautifully orchestrated and it makes me think of a young boy exploring a large forest in the beginning. Then, near the middle the boy comes across an abandoned temple and explores it, eventually reaching the top of a spire and looking out over the forest he came through. He then hears his mother calling him, and leaves the temple as the end of the song plays.

  • Great Observation! Thanks for your interest in Concert Band

  • I play the baritone horn in my high school band, and I've been playing since the 6th grade. You know how to appreciate music when you've spent over four years learning and playing it.

And this song is definitely worth appreciation.
