  • you guys did it suuuuuper slow

  • CHEDITE

  • I love this song....

  • @CALLMEPAPi5, you just made my day! Iowa, represent!

  • yea...whoever's choir sang it faster than this, like my choir, lost the essence of each chord in the song. and especially when the "who do you persecute me" starts, you cant make that any faster. but its up to interpretation. The director of that year has conducted all over the world so it should be hard to criticize...

  • tempo :(

  • Love this song!! My choir sang this song last year! It's so intense and amazing!

On an unrelated but funny note, I was watching this on my iPhone with my headphones, but paused it and forgot I had it on. Later my phone randomly started playing this song from the start, and I didn't recognize the chanting at the beginning. I was so freaked out, I thought I was hearing voices in my head! ...but then I realized I was just hearing this song thru my headphones. :) silly me~

  • Alabama All-State is doing it this year.

    Excited? Why yes. :D

  • I think this song is really well done! We're singing this for our spring concert and I'm extremely excited.

  • Every single note that the basses and altos sang in the "why do you persecute me" section was a half step lower than it should have been.

  • I still get chills when I listen to this. I miss this choir. I want a reunion! lol

  • omgsh we're gonna be singing this for our concert next month <3 amazing song

  • Yea... we performed this kind of slow. I preferred it when we did it Region. The conductor did it like WAY faster, which was amazing.

  • alabama is better :)

  • i watched the parkway south high school choir do this song but faster but its still cool its an amazing song

  • were singing this in our choir. except were going faster.

  • nobody cares

  • wow this sounded wonderful! i loveeee this song.

  • one best ive heard but i couldn't hear the bass 2 on that note need that rumbling sound

  • I love this song. Gladwin High School Wings of Harmony Choir did this song with about twenty people.

  • New Mexico allstate is singing this with Stroope. =D

    Can't wait for january.

  • ahh, jealous. :]

  • @royce97 He's amazing. Ugh... just... wow.

  • Yeah, this is the honors chorus tryout song for NC this year. Our vocal ensemble is just singing it for our fall concert. It's amazing that we've picked it up so quickly, especially since we only have five men and the hardest part (Alto I) is being sung by possibly six sophomores and two seniors. It's hard, but absolutely exhilirating.

  • This is my try out song for honors chrous this year.

  • Comment removed

  • this piece was great but a bit too slow at the beginnig to me at least but great nevertheless. Armstrong directed our concert choir as well and although i wasnt...honored with his presence because i was reading choir most of the stories my frinds told me were terrible about how meticulous he was in achieving perfectiion with their pieces. and they sounded great because of it even though hes a crazy evangelist who at the concert told us, the audience to convert

  • love this song sooooo much... i didnt make state my sophomore year, but i remember this whole song as if it were yesterday, that and darkling thrush omjesus

  • no place like texas. i miss singing this song!

  • This is really good! My choir performed the piece I Am Not Yours by Stroope and it was incredible! You should check out that piece.

  • My choir sang it much faster, but I like it at this pace... it allows all the consonance to sink in...

But at 2:15 to 2:20, they way over did it. It sounds cheesy.. x_x

  • I agree. I was in this choir and the decision to almost shout "vexate" and "saul" from 2:00 or so to 2:20 was probably one of the only decisions made by the director (who was AMAZING) with which I disagreed.

  • Dr. Armstrong was my conductor for the '06 NC Middle school Honors Chorus- he is the BEST I've ever seen, heard, or sung under.

His thing it text, for those who don't know- which is why it may sound cheesy (but if you were there-you would be crying.)

  • You aren't hardcore...

  • OMG! I was a Bass 1! It was freakin amazing!

  • i love stroope's version. i mean i've met the guy, but man, i can believe i actually sang this. once you learn it, it's not that big of a deal but lol. too bad he made me a B1.....=( i just got that low Eb too *sigh* "Omnia Sol" is nice too (by him of course)

  • yea i sang that song at all northwest...i was a B1 too

  • my schools doing this this year. it literally like gives me goosebumps this piece is so amazing, and this verson was verrrry well done =]

  • whats the genre?

  • Oh, I'm so gonna be in this choir next year. You just wait.

  • Tennessee??

  • Texas.

  • Yay my Roomie sang in this choir. =)

  • Tx all state will wreck any other all state choir

  • str8 up....best that high school has to offer

  • Iowa would definitely give them a run for their money.

  • Totally have to agree!

  • @forsureyo1 Tell that to Colorado, punk!

  • @forsureyo1 uh Alabama's got you bro

  • @bigboy122333444

    lol, doubt it

  • @forsureyo1 You may have yet to listen to the Iowa All-State Choir. When you listen to at least 3 consecutive years of each state's choir, and still think Texas' is the best I will 1) Respect your opinion 2) Call you an idiot due to the fact that Texas' All-State Choir is messy and not consistently in tune. Singing loud is one thing, singing beautifully is another. Peace for sure YO.

  • @CALLMEPAPi5 This is false...1) The tuning is good. So you can suck it on that one. 2) Alot of this sounds dirty due to the hall these are recorded in and how LARGE THE CHOIR IS. There is a reason however why most of the Major Universities and Coservatorys pull from Texas. THE EDUCATION IS BETTER. So yea, peace for sure. And while Iowa may be good, Don't knock the choirs untill you've sung in them. DON'T TALK ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES FROM LISTENING BUT INSTEAD FROM LIVING IT!!

  • really slow but awesome

  • I sang this two years ago... badass song...

  • the lack of speed does take away from the intensity.

other than that it was great.

  • i think the dramatic emphasis they sang on everything made up for the lack of speed.if you saw these guys singin this you would be think..."This shit is intense!!!"

  • After listening to it a time or two, I agree. You could hear the individual notes and rhythms (but in a good way!), which highlighted the complexity of the music. While faster tempos can give it a more "excited" feel, it was nice to be able to follow along in the score and be able to tell what was being sung.

  • i think a few of the seniors from my school were in this choir.

i know my boyfriend tried out for this choir but got second alternate and didn't get to perform.

now we're doing it in class.

    it's a great song.

    no matter the speed.

    :]

  • This song deserves an epic BRIII... Only song I memorized from State repetoire.. Need to memorize the three I actually need to -.-

  • i agree i love the faster version way more

  • this is too slow!!!! thats my only problem with it!!! wen we did it texas it was faster. it needs to blend more. and its very disjunked

  • Well... this is the Texas All State Choir. So this is also Texas.

  • I'm doing this song in NJ All state, OMG, it's awesome!!! especially the slower section! hahaha

but the chords at 1:35-1:40, a little weird. haha

  • Yeah! NJ All-State was awesome. we did this so much faster though.

  • i LOVE the way we did it. it was like perfect.

even though i personally thing kalinda was awesome. even though at NJPAC the end was soo fast the girl couldn't keep up. w/e. it was awesome.

  • Yeah, I agree with the horrible echoing. You can hear it. I didn't make it to State that year, but I did do that song at the Pre-Area concert and man, it was crazy. But amazing!

  • Great sound. Can't stand the tempo. Haha. This song is really incredible though. I want to sing it again.

  • The most challenging thing was staying with the girls becuase we(the men) echoed so they didnt know which one to listen to ha.

never the less it was amazing =]

  • wow you guys are really good at this speed, it probably wouldnt have taken that much work to speed it up to where it's supposed to be. and in the slow section, the guys are kind of overpowering when the chant the vexate and whatnot, becuase i believe the music says to whipser it...like fading into the angelic section. but the first half is soooo slow that i get bored on the repeat.

  • thanks but i think some people forget that we are just the singers in the choir and not the directors, because trust me if we had it our way we wouldve gone A LOT faster

  • thanks but i think some people forget that we are just the singers in the choir and not the directors, because trust me if we had it our way we wouldve gone A LOT faster

  • i think with the whispering part got a little overpowered because there are over 200 singers in the choir and the yeah the conductors do have the power when it comes to speed

  • This is amazing and for those who are hating on this song or Texas music its because they know we and are All-State Choirs are better than theres! Because you know what we have that they dont????? BLEND and MUSICALITY and feeling. We also know what we are singing!

  • i'll second that i was in the mixed choir in texas 4 years in a row and difficulty wise and musicality texas was known for the best.

  • were you in the 2005 all-state mixed choir

  • thats awesome! sometimes i wish i could go back and do it all over again and have that same feeling you know

  • were you in the 2005 all-state mixed choir

  • no i was in 2000-2003

  • Beautifully performed! Our choir did this piece as well. I do think it's rather sad though that many people here seem to have missed the entire point Stroope was trying to accomplish though with all of these disagreements/arguments over various interpretations. "Turn hatred into love..."

  • Whoever thinks this is bad is f*cking stupid... this is one of the best versions of this song I've ever heard. The stomping only makes it batter. And the pace and rhythm is perfect. You ppl that don't like this video don't know much about music. Learn and then comment.

  • dude...someone needs to post 2007 All State doing Serenade to Music. just a suggestion i think everyone will enjoy

  • Totally agree

  • q porqueri naesta mierda gringos de mierda

  • theevmeisters choir version of this song is fast. they are like being chased down by some dogs that the words cant be understood and sme parts are out of tune. and the blending is not good.

  • And it well should be, look up what they're saying, sweety. they sound more like they're listing grievances than condemning souls. read darknessclaimme's comment below. my sentiments exactly.

  • I know, your choir interpreted the song "correctly" by singing it "fast". But who cares if you interpreted it correctly but your sound ain't good? the only correct thing you did is the interpretation. aside from that, everything is a mess. sound, blending, everything. but this version has everything good in it except for the speed ayt? learn to accept criticisms from other people.if you cant, then i guess you just cant accept the FACT that there are other better versions than your choirs version

  • lovely how the commentors all disagree with you.

  • i think there only 2 of you? well, just a suggestion dude, llearn to accept criticisms and facts. okay? don't be shallow minded. i can see how you defend your choirs interpretation. grow up man, be mature in accepting criticisms. ayt? peace =p

  • indeed. <3

  • First off the song is meant to be much faster than this. This is absolutely the slowest I've ever heard this song, we haven't even praticed this -this- slow. Good god, this song is literally like 7 minutes as is. Your stomps are patheic. I mean the words that you are sings, what have no value to this choir, or it seems. The words are Bind! Murder! Harass, why does this sound like a barney sing-a-long to me? And where are all the parts. I can hear the sopranos and the bass's chanting monotonously.

  • indeed. very slow and whats with banging

  • This is my favorite song so far in my music times, I LOVE the ending when they say bow down saul, I love worshiping Lord jesus christ with this song, (=

  • what an incredible piece. stop fighting over different interpretations of it.

  • for those of you saying this version is too slow, I've uploaded last year's region XX conversion of saul. it's taken at a much faster pace

  • ive heard that already. this interpretation is much better. though slower, the accents are clear, blending is awesome, and the female voice powerful but not overpowering. unlike the one from region XX, blending not clear, women were weak and the female voice sounded small..

this one is waaaaay much better. the only difference is the speed...

  • now instead of bickering like an old woman, think of this choir performing at the speed region XX took. and then take a few valium to relieve your high blood pressure.

  • by the way, i bet you havent been hearing or you HAVE not heard any internationally acclaimed choirs?? and all you know is your region xx whatever you call that choir. try searching for choirs who won the European Grand Prix for choral singing. btw, try listening to BYU Singers, University of Utah Singers, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Vesna Childrens Choir.

  • and take special note of what you're spouting off as unnoticed revelations, captain obvious. saying that all-state choir is better than one of the 25 some-odd regions that are pulled from to construct it is just... *insert demeaning insult here.*

  • haha. see who's having high blood pressure?? was just saying my oppinion and now that violent reaction from you? defensive. haha. cmon, this is waaay better. you are defensive coz you are in the other choir who sang the faster version. and you cant take criticisms well.

  • i invite you to listen to the all-state videos i'll be uploading in two months once i receive the copies of me singing in them. and you dont need to invite me to listen to any of those choirs. i'm quite aware of them. <3

  • I don't care about bickering i just think that this piece was done very well and is very beautiful in the way that they interpreted it. It certainly caught my attention when i first heard it and couldn't stop listening to it.

  • You can't really judge a choir, unless you also see the conductor. Each one has their own style, there is parts where he was a bit different than the practice tapes. But, to someone who didn't train their ears properly, or read the sheet music. It sounds beautiful.

  • See? I knew you agreed with me. I guess I just didn't explain it correctly. Once you get a choir to sing that piece the way you like it, please let me know. I'd love to hear it.

  • i remember this im in treble choir and i remember the stomping and stuff during concert

    go fwood~~

  • OMG! I was in this! lol

  • the best version I heard from all that is here in youtube. although the tempo is slow, you can hear clearly that each voice is singing the correct notes. cool! =p

  • This is a good choir, but I think this tempo is pretty slow. A choir this good should give the crazy fast tempo a shot.

  • i made it to area!!!! I can't wait till the audition. I wouldn't mind making the men's choir (Tenor2) because Z. Randall Stroope is Directing it

  • PMEA District 11 chorus, unless he's doing that too.

  • hey aching and battlegroup! i'm gonna be there too...i think! IMEA Honors All-state?? stoope's directing it. i'm pumped.

  • Now that i think of it, im not hearing the Bass II that well.

  • I'm singing this song in my choir. :) Second soprano

  • Hey Aching! I'm going to be in that choir too!

    3rd year, actually.

  • cool. What part do you sing.

  • In my districts choir we are doing this but the awsome part is Stroope is directing it. can't wait

  • still gives me chills

  • i miss this SO much

STATE AUDITIONS FOR REGION 25 ARE SOOOOON

    cant wait

  • I will be in that choir this year.

  • Oh so you did you make it in the pre-are auditions??

  • You'd think if you were singing it so slow, you'd at least be in synch more of the time.

  • i agree with robot. at our region concert last year, we sang it at a considerably hastened tempo, and my soul was torn asunder as i sung this song.

  • WOW, my chorale sang this song and it was tight, Z. Randall Stroope was there and he said we were good, i knew we weren't but it was tight, then i sat right behind him, it was neato burrito-thats my saying =D

  • I like your saying.

  • i prefer the slower tempo. especially around 1:03 and the other instances of "coooooondeeemnaaateee, condemnate" where the two words are sung at varying tempos. the same for the initial transition from latin to english, where they take the several "saul" bits very slowly. it seems more powerful to me that way, more dramatic

  • good song- but its too slow

  • i do agree, i'm from houston texas and i went to North Shore Senior High and we're from Region F i do believe and ours was taken at full speed.

  • Done well. But SO slow!! Its hard to imagine that a murderous crowd would act in slow motion?

  • Well, well, well WELL DONE!!

IMEA (Illinois) All-State Honors' Choir is having Z. Randall Stroope as their guest director this year, and they are singing this piece. I am extremely excited for a chance of being a part of this.

  • really? so am i? what voice part are you?

  • i remember doing this one

  • Were doing this in my mixed, Were one of the best in state and this is one of the easiest latin songs weve ever done!

  • this was REALLY good! cool too. I liked the relationship between each voice. and the texture of the piece was represented well by the choir. great job...leave it to All State to pull that off. WHOO HOO!

  • OMG THAT ME TOO!! I GOT HIS AUTOGRAPH afterwards...it was after or before we sang let everything have breath! right? no that one isnt our allstate for texas is it? i am thinking it was that was me dude!! i am so happy!!! This is so cool!!!

  • dude that was me!!!!!! i cant belive that omg!!!!!!

  • fantastic job, all-state!

i sang this piece in the region choir, and it completly moved me... it's such an awesome song that can be done so many ways... we sang it much faster and i liked it that way, but this is an interesting and new way of doing it. GREAT job!!!

  • How are you going to say we "effed" it up when the composer was there, if we "effed" it up im sure he would have said something =)

  • great job texas state band! once texas high school students prove to be the BEST music students in the states!

  • I think that they went way too slow. It sounds more epic sped up.

  • you guys might be able to sing this, but you totally effed up "Let Everything that hath Breath".

  • Again mr. Gibbs, Ames personally changed the way "Let everything..." was to be performed.

  • What?

  • Mr. Ames was the acompianist at state...i think he wouldnt let them "eff up" his own piece

  • Sure he could. I've seen it before with the same piece with Ames in the same auditorium, live. I guess I shouldn't say "eff up" though. Just not to the full potential of what the gospel genre is all about. I mean, the little paragraph on the front of the score suggests a lot.

  • yea but im sure he got the choir to sing it the way he wanted it, i mean a whole choir couldnt just change the way it is sung in pracitce, as far as style as a whole, to the performance night. especially at a performance like this because you only have what, one or two days rehersal as a choir. so i think it's just the way some other people percive the piece.

  • well, lhsjohnnyboy and I both know that he was the accompianist there. However, when Dr. Armstrong looked at Dr. Ames and said, "may I play?" Dr. Ames replied, "please!" afterwards, they were having a conversation about what to change and how to do it. He had his input in it, too. It was not "effed up" in any way. How dare any of you come here and insult a director of that prestige.

  • the below comment goes for you as well, sir.

  • Okay powermezzo, how dare we... because I'm sure that in all of your vocal training as a mezzo you've been taught technique when it comes to singing in german, how to slide triphthongs together in italian, and how to "sing" when it comes to your choral repertoire, but how many of your teachers respect the negro spiritual, gospel, and jazz and the style in which those types of songs are to be sung?

  • I think that Ames made Let Everything so that he could introduce that gospel style to a wider audience of people. Ames already knows what gospel is like, and so do so many others that have lived it. I'm saying that most of, if not all of the videos on youtube of that particular piece are not living up to the full vision that Ames more than likely had when writing the piece.

  • I hope he didn't write the piece with the intention of making it sound like watered down gospel, because that's what's being performed.

  • Well, I'm telling you that I was there when it happened.

I won't apologize for speaking the truth, but do not EVER criticize someone for doing something they love to do. Until you can do better you have no reason to give crticism and even then it should not be rude.

  • And you expect me to listen to you because....? I'm going to criticize regardless. Have you not seen any of the comment boards of the youtube videos for "Let Everything that Hath Breath"? I'm on every single one, saying the same thing that I said here. It's purely a matter of musical interpretation and how everyone seems to totally misinterpret black music, or lack the skill to perform it correctly. That's all. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

  • Alright, well then you go and tell everyone exactly how to perform it. Okay? When you do that give me a call and I'll gladly give my teaching liscence to you.

  • Don't worry bout it, I'm already workin on that. You wanna see my abstracts? Oh okay. Thanks, now leave it alone because you are really discounting a very controversial issue in music. Maybe that license needs to be revoked.

  • I understand that it's controversial, but there is no reason to insult people for the way they interpret music. Not once in our entire spat have I insulted the way you prefer your music should be interpreted. That's what makes music so beautiful is that there are so many different ways to perform it. Every way will be beautiful in its own way. All I know is that those students in the All-State choir had fun with that piece. That's all that really matters in the end.

  • You're right.

  • And to the idiot that's going around giving all my responses a "thumbs down" you might have noticed that you "thumbs up'ed" what Mezzo said and then you "thumbs down'ed" me agreeing with her, you effin retard.
