Hey :D this recording is amazing. I wanted to ask though uhm... on the Bern DVD, is the version of this song longer? Like is the whole song on there? :)
With all the political correctness credo of some people here in this city these days, I could only imagine the furor of the protest this show may had caused outside MSG against Rael's dark brown painted face (a la blackface).
Thank God back in the 70's New York was a thriving cultural mecca that embraced all forms of art expressions.
@vivelavidarocka Spics and niggers will always find something to complaint about. Of course Gabriel is making fun of a fucking puertorican, like blacks, they're an easy target for ridicule.
1. that Peter's face isn't painted black or brown, but rather has some kind of black pattern painted over a grimy veneer (Google "Peter Gabriel" + "Lamb" for some better pictures)
2. the face paint that Peter wore on the preceding Selling England by the Pound tour (v=zr9ErxWW4bA)
Hi, I'm a 14 year old guitarist. I recently wrote and recorded a backing track and improvised to it. I filmed it and it would be cool if you guys could check it out.
I love how after one adoring fan takes a picture, another twenty do. It's like Rael's a museum oddity on tour. I can just picture all those people asking and speaking to the others in the audience, "Can, can we take a photo? He's taking one! I'm going to anyway."
*flash of camera*
Ha! Just look at the little things in the video; Really make you wonder.
awesome. i had abootleg called A Piece of the Action ,that they played "lillywhite lillith/waiting room/anyway /it "as one long song. can ya find that cause it flowed so beautifully.
T.L.L.D.O.B is a phenomenal concept album! How come there was never a complete bootleg of one the shows? did nobody bother to film a whole show? or were all of the bootlegs damaged in some way?
@Colbystrns The Lamb wasn't a big success at the time of it's release i think. They decided to promote the album live before release, thereby damaging the sales severely. Imagine never having heard the lamb, only the English whimsy of the previous albums, then seeing slippermen and giant snake-like cones running about on stage...
I think that's why no-one taped the entire thing. Sad, isn't it?
unfucking believeable! I thought there was nothing recorded video wise during these years because nothing had ever been released. Thanks for this tommy!! You rock, you prog.
It was maybe more dirty at the time; but seeing P.Gabriel acting a gay prostitute, is special. For that time, the quality of images is good; what a drum equipment but P.Collins had !
@Sylvain894 PG was the first more asexual and weird acting than David Bowie and before him too! PG was always very overtly sexy, but not male or female... just lewd!
I was more a fan of Phil Collins, but everyone is aware of both singers, I wonder about the large animal heads and women's dresses. That may have struck people as odd.. Seeing the Genesis performance art of Peter G. With a Flower for a hat! ...surrounding his head, in makeup! Phil was just more straight forward with his stage persona
Since Tommygun's video's I became a great fan of Genesis (yes after all those years!). Especialy the liverecordings (and film) which are NOT remasterd or re-whatever. Just the original liverecoring. @hadimassa100 Sorry for confusion, NYC here is on the Bern DVD which is part of Shrine 3-disc 2CD/DVD set. In The Cage clip is on Six Hours Live 2DVD set. In the Cage, Lamia, & Slipperman clips are on a compilation DVD I have of 8mm Lamb footage - email me

@oapez yes,it is the MASTER Peter Gabriel! The REAL Genesis front man. It's so funny to me when I hear ppl ask,PG was in Genesis? LOL, really, He was what made them so special. Yes, I am bitter b/c he refuses to do a tour with the guys. I feel that for people like my mom, who has LOVED them since the beginning, he kinda owes it to them for one more tour! She saw them in LA in 74(?) ish, and I am so jealous! She took me to see them in 78,but of course PG was gone by then, I was 2! My 1st concert!
You people must understand that this is not mainstream rock, it's progressive. Most misunderstand this music and thus created the now broken band. The masses forced these individuals to seek out pop music for money. Steve Hackett remains the only true progressive rock artist left form this band. See his versions of music and remakes of Genesis for amazing creativity in progressive rock!
Peter Gabriel has now been a solo artist three times longer than he was frontman with Genesis. He is absolutely correct in his decision to not even entertain the thought of any proposed reunion. Cherish the memories.
you know what point Id like to make, WHY will the radio stations not EVER play any of this great music? They play the same rolling stones and bob segar songs over and over again, the only time u hear genesis is w/ phil singing or Peter singing Sledgehammer. I think if they would FINALLY give the credit where its due, some more ppl could hear this and I wouldn't hear the comment "I didnt even know Peter Gabriel was in Genesis" DUH.
The Rolling Stones are SOOOOO god damn overrated, Don't get me wrong, they're great, but there were people back in those days that did music with MUCH more imagination than the rolling stones or bob dylan. I feel that sometimes the music was for those artists just an excuse for the lyrics and it should be the other way around. Music comes first, and that's what I feel when I listen to Genesis, Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes or ELP.
THIS is why YOUTUBE and vids like this MUST exist! I'm a Hackett freak myself but I always wondered what Rutherford used the 6 string bass part on. This vid answers a "musician question" of more than 25 years! Creativity at its finest!
Is that what your dad told you?Peter wanted out, because the guys were all jealous of him,and being idiots. But he stayed until the end of the 75 tour,to end it amicably.
The only way I can think of,that your Dad missed a concert,is he had tickets, and the show was cancelled.Like in Wisconsin,or Minnesota. They did have shows on the tour cancelled, because nobody had heard the album yet,and ticket sales were low.Not because of Peter.Check out the VH1 special.Peter explains everything. The "boys" all fess up on it,too.
Finally Genesis will be inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 2010!!!! Don't expect a reunion like in 1982 my friends because Mr.Phil Collins is done drumming, do
@mooners40 Yes, It is disappointing about Phil not being able to play!
Not just that but Peter Gabriel won't be at the awards ,as he is busy with some shows in London. Figures anyway he always seems to be busy when it comes to Genesis.
Early Genesis was astounding. I saw them many times in Cleveland, Ohio. No words to explain it. This tour was and still is the most astounding I ever saw. Nothing else has compared to it, and I quite prefer totally other types of things now. Greetings from France.
gabriel and collins both amazing in their own right..I feel live some of the gabriel songs sung by phil are completely interchangeable between them. BUT their are some songs that phil lacks the malice in his voice to emulate peter's.
I've got absolutely nothing against Collins, but I think he just wouldn't be able to pull most songs from the 'Lamb' off in concert. Gabriel is sooo emotional and it works, even though it's drastically different to the album version.
Well I don't mean video wise. I have a lot of bootlegs of Gabriel Genesis and I find I enjoy Collins singing more. Not to say i don't enjoy Gabriel, I do, he is wonderful.
I was there at the reunion gig. Simply fantastic. Got there just in time to miss John Martyn. Remember the coffin and the energy Gabriel put into it. SO want a video of that gig.
Did anyone see the Gabriel/ Genesis reunion gig in 1982? I was there (aged 15!) and they opened with this, Gabriel came on in a coffin! Would love to see some footage, if anyone has it
I went age 17. Got their just in time to miss the brilliant John Martyn. I remember Supper Ready. It was a magical gig. Gabriel was just in a class of his own wasnt he?
Mine too. After listening this album maybe one million times, this song, The Lamia and Riding the Scree are the ones that still can deliver some type of new emotion every time I listen to them.
If those are you three favourite songs, then I dub thee "way cool"! Back In NYC is my fave also, along with Riding The Scree and Fly On A Windshield. I saw this show live, in 1975 and subsequently listened to the album x number of times, where x is less than 1 million but more than when all the grooves wore out.
I can't help myself but to feel jealous. This is my fav band (one of three) and the 1st time I had the oportunity or old enough to go and see them, was with the Invisible Touch tour. I know a totally different act. So I just saw the good stuff live when they played those unfamous "10 minutes medleys" . Btw I read Hackett is recording a new album and Squire is collaborating in it.
Thank you so much for this! One of my favorite songs, and I finally get to see it being performed. Contrary to many disgruntled parents' opinions, Youtube is not the devil. And I definitely don't think Mr. Gabriel was tripping on acid. Interesting people don't need to be stimulated by drugs.
Love when he explodes the bottle--I saw The Musical Box perform "The Lamb" here in LA a few years back but can't remember if the singer did the exploding bottle...it was still awesome, but nothing beats seeing Gabriel do it. Super-rare footage, here. Amazing.
difficult to see a reunion with peter and steve, the most productive fans (in terms of financial support) came after the departure of them both, and i couldn't imagine something more horrible than PG singin invisible touch or hackett playing abacab hahahahahaha that my friend is hallucinating
I think it's astounding Gabriel has never looked back at this part of his career- has NEVER played a single Genesis song in concert-NEVER done a song even remotely like this.
I attended his initial solo concerts in the 70s and he performed two Genesis songs as I recall - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Back In NYC - during which he donned the leather jacket and jumped on top of a grand piano. The audience ( mainly Genesis fans ) went absolutely bananas.
Ohhhhh boy! NYC was the opening song to the Peter Gabriel/Genesis Womad concert at Milton Keynes UK in '82. I was 3 rows from the stage. Gabriel was brought on in a coffin to the sound of a bass drum heart beat. The lid opened and he emerged to an ecstatic crowd, and burst into Back in NYC. I disolved in tears!! F***ing AWESUM!!
About the song in general (not this video): Although I read about this song and how great it is on Prog, Genesis etc forums by fans, I have only ever known one other person to understand it anything like I do in the sense that it must be the very best piece of music ever made. It tears apart all preconceptions of prog music and is olso the epitome of the term
goose-bumps, goose-bumps, goose-bumps !! The 25 mins the guy showed, were they included on the ´collage´ concert footage of the whole show or is this some new film ??? thanks for posting.
I always knoew, someone, somewhere, had to have filmed the Lamb. Finally, I get to see some great footage, not that grainy 8mm stuff that's been around for years. Let's hope this guy releases the rest. Thanks for posting this clip.
Some guy showed the whole 25 min video at a Genesis fans convention in Italy. He only allowed this clip to go public. The rest he took back home with him, which is cool. It's his footage. If I were him I'd negotiate a price with Genesis themselves to use on the 1970-1975 DVD/SACD box set if they wanted.

But on the other hand, doesn't Gabriel's portrayal of a Puertorican makes it a bit like a caricature with that painted face?
He really could had used several other stage props to characterize Rael, but he chose a painted face?
BTW I'm not been touchy, since my ancestry isn't black nor puertorican. (Spaniard-Argentinean)

Peter's vocals in this song are delivered so beautifully and with so much emotion. I can't get enough of this song or album for that matter.
mdornbos27 3 years ago
I love the atmosphere on this song, and this album. This was my favorite song on the album.
fogdelune 3 years ago 2
Mine too. After listening this album maybe one million times, this song, The Lamia and Riding the Scree are the ones that still can deliver some type of new emotion every time I listen to them.
vivelavidarocka 3 years ago

I think mine too but I also adore carpet crawlers

Wow...shivers up the spine!
I've seen Peter on tour a few times, always great. Genesis too, but Genesis with Peter was before my time.
See my Tony Levin Band video ;)

genesis's music are so good and inspired!! I use to hear him in the 70's for hours and now it's good to remember

Holy shit how is the audio SO good and the video SO bad?

Because you didn't read the information on this video.

Love when he explodes the bottle--I saw The Musical Box perform "The Lamb" here in LA a few years back but can't remember if the singer did the exploding bottle...it was still awesome, but nothing beats seeing Gabriel do it. Super-rare footage, here. Amazing.

he was trippin w/o acid. i think,.

difficult to see a reunion with peter and steve, the most productive fans (in terms of financial support) came after the departure of them both, and i couldn't imagine something more horrible than PG singin invisible touch or hackett playing abacab hahahahahaha that my friend is hallucinating

I think it's astounding Gabriel has never looked back at this part of his career- has NEVER played a single Genesis song in concert-NEVER done a song even remotely like this.

Me too, I just saw it, and man!!.... Even the Album's version is better than this one....
vivelavidarocka 3 years ago
Wrong. I have video footage of him playing The Lamb (title track) in a show from his 2nd tour.
moondogf 3 years ago
That's wrong. He played Lamb and Back in NYC during his early solo career.
thadkirk 3 years ago
I have seen him play back in ny city in chicago on his first solo tour ..and it was awesome
tttbne 3 years ago
Wrong.
Great days.

Thank you for posting this.

Freaking awesome... I was lead to this song by way of Jeff Buckley who did a decent cover, but this is wicked!

I'm staggered! Footage of this quality is SO rare and proves that Gabriel is/was a genius.

unbelievable!
proves that petes genesis is a like a mythological creature! he was to genesis what waters was to floyd - wish they hadnt split-
wish this stuff was
sujaul1971 4 years ago
I'd say he's more like what Syd Barrett was to Pink Floyd although Waters is/was amazing Peter is surely the Syd of the band....except not on drugs.

I always knoew, someone, somewhere, had to have filmed the Lamb. Finally, I get to see some great footage, not that grainy 8mm stuff that's been around for years. Let's hope this guy releases the rest. Thanks for posting this clip.

jabs1960 4 years ago
Some guy showed the whole 25 min video at a Genesis fans convention in Italy. He only allowed this clip to go public. The rest he took back home with him, which is cool. It's his footage. If I were him I'd negotiate a price with Genesis themselves to use on the 1970-1975 DVD/SACD box set if they wanted.
