Doc wasn't a junkie. He was an alcoholic (ok, so an alcohol junkie). He died of cirrhosis of the liver waiting for a transplant. He also spent the later part of his life helping people as a drug counselor. If nothing else, the man was a true original, and a hell of a pitcher. RIP Doc...
Sad?? The man is a total original and worthy of nothing but respect. I remember watching him on TVwith the curlers in his hair when I was 10 years old. Even then I knew he was one dude who didn't give a fuck. Yet, he achieved total excellence. He's the Hunter Thompson of sports. Hunter once wrote, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Dock sure as hell did that.
I agree with rmorte62. and on top of that, Dock is now remembered by many people just as "the guy who pitched a no-hitter on drugs," which doesn't really do the man justice. He did a lot of charity and good-will work: Worked at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to rehabilitate black prisoners, helped start the Black Athletes Foundation for Sickle Cell Research, and served as the coordinator of an anti-drug program in Los Angeles. And he tripped balls and pitch a no hitter!

Doc wasn't a junkie. He was an alcoholic (ok, so an alcohol junkie). He died of cirrhosis of the liver waiting for a transplant. He also spent the later part of his life helping people as a drug counselor. If nothing else, the man was a true original, and a hell of a pitcher. RIP Doc...
By the way, the video is fantastic!

Sad?? The man is a total original and worthy of nothing but respect. I remember watching him on TVwith the curlers in his hair when I was 10 years old. Even then I knew he was one dude who didn't give a fuck. Yet, he achieved total excellence. He's the Hunter Thompson of sports. Hunter once wrote, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Dock sure as hell did that.

I agree with rmorte62. and on top of that, Dock is now remembered by many people just as "the guy who pitched a no-hitter on drugs," which doesn't really do the man justice. He did a lot of charity and good-will work: Worked at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to rehabilitate black prisoners, helped start the Black Athletes Foundation for Sickle Cell Research, and served as the coordinator of an anti-drug program in Los Angeles. And he tripped balls and pitch a no hitter!
