Hi! Nice playing, but the sound is not really the same... I have a maybe better patch for it in my SY99, which was done by me... if you're interested, I can send it to you. :)
great job man!!! Def need to learn this song hopefully i can figuire it out from your vid tho cuz ive found no tutorials on this song! GREAT cover tho!!! I cat wait to get started learning this!!!
@mima14031985 cool thanks man im starting to work on it right now but i dont think ill hav a vid up for a bit cuz my webcam has the worst audio quality ever! Once i get a new camera and some recording gear i will tho! btw wat synth is that? It sounds pretty nice! Im planning on getting a yamaha mo8 for my first synth right now i play a yamaha ypg635 dig piano/workstation which has some sawtooth and brass synth sounds but i cant adjust them / =
@hiian123 Don't worry it wasn't an obligation to do the video ;-) If you want do it and take all the time you need.
My synth is a Yamaha SY-77, which is a great synth, but if you want to do this type of stuff I definitely suggest to you to get an analog (if you have the money) or a decent virtual analog synth. Decent virtual analog synth are the Roland JP-8000, Alesis ION, Clavia Nord Lead, etc. You can find them of 2nd hand on eBay without spending too much (I bought my JP-8000 for about $600)
@jjr007: No preset, it's a mine simple sound. On my profile there's another video of I'll Wait, played on a Roland JP-8000. On that video there's the description on how obtain this sound. It sounds a little different because the timbric difference between the SY-77 and the JP-8000, but the root of both sounds are the same (2 sawtooth oscillators slightly detuned, fast but not immediate attack and slow decay on the filter, with a bit of resonance). It's a very classic synth brass sound
@ItCouldBeFatal Thanks for your appreciation. Unfortunately I have no time to do a tutorial, but I learned this song simply hearing at it and watching a video on youtube (which wasn't a tutorial). I learned this when I was playing since 1 and half year and I'm not a genius, so everyone with a little of dedition and patience can do it ;-)
Look closely what keys I press in the video and listen carefully, I filmed it with this angle purposely to show the keys
ed io che ti credevo specializzato per i soli doors...ottima performance...ottima anche la diteggiatura;) mi sa tanto che tu provieni dal mondo classico...altrmenti tutto ciò non si spiega.
I taken this video on 20th december 2008. And since uTube deleted it shortly after because those WMG assholes claimed a copyright issue with the Van Halen's song, I had to reload it on 29th January 2009, after explaining them that was not my intention to break any copyright but only to demonstrate my playing over a Van Halen's song.
It's a mine custom voice, if you look at mine other video of I'll Wait in the video description is explained how this sound is made (if you know synthesizers it's a very easy sound to obtain and it's the "de facto" Synth Brass standard and very classical sound). On other keyboards this type of sound is called like Synth Brass, Saw(tooth) Brass, Saw(tooth) Lead, Saw(tooth) Synth or similar. The name sawtooth is given by how the waveform of this sound looks, which is like the teeth of a saw.
I'll try to do it, but don't expect it in short times... In the meantime you can use this video to learn the song. Well it could be difficult because it isn't slowed down and explained, I know, but I filmed it from top in order to show what keys are pressed
Unfortunately I don't have enough time to do a tutorial, but look closely at the keys. I filmed the video from the top so everyone can see exactely what keys are pressed. Anyway thanks to your appreciation
Perfect playing. It's not the fact that you captured it so well, it's all the bits you do with the left hand as well that make it so perfect and true to the original, great fingers..!!!!
Hey man, thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it!
Well, learning the keyboard it's not a matter of skills. It's a matter of will and patience. If you want it, just pick a keyboard, even a cheap one, and go for it :-) Skills will come during learning, and as you proceed on your studies, you'll be satisfied with the results you achieve. Don't pretend too much from yourself at the first times, just appreciate every small step you achieve, and prepair yourself for the next. This is it ;-)
Sorry but now I haven't too much time to do a tutorial. But if you look carefully at this video you can detect what keys I'm playing. I filmed it from top in order to be easy to see the keys being played
Thanks for your comment. Well, having an OB-Xa or OB8 in my studio is my dream, but now I can't afford one of these beasts and are difficult to find... Surely if I would have this syntesizer I would make the video playing on it instead of the SY77 ;-) Probably I would also sleep with it in my bed ahuahuahau :-D
One of my favorite songs by Van Halen, I remember buying the 1984 cd just for this song. Very good job on the keyboard, kept pace with the song very well and sounded awesome!
Awesome job! I had no clue that the Yamaha SY77 could sound so good. I've been wanting to get a SY77 for awhile for it's awesome FM engine, and some choirs and what not as icing on the cake. Keep up the awesome work. I want to hear "Jump" on the SY77 now for some reason...
In my previous comment in answer to Synthartist I explained how I obtained this sound. The rompler section of SY77 it's not so good, except for pure sawtooth and squarewave oscillator samples, which you can stack and detune and use together with the filter and ADSR envelope to create a true "analog" synth patch, as I done for this video. And the SY77's frequency response behaviour does the rest ;-). I also made a patch for Jump, I'll post a short demo for you soon.
Thanks. I always thought that the SY77's choir samples sounded nice, from demos anyway. Downloaded the manual last night, looks hard to program. Always liked the sound of FM, but the programming looks hard. Looking forward to the video. =)
Yeah, the SY77 it's a bit hard to program, mainly because of the criptic described parameters in its user interface. I haven't yet explored in depth its FM section... But on the Internet there are plenty of patches to download and to experiment with, this is useful to learn, with try-and-error, how to program this beast ;-)
I keep going back and forth between the SY77 and a standard ROMpler like a Juno-D. The only "realistic" sounds I really want are choirs, a decent piano, and some ethnic percussion. I feel more inclined to the SY77 for the awesome FM engine with, by today's standards, some decent ROM sounds over a modern ROMpler with great ROM but with the limits of built-in waveforms. Ahh, the peril of the musician on a budget... Hope to see more SY77 demos. =)
Being in you I would go for the SY77. For sampled sounds you can always get a cheap MIDI expander with decent sounds or at least get a inexpensive USB-MIDI interface and some VSTs for free and having sampled sounds coming out from your PC. I know what are you doing about being a musician on budget ;-)
Hi! Many thanks man! Really appreciate your comment!
Yes actually the SY77 is a FM synth (you can say is a DX7 on steroids, it have 45 algorithms and 16 waveforms for each operator, plus resonant filter), but it's also a rompler. Actually is being used as a rompler in this video, playing the classic detuned saw wave patch (rompler only for the single saw oscillator, filter and envelopes are obviously synthesized). Interestingly in the SY77 you can also use samples to modulate the FM operators.
Hi, it's not a preset patch, I done it by myself. Check out my previous video of I'll Wait, here you can find a detailed description on how obtain that sound on a synthesizer. This is one of the most classic synth sounds, usually named like "Synth brass" or "Saw brass" or something similar, made by 2 sawtooth oscillators slightly detuned
Hi, thanks for your compliment! Really appreciated!
The sync error is in the start of the video, when the song begins. If you listen carefully you can notice that I'm slightly delayed when the keyboard part starts.
Thank you. So I'll wait (as the song ahaha) for a video with you hacking some Van Halen stuff on your SQ80 ;-). I'm curious about how it sounds, I don't know this synth
Because these b****ds WGE Copyright claims locked this video about a week ago, making me reposting it and loosing all comments and counters. I've also noticed that I'll Wait it's not a song so much searched on Youtube. Thanks for your comment anyway :-)
