Food always leaves a standing impression on you wherever you go. Especially if its in a different country where they have such different food then the US. The food you made looked interesting.
I would recommend trying a larger grocery store or even an asian market if you want to make more traditional chinese dishs you may have had.
I love asian food myself. I also think Shanghai is a place I'd like to visit. (even though I have friends in Beijing that want me to visit there more)
