The exhaust vent of the cremation chamber is up on the roof. If everything is in harmony, you shouldn't see any smoke. You'll just see heat radiating out of it. Like the asphalt on a hot summer day. Sometimes, when things aren't adjusted properly, white smoke can be seen. A corpse being cremated smells just like barbeque. I'm being serious. Any crematory operator will tell you the same.

The remains are placed in the cremation chamber, and the jets are ignited. The container or all wood casket ignites. When that's burned away, the body then ignites. The intense heat causes the muscles to contract and the corpse contorts grotesquely. If you're not prepared for that sight, it will seriously mind fuck you. The body eventually settles down after the muscles are burned away. It goes through other changes in the chamber, but you get the idea.

@ywmpg No, but my friends family owned funeral home for 32-years and I was able to see some crazy things. The cremation from beginning to end was something I wish I had never seen. In the early stages of the cremation, the sight of it is pretty shocking., especially when the body contorts and moves around from the heat like it's sill alive. That's a mind fuck I could do without.

@enigma800 Yeah. I've seen some seriously messed up stuff, various stages of decomposition, desquamation to the extreme, etc. Contorting bodies is something that isn't all that wonderful. Again - why I would choose natural decomposition.

@yeahyeahyeahblah Cremation isn't a sanitized procedure either. Once the body has been in the retort for a while and the tissues are gone, the skeleton glows red from the heat. Some of it breaks up on its own, but larger parts are smashed by crematory workers. Then once it all cools a little, the fragments are put into a pulverizer - and that is the "ash" that the family receives.

If you're OK with that, good for you. I'd prefer natural decomposition!
