  • i'm an alto in this and i just love this song.. xD

  • Wazzzup my Nigra's

  • I'm catalan and "nigra sum" is the colour of our black virgin: Montserrat. It's the most important Virgin in Catalonia and you can found it in the Montserrat's Mountain near Barcelona

  • @divinas101 my choir (Cantores in Ecclesia) went to Spain on a tour back in '05 and we sang this at Monsterrat. It was a wonderful, wonderful experience!

  • Wow, beautiful sounding alto section. Just wow.

  • DOES I SMELL NIGRA!?

  • The girls nailed it! Wait.. near the end, isn't it supposed to be "terra nostra" rather than "terrat nostra"?

  • @Tifroggie It's longer ago than I care to recall, but I remember it as "terrat nostra" from my choral days, myself. Only difference I noticed them doing from what I remember is that it sounded like they said "putationis" with both the Ts pronounced as Ts instead of the second one sounding like an S.

  • @Tifroggie I found the original text in Latin, and translated into English. Terra means "our land", and terrat means "the earth's".

Nigra sum, sed formosa, filiae Jerusalem.

Ideo dilexit me rex et introduxit me in cubiculum suum et dixit mihi:

    Surge, amica mea, et veni.

Jam hiems transiit, imber abiit, et recessit.

    Flores apparuerunt in terra nostra,

    Tempus putationis advenit

Vox turturis audita est in terra nostra.

  • Sorry but his name was, PAU.

Not Paul, nor Paolo, neither Pablo, but: Pau .. .PAU CASALS.

Please Gentlemen. A minimum of respect for the master, is required.

He had nothing to do with Ejpain. He was and felt Catalonian till the end bit of his grandious heart. and: "Catalonia is not Ejpain".

  • I'm stunned to hear that much richness in the alto voices from a high school choir - absolutely beautiful.

  • @trackstarlexi then feel free to post a vid of your group doing the piece for comparison, and may viewers afford you more courtesy than what you've shown this group. This was a lovely performance.

  • @heatherwind oh don't get your panties in a bunch. I never said this was a bad performance. And if I do find a recording of our performance, I can assure you that I will attach a video response. Let the games begin!

  • the altos killed it man! great sound!!

  • Stunning Sound.

  • great song...sang it many years ago...wonderful job

  • Our high school is doing this song and the girls are singing it as one of their women pieces. I haven't heard their entire song but I will tonight at the concert! Great job.

  • this is very good! I know when we were in choir back in the day - performing - you could always tell how good a performance was by the pause before applause. Well done.

  • This is amazing! very immpressive!

  • My choir is doing this song for UIL this year and now i get to hear what it would sound like GO ALTO'S + im a 2nd alto so alto's rock

  • The altos were AMAZING.

And the sopranos were a great support. Gosh, to think this beautiful sound comes from a high school. Absolutely impressive work for the hard work they've put in !

  • this is a piece for san dimas high's womens esemble :) and san dimas is amazing!

  • That was good.

  • These girls are amazing!

  • This is a women's piece for the Texas All State Choir this year!!! Its beautiful I am soooo excited to sing it.

  • I'm in the Texas women's choir, too! So pumped!

  • its not dramatic

    its just professional

thats what proper vowels and tones sound like

kudos girls, i sang this with my school and i enjoyed this version very much.

  • Sorry to be punny, but there must be a reason why it's called Los ALTOS High School... ALTO POWER!!!! You ALL have awesome tone, but the Alto's are so rich and dark!!! I LOVE IT! :D It's a relief to know that there are alto's out there that have the dramatic tone, and I'm not the only one (most well-developed people at my school are more of lyrical mezzo's/alto's and coloratura soprano's, and the rest aren't developed enough to be able to tell) with the tone airing on the side of dramatic. :D

  • I love this song. I belong to a childrens choir and the girls choir sang this and some other really great songs.

  • I sang this song with a college women's choir and it was one of my favorites. These girls did a wonderful job with this piece.

    Bravissimo!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH!

  • Excellent.

  • Wow. Their voices are very deep and rich! Well done.

  • I remember singing alto for this. Several years later, I still remember this song as absolutely gorgeous. Well done here!

  • the grading is differnent. At a middle school level they grade you more lenient Just because you do a song in the 8th grade and get a good score on the performance does not make you superior. You're too young to know.

  • well if your so good lets see a video of it! and i think that they sound amazing! I also sang this, we did it very well also, but you should only leave good comments. Thanks.

  • Nigra sum, sed formosa, Filie Jerusalem. Ideo dilexit me rex Et introduxit me in cubiculum suum Et dixit mihi: エルサレムの娘たちよ、 私は(日焼けして)黒いけれど、愛らしい。 それゆえに王は 私を部屋に伴って 私に言われた。 Surge, amica mea, et veni Iam hiem transit, Inber abiit et recessit, Flores apparuerunt in terra nostra. Tempus putationis advenit.
  • Precioso... y lo hacen genial

  • Absolutly Oustanding! Are you sure this is a highschool? Bravo Bravo Bravo!

  • i like how its a group of white chicks singing a song called "Nigra Sum"---I am black

  • I am black* but comely, daughters of Jerusalem, Therefore have I pleased the Lord And he hath brought me into his chamber.

(*)Nigra = 'black' or alternatively, 'swarthy'. In the Song of Songs, it is made clear that the woman who speaks these words has been working in the fields and considers herself unbecomingly tanned.

  • we sang this and then at our choir dang lux aterna and we got 1st place and scored a 99 out of 100 at our festival in san fransico!!!! yyayayaya

  • My choir is singing this and we sound amazing!

  • the altos are soo strong!

  • ya the altos are definently a killer here. great job

  • very nice for a high school...

altos seem solid but some notes are sung a bit too harsh (nigra sum ^^)

and there are a bit too much vibrato, which are sometimes not needed

overall, i like this one ^^

  • my school's freshman choir (the choir I was in) did this last year, but our new director who had just assigned the choir I'm in this year (concert) a new song that mentions that "my true love is white," he said that next time we could do Nigra Sum, which reminded me of when we sang it last year and how much fun I had with it.

You guys have such great tone and blending! Alto power + Soprano's supported presence = a VERY excellent female choral combination!

    Great job!

  • i could use more diction, but the sound is great

  • my choir is singing this right now.

  • me too.

  • KILLER ALTO'S.

    hot damn.

  • @haleyraexo7 Totally Agree.

  • Great! I ask my choir to look at it! Thanks!!!

  • Hi Mshorts. Can you please put Cuatro Baladas Amarillas from this choir on youtube again! I hope taht is possible because it is beautiful!

  • i second that request.

  • i love you guys sound....I am SOOO tired of this uptight choir sound that people are producing.....JOB WELL DONE!

  • we are doing this song in choir

on thursday we are going to

    delasal in Waterford to sing

    we leave at 9.00

and we wont be back until friday

    morning at 1.30am.

    : -)

  • that's incredible! i'm in disbelief.

  • y is it only focused on one section....?

lol freat sound... we're doing that song now.

  • hauntingly beautiful.

  • I think there's too much vibrato for that kind of song.

    anyway,it sounds good

  • Your choir had a better sound then this. I'd LOVE to hear that then. This is one of the best high school girls sound I think anyone could ever wish to find. Plus, one of my favorite pieces for female voices!

  • sounds much more mature than a highschool choir

    nice job.

  • Wow. Quite lovely singing.

  • High School? Killer Altos... wow, amazing.

  • Monteverdi's is the better setting!

  • God, this sound is divine. They must have worked long and hard to achieve this beautiful sound. Bravissima.

  • io la canto al coro polifonoko della mia città!

molto bella ma noi la facciamo + lenta! quindi teniamo di più le note! ke sono altissime!

  • altissime dove?!

  • alghero

  • Be very proud girls.

  • props.
