Carrying your guitar up higher USUALLY gives you better posture, therefore you are able to play (strum and finger) better and easier, but it can also tire your wrists, elbows, and shoulders more then if you carried your guitar lower

Most guitarists carry their guitars so low cuz they think it looks cooler, edgier and more Rock but I agree with people on here that you do that for long enough and it won't be good for your shoulders and back. This is mostly a thing in Metal and Rock, though.
