Its Hollywood and of course there going to romantacize a story its supposed to be Wellesly,MA. And yes according to a book written shortly after her death called SYLVIA PLATH METHOD AND MADNESS. Her mother was lower-middle class in a boston suburb so im confused by the story as well.
Re: the party, maybe her mom went all out for a welcome home thing, and hired extra help or something. The house looks modest and comfortable, and the colors are vibrant with a lot of foliage. It does look wealthy I guess, but it could be all the color and lighting.
Is it true that Plath sent a note to her landlord saying that she was going to commit suicide but he wasn't home? If he would have been home, he would have read the note and got to Plath in time before she died. I've heard that she didn't want the suicide to be successful...I don't know.
It's sad that a lot of people believe that she killed herself because Ted was emotionally or physically abusive. But I suppose it is too much of a coincidence to have two wive who killed themselves the same way. But at least Sylvia didn't kill her kids too not like Assia. Weird too that he kept all of Sylvia's money after death when they had began divorce proceedings but then again that was never clear, was it????
If you read "A Closer Look At Ariel", written by a woman who was Sylvia's roomate and friend, it's said that Sylvia was a great cook. I believe Sylvia's father, Otto, was a Nazi party sympathist. Sylvia certainly wasn't, but in the poem "Daddy" she expressed that the Holocaust was something that really touched her. Perhaps the way she chose to kill herself came from the fact that the Nazis gased many people?
My opinion the way Sylvia chose to off herself doesn't sound like it could be related to the Nazi's. I mean it was popular at the time to kill yourself with the oven. Maybe it just was her way of having a quick suicide that was for sure going to happen (not another attempt.) My opinion only.
I was trying to make the most of this film because it is one of the texts i chose for my english essay as representation of text and conflicting perspectives. Please take your derogatory remarks elsewhere.
I'm not trying to act clever. Whether you like it or not, I have to analyse this film and your remarks are unhelpful and unnecessary. Please run along and pick on somebody else. :)
One thing i'm having trouble with...wasnt her mother supposed to be poor, living in a little clapoerboard house...having to support the whole family cos the dad died left no life insurance etc.? Here, she lives in a mansion with servants, diamond jewellrey.. etc?
I love this film, and everyone says i remind them of Sylvia, whether thats a good thing, i don't know, but i've had a haunted past like her so can slightly relate.
this film sucks!

It's touching how she makes sure the children have food and milk so they won't starve till they discover she is dead the next morning.

@ajagiroux
she stuck her head in an oven.
do you have any idea how terrible that feels?
the only reason someone would do that is because the life that went before that act felt even worse.
she meant to do it alright. just like the first time.

I love how the colour of her clothes expressed the way in which she felt at the time.
Also, does anyone know if Plath was really often scorned for her cooking? Could it be a link to the way in which she chose to kill herself?

Oh, by the time Sylvia married Ted her Grandparents had died and left her mother with life insurance. . . .
It confused me the first time I watched this, then I read a nice article describing the timeline of her life.
