  • i thought a shoe without a sync port is reffered to as a cold shoe..........

  • Thanks so much, excellent beginner's tutorial :D

  • Great intro video! Thanks for your explanation for the rest of us.

  • Good video man! I just ordered all of this stuff and will trigger it with a 7D built in trigger and see how that works. I know I will want a wireless radio trigger next. Thanks

  • nice

  • @Simcat888 you need an attachment called the OS-1000

  • @Simcat888 hello if ever u dnt have have umbrella holder yet...try "MANFROTTO- 026 swivel umbrella adapter ( 026 is model/code i think)=) peace

  • Awesome video, thanks a million!!!!

  • your metal pice at the top of the stand is am 5/8 inch spigpot?

  • Best info, tips and demo for a Strobist beginner I've seen, thnks a lot! More?

  • Talk Aboot Canadians.

  • Dude...little bit of advise for your next tutorial...pick 1 name for each thing your showing...and leave it at that. You could chop off about 5 min of these vids if you didnt explain every word that can be used for an object.

  • nice video. I use to use a similar trigger from ebay but it wasn't too sturdy. So I switched to using the CTR-301P from ebay. I replaced the aluminum shoe with the receivers. the receivers can screw directly on the 3/4 stud on the umbrella mount.

  • do they have this for minolta or sony flashes? please reply =]

  • Thanks... really helped me! I just bought just about everything you have right there exactly. I don't know if you're supposed to put your flash so close to the umbrella like that though... saw that in another video that you shouldn't do that.

  • I think he explained that... He's using a smaller umbrella for the demonstration and it has a shorter shaft so it's not possible to move it back far enough. Probably used the small umbrella so it would fit on screen for the video.

  • You can't push your flash so close to an ambrella!!! Your photo will be unproperly illuminated. But of course your flash will be illuminated very good :)

  • Comment removed

  • how close should the flash be???...thats something i have actually been wonderig...???

  • @SurreallTV I put it like 2 or 3 feet (1/1,5/2M) of my models. (Cars.)

  • Thanks bud great tutuorial do you do photograph weddings? or portraits?

  • Please, Watch all the paint you want then. :)

  • WOW you been workin out ?

  • Hey MagikXImaging.....fuck you beeeeitch.

    *Flips you off

  • wow... you don't read much do ya?

  • I own 2 Gary Fong Lightspheres. They suck compared to umbrellas or a softbox or two for portrait lighting. They are good for 'on the run' lighting if you can bounce off a ceiling or wall and they beat the hell out of any kind of direct flash. But even then, if you know what you are doing with home made bounce cards you can do just as good as a light sphere.

  • Thanks Dave! I just started doing this off camera lighting thing, and I have the same umbrella mount that you have, with the tiny thumbscrew on the aluminum shoe. I have had my flash fall out of that (using the Gadget Infinity trigger). I managed to catch it before it hit the ground, but that scared me. Is there anyone who has a good suggestion to prevent this from happening? I'm thinking tape or something, but that's ugly. Anything more elegant?

  • Can you prepare a video illustrating the different methods to light a portrait shot?

You seem to have a great tone in your presentation, and could probably pull it off.

The set could in clude you, firing the off camera flashes using your remote triger device. Show the position of the umbrellas, and how adjusting the umbrella either its size, or distance from flash effects the finished portrait? Show shots of the overall setup from a distance, to show the background, stand placement, etc.

  • Mentioned ebay triggers, how reliable are they and how much ? Do you recommend a brand? I don't suppose they would work with Pocket wizard do they?

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to do this video! I have been really stressing over lighting for my new digital camera. Years ago I was a studio photographer (when there was film only :) and now have the time to pick it up again (family finally raised!) but digital verses film and many years in between, well, I was just lost. Watching you was a blessing and a half! Thanks, thanks, thanks!

  • Very nice video. I am about to order Umbrellas/umbrella mounts/light stands and I was wondering how that'd work with the extra added height of my Cactus V2s wireless receivers. Your video showed me that it'd be fine. I like both parts of the Off Camera Lighting videos, keep up the great work. I'm sure a lot of people already know this info, but it is very helpful to have a full video demo when starting out. I, for one, definitely appreciate the effort! Thanks.

  • thanks fro posting!

  • Question on the ebay triggers. Do they work around corners, or are they line of sight only?

  • They are RF not IR so you do not need line of sight. You can place one behind a wall and be ok. Within reason. If the wall was 1 foot thick brick/concrete you might have some problems. I hate to say it but the best thing would be to test it out. All I can say is I have had no problems in a household or office environment.

  • thanks...I went ahead and dropped my life's savings on PWs, but I will probably get a set of these for a backup...Because of what I saw here, I also purchased a lightstand kit from B&H with the umbrellas, brackets and stands...keep these great vids coming!

  • Hey, just watched the "Off Camera Flash Part 2". Loved the video, explained a lot of things for me. I am a newbie at this so it was very helpful and informative. I guess we all can't know it all like some of these other people who left comments. Thanks again for the info.

  • Well the term I used was "type of hot shoe" not hot shoe. And in mounting I referred to it is a just a shoe not hot or cold, but thanks for pointing that out...

  • Hi, can you reccomend me a umbrella/hotshoe clamp? Im from the UK and cant find one like youve used anywhere.

  • I'll leave that one up to you..

  • Great detailed vid. Studio flash photography is such a mystery until you actualy do it. This has helped me understand the items I need to buy without worrying if I am getting the wrong equipment.

  • Awesome, but... in the netherlands we cannot purchase these things. The stands are available, but even on e-bay we cannot purchase the holder for umbrella+flash.

  • Awesome work, thanks for taking the time to illustarte what, to a newbie on off-camera lighting, takes a bit of getting your head around.

    Cheers!

  • Thanks!

    Debbi

  • Another beginner question.....I have a 42 inch umbrella, but I do not know how to figure the size of the zoom I should use on my 580ex strobe.

    Thanks for any help

  • Hi, Set it on the widest setting. You want to fill the umbrella with light from the flash. I think the 580 is 24 to 105 so you would set it for 24.

  • thanks for takin the time to do this. I'm just getting started and needed to know this exact info! thanks again

  • Thanks for all the info

  • Thanks for taking the time to provide these 2 vids, very informative.

A question from a beginner; I have experimented with off camera flash a bit but would like to buy an umbrella and stand and related gear for my flash. Do you reccommend a 30" for basic all-around use (mostly portraits) or should I go with something larger or a lightbox. I'm not ready for a huge commitment of cash just yet but would like to get started.

    Thanks,

    Hank.

  • Hi Hank, Sorry for such a late reply. I think you will get more use and better results from a larger umbrella. If I use my smaller one I use it most as a hair light or a rear rim light. As a main/key light I think you will want a larger softer light source. You can get some on E-bay for a good price. Hope this helps you out.

  • Do you always use an omnibounce when firing a flash into an umbrella? I assume it's to help spread the light to fill the umbrella?

  • Hi, No I do not, only if I was to use the smaller 30" umbrella to help fill it better as it is so close to the flash head. I guess it was force of habit. I pulled out the 30" and just put on the omni with out thinking..
