@Rhet0rik The gearbox is semi-automatic. He shifts gears with the rings on the steering-wheel (pulls the red to shift up and pushing the green to shift down)
@psalmsninetyone Semi Automatic gearbox. The clutch is automatic but the driver chooses when to go up or down a gear. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
@ScotswaheyMK2 The clutch is not automatic, it´s not used in the stages except for some hairpins and in the start. When shifting the ignition stops for a millisecond, this is called "Gearcut" and have the same effect as using the clutch, but way faster.
Wow that takes a serious set of balls to take that left-hander that quick on the slide at 2:27sec with a bloody great big truck on the outside, legend!

The Fabia would have been a better car, if the Germans weren't in control of the program. A Czech run Skoda could have beaten Citroen. Now VW wants to enter the WRC, but keep Skoda in the IRC.
Alright, this may sound retarded, but how do rally drivers know when to go start the instant the light goes green? Is it on instinct or is it acquired through experience? Or like other race car drivers. Has there ever been an instant when there has been a late start?
The current Skoda team in the IRC and the S-WRC, is one of the most passionate teams in rallying today, and it's being run by the Czech's and not VW which would ruin their chances of winning. Skoda hopes to have the Fabia WRC 1.6T out by 2012.
Skoda is going to build a new Fabia WRC based on the Fabia S2000 for 2011. It will have a 1.6T engine and mr. Hrabanek said that it can be used in all FIA championships.
The Fabia S2000 could be a WRCar if Skoda decides to put in a 1.6T. However it's up to them to do it. Maybe VW wont do the WRC. In 2011, no further development of the current S2000 cars will be allowed. So it's not just no new homologations. No new cars period with the 2.0 NA engine. The new WRcars will have an aero and spoiler kit to differentiate them from the S2000 cars. The 2011 engine regulations have already been finalized according to Ford and Malcolm Wilson.
@SvenT23 All the top WRC cars are like this. The driver changes gear on the steering wheel (A bit like F1). It uses hydraulics to make the gears shift. If this system fails they then have the gear stick to enable them to change gear.
@davepop Yep, but his manual H driving is even so much more impressive. Left-hand steering, right-hand changing gear, left-foot braking and right-foot flooring it at faster, further, higher and more sideways than anyone else ...
The new 1.6T cars will have a 33 mm restrictor and the boost will be limited to 2.5bar. The new engine will have a FIA control box to make sure teams aren't cheating.
Another reason why they'll be S2000 based is that they don't have to make a special vehicle just for that engine.
Skoda isn't likely coming back to the WRC but their parent company VW is thinking about joining the WRC. VW wants more manufacturers, Monte Carlo, maybe Safari, and 12 events.
VW will likely join in 2012 and they would like to see the Monte come back. It will take VW at least 18 months to develop a rally car. It will likely be the Polo.
VW might use the current Polo not the previous gen model. The S2000 is built on the previous gen Polo. It also has to be 1.6T though it can use a S2000 chassis. VW is planning on developing one from scratch not use an existing design. Thats what Kris Nissen says. VW would like to have the Monte back in the WRC though. All new S2000 homologations after 2011 must be 1.6T, according to the FIA. Hope this helps.
The current S2000 cars will still have a 2.0L NA engine. NA is naturally aspirated. You're correct for that statement. Ford is still planning a 1.6T Fiesta for the 2011 season. All WRCars will be 1.6T for 2011. The FIA wanted cheaper WRCars and Ford and Citroen both wanted the 1.6T. That didn't stop M-Sport from making a Fiesta S2000.
there are usually choppers and cams on the side of the road plus the onboards. Sometimes there is live coverage of it on tv, but unfortunately we mostly have to do with highlights programs 30min/hr long

It has a sequential gearbox, and they can choose to use the clutch when they need it. such as when launching off the start line or disengaging it for a handbrake turn.
second part of your comment is incorrect I think. If I am not mistaken, the pulling of the handbrake disengages the clutch, therefore the driver doesn´t need to actually step on the pedal.
I have never seen an Skoda going so fast. He was an amazing pilot. I had the chance to see him in many several rallys in Cordoba, Argentina. People loved him because he always gave the 100% in all the stages..

is it just me or does colin have an odd pace note system? sometimes i hear 6 and it he takes it like a 4/5. Granted it does so minus but it'd be better to use 5+ or 4+ rather than 6- looking at some of those corners.
It's realitive. Losely based on gear but more realitive speed. 6, I can accelerate, 5 maintain this pace, 4 needs attention, 3 Slow down, 2 major braking etc: That's why he has so many 6's in the tight stuff, becuase he's intending on going faster. lol. But to Colin all corners are 6's aren't they?
if you put attention there are notes like "6+ breaking and 4 right long" so, it not means that he can accelerate, it only mean the grade of the curve.
same notes as was used in scoby and ford that had 6 speed box and rather than change notes he had used for years still stuck with them. It is murray grearson an old head from the scottish championship that dose his gravel notes.
he use the system of pace notes basicly known as "Degrees notes" that means that a 6 curve is the fastest and 1 curve is the slowest curve. I use the same in my notes and is very easy to pass from any car to any other, cause you are not speaking about the speed of the car, or the intense of the breaking, you are just telling the grade of the curve.
you have many combinatios, like 1+, 4-, 5+ etc.. so you have like this -1 1 +1, -2 2 +2, etc..
I think from octavia was a big step into Fabia, but the car was developed wrongly.Just before Auriol could do something,he was dropped out(despite another year contract)and who came in to replace?Fucking Armin Schwarz, who really had no idea how to set this car up.he was known as a "Mr. Hard Setup",his setups were always hard. That is also why Paasonen and Tuohino(who did well several times drivig for Ford)suddenly dropped their performances - they had no chance to setup the car.Once the mechanics
