I have a question. There is a constant debate regarding thrusting during take off. I hear some pilots say that you have to pull the thrust all the way during take off while others say that you don't have to, that it depends on the situations. what's your say about this?
Thank you for this interesting video! I know there is a lot of paperwork in the cockpit, but don't you just go through some of these in the briefing room?
@n310ea Maybe about 40% of that amount. Still need the Flight Plan, Takeoff Data, Weather and Notams (warning messages about inop navigation and facilities).
Ah. The De Havilland Twin Otter. Years ago,I was young 15,I knew some folks at Air New England and got to fly, right seat, a Twin Otter being repositioned from Boston to Hyannis. What a easy well behaved machine. I thought I could land that craft on a dime. Departed from,I still remember, runway 4 Left to Hyannis runway 24.I wanted next to get a chance at Air New England's bigger craft Fh-227 Fairchild. It was a good airline, but lost to the new de-regulations then. :(
Any chance an interested passenger - like me - could ever request to keep the documents in the trash-bag, it'd be better to give it to someone who will at least use it/learn from it than just throw it away. (soon to get my PPL through to ATPL, ambitions to become a Commercial Pilot)

@THEMAMABOY101 My guess is that this guy is a complete idiot who clearly has not the slightest of clue's about aviation. This video isn't aimed at total retards like yourself, go watch some more videos of people falling off skateboards...'Jackass'.
That's a lot of paperwork... so archaic! I can't wait for the NextGen and complete paperless cockpit. I can't believe millions of dollars airplane for billion dollars companies can't invest some bucks for great avionics with Navigation, approaches, WX radar, Checklist and so on... So much that would avoid useless paper...
@SpidMovie Everything you said is currently implemented in the 777 A380 and other airliners of that sort but let me ask you a question. What if they fail? What if the avionics fail? I personally would like both, avionics that sort out all the paperwork and THE PAPERWORK just in case :)
@999lifegoes Sure, just in case... but let me also ask you a question: What if engines fail? Avionics aren't different from any other major elements of a plane. Redundancy, backup, etc... If all avionics fail in today's planes, I guess you should be more worry about the emergency situation than just not having the approach chart on your panel but on your EFB, or even worst, having to use the paperwork. I just believe paperwork is just archaic, non-efficient and not ecologic.
@DiamondPilotDan In the 757 and 767 we use an HF radio, that horrible, static filled, WWII era technology that can't be replaced soon enough. The 777 has CPDLC, or Controller Pilot Data Link Communications, which are essentially like sending a text message to ATC. We've done trials with CPDLC on the 757 years ago in Miami Center airspace, but those have concluded. We're told that someday soon we'll be back doing CPDLC on the 757 and 767. Across the Atlantic, we only give position reports every..
@fly4fun Oh come on, HF isn't that bad! I listen to the NAT's all the time! I bet you guys can't wait until SATCOM or CPDLC, though! I bet SELCAL is your best friend! Keep up the great videos, I really enjoy them!
@DiamondPilotDan ... ten degrees longitude (at 50 West, 40 West, 30 West and 20 West, or approximately 45 minutes to an hour apart. These position reports have our current position and time, altitude, next position and time and the position after that. We also include our fuel remaining, which gets passed along to the company.
It looks like it almost a pound of paperwork; have they calculated the FUEL that need to FLY? I wonder does the airline charge an "excess paperwork" charge ($35/@25 if paid online)?
its just amazing to see how much work is behind EVERY single flight. Passengers come and go and they don't even realize that. Thanks for your videos! It's great that you share your knowledge for people how are interested in avation.
i would love to be stuck on long flights with guys like this. people think an 8 hour flight would be boring lol who ever thought that you'd have so much work just sitting there. pilots do a lot more than people think.. it's not all about flying, it's a tremendous amount of work. that's makin lemonade lol
can you imagine having to Retrive and gather all this Info, yourself ( pilots)
they don't. not at the Majors. upper-echelon ( hell, even at some regionals and such) the Dispatcher and a host of "other" folks compile all this paperwork
and present it to the crew for review and signing. Pilots have "Enough" work to do with just the Airplane alone, besides some other things, Like, do we even fly today? lol!
hey, this will be very helpful if yu reply,my question was do you think if i had a degree in I.T and also had a ppl after that build my flight hours up, do you think i could work for an airline?
Thanks for this detailed presentation. Much appreciated. Are you allowed/able to show some of these papers in detail? I would particularly be curious about the take-off power/speed page, as well as how the flight plan looks like, design-wise. I was lucky to get the entire papework after a Delta Air Lines TATL flight, which is great, and I would just love to compare with a sample one from American Airlines.
No, Kent didn't retire. The pilot he flew with a while back did. The FAA doesn't want Kent to post that video, not sure why he can post this one and not that retirement one. I realy wanted to see the retirement one :(
@T08Ruby I was politely asked to pull Frank's retirement video, so I complied. I'm working on getting the proper permission to bring it back, since it was filmed entirely during the non-sterile period.

Yeah, I know. You're right! We should have a system for that. I wonder if there's a system for recycling the leftover newspapers as well. I've heard of at least one pilot taking it with him to recycle, interestingly enough.
Kent, have you guys at AA transitioned to the all glass cockpit yet in the 757s? when I went out to the flight academy a while back that was being planned and the sims hadn't yet been replaced.
I love your vids, and I made one heck of a discovery. You my friend, are in the famous "pilots life" video with all the American airlines pilots. I noticed you at 4:04 in the vid. Not sure if you made the video, or if its just a coincidence.
I uploaded it to YouTube in February of '06. The video was originally called "Pilot's eye view of a three day trip" (google that). YouTube pulled it off due to the U2 song.
Others have uploaded it under the "Pilot Life" name. Do a search on Vimeo for Pilot's eye view of a three day trip to see a higher resolution version.
AA has used it in their training department as an introduction video in 2008.
Could you keep some of these papers and publicate to us just to let us know how it look like? Or maybe for simmers who wants to make this route could do this with a little bit more of realism? That would be great !
Excelent video, by the way...screw the trees, let's fly! lol just kidding, of course...
More videos this detailed would be great, no matter how many cockpit dvds, youtube videos, flightsims I see there is always something else that hasn't had time to be covered!
Some of our 757s and 767s have the headrest. It's definitely nice to have.
The FAA has been frowning on cockpit videos shot during the sterile period (below 10,000 feet) so I'm limiting myself to video only during the non-sterile moments.
It's great to get an insider's look at some of the ops and regulatory procedures airline pilots are required to attend. It ain't all "stick-n-rudder".
Good question. The captain reviews it all. Maybe 20% of it has already been seen, so that can be skimmed over.
And as an example, you don't need to study the winds at every altitude before the flight, but when deciding whether or not to climb, it's nice to have that information later.
I tried really hard to keep the video short. I could have made it really boring with all the details of the paperwork. This gives a good overview.
Maybe I'll do a video or post on the flight plan only.
Kent, I meant neither to criticize the length or pace of this video, nor even to suggest a longer one. I meant only that I personally could spend literally hours and hours quietly studying one of those packets--quite contentedly so. I may have to do some dumpster diving at my local airport to see if I can find a discarded packet. (kidding!)
I just love little inside 'peeks' like this one, and I could also spend hours just looking at videos like this one. So please keep uploading as detailed as possible videos of the inside life of the cockpit.
Man this is awesome, my instructors have always told me that once your in the airlines they provide you with all the information you need for a flight. But i didnt think it would be so much lol.... is it the same for domestic flights?
I wish i my school would do that for us when we go on a cross country lol j/k
That sure is one hell of a lot of paperwork! For each and every flight! But I guess you guys never have a problem with that, its just another day in the office ;)
I've had a hard time keeping up with emails in between blogging and posting videos. Try me again or submit it as a question for "Plane Answers" at Gadling.
Great video, might be a lot but some critical information!

Im only 15, but its definately what i want to do after i leave college!
Criscocheeseman200 2 years ago 3
You need to have 3 hours per year as pilot in command in order to keep your PPL current

Great video!!!
You gotta admit thought, you've got a pretty cool office!
Criscocheeseman200 2 years ago 2
Could you keep some of these papers and publicate to us just to let us know how it look like? Or maybe for simmers who wants to make this route could do this with a little bit more of realism? That would be great !
Excelent video, by the way...screw the trees, let's fly! lol just kidding, of course...

How was London?! (I'm from there)
More videos this detailed would be great, no matter how many cockpit dvds, youtube videos, flightsims I see there is always something else that hasn't had time to be covered!

Very interesting video - thanks! :) Isn't the lack of headrests a bit of annoyance? And any chance of any approach and landing videos into London?
spitfir3ace 2 years ago
Some of our 757s and 767s have the headrest. It's definitely nice to have.
The FAA has been frowning on cockpit videos shot during the sterile period (below 10,000 feet) so I'm limiting myself to video only during the non-sterile moments.
Thanks.

Great video Kent! Looking up to you, my dream is to become an airline pilot!
EmiloZ738 2 years ago
It's great to get an insider's look at some of the ops and regulatory procedures airline pilots are required to attend. It ain't all "stick-n-rudder".
Thanks Kent!

Very interesting, Kent. I figured there'd be a lot of paperwork for a flight, but...sheesh!
Of course, now you've merely wet my whistle... my inner nerd (and the outer one) is dying to examine one of those packets up close and in detail.
What percentage of all that ink actually casts an image on a crewmember's retina before being relegated to the trash bag?
fdesmet2nerds 2 years ago
Good question. The captain reviews it all. Maybe 20% of it has already been seen, so that can be skimmed over.
And as an example, you don't need to study the winds at every altitude before the flight, but when deciding whether or not to climb, it's nice to have that information later.
I tried really hard to keep the video short. I could have made it really boring with all the details of the paperwork. This gives a good overview.
Maybe I'll do a video or post on the flight plan only.
fly4fun 2 years ago
Kent, I meant neither to criticize the length or pace of this video, nor even to suggest a longer one. I meant only that I personally could spend literally hours and hours quietly studying one of those packets--quite contentedly so. I may have to do some dumpster diving at my local airport to see if I can find a discarded packet. (kidding!)

fd, I was thinking of you when I thought of just how detailed I could make it. Everyone else would probably fall asleep!
fly4fun 2 years ago
I just love little inside 'peeks' like this one, and I could also spend hours just looking at videos like this one. So please keep uploading as detailed as possible videos of the inside life of the cockpit.

lol he looked how many pieces of paper to go and said "Jesus" haha

Man this is awesome, my instructors have always told me that once your in the airlines they provide you with all the information you need for a flight. But i didnt think it would be so much lol.... is it the same for domestic flights?
I wish i my school would do that for us when we go on a cross country lol j/k

It's quite interesting how paper is so importaint in flight even though modern airliners are all computerized and equipped with large LCD screens.
I think the only airliner (so far) that has an LCD screen specifically for the paperwork shown in this video is the A380.
Awsome video btw. Thanks for sharing!

I've had a hard time keeping up with emails in between blogging and posting videos. Try me again or submit it as a question for "Plane Answers" at Gadling.
