I understand the point that you are trying to get across but I feel as though at the same time you it's coming across as judgmental. We shouldn't be criticizing others, instead we should be loving as Christ does.
Does 15 years of being a missionary and only seeing family ONCE a year count? I sure hope so. If it doesn't I don't know what does. But you absolutely right.
You are SO right! I know so many people who have "gone on mission trips" and have been fussed over and prayed over, while my family and I are taking care of the widow down the street with no support. True, it's possible for a mission trip to drastically change some one's life, but those people are very few. Thanks so much for doing this, it's really encouraging to have some one else agree and be willing to say so.
haha insulting... well the bible says a man has no honor in his own country. Going to a different country can change a persons life forever so they can become full time ministers. haha but everyone can have there wrong opinion! :)
I just got back from my 3rd trip to Kenya. I've spent about 13 months there in total. I've tried telling people what you spoke about in this video, but your explanation takes the cake!
@BAHHshimshimhae 2 Timothy 4:1-5 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
@gabiandigeddes So you do realize that you're not God, right? Don't try to be 'smart' by putting up a bible verse when it doesn't even match with my opinion.
This guy couldn't be more right! If you REALLY had a heart for missions, you would know EVERY non-Christian in your neighborhood/class/workplace/etc... , and be praying for them every day. And no, I've never been on a missions trip. Can God work through our selfishness to accomplish His will? Of course, but let's remember Who is doing the work.
I totally get where you're coming from, but saying this is dangerous. So many kids go on trips just to have fun, but in the end, if they at least reach one person for Christ, it makes it worth it.
Right … I agree that missions trips need to be connected to local partners and ministries. However, I believe that missions trips can effectively make participants lifelong supporters of missions. Being a firsthand witness of the poverty in Africa helps fuel my passion as I serve at World Vision in the United States every day.

I have never been on a missions trip, and I think going to do one or two things like see a volcano or rain forest in say, Costa Rica isn't too bad, but your main reason for being there SHOULD be to spread the word.
At first, I was a little offended by this video. And then I stepped back and realized I was offended because I've been that pretentious rich kid. I'm going on another trip in a week. Thanks for the reality check. I think I'll spend more time in prayer so that I don't come off as inconsiderate.
I heard from a missionary (Paul Washer) that nothing is more annoying to him and the natives than a bunch of spirtually superior kids with matching t-shirts getting off a bus in their foreign country. It's that time of year that I'm being hit up for missions trips by kids who don't give anyone older than them the time or day. Like you said, it's best to donate to those who actually need the support.
There is actually some truth to this. I knew a lady who went on a "missions trip" and documented the whole thing on Facebook ("Five minutes until we board our plane") She came back with a new pocketbook and some T-shirts. I do that when I go to Disney World LOL
Most kids go on short-term mission trips expecting to change the lives of the people there, but what ends up happening is the people there change the lives of the kids.
I've been on many "short-term" mission trips lasting anywhere between 2 weeks and 11 months, but all of them where when I was really young (3rd grade and before). I didn't really understand it as much as my parents did, and now that I do I want to go on one but we kind of can't.
@ToaRanen7 Although we did move to a different place because of God so we could minister to people there, and we've been there (or here) for over a year now, but it doesn't count because it's just another state in the U.S.A.
This video definitely caught me off guard and even convicted me a little. I started going on missions trips every summer since Freshman year of high school, and my intention was to go and make a difference. What ended up happening was that God radically changed me in the process. I do believe that God can use anything, though. Even a selfish kid's desire to look spiritual by going on a missions trip, because that kid was me. Now, I can't imagine doing anything else besides being a missionary.
Coming from an MK, you hit the nail on the head! What can you really do in two weeks? Lots of people don't even actually share the gospel, just "the love of Christ," which is good, but there's alot more to it than that! btw culture shock doesn't come until the 3rd week, that's when it gets tough.
I love this video! Mission trips are not bad, but some people do brag about them. I have been on several myself, but they have all been in the U.S. Going on a mission trip does not make you a good christian, but they are great experiences sometimes to get out of your area to see how other people even in the U.S. You cannot however go on a mission trip until you have first realized that your school, your home, and your church youth group is you primary mission field. :)
Yes, the idea of sending the money to help the missionaries living there is great! I grew up as an mk in Mexico and while I understand that the short term missions trip may help someone decide to become a long term missionary, people don't seem to understand that most missionaries are support dependent. If we don't get enough support, we may not be able to clothe or feed ourselves or our children or buy fuel for transportation while serving the Lord on the mission field. That hinders our work.
Love your videos - just wanna say something about this whole idea. My husband and I and our 5 kids are serving as missionaries in North China (for the last 5 years) and while I get what you'r trying to say about short term trips - I think it's also important to remember that a lot of "long term" missionaries begin with a "short term" trip. So you don't wanna throw the baby out with the bathwater. My husband even got saved ON his first mission's trip - no clue why they even let him go ;-)
I went to El Salvador in 2010 on a mission trip and this still cracked me up. I'm not gonna lie, it did feel like a vacation. It was with my best friends and youth group...and yet here in America we rarely even tell someone about Jesus. Sad truth.
Thank you!!!! People need to realize that you don't have to go any farther than your front yard to be a missionary. I am a missionary and I've only been out of my home state a few times. I train my body so that I can show the power and love of God through dance. I have been doing this for the past 9 years of my life. I have danced more places than I can even remember: nursing homes, Washington D.C., homeless cafes, fairs churches, in the middle of a parking lot! that is what a missionary is
I'm a Christian and an aspiring independent filmmaker who's trying to get off the ground and find people who are willing to give me a chance at my dream. I'm not looking for drama or hate, but if anyone would be kind enough to give this comment a Thumbs Up then check out my channel, it would literally mean the world to me.
P.S. if you like what I do, or at least would be willing to support me as I get better at filmmaking, then please sub me! Thanks guys! :)
I totally agree with what you were saying. I myself have witnessed people who go overseas for a few weeks and think they are an expert on world missions. I think this video can be used to help motivate people to be, "Missionaries" while at home. There are plenty of kids at school and in your neighborhood who need to hear about Jesus Christ and how he can take away the punishment for our sins. I still think that God can call you to short term missions, and good things can come from those trips.
However, there are people who actually go on missions trips to become truly humbled by what they see. I'm going to Haiti this summer on a missions trip, and believe me, there is no vacation in Haiti. I don't want to be looked at as a super Christian, but I do want to have at least one missions trip experience.
I use to be a missionary to Costa Rica for 5 years, when people at my school go on missions trips all they ever talk about when they get back is the drama that happened there. It's refreshing to see im not the only one who is annoyed in the lack of seeing how blessed we are.
Haha, I understand what he's saying. But there are the people who actually are going to help, not just take pictures and flaunt it in everyone's faces. I have been on a mission trip with a group called Mission Firefly that my uncle created. We take about 30 people on 3-4 different trips a year. But most of us just truly love helping the people there.
Actually when I came back from living six Ukraine, no one really cared. Which was mostly fine because I didn't do it to look all cool and spiritual. It's true. Americans like to think that going on a missions trip is going to make a huge difference in the people, but if it makes any difference It's typically for the Americans themselves. Most people have no idea what it is like to be a real missionary, but they act like they do. It's good for Americans to get cultured though.
Are some of you even listening to what he's saying or are you just picking out what you don't like and ignoring everything else? He didn't condemn mission trips, missionaries or people who KNOW that God has called them to the field, he's talking to those who are looking for a vacation and masking it up, calling it a mission trip. They're meant to help other people foremost. When we let ourselves get in the way, it can deter our sharing of Christ to people who need Him. God will have his way.
@MrCarterHarrison He's not criticising mission trips, he's questioning the motives of kids who go on them. God is just as real and just as present in your community as he is in the remote parts of Africa. If he calls you to a third world country, rejoice. If he tells you to stay put and deal with your home life first, rejoice. God is sovereign and He is omnipresent. His will should be done every day, not just on a two week mission trip!
@MrCarterHarrison ...er, where are you from? You understand sarcasm, right? You understand the device of pretending to have someone else's opinion in order to show the flaws in it, right? And actually, he has a good point. After I've been studying Japanese culture and the Japanese language for years, I found a youth group who decided to go to Japan for a mission trip. When they explained to me their strategy I tried to explain to them why culturally the Japanese people wouldn't
@ctemomo be able to understand. Yet they stubbornly refused to listen to any advice I had for them, someone who even had good Japanese friends. Like the last 30 seconds of this video shows, they undoubtedly ended up doing more harm than good... because to them, mission trips were more about them and having the experience of "doing God's will", than about the people they wanted to minister to.
I pretty much totally agree here. I hate it when I see a new photo album on facebook called "Mexico mission trip 2010" or whatever, and it has NOTHING but pictures of 30 people hanging out by the pool at the 4 star resort they stayed at while they were there.
the people who go on missions trips HAVE just come back from a spiritual experience, one that may have changed their lives. So please don't hate on them for proclaiming it! They're still on that spiritual high, and sure, it sounds douchy when they talk about how spiritual it was, and how they're more spiritual now, but it could be true, and that ought to be celebrated.
I know firsthand that kids do go on these trips for the wrong reasons. I was one of them. The first real missions trip I went on I only went to be with my friends and for the travel experience, and to cover up for the fact that my spiritual life had been going downhill. In fact, before I went I was hoping to NOT find God there. But thank God I went. If I hadn't gone on that trip, I would probably have abandoned my faith.
I went on a mission trip when I was 13 (the only person under 20 that went) - with a legitimate non-profit that went to equip local NATIVE missionaries with new tools and train them to use them. And guess what - we all paid our own way and worked our butts off while we were there! Remarkable, isn't it? And I have a single roll of film from that trip. I was too busy to take a million pictures.
I agree with this video - if you're going, then go to actually work. Otherwise, just send the money.
I've NEVER been on a missions trip. But that's because I've never felt called to go. Like with any kind of service, it can actually be a disservice if we do it for the wrong reason.
I'm going on a missions trip in July. And it seems like a lot of the people who are going are going for the wrong reasons. It makes me soooo super mad when people go on missions trip and use it as a vacation or a time to hang out with friends or whatever. Its a very selfish thing when people do that and, in my opinion, its very disrespectful to God.
He is sooooo right! In my youth group, Most of the kids don't even read their bibles or pray. But every year they go on the missions trip. That is VERY disrespectful and embarrassing. And some of them are scared to go on a plane but they want to go on a missions trip. How can you preach to people in a different country and not preach to people that you see every single day?
I'm an eighteen year old missionary kid in Bosnia about to head back to the States for college, and I have to say: THANK YOU! It seems to me like a lot Americans seem extremely stuck up about the mission field. A team comes for a week and it's like "Hey I'm a missionary now." But like you said, being a missionary isn't just being in a place for a day and making an impact. Tons of people here don't want to talk to newbies because they know the team will leave soon. Being an mk is no small thing.
@miraclechick15 I'm a missionary kid in Papua New Guinea, and yeah, I totally agree with you there. I love it there a thousand more times than America-sure it's 3rd world, but...its just...bettter. Not that I hate America or anything.
Too many youth go on the mission trips because its a free vacation that they can get other people to pay for. I know for a fact that my heart was not in the right place the first few "mission trips" that I went on. It wasnt until I spent my whole summer (I spent every summer for 4 years)on the mission field in Houston TX working with inner city kids that I realized what a real mission was. I agree with everything he says, because I was that kid who went on the trip as if it was spring break.
I really like this kid. More people need to challenge, and critically think about the "Christian Culture" that we have created in this country. He makes a really good point.
A FREAKING MEN, dude!!! My fam moved from Kansas (yes, people live in Kansas) to Romania to be missionaries, and I agree with you 100%!!! Lol your awesome! God bless, man :)
hahaha you crack me up so much! Christians are amazing hahaha It is quite true we do some ridiculous things in the name of God, but hey, nothing wrong with visiting a country with all your rich brothers and sisters in Christ giving out chocolate XD haha Absolutely appreciate this.
WOW... I want to meet you. I want to know what you have to say just in real life without the very loud semantics. You break it down to the truth of the matter and thank you for doing it
Amen! I couldn't have said it better. Especially your quote about being sure before saying that God told you to do something. I know a lot of people that go on missions trips just because they're friends are going. It's such a waste of money. Maybe they should donate it to missionaries in other countries or people who ARE "freaking sure" that God told them to be a light to another people group.
Thank you for this! I know some people who went to Haiti last year, and while they did some great things for the community there, all I ended up hearing about was their day spent at the beach, the games they played with the other people in their group, and the adorable animals they saw. They definitely lost their focus, which is so unfortunate.
They're going back this year, and I'd love to show them this video - maybe it'll help them remember WHY they're going.
I can totally see how this would be offensive to some. But I'm one of the poor kids who can't afford to go to other countries to help out, and there are some kids who like to talk (brag) about how awesome and holy and kind hearted they are for going on a missions trip, when a lot of people would love to (me) but can't because they can't afford an airplane ticket. I've always wanted to start a program that looks for kids with very sincere, giving hearts, that want to go on a missions trip to hel
@T3rranified The Bible tells us to boast in Christ, not in ourselves. Sometimes we take pride in ourselves, but we understand that pride is a sin. No one said Christians were perfect. It's just the opposite. We recognize that we're imperfect and need a savior because of our sin.
Why would you ever complain about a trip whose purpose is to share Christ with people who might Never hear? And I don't care if you're referring to people who who are going with the wrong motives. Read Philippians 1:17-18. We should rejoice in spreading the gospel no matter the motive. And please... Don't judge people's hearts.
He's not saying missions trips are bad, he's just saying there's better ways like witnessing to your neighborhood. Seriously. You can't talk to them for five minutes about God? And yes, you are witnessing but after that week is over you're gone. You can't help them after you leave. That's why he brought up the missionaries. They're with the people, like 24/7. So yes, missions trips can be helpful for you and others, but you can help your own community even more.
I totally relate. I think it's great for people to go on short or long term mission trips, whether it's a day or for their whole life, but I get what he's saying. I know so many people who all of a sudden go on a mission trip and feel the need to brag about it and they aren't doing it for the experience on missions, but as a vacation or way to make them look and feel better.
Really made me think about my own intentions as well.
You are WAY too sarcastic sometimes. How about if you try actually encouraging other believers who are actually going on a mission trip because they love God? How about if you try actually applauding youth groups who are reaching kids who would be killing themselves if Christian kids their age weren't reaching out to them?
@Onefleshabiding16 Hmmm are you speaking from a guilty conscience? He didn't say ANYTHING out of line. He is speaking DIRECTLY to those who display this behavior. He addressed NOT being able to judge people's hearts, and commending true intentions.
@heroslyfe I'm speaking as someone who loves God and wants to be a missionary, and wishes that he could spend just a little more of his time encouraging those people who actually want to serve God for the right reasons and are carrying it out in the right way.
@Onefleshabiding16 Because sarcasm's his thing, and what he does online. Meet him in real life and you'll see more. Don't judge someone's entire personality based on something done for humor -___-
Some of this is true, way to many people go to the field to "help" a missionary, when all they are doing is trying to glorify self. If you do want to go on a missions trip, pray and fast about it, consult your parents and your pastor, have them pray too. And if it is God's will, then GO!! Dont go into it to get something for yourself, but to give of yourself! Love is not getting, but giving! (John 3:16) Love your missionaries! They have one of the HARDEST jobs on the face of the planet! DO RIGHT
I really don't like this video. I have a heart for missions, because I went on a short term missions trip with my youth group (within the US). It showed me easy ways to share the gospel that my friends and I in turn put into practice in our neighborhood. It showed me that there is a lot of poverty in our own country that can so easily be ignored. It was the reason I am now a full time missionary raising my own money at YWAM.
He is not saying missionary trips are bad, or unimportant! He is saying those who go just to mission trips recognition not really helping anybody. Which is true!
I really like this video. I have a heart for missions, but I definitely agree that I should be serving where I am before I even think about serving somewhere else. I'm living in my mission field. Anywhere you live is your mission field - that's how the Bible calls us to live.
The only thing I can think of to add to the video is that you personally grow so much more on a mission trip than any of the people you meet - I went on one and I learned SO much more than any of the people I served.
I slightly agree with this, but there are issues with what he's saying, like my youth group sometimes goes to places like Kenya for mission trips, and I know a lot of my friends are not there for personal gain, lots of my friends that were there were not proud of the fact that they went on a mission trip, they were just happy to spread the love of Jesus, my point is that not every kid is out for recognition, if you believe that's all they want then you are being foolish
I actually really feel like God wants me to go on mission trips. I desperatley want to share the love of God with everyone I can, and I want to help people that need it. Whether it be giving them money or supplies or helping rebuild a city after a hurricane or flood. I know that I need to start where I am now in sharing Gods word and helping others, but I still want to spread it as far as possible. Also I think going on short mission trips will show you if becoming a missionary is right for you.
The missions trips I've been on have been encouraging for the missionary and the people were so happy to see us as well. We cleaned teeth that weren't getting clean in the middle of village, brought computers and set up computer labs in the middle of villages and jungles where they wouldn't have gotten done had it not been for mission trips. And I think many should experience this so one can see how spoiled we are here. They might appreciate and understand more.
His videos are clearly satiric. I agree a lot with what he says. I think a lot of the time, kids go on missions trips because they think they have to in order to be a "good Christian." Missions trips are great. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. But we have to remember Acts 1:8. Jesus said to be witnesses to Jerusalem (our hometown), Judea and Samaria (our county/state/nation), and then the whole world.
When I was younger, my youth leader took us on trips for our growth, and then we applied what we learned helping others into our lives and our communities. He made sure that we knew that going on these trips doesn't make us "good" because atheists and other religions help other people all the time. Nothing makes us good.
I know the people you're talking about, but I think you need to show a little grace to people who go on short term missions trips. I've been on a few and know that I will be a missionary long-term, but even I was hurt by this video. It's very likely that God calls many people to go on short-term trips. Are you suggesting that we're not guided by the Holy Spirit daily? Yes, some people go with messed up motives, but that doesn't mean they don't experience God there or it doesn't help them grow.
@BJHawkIx7 You're wrong. It was hurtful because I think all mission trips are good. I don't know one person who's been on a short term mission trip and it hasn't changed their life and opened up their heart toward missions. They start giving to missionaries, going on more trips, sponsoring orphans, and encouraging others to go. I don't think it's good to discourage people from going on mission trips. It wasn't hurtful because it was convicting, but because it's destructive.
@hzhafner You don't know anyone who was hurt, because you were never there long enough to get to know them. I was an MK in Zambia for 8 years, and saw dozens of teams. A few were good, a few were terrible, and most were mediocre. If a person really wants to serve, why don't they feed a hungry man instead? share Christ with a drug addict, prostitute, drunkard? Who knows, maybe talk to that atheist across the hall. You can't fake love, though I saw many people try. Youtube debates FTL. Peace and GB
I really like this video! My first mission trip was to England two years ago and it costed a lot of money, but my life has been changed by it. I know that some people go and never get anything out of it and that bothers me or when they treat it like a vacation. I am going back this next summer to the same city to continue what we started and Im planning on spending a couple years there after college. This video made me think about how I can help out in so many other ways… Your videos are great
You've painted a very forgiving and positive picture of what short-term mission trips look like from the other side. I see them as church-funded summer vacations. I saw mission teams walk all over local pastors, and hurt the ministry 100x more than they ever helped it. The $3900 each team member spent on airfare, lodging, food, sight-seeing, cameras, (oh, and two visits to the orphanage) could have fed all 47 orphans for /months/. I've seen successful mission trips, but not from America.
I was actually on the mission field with my family for six years, and as true as it is that the mission teams that came were helpful, the amount of help they did compared to the help that they could have done with the plane ticket money, well, it makes what the did look pretty small. Thanks for uploading this. :) And for all your videos. You are awesome! :D
@sequyas you're totally right. And as Christians we need to be living our life on the mission field whereever we are, where we life is our mission field. But going on the mission field for the right reasons is equally important.
Just wanted to say to those who were offended... as I am not against going on mission trips.... I didn't hear him bashing all those who go on mission trips, it was for those who desire to go for recognition and personal gain! Also thinking that you have to go oversees to a third world country to be able to serve God when we are called to start right in our own town. This does not mean that God won't call you, but it isn't for our own personal Christian status, rather done in humilty for God!
SO TRUE. and i say that as someone who is going to college to become a missionary. short term trips have their place - if it weren't for short term trips i would never have known i wanted to do missions longterm - but too many people do exactly what you portrayed.. and the missionaries who

I train my body so that I can show the power and love of God through dance. I have been doing this for the past 9 years of my life. I have danced more places than I can even remember: nursing homes, Washington D.C., homeless cafes, fairs churches, in the middle of a parking lot! that is what a missionary is

God is just as real and just as present in your community as he is in the remote parts of Africa. If he calls you to a third world country, rejoice. If he tells you to stay put and deal with your home life first, rejoice. God is sovereign and He is omnipresent. His will should be done every day, not just on a two week mission trip!

the people who go on missions trips HAVE just come back from a spiritual experience, one that may have changed their lives.

@T3rranified The Bible tells us to boast in Christ, not in ourselves. Sometimes we take pride in ourselves, but we understand that pride is a sin. No one said Christians were perfect. It's just the opposite. We recognize that we're imperfect and need a savior because of our sin.

The only thing I can think of to add to the video is that you personally grow so much more on a mission trip than any of the people you meet - I went on one and I learned SO much more than any of the people I served.

Whether it be giving them money or supplies or helping rebuild a city after a hurricane or flood. Also I think going on short mission trips will show you if becoming a missionary is right for you.

The missions trips I've been on have been encouraging for the missionary and the people were so happy to see us as well. The video is supposed to make people think. If that hurt you, maybe you needed it.
