I never understood the reason why the Kinks did not made the great (on the charts) as the Beatles and the Stones!!!! They had image, power, excelent songs, a perfomance no better nether worse than the Fab Four or th Stones... I think there was some kind of conspiration that «frammed» Ray davies and his boys...
More than the other big bands, they rebelled and constantly fought their record label, managers, and tour promoters. That helped them get banned from the US, and their momentum drained away.
The Davies brothers violently deny Page playing the solo on this or "You Really Got Me'. No one has ever claimed witnessing Page's claim. He started saying this back when was thought as Beck's replacement in the Yardbirds, and probably regrets it now.
Wheter this song was the first heavy metal or punk song, or the first garage sound is absolutely irrelevant. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the first, but it put it in the top of the charts, reaching an artistic and popularity level it never had before. The Kinks were the breakthrough of it. Period.
Fantastic. HOW garage/punk is THIS? It sounds so damned rough, and unrehearsed, and I love when Dave hits the wrong note and looks off at Ray and smiles. Fabulous. Long live the mighty Kinks. They truly do not get their due, compared with Beatles, Stones, Who. Ray WAS a genius and has one of the single greatest voices in rock history.
why did dave play C and d on the 8 and 10 taste?

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin played the original guitar solo on the studio version.
Philtration 5 years ago
Strange. I read an interview with Page sometime ago and he said he played rhythm guitar on some Kinks tracks, but not lead.

I'd rather believe the version of the Davies brothers instead of the guy who plagerized in several occassions.

Ladies and gentleman, you have just witnessed the world's first true "heavy metal" song. That was it.
I was 10 years old when this song came out and I went nuts every time I heard it.
