GET RID OF THE UNIONS. The ford f-150 was again the number one selling vehicle in america. Chevrolet 1500 was 2nd. So these companies are still selling more cars then the Japanese, theres some problem with the company. HMMM lets see its probably because UAW workers are getting paid twice what workers at toyota and other Japanese plants in America are getting paid.
just goes 2 show more truck are sold than cars. so y are we pushing 2 get higher mpg cars? how bout we get some diesels in these half tons and get 10-15 more mpg and have way better power. just a thought
Screw them. Let them burn. Apparently every problem gets solved by throwing ridiculous amounts of money at it. I say make them figure it out on their own.
i agree 2 a point. i say we shoulda let AIG collapse. think bout it. how many ppl does AIG employ? how many americans would lose their jobs if the big 3 go under? a good majority of jobs have some sort of connection wit the automotive industry. but then again when they were doin good they didnt put $ aside for hard times or hold back on raises and bonuses. all the bigshots need a paycut and yes they need 2 lower their retirement benefits. thats just my 2 cents. id like 2 here wat others think
After reading all the comments, there are a lot of American Car haters out there... but I have to give GM one thing. They do make the best V8's out there. They are very advanced, powerful and efficient. The Corvette has the only V8 I know of, that gets 28mpg. Now that's amazing for a V8 with all that power!!!
So then what would you call the overhead cam engine, which was invented in 1882? Prehistoric? Wait lemme guess, it's still "high-tech" isn't it? Uh huh.
i dont think they should get a bailout, loan maybe. yes they definetely need some new managment because 2 bil a month is ridiculous.
ford an GM have a future and can still make decent cars, chrysler on the other hand should get nothing and cease to exist. ford has euro models and a couple new cars getting good reviews GM has the volt and a lot of R&D to do, but they need to make their process waay more efficient before they get $. chrysler has nothing but the ram 300c challenger and no future
Give it to all three of them if you ask me, they need it. The economy depends on it. I will say though that they need to remove some people from power and show once they get the money that they are making improvements in quality and gas mileage. However GM,Ford,Dodge should still have a performance division open because that is a big market and money to be made. The 2010 Mustang looks prosmising, the Viper is great and the new Camaro with IRS should be good.
Bailout the heirs of indentured servents, bail out the heirs of the slaves bail out the american indians. Bail out the families of fallen soldiers, Bail out toys for tots etc will they bail them out.
wow. ignorant republicans. The bailout would help the economy. Americans would start spending money on vehicles after this recession is over with. Therefore, the big three would be able to pay back its debt. Toyota is not a high quality car company, why do you think so many of its cars are so cheap? So it is competing with GM, but not on a quality based level.
Actually, Japan does make a lot of relatively good quality cars for the dollar. Case and point Hyundai Genesis. I would rather buy a euro or japanese rather than an American if I only had $20k to spend. And it's about time Ford is bringing over the euro spec models, what dumbasses for not doind this for the past 4+ years
It is a shame for American Car makers that they are begging for money from the American tax payer. Take the Japanese car makers which are doing business in USA. They don't have a "begging Bowl" with them. Rather they are concentrating on quality and our gunning the americans .....
they should bring over their european platforms like stated. why spend all this money on producing different bodies and what not when they have better ones already made somewhere else. stupid. they should also start selling off some attets. gm should sell saturn and cadillac. i understand this may mean lay offs, but at least their other brands will live past this "carpocalype". which by the way it is NOT. its just a speedbump in the process of us being able to buy more affordable vehicles.

I work for a government agency that owns over 150 vehicles that are used for trips by various employees. The whole fleet is all "Big 3", GM cars trucks and vans, Chrysler minivans and Ford trucks. These vehicles are used by every type of driver, from careful ones to abusers, on long trips and very short ones. Last year the entire fleet racked up over 5 million miles, with only 2 breakdowns, neither major. Buy what you like, but all these posts about "crappy" American cars is just BS.
Carpocalypse? I swear that was a video game that came out in the 90's for the Sega. Also, let them die already. All of this bailout etc. doesn't mean anything if we don't want to buy their cars. I highly doubt people are going to run to the dealers to trade in their 330i for a Mustang anytime soon. It all boils down to, will they buy the cars and my guess is NO.
Just read where members of Congress have included in the 15 Billion auto bailout pay raises for federal judges and money to transit systems...whats that got to do with the Big 3?
I think people here who are saying GM should die, need to realize how big GM is. If GM dies that means no more Cheverolet, Cadillac, GMC, Pontiac, and Saab. I think that GM has to ditch some of their companies though like Buick, Hummer, and Saturn. GMC should just merge with Chevy because they are pretty much the same cars only with a different name. I say bailout Ford, and Gm. Just let Chrysler die, they are pathetic and should've died in the 70's.
ur completely right...chrysler sucks and a bailout for them would only mean more useless, ugly, and crappy cars. i think it would kinda be a shame to see saturn go now that they finally dont make the world's ugliest cars anymore...i say more small car designs from europe is what we need to boost GM and Ford. Saturn's revison and the Fiesta are good starts, i think :)
The only good thing about GM is Saab. The rest, well, can be described as complete waste of materials. And Ford should not focus on building trucks too much. They are a bane to the already bad economy,as well as the environment. Like you said, let Chrysler die.
fuck hybrids and electrics, diesel is the way to go. and fuck the bailout, i will not pay for a piece of shit worthless car manufacturer that sucks at making cars and running their business!
They shouldn't get anything..accountability. Why should someone who failed get bailed out. I know I wouldn't. But I will say that they have had some good products for some years but consumer reports and the like I think have had a concerted effort to rate some really good cars bad because they got no funding from American companies. Like anything with the 3.8L from Gm was really good, decent power, 30mpg, and that was in a heavy 4 door Buick!
Detroit's dying, but foreign firms are growing in 11 states. It's their own fault, and bad companies should die instead of being unfairly propped up to hurt the superior competition. We shouldn't make the same mistakes the UK did in the 70's, where DMC and BL went out of business anyway.
The big 3 are dinosaurs & its just time for them to die! The big 3 have been obsolete since the 70s when the first small economical cars came over from Japan & did they change then? NO! They just stayed the course & kept making their gas-guzzlers. I say let the big 3 die & take OUR money that would have bailed them out & put it into Aptera & let the big 3 workers build Apteras in the big 3 factories. Its American, it meats or exceeds all safety & its 300-1000MPG NO BS! Google it.
Why does it seem the cleaner a car is the dorkier it has to look? It looks like made-up idea from Popular Science from 10 years ago. I wonder if an odd car like that can pass crash ssafety.
Granted the Aptera looks strange but thats because its that far advanced. Aptera designed this car to meet all current safety standards & quote exceed them whenever possible. The more you look at the specs, the more the car makes logical since. Now, you put an Aptera beside a ZR1 & compare 0-60 its no surprise whos going to win but thats the point. Its not a race car its a car for every day driving, to go to school, work, grocery store etc. You just dont need a car that will do 200MPH for that.
If you were from Europe, you wouldn't say that. If you watch the latest episodes from top gear you see Richard Hammond driving the VW Blue motion, a small VW Rabbit like looking car that get 70 MPG on clean diesel. I mean VW could bring those kind of cars down here but whats the point the American public has a made up mindset of Diesel technology.
The stink and noise of diesels, and the hard starting in cold weather hurts their popularity, but the big negative in the US is the memory of those 80s cars GM put Olds motors converted to diesel in, and they ran like crap, when they did run. That scared Americans away from diesel power, except in trucks.
I have heard that ford is doing ok now they dont need help now, and chysler is owned by a company that has ties and owns othr huge companies so they really dont need money but GM Does so I think we should help them, but its our tax money so we need to tell them what to make, thier trucks are good but they need to make better cars...
As a GM fan I'm all for cutting the lineup down to only potentially good selling/top quality vehicles. However, people who think that letting them fail is a good idea are ignorant and clearly do not love cars. It would be a horrible world if all we had to chose from were a handful of brands, all with as much uniqueness as a package of jelly beans. Ditch the UAW labor/pension costs and GM and Ford are going to easily be back on top.
I'm a true GM fan, I still own my 1973 Buick Apollo, but seriously there is SO MUCH garbage out of EVERY car manufacturer, not just American. This change might be good for the industry.
If they get a bailout loan, it should require that they only continue to produce those smaller cars that get good MPG, offer more hybrids, and stop building the "look at me Ive got money" gas hogs like Hummers, Escalades, and Navigators.
nah if somebody can afford 2 buy it still make it. its not like they have these things stockpiled. they dont produce a ton of em anyway. thats just my opinion tho
Chrysler should NOT get the money, they are pathetic, they have nothing now and no good plans for cars that fit the long term in the pipeline. GM should, they have some good cars now and more in the pipeline that can work in the future, and they're really too big to let die. Ford bringing over the foreign stuff gives them A's across the board, as long as they are made to do that, AWESOME. We need to cut Chrysler out and should have done so years ago, sad excuse for cars...
they shouldnt have got the $ the 1st time they got their sorry asses bailed out. they should b sold off and never thought of again. im not much of a ford fan but they have their heads in the rite place and sell a ton of vehicles. gm as a whole has alot of brands and like ford sell alot of vehicles. and both sound like they have good plans for the future but gm needs 2 do a bit of situating the top brass. get somebody that wants 2 better the company not 1 that wonders how big his bonus check is
The most amazing thing about the Big 3 detractors is that they never account for the fact that the domestic cars could have nearly $3000 worth of added content and quality if not for legacy and current commitment costs... the domestically assembled foreign brands have no such costs, and the European and Japanese assembled cars also enjoy their respective governments footing the bill for their healthcare and pensions. Why is this fact always overlooked by the pundits?
its not an opinion, it WILL pass congress, thus making it a fact. There are much cooler things in the world of cars other than 3 CEO's who are out of touch with their customer base and who ran their companies into the ground. FACT.
Once again, this is a "fact" based on what you believe. You cannot speak for others and say that this is a bad topic to make videos about. Go watch fast lane daily if u don't like this...
They should IF the united auto workers union is disbanded and the people making the cars are payed the same level as the non union car builders....And Chysler is sold off and GM's upper management is fixed
yea it will help them keep their jobs for a littel bit longer and then the good ol planning of the big three will land them right back in the same place and they will go broke again because right now they cant make money on their own, what makes you think they will be able to make profit if we pay them? they will just use that money to live for a bit longer and when they run out of it they'll die again!
What no one is explaining is how exactly a 15 or 25 billion dollar bridge loan will allow two companies that are losing more than 2 billion per month each enough wiggle room to repair their issues, get back into the black, and then repay said bridge loan. It feels more like this "bridge loan to nowhere" is only affording GM and Chrysler a few more months to ponder their exit strategy.
its been talk for a long time. being in the euros ford. because other than the stang and shelbys, and maybe the flex, the rest of your linup is not appealing. gm. well the volts a nice concept, i want to see the execution of the finished product before i cheer for it. and the cruze better be more appealing than that cobalt. chrysler. well i dunno scrap your entire lineup excluding the viper and make nice and economical cars that people want to buy.
I think the pure eletric cars are a good start. But surley if we all moove to pure eletric cars then we are using eletric and that comes from power stations which themselves are not really that clean, so then there will be no car pollution but surley it will offset with higher pollution from power stations.
Ford seem to care about surviving more than the others. Think the others need new managers/directors.
Ford should def get the money. Others need to re-organise their key people first.
they already did get the money and and the gave them 25,000,000,000 dollors and GM and Chrsyler took it and gets 4 billon ever month and ford said that if those two go down then we will but we will not take the money
Chrysler should just die. They have nothing now, and have nothing coming. Ford and Gm should get money, as long as they are held accountable for what they do with it so this doesn't happen again. Firing the CEO's seems a little extreme, but they made mistakes, and new leadership would certainly show many people that they are going in a new direction.
big 3 should get some money but keep the government out of their board rooms!!!!! this still needs to be a free market economy and it cant be if we have congressman and women sitting in GM, Ford and Chrysler (I actually dont give a shit about chrysler) board rooms making decisions
A free market ecnomy also means that companies who are going under are left to die. If you want comunist-esq help to save them, then expect invovement. Also, I would want the government in to keep an eye on my (and your) investment. So they dont go around wasting it and come back to us in another 10 years asking for more.
true, and in most cases i am in 100% agreement but, i dont think that our economy (or the world economy) can take the hit of 3 major auto manufacturers going under. I actually wrote a paper on the 1979 Chrysler bailout against the government intervening but that was only 1 of the big 3, not all of them.
i 100% agree. if i didnt still have a payment on my duramax diesel id have a volkswagon tdi. 2 of my frinds have em and r gettin 45+ mpg and are decent loking cars. y do we use hybrid electric when electricity still has 2 b made somehow so unless we get major advance in the production of electricity i say diesel is the answer. there are several kits 2 run diesel engines on veggie oil so the pollution is cut almost in half of regular diesel. which is like 1/4 of a gas engine
I think ford stands the best chance of staying around and chrysler idk about them, everything they make is a gas burner and i think that if they get the money their gonna be back where they are soon after that. GM i think needs to get smaller and get rid of the guys who put them in their sad state, but they do have some great cars and i want them to stay around but they need a lot of change in their company. so rick wagner ur FIRED!!!!!!
I agree since the minimum Ford have to do is sell their existing Euro market cars in America to be competitive in the economy car class. The rest it seems have to spend more money to do the bare minimum, which we won't see for several years.
What pisses me off is that while they lose money, Wagner got 17 million in salary last year. Unlike back in the 50's and 60's, most of GM's top brass are not real car guys that worked their way up. Didnt Wagner come from Boeing Aircraft?
It's sad that all the suits that run the companys just care about money and they ruined they americans. I wish that someone like me was running the show cuz i'm a real car guy who would make a car people wanted and not breakdown cuz that's my name on the product. i like chrysler but i don't think they should get a bailout, it should be the big 2 GM and Ford.
I agree man. People dont realize how bad it will be if GM and Ford die, and if anyone here thinks Ford and GM should die read my previous post. Let Chrysler die though, they are pathetic.
chrysler doesn't have anything that gets good gas mileage and their electric van has a gas engine. GM has the volt coming out it's pricey and they have hybrids, flex fuel E85 and fuel cell cars that they are trying to get goin but ppl say they just have gas hogs.
I wouldn't. Do you know how many American cars are manufactured per year in Canada? If the big 3 go down, Canada's economy will take a pretty solid hit.
Senators Frank and Dodd, who run the senate finance committee, knew what was happening to the banks and mortgage companies and did nothing. They had to give the banks a bailout to save their own butts. When people making 5 bucks an hour were getting high dollar mortgages on homes they couldnt possibly keep, somebody should have done something.
ford did not take the bailout money but gm and dodge did i would never buy a gm or dodge product but i will stick to ford motor company :)

The stink and noise of diesels, and the hard starting in cold weather hurts their popularity, but the big negative in the US is the memory of those 80s cars GM put Olds motors converted to diesel in, and they ran like crap, when they did run. That scared Americans away from diesel power, except in trucks.
goobergrape2 3 years ago
Many new cars from Detroit get as good if not better mileage as same size Japanese models. The big SUVs are the guzzlers.
goobergrape2 3 years ago
My opinion is simple. Get rid of 75% of management. That should fix it.
ayengomez 3 years ago 2
I have heard that ford is doing ok now they dont need help now, and chysler is owned by a company that has ties and owns othr huge companies so they really dont need money but GM Does so I think we should help them, but its our tax money so we need to tell them what to make, thier trucks are good but they need to make better cars...
MksRPM 3 years ago
As a GM fan I'm all for cutting the lineup down to only potentially good selling/top quality vehicles. However, people who think that letting them fail is a good idea are ignorant and clearly do not love cars. It would be a horrible world if all we had to chose from were a handful of brands, all with as much uniqueness as a package of jelly beans. Ditch the UAW labor/pension costs and GM and Ford are going to easily be back on top.
OSUCherokee 3 years ago 2
Or the fail and we get (GASP) innovation.
I'm a true GM fan, I still own my 1973 Buick Apollo, but seriously there is SO MUCH garbage out of EVERY car manufacturer, not just American. This change might be good for the industry.
cougrrr 3 years ago
If they get a bailout loan, it should require that they only continue to produce those smaller cars that get good MPG, offer more hybrids, and stop building the "look at me Ive got money" gas hogs like Hummers, Escalades, and Navigators.
goobergrape2 3 years ago
nah if somebody can afford 2 buy it still make it. its not like they have these things stockpiled. they dont produce a ton of em anyway. thats just my opinion tho

All I have to say is that I'm surprised Chrysler has made it this far!
Abe4racing 3 years ago
Chrysler should NOT get the money, they are pathetic, they have nothing now and no good plans for cars that fit the long term in the pipeline. GM should, they have some good cars now and more in the pipeline that can work in the future, and they're really too big to let die. Ford bringing over the foreign stuff gives them A's across the board, as long as they are made to do that, AWESOME. We need to cut Chrysler out and should have done so years ago, sad excuse for cars...
warrj7462 3 years ago 7
they shouldnt have got the $ the 1st time they got their sorry asses bailed out. they should b sold off and never thought of again. im not much of a ford fan but they have their heads in the rite place and sell a ton of vehicles. gm as a whole has alot of brands and like ford sell alot of vehicles. and both sound like they have good plans for the future but gm needs 2 do a bit of situating the top brass. get somebody that wants 2 better the company not 1 that wonders how big his bonus check is
02lb72500HD 3 years ago
(are they going to get "their" money). i think you mean are they going to get our money.

I agree thats why they need to listen to Americans and start making better car..

Man Chrysler is a god damn joke. Their cars are shit. I don't even know what the hell they are thinking.
paulpierce21 3 years ago 6
The most amazing thing about the Big 3 detractors is that they never account for the fact that the domestic cars could have nearly $3000 worth of added content and quality if not for legacy and current commitment costs... the domestically assembled foreign brands have no such costs, and the European and Japanese assembled cars also enjoy their respective governments footing the bill for their healthcare and pensions. Why is this fact always overlooked by the pundits?
cprofomogo 3 years ago 4
Who would have said owning a car would be a poltical expersion.
MrTlTO 3 years ago
why are you wasting episodes speculating on the obvious. They WILL be bailed out. All the jobb loss would not be worth it.
demosnipe1589 3 years ago
Because its a hot topic. Just because you don't find this interesting doesn't mean that the next man has the same opinion.
paulpierce21 3 years ago
its not an opinion, it WILL pass congress, thus making it a fact. There are much cooler things in the world of cars other than 3 CEO's who are out of touch with their customer base and who ran their companies into the ground. FACT.
demosnipe1589 3 years ago
Once again, this is a "fact" based on what you believe. You cannot speak for others and say that this is a bad topic to make videos about. Go watch fast lane daily if u don't like this...
paulpierce21 3 years ago
a ass hole. go argue in some other blog room.
demosnipe1589 3 years ago
They should IF the united auto workers union is disbanded and the people making the cars are payed the same level as the non union car builders....And Chysler is sold off and GM's upper management is fixed
robm425 3 years ago 2
i think they should receive de money. this can help a lot of families..
coboisarapatanas 3 years ago
yea it will help them keep their jobs for a littel bit longer and then the good ol planning of the big three will land them right back in the same place and they will go broke again because right now they cant make money on their own, what makes you think they will be able to make profit if we pay them? they will just use that money to live for a bit longer and when they run out of it they'll die again!
flamemaster89 3 years ago
Ford and GM should survive but chryster should just keep Dodge
carcrazy599 3 years ago
What no one is explaining is how exactly a 15 or 25 billion dollar bridge loan will allow two companies that are losing more than 2 billion per month each enough wiggle room to repair their issues, get back into the black, and then repay said bridge loan. It feels more like this "bridge loan to nowhere" is only affording GM and Chrysler a few more months to ponder their exit strategy.
hvissotz 3 years ago
its been talk for a long time. being in the euros ford. because other than the stang and shelbys, and maybe the flex, the rest of your linup is not appealing. gm. well the volts a nice concept, i want to see the execution of the finished product before i cheer for it. and the cruze better be more appealing than that cobalt. chrysler. well i dunno scrap your entire lineup excluding the viper and make nice and economical cars that people want to buy.
ztunelover 3 years ago
I think the pure eletric cars are a good start. But surley if we all moove to pure eletric cars then we are using eletric and that comes from power stations which themselves are not really that clean, so then there will be no car pollution but surley it will offset with higher pollution from power stations.
Ford seem to care about surviving more than the others. Think the others need new managers/directors.
Ford should def get the money. Others need to re-organise their key people first.
JayKay3000 3 years ago
Yeah I never liked Fords to be honest but they seem to have ther feet on the ground. Credit to where its due. The others 2 just are in the hole.

why do they make the best designs for europe
because we like them
here the cars are shit
Modena230 3 years ago
they already did get the money and and the gave them 25,000,000,000 dollors and GM and Chrsyler took it and gets 4 billon ever month and ford said that if those two go down then we will but we will not take the money
221MagicMan 3 years ago
i think ford should
euro cats they are awesome compare to the american models and ford has a quick fix unlike the others
nerddna 3 years ago
Chrysler should just die. They have nothing now, and have nothing coming. Ford and Gm should get money, as long as they are held accountable for what they do with it so this doesn't happen again. Firing the CEO's seems a little extreme, but they made mistakes, and new leadership would certainly show many people that they are going in a new direction.

big 3 should get some money but keep the government out of their board rooms!!!!! this still needs to be a free market economy and it cant be if we have congressman and women sitting in GM, Ford and Chrysler (I actually dont give a shit about chrysler) board rooms making decisions
guppy8290 3 years ago
A free market ecnomy also means that companies who are going under are left to die. If you want comunist-esq help to save them, then expect invovement. Also, I would want the government in to keep an eye on my (and your) investment. So they dont go around wasting it and come back to us in another 10 years asking for more.
scotsocool 3 years ago
true, and in most cases i am in 100% agreement but, i dont think that our economy (or the world economy) can take the hit of 3 major auto manufacturers going under. I actually wrote a paper on the 1979 Chrysler bailout against the government intervening but that was only 1 of the big 3, not all of them.
guppy8290 3 years ago
I too am not jumping on the hybrid electric bandwagon. Give us performance cars running on biodiesel. WHAT'S THE HOLD UP!
LegendaryBadass 3 years ago
i 100% agree. if i didnt still have a payment on my duramax diesel id have a volkswagon tdi.
02lb72500HD 3 years ago
(1:45) who DOESN'T look for free stuff???
Nitrocide595 3 years ago
I think ford stands the best chance of staying around and chrysler idk about them, everything they make is a gas burner and i think that if they get the money their gonna be back where they are soon after that. GM i think needs to get smaller and get rid of the guys who put them in their sad state, but they do have some great cars and i want them to stay around but they need a lot of change in their company. so rick wagner ur FIRED!!!!!!
goonboat 3 years ago
I agree since the minimum Ford have to do is sell their existing Euro market cars in America to be competitive in the economy car class. The rest it seems have to spend more money to do the bare minimum, which we won't see for several years.
StaticFalconar 3 years ago
What pisses me off is that while they lose money, Wagner got 17 million in salary last year. Unlike back in the 50's and 60's, most of GM's top brass are not real car guys that worked their way up. Didnt Wagner come from Boeing Aircraft?
goobergrape2 3 years ago
It's sad that all the suits that run the companys just care about money and they ruined they americans. I wish that someone like me was running the show cuz i'm a real car guy who would make a car people wanted and not breakdown cuz that's my name on the product. i like chrysler but i don't think they should get a bailout, it should be the big 2 GM and Ford.
goonboat 3 years ago
I agree man. People dont realize how bad it will be if GM and Ford die, and if anyone here thinks Ford and GM should die read my previous post. Let Chrysler die though, they are pathetic.
Rivelution 3 years ago
chrysler doesn't have anything that gets good gas mileage and their electric van has a gas engine. GM has the volt coming out it's pricey and they have hybrids, flex fuel E85 and fuel cell cars that they are trying to get goin but ppl say they just have gas hogs.

your confusing gm's wagoner from Ford Mullaly.

I wouldn't. Do you know how many American cars are manufactured per year in Canada? If the big 3 go down, Canada's economy will take a pretty solid hit.

Very true, Ontario is practically run by the Auto industry aka the big three

Senators Frank and Dodd, who run the senate finance committee, knew what was happening to the banks and mortgage companies and did nothing. They had to give the banks a bailout to save their own butts. When people making 5 bucks an hour were getting high dollar mortgages on homes they couldnt possibly keep, somebody should have done something.

Hey I wanted to say that, it's friken true, and Wall Street had like 5% of the job loss any waz.
