My Ferret Jill LOVES playing in water like yours. But she will not go in. Gets the toys out though. If she cannot get them, she gets one of the Dogs do it for her.
That can really depend on where you're getting them from, A shelter or a pet store, or a breeder. You'll have to do that research there. Ferrets are brilliant pets as i would know ;) It's like having a Puppy for 10 years :] I'd reccommend them to anyone! Good luck :)
That's true. But initial price isn't the only thing you need to think about. Ferrets require special diets. And are considered exotic pets in some states, so not all vets may treat them. Ferrets are excellent pets, but you need to do your research if you want them to be healthy/happy... They really are like puppies/kittens their whole lives... ^w^
OH hell yes (: My little boy Dexter is a handfull but i love him to bits and wouldn't change him for anything! Plus i live in the UK and mostly all vets treat them and their not illegal ;D yay!
Thanks for the sympathies. Precious was my baby, the other two belonged to my brothers. Precious was a Sable I think, Little man had a white bib but otherwise looked like Precious, Buster was almost a DEW but had silver on his back.
I read in one of my dad's books that the perfect number of ferrets is 3... That way if one does wind up dying, the other two will still have eachother.
...
I should've taken oven as the ferrets' caretaker... In the end I was the only one who played with Little Man.
There is no way my mom would let me have 3 :P Besides my cage isn't big enough for 3 ^^ I dont wanna cram them in, Bless. It's hard enough to convince Mom to get Dex' a lil' friend. I'm 16 soon, She cannot say no! :D Mwuahaha
the females are not very hyper but can be way more than males. but dont trust anything i say because in some cases its the complete oposite!. if u buy a new ferret try to buy one from a breeder, but if you cant then just go to your local pet store. some from the petstorehave been in a lil cage for years and it takes a lot longer for them to stop bitting and to get used to u. But i sugest a breeder cause usualy there already descented. do whatever u like but as long as u get one!!!!! :)

Wow I have never before in my life witnessed such breathtaking ignorance.
Do NOT ever buy a ferret from a breeder or a pet shop. There are MANY ferrets in dire need of a home in rescue centres BECAUSE of breeders and pet shops treating them as a commodity rather than a living animal. If you buy from a breeder or a pet shop you are perpetuating the cycle of misery for the ferret - they are kept in horrific conditions and when they reach a certain age are killed.
I concur! Try to buy from a rescue, they usually adopt out ferrets as pairs, so you know they will do well with each other. You can also get them at varying ages at rescues to, but if you absolutely HAVE TO buy from a store. I suggest Petco. The 3 near me had employees specifically for small mammals. They were clean and well taken care of. Luckily a ferret rescue just opened an hour away! I will be visiting them to adopt an unpaired male soon!
you really annoy me. even the people who work at rescues arent as "breathtakingly ignorant" as you are. i think that the people running rescues would be happy that people are adopting ferrets no matter where they come from. they all need homes. i am begging you to PLEASE stop "perpetuating the cycle of misery" of the people that you are harassing on this site just because you you can use big words and therefore think you have the right to say whatever you want. just because you're articulate. FURTHERMORE descenting a ferret is called MUTILATION and leads to all sorts of crippling problems later in life.
A ferret will only use it's anal glands if it is frightened or startled. A well kept ferret should only very very rarely do this so why put the animal through such intense suffering for such a rare event? The scent will not hurt you and disperses in seconds.
People that condone the practice of descenting sicken me.
look not everyone wants their house to stink because of a ferrets "anal glands" and they dont SUFFER at all i think they would prefer not to smell themselfs either and basically your telling us to only take in ferrets from a rescue and completely forget about the ones from anywhere else ? besides if they are killed at a certain age by breeders which they are NOT shouldent that be a reason to take them away from the breeders ? anyway the breeders look after their ferrets well
you really think high of yourself dont you ? you think whatever you do is only what should be done by everyone else and if not its wrong , you have probably never met a ferret breeder and gnats are pretty intelligent actually all im sayin is that you could remove your brain and it wouldn't be big enough to spread over a small water buiscuit , relax not all animals are sad a miserable cause they dont live with you (Y)
Russycarps, not to be rude, but if everyone stopped buying ferrets from pet stores, what would become of those ferrets? And if they are well kept and healthy, what's so wrong about adopting a little buddy from there? I got mine from Petco, so does that make me such a bad person? I do agree that it's good to adopt from a shelter, but it's not such a bad thing to adopt from a pet store either if you've done your research. If someone is just giving the ferret a good home, isn't that what counts?
honestly i think that most gnats are smarter then you russycarps. ferrets are not killed at a certain age, they only live up to 6 years and usually arive at rescues close to that age. and not buying them at breeders and pet stores wont reduce the amount of ferrets in rescues. the only way to reduce the numbers of ferrets in rescues is for people to really research ferrets before they get 1. so shut the **** up
Actually, removing a ferrets scent glands will NOT stop them from smelling. It's the ferrets FUR (oils) that make it smell (a musky smell)... the scent glands ONLY release a smell when a ferret gets frightened or excited. So the all day long smell of a ferret comes from the fur... so in a way I think it's pointless and cruel to remove their scent glands.
Obviously, the males smell more than the females, but castrating them will lessen this smell. It isn't that bad anyway, u soon get used to it.
I don't agree with descenting either, but unfortunately in the U.S. public breeders have to descent unless they have a permit. My two are descented and altered, that's how they were when we got them. If you get an altered and/or descented.... take them to the vet for a check up every 2/3 months. That may be expensive..... but its a good way to catch problems early but dont use a general vet, get a small mammal specific vet. my vet owns 9 ferrets himself, and babysits mine when I need him to!
well if you find your at work to much or studying for school i recemened a boy because they more relaxed but in some cases they bite alot more .the rest is on a new comment thinggy
i have 4 questions... my parents won't let me get a ferret b/c they think they smell... are they that bad? is cleaning their cage an everyday job? and other than the cost of the ferrt(s) themselves, are they expensive? and last, if i got a ferret would it need another one to keep it company?
1) they smell very bad, and many can find it disturbing, but ive had mine for 4 years, and in the first months i got used to it and stopped smelling it.... but guests might not like it.
2) you HAVE yo clean their cage everyday, which is why many like to use litter boxes, since it is easier.
3) after buying the ferrets u only buy the cage (as big as possible) hammocks, water bottle thing and a plate for food, maybe a brush? and some toys. after that, the only thing you need is water, shampo, food
and later buy more hammocks, since they get really dirty.
4) i really think you should get two. i have two, and they are so funny. i had one and a year later i got the other one, and i noticed how they changed a lot, more fun and nice.
they need a lot of care, and it is a HUGE responsability. you need to take them out daily, play with thme, make sure they dont stay in their cage all day long, changetheir litter box... but after all ti is all worth it, i think (:
My ferret is a Female. she has a slight smell. sort of musky. Boys apparently smell worse. Also, if you get a female, she will HAVE to be desexed if you are breeding her (I do not recommend breeding for first time ferret owners.) is she is not desexed she will stay on heat and eventually die of blood loss or realted diseases. Im in Australia and my ferret cost $180 to get her desexed.
Aside from the cost, I suggest a girl. They smell less and are usually alot gentle.
However mine is quiet crazy and gets carried away.
If you do purchase a ferret, make sure you are 150% sure you want it. Maybe wait a few months to see if you still want one, go to a breeder and play with some to get a feel for it. but no matter how sure you are, you are never fully prepared for the change they will cause to your life. Worth it tho.
i once put my ferret in water in the tub only like at 1/8 pinkie hieght and he loved just swirling and turning in it i swear if ferrets stop being cute then the world will start to end

Corkoth55 3 years ago
1: depending on where you live, most ferrets would be descented and/or altered. their smell isnt THAT bad.... just don't startle them LOL
2: If not every day then every other day. Invest in at least 2 litter boxes and a multilevel cage with one at the bottom and one up higher.
3: Some small mammal only vets can be. Initial visit is usually most costly
4: get at least 2, be careful or your parents might love them... then you'll have ferret math on your hands.
