Whenever I hear this, I imagine myself riding an old Schwinn bike down a black and white neighborhood. There are classic cars going down the road, people smiling and waving at eachother, backyard BBQs...now if I can just get this time machine to work...
i hate covers, and if you make a cover, you better make sure it's better then the original. So i say, fuck The Crew Cuts for trying to rip off The Chords. The original by The Chords is WAY BETTER.
I have solid proof this is a copy of the chords. In 1950 I was in that studio with A SAXOPHONE AND THE GUYS as we wrote shboom. Thr guys are the chords.
The most successful version of this song was by The Crew Cuts; on August 7th, 1954 it reached #1 {for 7 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers chart and spent 30 weeks in the Top 100..
The original version was by te doo-wop group The Chords; in 1954 it peaked at #3 on the R&B charts and #9 on the Pop charts...
The British revivalist doo-wop group Darts' version reached #48 in the U.K. chart in 1980
The Fleetwoods release a covered version which did not make the charts
I think it would be sick to live in 50's America, driving down some sunny avenue in California in a red and chrome Cadillac Eldorado, listening to this...
dogz you aren't old fashioned. This music connects, at least in me, to a very pure source. It just allows your heart to beat with the rhythm and everything else to just play along. That is the soul of it, and of you. That is very new fashioned.
I grew up listening to this version... I have listened to 'The Chords' Verison and in my opinion this one is better... We all have different opinions and this is mine!
Lol I got this song from destroy all humans when i was 9 from the teenagers from outerspace movie.I love this song...Still Sinatra and Deano are better but the 50's would be like living in a whole different universe of patriotism fear and stability in one country! beutiful time.
I love the crew cuts!! but the chords are nice aswell!! You gotta love the crew cuts!! However the Chords shouldn't be underestimated aswell!! nonetheless...SHUT UUUUP!! WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR STUPID OPINIONS!!
Back in those days good white parents didn't want their precious little darlings listening to "black music" and the radio stations would hardly play it. Consequently, we were subjected to cover versions that didn't even come close to the fine sounds of the originals. There were some exceptions (Coasters for one) that did make it through but most didn't. Some had two going at the same time like Pat Boone's cover of Little Richard. I didn't know of the Moonglows until I went into the Navy 1960.
@buckbeach It's amazing how many covers of "race music" were made through the rock and roll era. I just learned a few months ago that Led Zep's No Bodys Fault But Mine was a cover of a black dude in the 1920's, Blind Willie Johnson,. I grew up in the 1970's and Im sure he was credited on the album but when you are banging your head to the music who looks? Lol. You Tube does all these forgotten musicians a service by showing their music on line.
I used to have this version on a 78RPM Disc, I grew up thinking THIS was the original. I loved it then, and still love it now. The Chords is good also.
I love the Crew Cuts. I grew up in that time span and the music was superb. Don't knock good music that let people in on the feelings of their hearts. It beats the so called stuff out there today. That isn't music.
Yeah, I'm older! I was 6 Years old and I heard it on BFN (British Forces Network, today BFBS - British Forces Broardcasting Service) in Germany! Greatings!
Actually, I like the Crew Cuts rendition better. When it was first introduced to be way back in 1974 (20 years after it was first recorded), it was my theme song during Middle School and High School.
I always say the original is better, this case yes I think the original is better, however I still like this version also. Still it's not as good as the original.
Same thing for most songs with a cover
Here comes the sun The Beatles nail all the covers
Stupid Cupid Connie Francis nails Mandy Moore
and even my favorite latin songs like
A Quien Le Importa Alaska y Dinarama nails thalia.
or even
You spin me right round Dead or Alive nails thalia and Flo Rida.
This version is so much better than the Chord's version, in my opinion. Everyone laughs at me when they are going through my iPod cause this is the only type of music on it, I am not even joking.
Read the note that MaddinDS put in the description... After reading the note, I have come to my conclusion: Why the hell did you post this version in the first place if you thought it was terrible? The Crew-Cuts are much better than The Chords. Mark it as another Canadian victory over Americans.

hey ben you left out a couple things that made it what it was, the best time for the working man ever, a top rate of 90% tax for the top 5%incomes, and over 65% of the jobs were union jobs, It's gone and it's never coming back. There is a cure, if people would vote for their own best interests, we'd have the government we need, but the right gets the single issue voters to come over to their side, and then they stick it in their ass, and we all pay the price.
@mn1fatcat there goes another Dem, trying to include politics in everything. Get with the times, the Right is fighting daily to get jobs back in this country. Both sides pimped our country to the world and we (the tax payers) get the honor of paying the world to screw us. @billyjohnson777 Oh hahaha I thought you were talking about the british one, sorry. My mistake.

@billyjohnson777 feel free to play the race card, but I actually prefer this version to the chords.

I feel that the transition from earlier forms of popular music to early rock-and-roll can be nicely detected in this song.

I think The Crew cuts sing this song better than The Chords if you ask me.

@Gamefan113 I totally agree with you. I'm 24 and in a Doo Wop group with three other guys in their 20's and this version is so much better than The Chords.
