great video.. fantastic to now know that Hamilton is in preservation in her streamlined form in "the days of red and gold" livery at the NRM york i recommend you go there its a great day out!
FFS! The "two" preserved Coronation class? What about 6235? City of Birmingham ring any bells? I'm in Australia for Gods sake and even I have seen her and remember her. Fix the title please mate.
@dm3830 There's "preserved" and "preserved". City of Birmingham is not in running order. I suppose you could say she's preserved in aspic. I'm also a bit mystified why you're in Australia "for God's sake". Are you a minister or something?
good old bill andrew driving duchess of sutherland and bob hart driving duchess of hamilton and i was on both of those great trips and a great day i would like to see them both back on the main line sooner than later so come on ray towell get your finger out and get duchess of hamilton back on the main line with duchess of sutherland as we both miss you very badly hurry up back
I suppose in a way I partially to blame for the re-streamlining of 6229 as I located and supplied to all two pre-war colour images of the streamlined "Coronation Scott" #6229 at the New York World's Fair of 1939 and 1940. I have been told the discovery of those images added some impetus to that pursuit of re-streamlining. Anyone care to exonerate me?
Do we think there will come the day when all 3 Coronation Classes will be seen together...DoH in her streamlined condition, DoS in LMS livery and City of Birmingham in BR Green, standing side by side!
No. 6229 really hope so. 6233 almost certainly. 6235, unlikly. As i heard it, there is almost nohing mechanical left that could possiblly work. And it is incarcerated in a museum.
Mechanically most of 46235 is there, and is as she was when withdrawn with the exception of the modifications made to fit that awful hydraulic ram that was used to push her a few feet every so often in the old Science Museum. Basically she's still worn out from BR service having not been overhauled for half a century. The problem is that her owners won't allow new parts to be made to replace the worn originals, and won't carry out the modifications needed to fit her under OHLE.
The same can be said for the A4s. Do we really need so many on the main line? DoH is out of the picture now that she's cosmetically 'restored' to a streamliner leaving just one on the main line. DoS has already had her cert extended to November, what happens when that expires and she disappears for a few years for overhaul?
I know, for the next few years we will be sadly short of Stanier pacifics. 6235 in a museum, 6229 in casing, 6233 in a workshop and 6201 going of the Main line too. Still at least Leander still has a couple of years. It just suprises me that given so few gresley machnes survive, a huge proportion are out and about. But there are so many black fives and 8fs, three jubes, three duchesses, 2 scots, 2 princesses and a mogul, and yet only a few fivs, one 8f and Leander can run on the main line.
@ZunnanDeclawed" As an American who has ridden 4498 & 46229 over the Settle and Carlisle (that is as far as she got on September 18th 1993) be aware, as the number of enthusiasts dwindles (as it must due to the progression of time) realize all mainline operations must be appreciated and patronized to the fullest possible extent. "NO THING" IS FOREVER!
Superbly put together...normally I'd add "forget the music and let the locos talk for themselves", but in this particular case the soundtrack suits to perfection.
Well done...I bet your grandad would be proud of you...

Lovely! Your Granddad would be proud! The music is great too, even though the sounds of these engines would be impressive, especially at speed!

I would prefer the sound of the engines rather than that music!

@ZunnanDeclawed Thing is, do we really need 3 duchesses out on the main line. There is only a limited amounnt of work for steam.
