@eralfia it is not firmware's prob. its hardware's. i too updated the firmware, but no use. After Nokia changed the LCD for free of cost, till date there is no prob with the phone...

i couldn't be arsed to get a replacement screen and i cant update the firmware past v3.0 for some reason, so my solution is - put opera mobile as one of the shortcuts on the homescreen, just press it when screen is scrambled after you unlock phone. When the application opens it fixes the screen, prob because it goes to an all white background as it loads....this resets the screen. I know you can't see the icon when the screen is fucked, but u soo get used to pressing it "blind"! piece of shit!!
That happens at least when the phone is in too cold place :/ It really sucks because Nokia is Finnish and they have probably tested their phones in cold but their phones aren't made in Finland anymore so they kinda suck.. Hopefully n8 is made in Finland
Do you know that Nokia 5800 is a computer. Its not a toy like some mobiles. If you turn it of from the button, or let its battery exhaust, its system will acquire serious problems, which can cause problems like this. The bitch at Nokia Care told me that their stupid engineer said my phone's screw was "openned and damaged" WTF is that? They say no matter what, they won't replace it for free. and the screw problem is the excuse they came up with. I guess the managers of the develoment department responsible for 5800 decided that the screen is too expensive for them to replace for the early adopter, which the portion of the customer pays the most!!
had two sw versions and problem continues in other words they kept the bug throuout 2 sw versions very professional also updates are normally available only in europe/usa
Don't buy a new LCD because this problem is not only display problem, i have changed the display (costs 50 euro) and after 5 day same problem appears again...:(((
@Varbala i have put the phone 3 times to the assistence and that have change the lcd and made restart all the phon. it's a problem of contact of lcd and not of lcd!!! if you take the phone with hand and push it in different part he go well!! now he go but for repair i whait 4 week.
Just download an app called Flashligt, then activate shortcuts on the homepage. use the program as one of the shortcuts, but you have to know where on the shortcuts bar youve set it, then, you can open the phone using the unlock button on the side, and the vertical lineswill appear. Then just choose flashligth on the shortcuts bar then the program will appear with no vertical lines. just click the "X" in the rigth corner and then you can use the phone as normal, just clicking up the app.

This is what i did. I downloaded the app called "flashlight" from the ovi store. Then i put it as an icon on the phones home screen. Now when the problem occurs i just go into the app and the screen goes normal. Or you could just lock the phone with this app running.
I have the same problem, but I started to read forums, and I fixed it, without changing the display or firmware. The problem started when I doing upgrade firmware to V31.0.101. Now the problem is there, but the phone can be used without problem. If you want to know how you can fix that, send me a PM.
It is a manufacturing defect. Please forward to Nokia Care & they will change the LCD free of cost.. I had the same prob & Nokia replaced the LCD, now i'm using the phone for 1 year without any probs, i lov my Nokia 5800.
@mahmoudm3 Nokia released some phones with problematic mainboard... it is not something you can fix... a friend of smine smashed 2 phones and sent them back to nokia because of these problems... take of the batery and try hard reset... good luck

LUCKILY ! it was in warranty .. just have sent it to service center, and they said they will replace the LCD display, as its a common problem... huh ! nokia's first touch screen, has severe problem !!

A friend of mine had this problem, since it was still in guarantee he gave it to Nokia Assistance and they changed the screen. Takes 4 days. It's not a common problem but not a rare one either with 5800.
for me it is not a software prob, i too had this prob after i update firmware..i tried all the possible ways, soft format, hard format, white screen etc. atlast the nokia guys changed the LCD & and prob was gone with the same firmware.
one time, i experienced that, i just restart the phone by getting the battery and placing it back again... and it comes OK, but you'll set again the date and time.,., grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe they are too dumb and don't know that all they have to do is replace the LCD display. When i had the problem i've send the phone to Nokia and they gave it back in 3 days with the new LCD.
i got my phone back after 8 days. they changed the LCD. now its working fine. So i think, without replacing the LCD there is no permanent solution for this problem.
yeah ill do it today but if 5 months after I bought it the problem appears hope it doesn´t mean that will happen again after another 5 cause then i would only have 2 warrantie months and kaput

This problem seems to be quite common. It is incredibly annoying.
I also had some joy with locking the phone then pressing the on/off power button, this sometime would "flash" the display and reset it.
However, recently even this little trick doesn't work.
I'm now sending my phone back for repair.

It is a manufacturing defect. Please forward to Nokia Care & they will change the LCD free of cost.. I had the same prob & Nokia replaced the LCD, now i'm using the phone for 1 year without any probs, i lov my Nokia 5800.

@mahmoudm3 Nokia released some phones with problematic mainboard... it is not something you can fix... a friend of smine smashed 2 phones and sent them back to nokia because of these problems... take of the batery and try hard reset... good luck

hey, i have the same problem in 5800, i tried updating latest firmware, it did not solve the problem. LUCKILY ! it was in warranty .. just have sent it to service center, and they said they will replace the LCD display, as its a common problem... huh ! nokia's first touch screen, has severe problem !!

i think its better to update to the latest firmware than your shit v11 firmware that you're using now.

the best way to fix it is... go to your settings and go on phone and then display and put your light sensor on high. that worked for me

hoy en la mañana tube el mismo problema, y al parecer fue por la humedad que existe en mi cuarto que es aproximadamente de 50%, y la temperatura que era de 17 °C, la solucion fue quitarle la bateria y dejar secar el telefono al sol.

its a common problem on 5800 phones. the same problem here and nokia center doesnt replace it here in my country (Armenia) I used to consider Nokia as a good phone but from now forget about this fkng nokia phones just buy iphone , viva Steve Jobs

press the on/off button before unlock the phone, this have to normalize the screen and actually is working for me (5800 nam v30 ).

A friend of mine had this problem, since it was still in guarantee he gave it to Nokia Assistance and they changed the screen. Takes 4 days. It's not a common problem but not a rare one either with 5800.

for me it is not a software prob, i too had this prob after i update firmware..i tried all the possible ways, soft format, hard format, white screen etc. atlast the nokia guys changed the LCD & and prob was gone with the same firmware.

one time, i experienced that, i just restart the phone by getting the battery and placing it back again... and it comes OK, but you'll set again the date and time.,., grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe they are too dumb and don't know that all they have to do is replace the LCD display. When i had the problem i've send the phone to Nokia and they gave it back in 3 days with the new LCD.

It's a hardware problem (LCD).
did whatever i can to get rid of this prob including update the firmware to v21 format it, hard reset & soft reset. all in vain..
75% of the 5800 users facing the same problem. most of them found this only after the firmware update to v20

solution is to replace the LCD..i gav my phon to nokia care 2 days before.. i hav to call them after 5 days... waiting for tht.

i got my phone back after 8 days. they changed the LCD. now its working fine. So i think, without replacing the LCD there is no permanent solution for this problem.

yeah ill do it today but if 5 months after I bought it the problem appears hope it doesn´t mean that will happen again after another 5 cause then i would only have 2 warrantie months and kaput
