How great is this song? On a scale of rubbish to great, it is great. Bleecker Street? That's where we meet. Let's try to understand the poet's crooked rhyme. In case you missed it, a church bell chimed. It's a long road to Caaanan, but we are all on it. The voices are leaking. Did you see the shadows touching shadows' hand?
I'm wondering if this song parallels an actual biblical parable - the references to the fog hiding the shepherd, then 'long road to Canaan' sounds like the story of Moses, first testament, or if it's just a snippet and I'm imagining things?
@Chronix74 In response to "you are imagining things. the sky fairy that watches everyone (god to you) is also your imagination." Stop shitting in other peoples' boats. Especially since you are equally clueless as to where your own will take you.
i remember playing guitar on bleeker street with the irish buskers in 77 in the middle of winter and wonder where everyone i knew is now ... patti smith stopped to listen to me once and we smoked a joint together .....
I can't get the image of Bleecker Street out of my head. I can see the fog and the shadows and the people... the sidewalks and the buildings... It's all so alive.
If you are looking for quality, original, hassle free, inexpensive, legal soundtrack music for your next Youtube video or short film....try "Rumblefish Friendly Music" Just follow the link in the "About Me" section on my page. Only $1.99 per track. (Some good songs...not just library music)
I live on Bleecker street. have lived there my whole life.. yes, only 17 years, but this song is so beautifully nostalgic and wonderful... it reminds me a of a quieter, calm chlidhood in a modern, elitist, upper class new york city society that does not so closely resemble hell
Why can't Paul write something this good now? I just bought his newest cd and though it's interesting and sophisticated and probably light years ahead of this song that he probably tossed off fairly quickly, this is the song that sticks and resonates.
Just watched a Courtney Stodden "music" video because I was curious to hear her sing after hearing the news of her recent marriage to Dough Hutchinson .... Thank God, I can come here to wash that ridiculousness out of my mind.
I just heard this song on a 4th season episode of Mad Men. I swear, even as old as I am, I had never heard this song before. I knew, however, even without looking it up, that it was a Simon and Garfunkel song. My older brother introduced me to their music in 1967, but it was Sounds of Silence that I heard first. Been a fan ever since. I miss these guys from time to time. No frills, just great music.
I have this original album on vinyl. I found it at a flea market about 16 yrs ago in mint condition in a box filled with other albums. No skips except for the sound of age. Great album.
I am 22 and am french, and when I listen to Paul and Art, I feel back to the child I was and feel safe. I've been used to their voices and sounds since my early childhood, it's always a pleasure to reach back to those times. If I'm down, making any S&G song play on either burst me into tears (then I do feel better) or just make me smile. Anyway it's always a remedy at the end.
Beautiful...reminds me of those years in the late 60's at the West Village...Bleecker Street. We thought we would change the World...how innocent we were..!
If you got earplugs, try to listen to it with only one side in your ear! On each side there is one voice, the song is quite different if you hear only one singer :) But its fun.
I saw Simon and Garfunkel in 1968 at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. Paul did about 20 minutes by himself, pure music and genius. Art came out and added the rest of the orchestra. Man oh man, what a time that was. Yes, of course, thank you Paul---you have made the very most of our gifts, as we all need to do.
Fog's rollin' in off the East River bank Like a shroud it covers Bleecker Street Fills the alleys where men sleep Hides the shepherd from the sheep Voices leaking from a sad cafe Smiling faces try to understand I saw a shadow touch a shadow's hand On Bleecker Street A poet reads his crooked rhyme Holy, holy is his sacrament Thirty dollars pays your rent On Bleecker Street I heard a church bell softly chime In a melody sustainin' It's a long road to Canaan On Bleecker Street Bleecker Street
@goshnessmaggy Simon and Garfunkel make me proud to be jewish. They are two nice jewish fellas from queens. I was at their concert on September 19, 1981 in central park In front of 500,000 people. In 2002 I saw Art Garfunkel play with his new band at tower records store in front of about 25 people. That is the kind of guys they are.
Not egoist, not after money. Just a T shirt and jeans kind of people. No gold or jewelry on these guys. Simple yet beautiful. I love them both.
I'm uncertain as to whether you'd find a room for $30 dollars on Bleecker Street today, but I can tell you that the streets of England's Cambridge never brought such lovely tears to my eyes. j.

For starters: When Paul Simon was a kid, music was generally taught in public schools. That meant that a large segment of the population grew up acquiring actual training in performing and understanding music, an understanding that included the awareness that, unlike noise, good music usually contains a singable and rememberable melody.

That's not learning music.
I happened to be interested in it personally and now play four instruments and sing, but I was the only person in my class to play an instrument and stick with it beyond grade 5. I don't know why music isn't encouraged anymore, it's so important for kids to have some way to express themselves.
