  • How great is this song? On a scale of rubbish to great, it is great. Bleecker Street? That's where we meet. Let's try to understand the poet's crooked rhyme. In case you missed it, a church bell chimed. It's a long road to Caaanan, but we are all on it. The voices are leaking. Did you see the shadows touching shadows' hand?

  • I'm wondering if this song parallels an actual biblical parable - the references to the fog hiding the shepherd, then 'long road to Canaan' sounds like the story of Moses, first testament, or if it's just a snippet and I'm imagining things?

  • @sawfishhh you are imagining things. the sky fairy that watches everyone (god to you) is also your imagination.

  • @Chronix74 In response to "you are imagining things. the sky fairy that watches everyone (god to you) is also your imagination." Stop shitting in other peoples' boats. Especially since you are equally clueless as to where your own will take you.

  • i remember playing guitar on bleeker street with the irish buskers in 77 in the middle of winter and wonder where everyone i knew is now ... patti smith stopped to listen to me once and we smoked a joint together .....

  • back when music was good and newyork city was exciting. ugh so depressing

  • why am i crying

  • @JOOODYJOOODY I know it brings tears to my eyes too. maybe because it was so long ago that there was such good music happening and now theres shit

  • @allenshepard

Oh come on, there's some damn good music being made today.

How about Maroon5? Or the best country writers?

(If you want quirky, try "Talkin Car repair Blues" by Alan Jackson)...

  • @JOOODYJOOODY Cuz good ole Simon & Garfunkel will do that too ya! :)

  • Wow this is great! I am glad I found this.

  • I'm 21 now and I thank my Dad for exposing me to pure talent at young age, their songs have such good melodies with a deep meaning.

  • I can't get the image of Bleecker Street out of my head. I can see the fog and the shadows and the people... the sidewalks and the buildings... It's all so alive.

  • Sounds a lot like April Come She Will

  • mad men's best episode!!!!!

  • Mad men! Great episode yeah, probably one of the best

  • @ashepe Better than probably. Best 45 minutes of television around.

  • Mad Men's best episode had the best song! S-04 E-07 <3

  • here again: secret favourite

  • I live on Bleecker street. have lived there my whole life.. yes, only 17 years, but this song is so beautifully nostalgic and wonderful... it reminds me a of a quieter, calm chlidhood in a modern, elitist, upper class new york city society that does not so closely resemble hell

  • Beautiful music. This just makes me hate X Factor all the more!

  • Most underrated S&G song, in my opinion...

  • @63chicago6 definately one of them.

  • Why can't Paul write something this good now? I just bought his newest cd and though it's interesting and sophisticated and probably light years ahead of this song that he probably tossed off fairly quickly, this is the song that sticks and resonates.

  • @chomsky88 I guess that just goes to show the difference between inspiration and experience :P

  • @chomsky88 Because he doesn't have Artie with him ;)

  • is there a live version of this song somewhere?

  • @jlew92xx yeah bootlegs around from 65 to 67

  • Once again commenting about the grandeur of Simon and Garfunkel. <3

  • Thumbs up if you dont give a fuck how you found the song, fucking hipsters!.

  • @YOUAREATUBE85

    We watch The Graduate.

  • Thumbs up if you don't know what Mad Men is or didn't find this song from some television series.

  • are simon and garfunkel still alive?

  • @jbkitty91990 Yes. I saw them a few years ago, and Paul just put out a new album recently!

  • I too was reacquainted with this song by Mad Men.

    Newscorner

  • Since I was 5 years old I listen to S&G! The point is not being young but distinguish what's real good!

  • My folks had all their albums. i remember listening to them as a kid .

Im 49 now and Strange enough, i still have those records on my shelf. the usual family Hand Me Down. No complaints.

  • Just watched a Courtney Stodden "music" video because I was curious to hear her sing after hearing the news of her recent marriage to Dough Hutchinson .... Thank God, I can come here to wash that ridiculousness out of my mind.

  • I just heard this song on a 4th season episode of Mad Men. I swear, even as old as I am, I had never heard this song before. I knew, however, even without looking it up, that it was a Simon and Garfunkel song. My older brother introduced me to their music in 1967, but it was Sounds of Silence that I heard first. Been a fan ever since. I miss these guys from time to time. No frills, just great music.

  • I found this LP at the DI and for 75 cents and nothing more, it was mine. The first LP Ive ever owned.

  • i love this song soooo much <3

  • sure was one of the best episodes of mad men I have yet seen.

  • I have this original album on vinyl. I found it at a flea market about 16 yrs ago in mint condition in a box filled with other albums. No skips except for the sound of age. Great album.

  • never understood how simon and garfunkel managed to summon true beauty through only voice and guitar

  • one of the best the S&G came up with. the song flows like a smooth cascade !! too good!

  • this was the first album that i owned and did not have to "share" with my brother. timeless in every way.

  • i too have gotten here due to Mad Men

  • Classic

  • This is the only S&G album I have in my small collection. I sure do enjoy it so.

  • Me and my brother aresinging this song in a school consert we are going to do the harmonies it will be great !!!

  • Wonderful, beautiful, soft-sounding music. :) Love forever.

  • I am 22 and am french, and when I listen to Paul and Art, I feel back to the child I was and feel safe. I've been used to their voices and sounds since my early childhood, it's always a pleasure to reach back to those times. If I'm down, making any S&G song play on either burst me into tears (then I do feel better) or just make me smile. Anyway it's always a remedy at the end.

    Thank you.

  • @matthewzpek reassure me, you're a girl?

  • @matthewzpek i'm 16 and from israel and i get the same feeling

all i can do is thanks my dad

  • @wertheimer10 Off topic but. Greetings from Sweden. I love and support your country! :D

  • Beautiful...reminds me of those years in the late 60's at the West Village...Bleecker Street. We thought we would change the World...how innocent we were..!

  • beautiful song, never remove this video dude

  • "Thirty dollars pays your rent......" not anymore!!!

  • Only one criticism: Its too short! I never want it to end!

  • i saw a shadow, touch a shadow's hand

  • Great song. Very harmonious. Thanks for loading this up bud.

  • For any fan of S&G i recommend you have a listen to a duo called Kings of Convenience. They sound great and remind me of these guys.

  • @kristibrud Kings of Convenience is great... they are a lot like a modern S&G. The same guy also has another group called The Whitest Boy Alive.

  • I'm listening to this just because Binki Shapiro twitted.

    And I liked it!

  • This is absolutely what I need to hear these days. Thank you for posting these songs.

  • *walks up 10 more flights and jumps off the roof* my last words are gonna be BURN A VIRGIN!

  • If you got earplugs, try to listen to it with only one side in your ear! On each side there is one voice, the song is quite different if you hear only one singer :) But its fun.

  • poetry..........if only singer songwriters would read cronicles and learn how to write songs .......

  • Definitely one of my favorite songs of theirs, and I love all their music.

  • I learnt how to harmonise by practising to this over and over... Lesser known classic in my humble

  • I had this album in the Army , 40 years ago , havn't heard any of it since.

    Envy me brothers.....

My memory is telling me I'm hearing all this for the first time

  • Mad Men!

From one of the very best episodes of the series.

    Thanks for Posting.

  • Heard this on Mad Men, Googled, and now saved in favourites, Thanks!

  • Terrific song. I just heard it on Mad Men, then found it here. Thank you, Jude or Eleanor (or both of you) for uploading it!

  • Great song. And check out the great cover from Dirty Lingo. (I don't know how to link to it so just search "Dirty Lingo Bleecker Street"

  • Thumb up if you can here from Mad Men!

  • You can convert this or any youtube video to an mp3 at soundnabber..com

  • that you again, here we held hands and dreamed

  • I saw Simon and Garfunkel in 1968 at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. Paul did about 20 minutes by himself, pure music and genius. Art came out and added the rest of the orchestra. Man oh man, what a time that was. Yes, of course, thank you Paul---you have made the very most of our gifts, as we all need to do.

  • Thank you, Simon and Garfunkel. May you both be blessed for your contribution to the world.

  • Nice to hear some beautiful music from way back then..We've been in a long drought for meaningful music.

  • I own this album. When I heard it on Mad Men I just about exploded. Amazing song!

  • @SUPERSWIFTEH Crap, now I have to finally watch Mad Men. Everyone says I'd like it but never got around to watching it.

  • @leon723 Please do watch it. It's one of the best series ever made for telly.

  • Mad Men, anyone?

  • @mzltv *thumbs up* Mad Men~ Love the songs they use at the end.

  • sweet

  • Perfect song to end a perfect episode...........

  • Beautiful song to end one of the greatest episodes of Man Men!!!! Perfect all the way around!

  • Beautiful song to end one of the greatest episodes of Man Men!!!!

  • Just heard this at the end of 'Mad Men'. great song.

  • Thank you Mad Men for bring this one back.

    Perfect match.

  • Fog's rollin' in off the East River bank Like a shroud it covers Bleecker Street Fills the alleys where men sleep Hides the shepherd from the sheep Voices leaking from a sad cafe Smiling faces try to understand I saw a shadow touch a shadow's hand On Bleecker Street A poet reads his crooked rhyme Holy, holy is his sacrament Thirty dollars pays your rent On Bleecker Street I heard a church bell softly chime In a melody sustainin' It's a long road to Canaan On Bleecker Street Bleecker Street
  • Thanks for the reminder Mad Men.

  • @carlsonmike That's why I'm here! How awesome was it that the greatest episode of Mad Men ended with the greatest S&G song? Fantastic.

  • @randomartist01 exactly!!!!! just thought the same. . . was a great episode, best i seen so far

  • @carlsonmike Ha ha. Me too

  • @carlsonmike Ha ha, me too

  • @carlsonmike: haha...long live the internet

  • They really bring out the beauty of nyc (with 59th street bridge song too, etc) :] makes me proud of being from here xD

  • @goshnessmaggy Simon and Garfunkel make me proud to be jewish. They are two nice jewish fellas from queens. I was at their concert on September 19, 1981 in central park In front of 500,000 people. In 2002 I saw Art Garfunkel play with his new band at tower records store in front of about 25 people. That is the kind of guys they are.

Not egoist, not after money. Just a T shirt and jeans kind of people. No gold or jewelry on these guys. Simple yet beautiful. I love them both.

  • I'm uncertain as to whether you'd find a room for $30 dollars on Bleecker Street today, but I can tell you that the streets of England's Cambridge never brought such lovely tears to my eyes. j.

  • Those who dislike THIS song have to exist without a heart...

  • You know, I have bought all the S and G albums from Sound Of Silence onwards, and not this one. This is the first time I've heard this song, and am now wondering why it is not well known, because it's great and is as good as the more famous songs.

  • I once played this song over and over during a very "bleak" period of my life.

  • Thank you for all of the wonderful songs you've uploaded. I cannot tell you how much enjoyment they've given me!

  • Mando Diao covered this <3

  • i'm feeling fairly depressed and homesick right now..so am loving abit of S and G...they might bring me to tears by the end of the day but no music nowadays can convey such emotion...simply brilliant

  • this is by far my favorite s&g album...still have the vinyl

  • great song

  • amzing

  • Bright Eyes's song The First Day Of My Life has a similar guitar melody to this.

  • This is one of my favorite songs also, and one of their best albums, even though this album didn't sell as well to the public as the others did. Beautiful, pure poetry.

  • @tedb675 your right, such a classic yet under rated album

  • a song from another world. It makes you forget everything and drives you in its awesome melody and voices. S&G, awesome music

  • so schön ich Liebe diese Musik. Mando Diao haben ein gutes Cover von dem Song gemacht. Auch mal reinhören.

  • One of my VERY fav. S & G songs. thanks for posting this!!! I love this album: i think it was the best they every did.

  • WoW *.* die Girarre im Hintergrund ist einfach toll :D x3 und die Stimmen erst O.O es ist einfach gehalten und das beste ist draus geworden :D x3 Hamma! :) Kann ich mir immer wieder anhören! :)

  • no words can describe this song or their music. beautiful can be one:)

  • Hey,i think this was a quite intelligent word.;)

  • snif so sad. i don't know if i should listen to this kind of stuff on sundays.

  • Fifth Ave station. I used to take the train to queens from that station and I would try to visualize where exactly they stood! What innocence! I loved them both.

  • Well, there are 2 guys who are inspired by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. The music is almost the same haha.

The name is: Kings of convenience

  • i bought this album when it first came out

played it over and over my kids knew all the words, now my gd kids are grown and they know every song also, where have songs like this gone, we need more of simon and garfunkle

  • "where have songs like this gone?"

Meaning, why are new songs this good hardly ever heard anymore?

For starters: When Paul Simon was a kid, music was generally taught in public schools. That meant that a large segment of the population grew up acquiring actual training in performing and understanding music, an understanding that included the awareness that, unlike noise, good music usually contains a singable and rememberable melody.

  • and poetry, a story, lyrics that last generations. my boyfriend and I joke about the the vibrations that rattle car windows nowadays. we say "oh that will be a classic in 40 years" no staying power. just in your face provocation.

  • @BenBarfuss Music isn't really taught in school anymore, when I was a kid all we did was sit and sing...

    That's not learning music.

I happened to be interested in it personally and now play four instruments and sing, but I was the only person in my class to play an instrument and stick with it beyond grade 5. I don't know why music isn't encouraged anymore, it's so important for kids to have some way to express themselves.

  • "I saw a shadow touch a shadow's hand" beautiful

  • The last verse blows me away!

"It's a long road to Canaan."

  • One of their very best, so peaceful and touching. No words can express what I feel when I'm hearing this song.

  • I totally agree! I listen to S&G when I need to calm down or just relax. They always put a smile on my face and make me breathe more easily. This is true music for my ears.

  • i like the bass a lot

  • It's all played on one guitar. It's amazing guitar work by Paul.

  • No, if you hear carefully you will realize that there is a bass in this recording. It's also in the sheet music for this song.

I am pretty sure there are live performances with only one guitar played be Simon but that's only when they couldn't have the bass player with them

  • Eerie song, but very nice tune and the harmony is soothing..

  • my first album. a gift from my sister when I turned 13 in 1968. wonderful!!

  • When I had this album many years ago..this was my favorite. thanks for posting.

  • Amazing!

  • Oh yes, i love that song!

  • lovely

  • Thank you for uploading this. Easily my favourite of theirs.

  • No problem. It's a great song, one of my favorites too!

  • @JudeOrEleanor Two years later and I still come back to the same video just to listen to this amazing song. Music at it's finest. Food for the soul.

  • @Yeti22 it sucks they never played this in concert
