Man, I keep seeing the same comments. Does anybody get that the final line in this ad is a joke about how the game is this epic, amazing story that you aren't going to see in theaters, but instead on your gaming console? That was a major selling point before multi-player took over gaming. essentially, "Hey people, this is an amazing story and it looks awesome! Buy it and a playstation, and joy will be yours!"

who ever told u that i bet he is under than 18 years of age. whe i was youngr grafix was every thing to me until today but ff7 had the best grafix for it time. if u see all the reviews that it had all of them mentioned the crazy good grafix and they said they havent seen a game that looked like this befor and that was when the game came out in 1996

I really want to play this game. I don't care if it isn't really FF-ish, the story and characters all sound really interesting. Plus, my friend at school talks my ear off about it and makes it sound really cool.
Even though it is very dated, it still could be the greatest RPG you will ever play. In a time when adventure games were starting to grow stale, this one re-defined everything and set the standard for what was to come after it.
Gamers were still being switched on to these 'amazing' 3D games just before Final Fantasy 7 was released...it's just that the final fantasy series already had a well developed game to apply the technology to, so it was miles ahead of the competition

The only bad final fantasy's were two and five, other than that all the other final fantasy's are good in there own way, seven was the first with 3-D graphics which makes it very special, though I have to say my personal favorite is six while seven comes at a very close second, and no Aerith's death isn't the first sad scene in video games
They sure did overhype the motorcycle scene, especially in America....and it only lasted around three minutes...in a game that takes hours upon hours to complete.

People assume that because it tends to be true. You may be an exception, it doesn't disprove the rule. Most of the FF7 fanboys out there are the kids who got the Playstation 1 as their first console, and FF7 was the first in the series that they played. I can understand the nostalgia.
My personal opinion is that Square set the bar at such an absurdly high level with FF6, that it would be impossible to top. They tried with FF7, which is a good game, but is rather overrated in my opinion.
FF7 was hyped like crazy due to its (atrocious) 3D graphics, its cutscenes, and the fact that its villain looked badass walking through fire with a big sword.
I don't begrudge anyone their nostalgic feelings about FF7, but what annoys me is hearing people say "OMG Aerith dying is the first sad moment in a video game." These people have obviously never played games like FF4 and FF6, which had numerous scenes that are equally - or more - heartbreaking than that famous part from FF7.

You think ff6 is so great and that you're just such a "hardcore" gamer/intellectual from citing it. But why don't you try all the crapload of actual obscure, and even better rpgs? what about Phantasy Star 2? or even better why dont you REAL fanboys mention stuff like Planescape: Torment (which crushes ff6 in a meat grinder)?
I didn't mention other, more obscure games because the discussion here is about Final Fantasy. I loved Torment, Baldur's Gate, etc, but those are a different kind of game. If you want to talk about other good console RPGs, I was a big fan of the Lufia and Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games.
All this stuff comes down to personal preference, anyway. Like I said in my earlier post, if FF7 is your favorite, good for you. I prefer FF6. And we do agree on one thing- FF4 is pure quality too.
FF7 represents the culmination of a decade of RPG innovation & FF anthology by that point, and the remarkable effort still stands the test of time as one of the best games EVER, not just FF or RPG, and it stands now because of said effort (which at the time was unheard of). And from all kinds of players, NOT just from fanboys, who are actually people like yourselves

It was an ok game but SFZero is right, it's so overrated. It is NOT the greatest game ever made, sorry, Ocarina of Time takes that spot in any poll. Trust me, gaming polls vote FF7 as like the 5th best game. But anyway, FF9 made up for this and FF8 because it went back to what FF is all about, fantasy, not realism, dark and grungy and trying to be hardcore. I have to agree with Minty on this. Look, I never meant to open a can of worms this magnitude. I just think it's overrated. There are BETTER Final Fantasy games. I'll tell you what was horrible about Final Fantasy VII though: The movie sequel. It's about the only thing I haven't picked up in this compilation. It was just a fanboy's wet dream. I'm hoping these additional scenes they're adding will add some substance to it. By the way, I'm wondering if any of you played a 2D Final Fantasy title?

Should I be surprised about the negative marks? LOL. You're right. It's not bad, it's a great game, but I believe these are the same people who've never played Final Fantasy VI and lower. Let's remember that VI covered a sort of sci-fi theme too, VII. Of the games each platform, I liked III on NES, V on SNES, IX on PS, and X on PS2.

That I do agree with. Aerith's death was probably one of the most memorable scenes in the game and yes, the story is great though I falls apart towards the end. Regardless it managed to suck me in. I thought it was great for it's time but it's like I've said, VI and below should also be played, look beyond the graphics, and look into those stories as well. Then tell me FFVII is still the best. Still, of all the games I think FFVIII had the worst storyline.
See, I hated FF7 and FF8 because their stories were just...silly, they kept jumping scenarios and it became so over the top, you kinda began to wonder where the hell they were going. FF9 to me took back the glory of Final Fantasy, smooth story telling, characters you could easily warm to, epic music, suberb battles, excellent ending. FF10 was ok, and I hate FF12. Boring, terrible and awful control system. They should have to stuck to the FF9 formula.

Well, while I don't agree 100% on the story issue, I agree with Final Fantasy IX. It's definitely a dedication to old school FF fans which is why I believe it's one of the best in the series. Well said.

While FFVI is a fav of mine, I love V. All those character classes you can change your character to at any time once you get a crystal! Excellent. I think I happened to like it even more on GBA 'cause I believe it was the most improved of the 3 ported games. The additions to VI were great as well, but it hardly needed improvements as it was already beautiful.

FF6 is good, but in my opinion FF7 was better, FF6 dragged on too long and kefka wasn't much of a villain, he's just a psycho who wants to destroy the world and become god of a ruined world (yes i know it makes little sense) who just irritates you throughout the game, unlike Sephiroth who actually kinda scared me when i was young, with his eerie song and all.
There were some funny parts here and there, but it didn't really have as much emotions as FF7 did, or as many memorable parts as FF7.
You just described Sephiroth's intentions when trying to knock Kefka ya know... abd U cab;t see how you could think that FFVI has no memorable scenes, unless of course you're a graphics whore who doesn't find anything memorable that's not in 3D.
Final Fantasy VII is THE MOST overhyped game in the series, possibly ever, by a longshot. No one is saying it's bad, but it wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is if it wasn't the first 3D one, and didn't have a MASSIVE advertising campaign.
Sephiroth intentions were the same as his mothers, he hated the world, but atleast he had a reason to, he had a tragic backstory unlike Kefka.

Gamers were still being switched on to these 'amazing' 3D games just before Final Fantasy 7 was released...it's just that the final fantasy series already had a well developed game to apply the technology to, so it was miles ahead of the competition

The only bad final fantasy's were two and five, other than that all the other final fantasy's are good in there own way, seven was the first with 3-D graphics which makes it very special, though I have to say my personal favorite is six while seven comes at a very close second, and no Aerith's death isn't the first sad scene in video games

People assume that because it tends to be true. You may be an exception, it doesn't disprove the rule. Most of the FF7 fanboys out there are the kids who got the Playstation 1 as their first console, and FF7 was the first in the series that they played. I can understand the nostalgia.
My personal opinion is that Square set the bar at such an absurdly high level with FF6, that it would be impossible to top. They tried with FF7, which is a good game, but is rather overrated in my opinion.

FF7 was hyped like crazy due to its (atrocious) 3D graphics, its cutscenes, and the fact that its villain looked badass walking through fire with a big sword.
I don't begrudge anyone their nostalgic feelings about FF7, but what annoys me is hearing people say "OMG Aerith dying is the first sad moment in a video game." These people have obviously never played games like FF4 and FF6, which had numerous scenes that are equally - or more - heartbreaking than that famous part from FF7.

I didn't mention other, more obscure games because the discussion here is about Final Fantasy. I loved Torment, Baldur's Gate, etc, but those are a different kind of game. If you want to talk about other good console RPGs, I was a big fan of the Lufia and Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games.
All this stuff comes down to personal preference, anyway. Like I said in my earlier post, if FF7 is your favorite, good for you. I prefer FF6. And we do agree on one thing- FF4 is pure quality too.

FF7 represents the culmination of a decade of RPG innovation & FF anthology by that point, and the remarkable effort still stands the test of time as one of the best games EVER, not just FF or RPG, and it stands now because of said effort (which at the time was unheard of). And from all kinds of players, NOT just from fanboys, who are actually people like yourselves
As you can see ive played all of em on SNES, and no hes not an exception. And i know which will become more legendary as time goes

this was a turning point for many games everywhere, and the first 3d ff ever made. this is a brilliant, must have game (even in 20 years), one that comes every couple of years, a real classic.

It was an ok game but SFZero is right, it's so overrated. It is NOT the greatest game ever made, sorry, Ocarina of Time takes that spot in any poll. Trust me, gaming polls vote FF7 as like the 5th best game. But anyway, FF9 made up for this and FF8 because it went back to what FF is all about, fantasy, not realism, dark and grungy and trying to be hardcore. Sorry fanboys but face it, FF7 is overrated and overhyped, like the PS3.

As for OoT, I preordered 2 gold carts because Software Etc. was giving away a shirt with adult Link(becuz I wanted 2 shirts also but they wouldn't let me & they were even reluctant to sell me a 2nd cart becuz they had 1 box). I have to agree with Minty on this. Look, I never meant to open a can of worms this magnitude. I just think it's overrated. There are BETTER Final Fantasy games. I'll tell you what was horrible about Final Fantasy VII though: The movie sequel. It's about the only thing I haven't picked up in this compilation. It was just a fanboy's wet dream. I'm hoping these additional scenes they're adding will add some substance to it. By the way, I'm wondering if any of you played a 2D Final Fantasy title?

I have played a 2D one myself, I played FF6 until my disk broke T_T I bet none of them have played Tactics either...i like Tactics.

Should I be surprised about the negative marks? LOL. You're right. It's not bad, it's a great game, but I believe these are the same people who've never played Final Fantasy VI and lower. Let's remember that VI covered a sort of sci-fi theme too, VII. Of the games each platform, I liked III on NES, V on SNES, IX on PS, and X on PS2.

That I do agree with. Aerith's death was probably one of the most memorable scenes in the game and yes, the story is great though I falls apart towards the end. Regardless it managed to suck me in. I thought it was great for it's time but it's like I've said, VI and below should also be played, look beyond the graphics, and look into those stories as well. Then tell me FFVII is still the best. Still, of all the games I think FFVIII had the worst storyline.

See, I hated FF7 and FF8 because their stories were just...silly, they kept jumping scenarios and it became so over the top, you kinda began to wonder where the hell they were going. FF9 to me took back the glory of Final Fantasy, smooth story telling, characters you could easily warm to, epic music, suberb battles, excellent ending. FF10 was ok, and I hate FF12. Boring, terrible and awful control system. They should have to stuck to the FF9 formula.

Well, while I don't agree 100% on the story issue, I agree with Final Fantasy IX. It's definitely a dedication to old school FF fans which is why I believe it's one of the best in the series. Well said.

While FFVI is a fav of mine, I love V. All those character classes you can change your character to at any time once you get a crystal! Excellent. I think I happened to like it even more on GBA 'cause I believe it was the most improved of the 3 ported games. The additions to VI were great as well, but it hardly needed improvements as it was already beautiful.

FF6 is good, but in my opinion FF7 was better, FF6 dragged on too long and kefka wasn't much of a villain, he's just a psycho who wants to destroy the world and become god of a ruined world (yes i know it makes little sense) who just irritates you throughout the game, unlike Sephiroth who actually kinda scared me when i was young, with his eerie song and all.
There were some funny parts here and there, but it didn't really have as much emotions as FF7 did, or as many memorable parts as FF7.

Final Fantasy VII is THE MOST overhyped game in the series, possibly ever, by a longshot. No one is saying it's bad, but it wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is if it wasn't the first 3D one, and didn't have a MASSIVE advertising campaign.

No, i found Chrono Trigger memorable, graphics don't matter to me, story and events do.
FF7 is hugely popular, but it was because it was an awesome game that everyone enjoyed, it wasn't too hard, it wasn't too long, it had fun sidequests.
FF6 was good, but not as good as FF7.

But because of this game, it became a successful genre on the console. If you can name another game that came out before FF7 that was as successful as FF7 in creating the RPG genera in the US, you'd have a point against me.
