I sold my c230 sport for a Camry Hybrid only to sell the Camry three months later. Camry was a bunch of gimmicks and had no power whatsoever. Handling was toyotarish...junk.I then sold the Camry and got a tdi and a 1998 E300td. Its about time that America caught up with the rest of the world and give us diesel cars. Even Toyota, Kia, Hyundai , Nissan....... all have diesel lines in Europe.
First of all it is quiet one - whenever I drive to and from work I do not disturb the neighbors - it is driven by electric.
Second of all it is not a smelly one, like a diesel crap. Third - Jeremy hates it and for me it is already a bonus, as I am tired of tory's attitude towards majority of this country. Fourth - it is the cheapest car in the UK with automatic gear box in it category. Fifth - it is simply smart and a looker. I can do more...
@RoryBagetty modern small diesel engines designed by german automakers are almost as quiet as a 4 cylinder gas engine, use more of their fuel, so less unburned fuel smell, i believe diesel engines have improved enough to debunk your comment! dislike!
Except for the engine, and some exhaust stuff in the modern clean diesel vehicles, everything else is the same as in any other vehicle. Most of the repairs are not diesel-specific, and can be done at most shops. Diesel engines also rarely break, since they are very durable.
@CSAKvids more stringent air quality standards cause most vehicle manufacturers to avoid improving engines as it is more costly than improving emissions control, (in america) in europe some of their diesel cars can get up to 60 mpg! (look up the ford fiesta diesel(eur only))
@707lopez89 Yeah 60 mpg isn't unheard of in the UK anyway, 50 is decent for alot of newer diesels too. My Golf mk3 TDI gets me anywhere between 40-50 mpg, but it doesn't get driven too carefully. Not bad for a 16 year old car.
Gallons are different in the USA. Did you adjust for imperial vs US gallons?
Also, the driving cycle that is used to test cars in America is much more demanding than the European tests. In Europe the Prius received a "combined" rating of 3.9 ltr/100 km = 25.6 km/ltr = 60.3 mpg but in the US the official combined rating is only 50.0 mpg = 21.3 km/ltr = 4.7 ltr/100 km.
The new EPA ratings, especially, are pretty accurate for most Americans or even tend to understate fuel economy.
@Watcher3223 I think we would all prefer a Merc. If you can afford a Merc I am surprised you really care about fuel economy. I have to say both of my VWs are diesels and they are both quite nice, especially for the money.
I have had Mazda, Mitsu, Toyota, Buick and Chevys, but my VWs have been my favorites. I would like a Merc but they just arent in the budget.
"If you can afford a Merc I am surprised you really care about fuel economy"
That's presumptuous.
Since when did being able to enjoy a luxury car meant having to accept inferior fuel economy?
And, for those who may be so inclined to drive a more efficient vehicle, it may be less about saving money on fuel and more for wanting to reduce ones environmental impact without sacrificing luxury, especially as "being green" seems to be in vogue.
@roberts459. The amount of energy required to collect and recycle vegetable oil is more than the energy released from the burning of it. Take a few science or engineering classes before you post inane comments.
Why is this video comparing it only to the Touring over the regular Prius? I was planning on buying a Jetta TDI, but decided against it BECAUSE of the price relative to cheaper high mpg cars like the Prius. At this time, an 09 Prius in excellent condition goes for $11,630 according to Kelley Blue Book ( the Touring is $1,000 more. The 09 Jetta TDI is sitting at $15,205 (getting less mpg on higher cost fuel). Look, I don't care about all this petty arguing, I just want reliability and good mpg.
Just bought a pre-owned '09 TDi Like this one. Love it. I wish, actually, the engine was louder. I like the classic diesel sound. Bought is saturday, drove 450 miles home and to work for a couple of days I'll probably fill up on my way to work today. Comfortable and nice inside. I would not get a prius only because the people I know that drive one i would not invite over to my house for a beer. (they probably don't drink beer, just wine)
Don't get me wrong. I respect Toyota. They make fabulous, albeit boring, cars. Just look at the Camry. It's an engineering marvel. It's also an exercise in the mundane. Toyota fans typically look at cars as purely a tool to get from A to B. Toyota owners are typically too stupid to perform maintenance on a vehicle. Sure, Toyotas are extremely reliable. There is no doubt about that. They are also extremely boring. Toyota is NOT an automotive enthusiast's car. It's a hammer to go from A to B.
@ChuffChuffWoo The 09 TDI makes 140 hp and generates around 240 lb/ft of torque. It will run as fast as you want to and still get good mileage. Want to put the car on 110 mph and set the cruise? Feel free. If you like driving a slug, get a prius.
@1impalaman Prius generates 290lb/ft of torque, around the same horsepower, remember Al Gores' son was caught doing over 100mph in an old one - and the new one is faster, and it runs on cheaper petrol, not smelly diesel.
@ChuffChuffWoo You are either highly mis-informed or a bold faced liar. The 2011 Prius makes 98 hp @ 5200 rpm (73 kW @ 5200 rpm), 105 lb.-ft. @ 4000 rpm (142 N•m @ 4000 rpm). That came from Toyota's own website. Modern Ultra low sulfur diesel is far less aromatic than gasoline and less dangerous to work with and be around. I do own gas cars as well, but I really enjoy our TDI.
@1impalaman ....And delivers instant power whilst the diesel is having to shift gears then wait for the turbo to spool up - I had a VW diesel - hated it, compaired to the Prius, it's a sluggish gastly noisy tractor. My 2001 Prius electric motor has 290lb/ft - look it up!
@ChuffChuffWoo If you are strictly speaking of the electric motor, that is a different story all together. Of course electric motors have massive instant torque stating at 0 rpm. Electric golf carts will spin their wheels. Everyone knows that. But the Prius only uses that power sparingly. Most of the time, the gasoline engine is pulling the car. (down the highway for example) I pass a lot of Prius in my TDI. The VW TDI turbo kicks in at 2000 rpm. Peak torque of 177 ft/ft is reached at 1800 rpm.
@1impalaman Tdi a good car - hopefully it will help the USA start to like diesels... would still like to see a drag race between a TDi and a new Prius tho....
There are plenty of GenII Prius taxis with over 300k and even 400k on them. Many on the original battery. *shrug* The TDIs last a long time but so do Prii. The TDI never makes the most reliable car list however....
Bio diesel is pretty neat but unfortunately it is plagued with problems that most people would rather not deal with. It is also not the solution for our fuel needs but it can play an important part in creating the diversity we need for a more efficient and cleaner infrastructure. I'm definitely not against it but please do your research before you start spouting BS. Ohh, 149,000 miles on my $25k Prius with zero repairs. The cash I saved by not driving my old 800hp truck paid for the car.
@farhan007 Nah, it's actually fun playing video game mode and getting the "high score". At 80-85mph my Prius will average 42mpg over a 300+ mile trip. The Jetta will average about the same if driven the same. If you want to argue, head over to ClubTDI and see what those guys are getting when you beat on the car or drive mainly city. If you want facts visit the Prius and TDI forums. For those who want to spout political BS then I suggest you get an education and stop voting until you do!
In the UK where petrol costs around $7-8 per gallon once you convert everything. Hybrids are fairly unpopular as modern Diesel engines are just so good. Americans need to stop wasting money on expensive hybrids and learn to embrace diesel like Europe has over the last 10 years or so.
@oddworldification Def true, I wish they sold the Polo hear in the US...when Americans think Diesel they think old black smoke trucks and its hard to get rid of that stereotype.
Why I everyone hating on the jetta? My mom has a jetta clean diesel and gets 62mpg! And my uncles prius gets only 40! Vw makes the best diesel cars, best Dsg transmission, and best interiors apart from the new jetta that is
@gadgetguy4000 I haven't gotten 60 in my TDI golf, but I've gotten 45 on a long trip at 80-85 MPH. A Prius may get 50MPG at 55 MPH but it drastically declines as you go faster. A long trip in the company Prius averaging 80-85 MPH yielded a embarrassing 30 MPH. Since I never drive 55 MPH, the TDI is actually a lot more fuel efficient.
@codyrichter3058 the best my uncle has gotten at about 60-65 mph is 42mpg my moms jetta has gotten up to 64 on average and that was going 70! Clean diesel is the way to go if you want fuel efficency with low priceing and solid build quality with a reliable engine where as the toyota has a very cheap interior and not reliable my uncle has had it repaird countless time because the electric motor keeps dying he was a fool to buy that peice of junk
@codyrichter3058 I love volkswagens your golf isnt a clean diesel its just a regular one but my moms jetta is a 2010 which is a clean diesel and vw say it help fuel milage by 15% i dont kniw what they did but shes sure happy with it as for me im happy with my 30mpg 2010 golf gti :) i love it to death!
vw won all the way even now with bio diesel fuel your burning clean energy and does not pollute the earth and even smells good and clean. TDI all the way
This is a stupid comparison. They used an upgraded package Prius. A base model is only $25k out the door back then. The Price between the two vehicles is very close when options are considered. The TDi mpg sucks when you take it off the highway. It's a great car but they are simply not comparable unless all you do is drive on the highway. Even then I'm finishing off a 500mile tank at 57.4mpg today in my 2005 Prius that I paid $25k for. lol
The Prius starts out at 25,000 and gets way better gas milage than 40mpg, it gets more like 50-60 and can even go higher if the driver knows what they are doing. I am not a prius owner, but it seems like the reviewer was biased against the prius coming into the interview. The facts were distorted in order to support the position. They didn't even mention tax credits that you can get with the Prius.
US is the only country where diesel sales are far weaker than hybrid.Rest of the world is exactly opposite.US is the only country where Toyota sells better than in Japan and has a cult aura.Toyota has weakest sales in low income markets, if it was really a good deal it would be allover.Made in Japan has a price most cant afford and would not want even if they could.
I have a 2006 TDI like in the video. 100K on it and still like new. I get 600 miles (1000km) per tank every time. It gets 43 mpg no matter how hard I drive it. If I baby it, I get 50. I drive it in minus 30 weather and snow. The only drawback is that VW dealers and mechanics are more difficult to find.
Meh, people overplay the costs of diesel. In my area, diesel is about $1 more than regular gas. If I had gotten the diesel version of my car, I would be paying $1,625 instead of $1,820 per year (as the diesel version gets 11MPG more).
On the other hand, watching this video doesn't exactly help when the top comment is "Stupid liberal obama loving hippie hybrid driving douche bags"...which I suppose might be a worse insult than "redneck Bush-loving asshole" for some folks.
I have a tdi and when I am driving aggressively, I still get roughly 45 mpg. driving carefully, the highest I have seen is 87 mpg. I can drive through multiple states on one tank (Not talking those small east coast states either)
Prius or whatever is a japanese/american enterprise unknown in Europe and rest of the world where diesel sales are record. There are already diesel hybrids by VW, Volvo, Peugeot who shit on the Prius but the estimates say they will not sell over the normal diesel unless diesel prices go up wich should happen if more people buy diesel cars.Diesel will eventually get more expensive than petrol and diesel hybrid will be good soon.
@Olengher btw, the success of the Hybrid over Diesel in US can't be reproduced anywhere else and may have to do with the fact that the batteries wich are coincidentally most expensive part of what it is otherwise a total shit are produced in US so in some form may be encouraged.
Unbelivable biased ! ! ! ! this guy can get it why prius is so popular, and is not $30000. I bought mine for $21900 - 2010 prius II. so it's $8000 less that he says it is, and is not even the base model.
I've averaged 53 mpg hwy. & city combined since I got my 06' Prius & my nine foot surfboard fits inside my car with the hatchback closed, when I put the nose on the dashboard. One of the new models is 6 inches longer. Jetta hopefully will join Prius in coming out with a plug-in hybrid which will greatly increase gas mileage. Hopefully the lithium air batteries being developed will be great in all respects, making electric and hybrid cars even better. Glad to see VW cleaning up its engines + mpg
Also, like he says "many hyper-milers dont even know about the desil powered jetta". he is right because prius drivers dont even have a clue about any other cars, or even what horsepower and tourqe is.
This is almost laughable..my wife is a VW only driver while I am a Toyota only driver...I have a Prius and she has this piece of just TDI.....My car was a few grand more....My gas cost less and goes farther...most important thing is that my car has a lot less maintanance...its always an adventure in a VW because you never know if when you pull the handle to open the door if the whole piece is going to come off in your palm...or in the rain your windshield washer arms are going to fly off..lmao
also, it seems like the prius epa numbers are hirer than i ever hear of people getting in the real world, where as the vw diesel has been well known for getting 50mpg since 1977 when they were first introduced
I love my new TDI and had a difficult choice to make between it and the Prius. For an analysis of the differences based on overall environmental performance, do a google search for "The Search For A Green Vehicle: Toyota Prius Versus VW Jetta TDI"
Better mileage, thus that argument is invalid....I have an idea that they are purposefully driving up diesel costs on purpose to try and push hybrid vehicles.
Diesel is cheaper to manufacture, as gasoline is derived from diesel, thus it should be faaaar cheaper.
30 grand for a Prius? I thought the point was to save money, because it CERTAINLY doesnt save the environment.. in that case, the Prius is a double fail
The Prius is a status symbol, nothing else. Maybe battery & motor technology will advance enough to make hybrids worthwhile in the future, maybe not. But what we do know is there's no shortage of iron and bio-diesel is easily a renewable resource :)
@systemisdisturbed I have a 2002 VW Mark IV Golf Gls 5 spd TDI and I am a smart Liberal who doesn't particularly car for president Obama (Go Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul!) and isn't a hippie nor a hybrid driver nor a douche bag! It gets 42 and 49 mpg and will get 50mpg or better on the freeway. both years 2002 and 2003 with the 90 hp 1.9L did that and had long maintenance intervals. These new ones suck as the mpg is lower and they cost too much!
@systemisdisturbed odd I'm a "stupid liberal obama loving hippie" and guess what I drive a diesel and many of the "stupid liberal obama loving hippies" I know also drive diesels. Why you might ask because we can make our own fuel from recycled veggie oil.
@systemisdisturbed that seems a little harsh. I'm an Obama supporter but I fully support Diesel cars. I wish that the big three would bring their European diesels here to the US.
@srlooking I never heard of paying road tax on a diesel and you said that the TDI is to expensive but the Prius cost 30,000 and the TDI 23,000 don't know where your getting your facts from
my god parents love there prius until they had to replace there batterie I think it cost about 2500 to 5000 they said they didnt see that hidden cost so the got rid of it and bought the TDI and they like it much better over all there is ups and downs to both cars
@cosmo1093 and @AUSTiNKiSER they are both nice cars my friend got a clean diesel TDI and loves it the handling performance I think it's nice I drove it and the fuel economy is excellent my god parents had a prius it was nice but it did lack performance and handling it really wasn't fun to drive compared to the VW TDI and my god parents love there prius until they had to replace there batterie I think it cost about 2500 to 5000 they said they didnt see that hidden cost so the got rid of it and
Avalon and Highlander, and Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 Vehicles to Replace a Brake Master Cylinder Seal so that's not good and they do have more recalls and the prius got hidden cost you have to replace the batterie and that cost around 2500 to 5000 so people have to get there facts straight they are both nice cars but all car company's have good years and bad Years
@hnd4me they prius and the TDI are both nice cars but the consumer reports should get there facts right I read from other reports that the prius get better fuel economy in the city then the TDI but the TDI gets better fuel economy on the highway then the prius and VW had bad years in 2006 and 2007 cause all there cars were redesign and Toyota had bad years to the Toyota Camry had engine sludge in 2002 and hide that that and now Avalon and Highlander, and Lexus GS300, IS250, and IS350 Vehicles t
Totally incompatible to match since V.W. used diesel. It is like comparing Otto to Diesel, apple to orange. A truer comparison is one with objective of saving gasoline while offered the same amenities, safety, HP, and space.
As I tell everybody, don't say you hate a car, don't talk about the car, even if you think you know about it. Go out and drive one! Go to your dealer and ask for a test drive, I'm sure they'd be more than happy to let you drive one for a few hours. Don't listen to what other people think, what matters most is what YOU think and how YOU like the car. Quite frankly, everyone who owns a Prius loves them. I've never talked to a Prius or hybrid car driver who hated their car.
@AUSTiNKiNSER I've driven my cousin's '07 or '08 Prius. It is slow to accelerate and slow to brake. Its steering/pedals are vague and numb. Its interior is extremely cheap and plasticky. It is fairly uncomfortable for its price range. It made me want to fall asleep behind the wheel..or walk; yes the experience was that boring. It also made me ashamed to even be in a Prius. It appeals at absolutely no level other than fuel economy. It is only popular because of the idiotic "green" movement.
@AUSTiNKiNSER My first four points are completely objective. Yes, 0-60 in anything over 10 seconds is very slow. Yes, 60-0 in over 120ft is pretty slow for a car of its size. Yes, the steering/pedals are relatively vague and numb. Yes, the interior is basically completely plastic. In its price range, there are definitely more comfortable cars. The rest of my points are fairly subjective.
What is the appeal of the Prius other than fuel economy or smugness about its lack of carbon emissions?
@Cosmo1093 You your entitled to you're opinion. For another, it's not only liked because the green movement or whatever. What bothers me is that because only YOU think that, other people don't care to look at it and they will run off of what you just said. Me? I think the Prius is very quiet and nice on the inside. Want to feel or see a plasticky, I say ride in an American car. The Prius is very good in my books.
@Cosmo1093 When you say plasticky, I actually think it's not as bad as you make it out to be. The dash is padded with a wood grain textured leather of some sort, and depending on if you get leather trimmed seats and steering wheel, the doors and armrest, and all other areas are covered with fabric or leather. Which is also nice. What car do you normally drive? Be honest.
@Cosmo1093 As for the 0-60, they may SAY over 10 seconds, but realistically, it's more like 9.5-9.8 seconds which isn't bad for a car that gets 50mpg. Braking is really good, some people new to hybrids or electric cars don't like the braking, but because of the regenerative braking, the brakes react a lot faster than conventional brakes.
@AUSTiNKiNSER Those points aren't opinions, they're facts. I will honestly say that people should drive a car before they bash it too.
Some say the quietness of the Prius can be dangerous for pedestrians who can't hear it coming, so whether or not that's a plus is debatable..
Me? I drive an American car. Specifically, I drive a 2011 Ford Mustang, which starts at less than the 2010 Prius.. It is not even close to being as plasticky as you say American cars are.
@Cosmo1093 You can't say it's a fact because a lot of other people would beg to differ.
I think that the Mustang (my friend Hannah's mom has one too) is very plasticky. The Prius has a lot of plastic, but Toyota did a good job of making it feel alright.
And I like driving around in silence with the Prius in EV mode. There is no vibration from and engine, and it's so smooth.
But on top of all that, you can't say it's a fact the the Prius feels plasticky. It's not a fact. It's an opinion.
It depends what year it is, up until the 2010 model year, Mustangs were fairly plasticky.
There have been propositions, even by Congress, to make Hybrids louder for the sake of blind people. People can't identify the sound of a Prius in EV mode running at 5mph until the Prius was within 11ft. That's less than 2 seconds before they get hit, assuming the driver doesn't stop.
If you don't opt for leather, it is fairly plasticky for the PRICE..
@AUSTiNKiNSER Toyota advertises it at 9.8, which is more than likely with a 1ft. rollout. From a standstill, it'll be a little slower than that, which makes 10.1 seconds a very logical time.
The Priuses I've been in without leather seats didn't have leather-trimmed dashes.. Are there even cars that come with non-padded/covered armrests anymore?
At ~120ft for 60-0, I've found Prius brakes to be fairly slow given its relatively light curb weight of just over 3000lbs..
@Cosmo1093 Right, but realistically, my second generation with with 24 hp less than a third generation still does 0-60 in 9.5-9.8 seconds. The 2010, as you can see that we have one from my videos, has been timed at 8.9-9.3 seconds before. The third generation also feels more like a Lexus.
Oh yeah, the dash in the Prius is padded. Except the top part where the speedometer is. Other surfaces feel reasonably good. My parents, grandparents, nor I have ever found the Prius uncomfortable.
@Cosmo1093 So you don't personally like the Prius - I find mine great - I pass most cars on the motorway and am first off at the lights. I don't find one moment boring - I often challenge myself to get more out of the tank - managed 1008 km on 41.5 liters. I don't dislike anyones car - except the ones that are not maintained and blow out fumes... worst today was a VW golf gti poring out smoke! The green movement is great - why not recycle where you can to save waste.
@srlooking Are you honestly trying to make the Prius sound like an actual driver's car? I'm assuming you're British, and that's not surprising that you can pass other cars up with a Prius in the UK, considering small sub-100 horsepower cars such as the Fiat 500 and Citroen C3 are so popular, especially in the cities.
Newer clean diesel cars don't pour out black smoke...
I hope you know about the environmental impacts of the production of your Prius's battery. How "green".
@Cosmo1093 No I did not state a drivers car, no I am not in Britain, actually NZ. It's a perfect car for my 136km commute each day in heavy congested traffic where you can be crawling for 30 mins and stopping for periods (where the Prius is off and silent - perfect for me - peaceful) If you are worried about Nickel you may need to do some research - its in many everyday products, hundreds of millions of batteries before the Prius - do you think people are recycling these like Toyota do?
@Cosmo1093 PS, this car is a start - batteries are already becoming better and safer to help fuel saving, Tesla seem to have done it with the Roadster and soon Model S - these are the true future cars. For me saving over 50lts of fuel a week from my X-Type to the Prius at $2.259 per liter is a big benefit. I love the VW and clean Diesel cars, another great way to reduce fuel - just to expensive to purchase and maintain for me + in NZ you have to pay Road Tax to drive a Diesel!
@srlooking Just like what I said to AUSTiNKiNSER, the Prius's only 2 real appeals is its milage (which is still surpassed by some clean-diesels) and how it allows its drivers to be smug about "being green".
I never said that nickel wasn't in anything else, only that the nickel used in the Prius's Ni-MH batteries causes a lot of pollution to produce - more than other typical applications of nickel. This means its not as "green" as people claim it to be.
@AUSTiNKiNSER You are correct I LOVE my PRIUS and before this I was in a V6 3.0 AWD X-Type Jaguar and although the Jag made me feel 'flash' the Prius is quiet, comfortable and amazing on fuel (saving a 45 liter tank a week) The main reason I love the car is the blend of technology, I love being in EV mode and how the engine turns off, my commute has me sitting/crawling for up to 20 mins at a time - silence - love it! (my first non european car in 20 years!)
I'm done trying to educate people about the Prius. The problem is, the people who talk shit about it hardly know anything about the car! Then, god forbid me try to try and teach and educate them, oh no! I get told I'm a liar and even though I know a thing or two about the car since we have owned them since the year 2000 when they first came to the US. People will be people and it seems as if they don't care to learn or even want to learn. They want to run off false information about the Prius.
The overrated Pruis is more expensive, slower, costs much more to maintain, doesn't handle and is one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen, obnoxious ugly. The VW Jetta has everything going for it, goes 400k+ miles and is easily the winner here.
people - please just shut-up and drive whatever the hell you want - for whatever reason works for you - gas or diesel - domestic or import - hybrid or not - big or small - expensive or cheap - WHO CARES ! if you want to drive a beater - fine - second mortgage your home for a luxury SUV- fine ---- its your life - its your money - its your decision - and its always RIGHT - regarless of what anybody else thinks - just drive and enjoy your ride until you want somethjing else
Rumors are that clean diesel is cleaner than regular gasoline. For many decades we have been hearing that diesel is a dirtier, more polluting fuel. Can someone answer me?
The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel costs $5,000 less than a Toyota Prius but gets 5mpg less.
The Toyota Prius costs $5,000 more than the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel but only gets 5mpg more.
The only benefit to owning a Toyota Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive is that it emits less CO2 than the Volkswagen Jetta TDI
@toyota420xp Why do you write in capital letters? how old are you 10? I never had any major problems with my first car (Golf IV) either, In Europe VW has a excellent reputation and is market leader in many European countries, Germany Austria Switzerland etc. Read the ADAC breakdown statistics the most reliable cars mostly are from VW/Audi,Merc,BMW while Toyota isn't bad but not good either.
Here in Germany there is an independant orginastion testing cars called the ADAC they test cars, offer insurances do safty trainings repair cars everywhere if a car breaks down somewhere in Germany you can call them within 15 minutes you car will be repaired on sight or brought to a workshop. Anyway yearly they publish breakdown statistics of the most reliable and the most unrilable cars on German roads. According to them the most reliable cars are from Audi most unreliable Ford.
@toyota420xp Anyway in all cars I drove and was driven in Toyotas had amoung the most ugly and crappyest interior ever when I was in the UAE I had a new camry as rent a car and I got a real headace of the plastic smell usualy new cars smell nice but in the camry I almost got dizzy (not beeing ironic here) . And if I have the choise between some small things failing in the inside (witch btw never happened to my car) or having the breaks fail and die I'd defnetly go for the first choise.
@paveluds are u on drugs. volkswagens are not the most reliable and are just average or a little bellow. google vw reliabilty and see what people say.
@toyota420xp VWs reliablity is good the problems people have are minimal(window problems, heater problems interior accesory problems, bothersome and lead to a bad image in the US for VW but nothing dramatic) but check the ADAC break down statistics German cars are the most reliable having the least critical breakdowns. While in Toyotas breaks fail, people crash and die Toyota had 1000nds of recalls last year.
@Raffix394 YOU SAY THOSE PROBLEMS ARE MINIMAL BUT THESE ARE THINGS THAT HAVE NEVER WENT WRONG IN MY CAR OR MY OLD CAR. OLD CAR HAD ALMOST 220,000 MILES NOTHING ON THE INTERIOR EVER FAILED NOT THE RADIATOR OR EVEN RADIO OR HEATER. ALL WE REPLACED WAS BRAKES SHOCKS AND EXHAUST BUT THAT WAS AFTER 9 YEARS
@Darwinisti learn yourself what is urea injection, and while you're at it think about biofuels. Don't err in thinking these Jetta engines are like large truck engines-- completely different. Edmunds shows correctly that the emperor has no clothes-- Priuses are for vain, relatively wealthy people who think they're doing something for the planet, when they're really driving an inherently poor, inefficient car made better by bolting on an electric engine.
I can tell you, if everybody have Volkswagen diesel car in big city, quality of air is terrible. And by the way diesel contains more energy per gallon so are those unit of volume even comparable.
@RoryBagetty modern small diesel engines designed by german automakers are almost as quiet as a 4 cylinder gas engine, use more of their fuel, so less unburned fuel smell, i believe diesel engines have improved enough to debunk your comment! dislike!

wimpog97 2 months ago
Except for the engine, and some exhaust stuff in the modern clean diesel vehicles, everything else is the same as in any other vehicle. Most of the repairs are not diesel-specific, and can be done at most shops. Diesel engines also rarely break, since they are very durable.

40mpg? Why do americans seem to struggle to get decent MPG.
CSAKvids 2 months ago 3
@CSAKvids more stringent air quality standards cause most vehicle manufacturers to avoid improving engines as it is more costly than improving emissions control, (in america) in europe some of their diesel cars can get up to 60 mpg! (look up the ford fiesta diesel(eur only))
707lopez89 1 month ago
@707lopez89 Yeah 60 mpg isn't unheard of in the UK anyway, 50 is decent for alot of newer diesels too. My Golf mk3 TDI gets me anywhere between 40-50 mpg, but it doesn't get driven too carefully. Not bad for a 16 year old car.
CSAKvids 1 month ago
@CSAKvids i hope you understand UK mpg and US mpg are different.
byras20 1 month ago
@CSAKvids
The new EPA ratings, especially, are pretty accurate for most Americans or even tend to understate fuel economy.
youvebeenduked 2 weeks ago
@CSAKvids the american gallon is smaller than the rest of the worlds. that is part of it
coffeeman220 1 week ago
@CSAKvids american gallon is 3.4 litres. uk gallon is 4.546 litres so mpg figures seem lower

IMO, I'd rather take a used Mercedes-Benz E-class with BlueTec over a VW TDI or a Prius.
The diesel Merc is a car that's actually serious about being a car, but still yielding good fuel economy and good emissions for its class.
Watcher3223 2 months ago
@Watcher3223 I think we would all prefer a Merc. If you can afford a Merc I am surprised you really care about fuel economy. I have to say both of my VWs are diesels and they are both quite nice, especially for the money.
I have had Mazda, Mitsu, Toyota, Buick and Chevys, but my VWs have been my favorites. I would like a Merc but they just arent in the budget.
Klips17 2 weeks ago
@Klips17
"If you can afford a Merc I am surprised you really care about fuel economy"
That's presumptuous.
Since when did being able to enjoy a luxury car meant having to accept inferior fuel economy?
And, for those who may be so inclined to drive a more efficient vehicle, it may be less about saving money on fuel and more for wanting to reduce ones environmental impact without sacrificing luxury, especially as "being green" seems to be in vogue.

cardude1992 2 months ago 2
Why is this video comparing it only to the Touring over the regular Prius? I was planning on buying a Jetta TDI, but decided against it BECAUSE of the price relative to cheaper high mpg cars like the Prius. At this time, an 09 Prius in excellent condition goes for $11,630 according to Kelley Blue Book ( the Touring is $1,000 more. The 09 Jetta TDI is sitting at $15,205 (getting less mpg on higher cost fuel). Look, I don't care about all this petty arguing, I just want reliability and good mpg.
cghodo 2 months ago

New Prius is far better - this test os out of date
ChuffChuffWoo 3 months ago
@ChuffChuffWoo The 09 TDI makes 140 hp and generates around 240 lb/ft of torque. It will run as fast as you want to and still get good mileage. Want to put the car on 110 mph and set the cruise? Feel free. If you like driving a slug, get a prius.
1impalaman 3 months ago
@1impalaman Prius generates 290lb/ft of torque, around the same horsepower, remember Al Gores' son was caught doing over 100mph in an old one - and the new one is faster, and it runs on cheaper petrol, not smelly diesel.
ChuffChuffWoo 3 months ago
@ChuffChuffWoo You are either highly mis-informed or a bold faced liar. The 2011 Prius makes 98 hp @ 5200 rpm (73 kW @ 5200 rpm), 105 lb.-ft. @ 4000 rpm (142 N•m @ 4000 rpm). That came from Toyota's own website. Modern Ultra low sulfur diesel is far less aromatic than gasoline and less dangerous to work with and be around. I do own gas cars as well, but I really enjoy our TDI.
1impalaman 3 months ago
@1impalaman ....And delivers instant power whilst the diesel is having to shift gears then wait for the turbo to spool up - I had a VW diesel - hated it, compaired to the Prius, it's a sluggish gastly noisy tractor. My 2001 Prius electric motor has 290lb/ft - look it up!
ChuffChuffWoo 3 months ago
@ChuffChuffWoo If you are strictly speaking of the electric motor, that is a different story all together. Of course electric motors have massive instant torque stating at 0 rpm. Electric golf carts will spin their wheels. Everyone knows that. But the Prius only uses that power sparingly. Most of the time, the gasoline engine is pulling the car. (down the highway for example) I pass a lot of Prius in my TDI. The VW TDI turbo kicks in at 2000 rpm. Peak torque of 177 ft/ft is reached at 1800 rpm.
1impalaman 3 months ago
@1impalaman The 177 lb/ft number is for my 05 TDI. Not the newer one I mentioned earlier.

F8L 3 months ago
@farhan007 Nah, it's actually fun playing video game mode and getting the "high score". At 80-85mph my Prius will average 42mpg over a 300+ mile trip. The Jetta will average about the same if driven the same. If you want to argue, head over to ClubTDI and see what those guys are getting when you beat on the car or drive mainly city. If you want facts visit the Prius and TDI forums. For those who want to spout political BS then I suggest you get an education and stop voting until you do!
F8L 3 months ago
In the UK where petrol costs around $7-8 per gallon once you convert everything. Hybrids are fairly unpopular as modern Diesel engines are just so good. Americans need to stop wasting money on expensive hybrids and learn to embrace diesel like Europe has over the last 10 years or so.

gadgetguy4000 3 months ago
@gadgetguy4000 I haven't gotten 60 in my TDI golf, but I've gotten 45 on a long trip at 80-85 MPH. A Prius may get 50MPG at 55 MPH but it drastically declines as you go faster. A long trip in the company Prius averaging 80-85 MPH yielded a embarrassing 30 MPH. Since I never drive 55 MPH, the TDI is actually a lot more fuel efficient.
codyrichter3058 3 months ago
@codyrichter3058 the best my uncle has gotten at about 60-65 mph is 42mpg my moms jetta has gotten up to 64 on average and that was going 70!

I drive it in minus 30 weather and snow. The only drawback is that VW dealers and mechanics are more difficult to find.

the only problem with being a hippie and ownign a diesel is you would probably have no idea how to fix it if something went wrong
13craj 6 months ago 2
Meh, people overplay the costs of diesel. In my area, diesel is about $1 more than regular gas. If I had gotten the diesel version of my car, I would be paying $1,625 instead of $1,820 per year (as the diesel version gets 11MPG more).
On the other hand, watching this video doesn't exactly help when the top comment is "Stupid liberal obama loving hippie hybrid driving douche bags"...which I suppose might be a worse insult than "redneck Bush-loving asshole" for some folks.

Olengher 7 months ago
@Olengher btw, the success of the Hybrid over Diesel in US can't be reproduced anywhere else and may have to do with the fact that the batteries wich are coincidentally most expensive part of what it is otherwise a total shit are produced in US so in some form may be encouraged.

AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@AUSTiNKiNSER I've driven my cousin's '07 or '08 Prius. It is slow to accelerate and slow to brake. Its steering/pedals are vague and numb. Its interior is extremely cheap and plasticky. It is fairly uncomfortable for its price range. It made me want to fall asleep behind the wheel..or walk; yes the experience was that boring. It also made me ashamed to even be in a Prius. It appeals at absolutely no level other than fuel economy. It is only popular because of the idiotic "green" movement.
Cosmo1093 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 Yeah. Okay.
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@AUSTiNKiNSER My first four points are completely objective. Yes, 0-60 in anything over 10 seconds is very slow. Yes, 60-0 in over 120ft is pretty slow for a car of its size. Yes, the steering/pedals are relatively vague and numb. Yes, the interior is basically completely plastic. In its price range, there are definitely more comfortable cars. The rest of my points are fairly subjective.
What is the appeal of the Prius other than fuel economy or smugness about its lack of carbon emissions?
Cosmo1093 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 You your entitled to you're opinion. For another, it's not only liked because the green movement or whatever. What bothers me is that because only YOU think that, other people don't care to look at it and they will run off of what you just said. Me? I think the Prius is very quiet and nice on the inside. Want to feel or see a plasticky, I say ride in an American car. The Prius is very good in my books.
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 When you say plasticky, I actually think it's not as bad as you make it out to be. The dash is padded with a wood grain textured leather of some sort, and depending on if you get leather trimmed seats and steering wheel, the doors and armrest, and all other areas are covered with fabric or leather. Which is also nice. What car do you normally drive? Be honest.
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 As for the 0-60, they may SAY over 10 seconds, but realistically, it's more like 9.5-9.8 seconds which isn't bad for a car that gets 50mpg. Braking is really good, some people new to hybrids or electric cars don't like the braking, but because of the regenerative braking, the brakes react a lot faster than conventional brakes.
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@AUSTiNKiNSER Those points aren't opinions, they're facts. I will honestly say that people should drive a car before they bash it too.
Some say the quietness of the Prius can be dangerous for pedestrians who can't hear it coming, so whether or not that's a plus is debatable..
Me? I drive an American car. Specifically, I drive a 2011 Ford Mustang, which starts at less than the 2010 Prius.. It is not even close to being as plasticky as you say American cars are.
Cosmo1093 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 You can't say it's a fact because a lot of other people would beg to differ.
I think that the Mustang (my friend Hannah's mom has one too) is very plasticky. The Prius has a lot of plastic, but Toyota did a good job of making it feel alright.
And I like driving around in silence with the Prius in EV mode. There is no vibration from and engine, and it's so smooth.
But on top of all that, you can't say it's a fact the the Prius feels plasticky. It's not a fact. It's an opinion.
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@AUSTiNKiNSER I gave you numbers, not opinions..
Cosmo1093 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 Yeah. Her mom's is either a 2009 or 2010. I haven't asked. : I
Oh yeah, that's why when I'm in EV mode in a neighbor hood, I keep my eyes peeled for kids.
You know, my Prius is package #5. It has everything BUT leather. Would you mind if I made a video for you?
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@AUSTiNKiNSER Toyota advertises it at 9.8, which is more than likely with a 1ft. rollout. From a standstill, it'll be a little slower than that, which makes 10.1 seconds a very logical time.
The Priuses I've been in without leather seats didn't have leather-trimmed dashes.. Are there even cars that come with non-padded/covered armrests anymore?
At ~120ft for 60-0, I've found Prius brakes to be fairly slow given its relatively light curb weight of just over 3000lbs..
Cosmo1093 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 Right, but realistically, my second generation with with 24 hp less than a third generation still does 0-60 in 9.5-9.8 seconds. The 2010, as you can see that we have one from my videos, has been timed at 8.9-9.3 seconds before. The third generation also feels more like a Lexus.
Oh yeah, the dash in the Prius is padded. Except the top part where the speedometer is. Other surfaces feel reasonably good. My parents, grandparents, nor I have ever found the Prius uncomfortable.
AUSTiNKiNSER 11 months ago
@Cosmo1093 So you don't personally like the Prius - I find mine great - I pass most cars on the motorway and am first off at the lights. I don't find one moment boring - I often challenge myself to get more out of the tank - managed 1008 km on 41.5 liters. I don't dislike anyones car - except the ones that are not maintained and blow out fumes... worst today was a VW golf gti poring out smoke! The green movement is great - why not recycle where you can to save waste.
srlooking 10 months ago
@srlooking Are you honestly trying to make the Prius sound like an actual driver's car? I'm assuming you're British, and that's not surprising that you can pass other cars up with a Prius in the UK, considering small sub-100 horsepower cars such as the Fiat 500 and Citroen C3 are so popular, especially in the cities.
Newer clean diesel cars don't pour out black smoke...
I hope you know about the environmental impacts of the production of your Prius's battery. How "green".
Cosmo1093 10 months ago
@Cosmo1093 No I did not state a drivers car, no I am not in Britain, actually NZ. It's a perfect car for my 136km commute each day in heavy congested traffic where you can be crawling for 30 mins and stopping for periods (where the Prius is off and silent - perfect for me - peaceful) If you are worried about Nickel you may need to do some research - its in many everyday products, hundreds of millions of batteries before the Prius - do you think people are recycling these like Toyota do?
srlooking 10 months ago
@Cosmo1093 PS, this car is a start - batteries are already becoming better and safer to help fuel saving, Tesla seem to have done it with the Roadster and soon Model S - these are the true future cars. For me saving over 50lts of fuel a week from my X-Type to the Prius at $2.259 per liter is a big benefit. I love the VW and clean Diesel cars, another great way to reduce fuel - just to expensive to purchase and maintain for me + in NZ you have to pay Road Tax to drive a Diesel!
srlooking 10 months ago
@srlooking Just like what I said to AUSTiNKiNSER, the Prius's only 2 real appeals is its milage (which is still surpassed by some clean-diesels) and how it allows its drivers to be smug about "being green".
I never said that nickel wasn't in anything else, only that the nickel used in the Prius's Ni-MH batteries causes a lot of pollution to produce - more than other typical applications of nickel. This means its not as "green" as people claim it to be.
The Golf GTI diesel is $5,055USD cheaper.
Cosmo1093 10 months ago
@AUSTiNKiNSER You are correct I LOVE my PRIUS and before this I was in a V6 3.0 AWD X-Type Jaguar and although the Jag made me feel 'flash' the Prius is quiet, comfortable and amazing on fuel (saving a 45 liter tank a week) The main reason I love the car is the blend of technology, I love being in EV mode and how the engine turns off, my commute has me sitting/crawling for up to 20 mins at a time - silence - love it! (my first non european car in 20 years!)
srlooking 10 months ago

Raffix394 1 year ago

German cars are more reliable because they are built to last.
paveluds 1 year ago
@paveluds are u on drugs. volkswagens are not the most reliable and are just average or a little bellow. google vw reliabilty and see what people say.
toyota420xp 1 year ago
@toyota420xp VWs reliablity is good the problems people have are minimal(window problems, heater problems interior accesory problems, bothersome and lead to a bad image in the US for VW but nothing dramatic) but check the ADAC break down statistics German cars are the most reliable having the least critical breakdowns. While in Toyotas breaks fail, people crash and die Toyota had 1000nds of recalls last year.
Raffix394 1 year ago
