Mr. Rojas!! Quick Q, have you ever attempted to start a fire with your avg dinner spoon? Considering it's concavity/parabolic properties, does it have enough surface area to reflect enough light to ignite a small amt of tinder? It'd be easy to walk around with a shiny, proven spoon to start your fires in emergency situations..
@gma683e066736 This is something I would like to know as well... but the focal lenght looks far too short for Moons and Stars, etc... Also too uneven, this is a shame

@Orangmaniac Yes, white would be better. Black makes it easier to see a reflection in it, so many people tend to think of that as a better mirror... but you don't want a mirror (which is for seeing images) in this case, you want a reflector!
Hello, I speak Spanish so I did not understand the instructions. I wonder what kind of tape or paper you used. Sorry you had to use a translator. Infinitely appreciate your response. Excellent video, greetings from El Salvador
"to get to be a mirror it takes alot of work" No it dosent, after its sanded you do a chemical nickle plateing then a chemical silver plateing there its now a mirror, no buffing required. Besides trying to create a mirror with stright aluminium is pointless the crap passidises almost instantly.
Hey Dan! I really enjoyed this video! I scored a free dish from Direct TV and will begin the transformation process. I used Mylar as a quickie fix and got enough focused energy to boil water, but the focal point was not sharp enough to really get things going. Great Video!
I was wondering how well these would work if you polished the dish with jewelers rouge. We used to polish semi truck rims with it and they would blind you when you were done. We used a grinder with a polish pad and sticks of jewelers rouge. Its takes awhile but works wonders
Ok....you harnessed the suns power...wow....now what? Is it one of those emotional touchy feely things? Guess I dont quite get it yet. We've been trying to use it cheaply for decades to no avail. This 18 inch disk is good for nothing more than receiving television channels. If you want to boil water, try a match and some dead wood.

@jaffa25 A heat sink behind the PV cell is essential. Most silicon cells have a max operating temp of only 60C. At the focal point of even a small 1m dish you'll get 600 - 800C. If the cells are 10% efficient that means the heat sink must remove the remaining 90% of the heat.
This can be drawn off for water heating, steam generation and/or some kind of power generation using either stirling or rankine cycle.
if you fork out a little more on the solar panel, sharp (i think) has a triple layer cell that is around 40% efficient (there are probably more but this one i've seen around )
im not saying it would eliminate the heat sink but would mean 1/3rd less heat energy. :)
You could make a bunch and put them in a circle and focus all the focal points to a single point, say pointing at a metal boiling pot or some steam engine or something :)
Ok.. all of the videos I see posted on this subject don't say what we are to do with that concentrated heat. Why go thru all that trouble just to light sticks? How do you apply this to heating water or your home or making electricity? FYI I don't own a home, but if I had one I could figure it out myself... I'm trying to come up with ways to apply this stuff to heating an apartment I rent.
I just pulled one of these from a neighbors dumpster after helping my father in law build a dish from scratch (3 footer from cardboard and chrome vinyl) now I can make my own for freeeee. nice.
ok, im new at all this, can this be used to reflect the sun rays onto a soler panel?.. I hear the Israeli's have this to power large wattage inverters for hospitals and government buildings...so, will it help or not?...thanks.
Will this also reflect concentrated sound waves? FYI, I'm curious at all of its applications, and I'm also trying to line my walls with sound-proof material. Neighbor issue, ftl!
I'm trying to keep the sound in, since I have a movie theatre stereo system that is hooked up now, but can still be heard from outside. The room its in is like a guest room, not too furnished or anything.
You're completely on the wrong track for sound insulation. A solar dish isn't the answer haha. You need soundproof egg crate type soundex foam to absorb your noise. Carpet will absorb some sound but not near as much as materials made for this purpose.
You need fireproof foam for the walls or cushion behind the drywall. Even a thin layer will work. The sound vibrations transfer through hard surfaces. Try prosoundfoam com

But you won't need to add reflective coating to bounce sound waves. The reflective coating is only needed for solar applications. The bare dish will work perfectly.
We did a project similar to this. We used an 18" dish. It can burn paper, but it doesn't get hot enough for us to at least boil water. Perhaps we need a bigger dish.
Are you familiar with vacuum forming? If not, wikipedia it. Back? Alright. What if you perforated the mold with holes, hooked it up to a vacuum from behind, put an adhesive on the surface, and vacuumed the material into it?
well....when you take the dish down there are 4 bolts that fit fluch in the holes....i know im a tech
if you really wanna make it look pretty withou the mylar start with 100grit then do 200 jump to 600 the 800 last finish with a very high grit (2000ish) it can be found at an autozone type store for removing scratches from clear coats
This is what they should have in the most poor parts of Africa and India. Insted of walking milies for wood to do their cooking, thay should have mnirrors like this.
I've done this with a 20x22 inch dish. I collect the dishes now and lined several lol. I wish someone would throw out a 3 and half foot dish that would make even more power. Ive cooked a single burger in a tiny 4 inch square cast iron pan and it works well, but cant do much with a 4 inch pan. anyway, instead of having to put the bolts back in like you did, you can fill in the holes with jb weld and then sand. the bolts stick up higher a bit but either way, doesnt matter too much. nice video.
i belive is easy if you put water with soap first you put the reflective film, this help you to remove bubbles and help you fix if you make any mistake
A small comment when applying the reflective tape. Twist a towel into a snake shape and lay it on the bench in a circular shape (like a donut). Place the dish in the middle and the towel will support the dish and you won't have the dish rocking around while you're applying the tape.
: ) so how can we use things like this to power our computers or microwave? : ) i'd personally just like to see actual examples of real life situations where this can actually serve some normal purpose in life that we all rely on on a daily basis. i mean, create some electricity with this or something or show some good use out of it!
good video, but I wanted to point out that the paint these dishes have is not totally non-stick, I've lined one of these dishes before (posted an article about it at the builditsolar website, solar cooking section) and the autoadhesive mirror film did stick to it. It will come off fairly easily if you pull it, but it wont fall off on its own, so it probably isn't necessary to sand it although sanding it will definitely make the surface smoother because the paint is actually a bit rough
Wow, this is an excellent how-to-do video. I'm after a parabolic mirror for many reasons, for example to boost my 3G modem, and it would certainly be a great tool for making fire. But I can't think of any place in this hick land to find dishes. Concerning the foil, maybe hardware stores sell them?
Thanks for the reply. I know you can buy it at their website and I realize that he tells you that in the video. The reason I asked you is because I noticed you live in the phoenix metro area and thought you might have bought it locally but I guess you got it from his website. I wanted to pick some up instead of having to mail-order it.
Check any hobby shop. I know that there's one on 19th Ave. and Northern. Ask for adhesive-backed mylar in the model airplane department. They also sell a little iron that looks like a shoehorn with a rheostat for temperature control to facilitate melting the adhesive backing. The Iron and several meters of mylar shouldn't run more than about $30.
The dishes unsanded are like teflon and a light wax spray will release just about anything. I think if you punched some small holes in the adhesive, this would allow the clear resin to lock it in when finishing side 2. There would be no release barrier that the sheet would otherwise create.

get a smaller solar panel and capture the sun from a greater area.
works out a lot cheaper to use a large mirror and small cell than just using a large cell...
a heatsink might be needed depending on the area/season but thats pretty straight forward

qstendious 3 years ago
It's called Mylar and you can buy it by the roll.

The Solar Reflective Film is posted under description in the video. It's available at their website

The Iron and several meters of mylar shouldn't run more than about $30.

nice vid i have these all around me the dishes i mean so when tshtf all ur dish are belong to us 5*

I think I would use a piece of terry cloth to smooth the material down.
The short cut off pieces can be placed near the edges of the dish where longer pieces are not needed.

Is there anyway to use the dish as a mold; acrylic clear coat the silver film, then peel it off as a super lightweight reflector?
Probewitch 3 years ago
The dishes unsanded are like teflon and a light wax spray will release just about anything. I think if you punched some small holes in the adhesive, this would allow the clear resin to lock it in when finishing side 2. There would be no release barrier that the sheet would otherwise create.
Good idea, not sure what resin would be best.
Spray would be too thin.

:-) He is a stray that adopted us. Great cat and does some really crazy things. They other day he was meowing but taking. I thought I was watching a digitally doctored youtube video. Got the camera and he stopped. Would have been worth a million views on youtube LOL He splits to the roof when our dogs are out of our house in the big yard.
