  • can you give a context for each knot? Like what their specific functions are?

  • i love tying knots!!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm in agreement that the square/reef knot is not very useful. It's easy to remember, sure, but that just tempts you to use it for everything. It slips when you need it to hold, and it binds when you need to untie it.

  • in denmark we call the square knot a "robondsknob" normal people call it a double knot

  • Polish boy scouts (Harcerze) are the best boy scouts in the world.

  • I think mine and shandelears comments should be the top rated. He wait it was rope porn lol. That's clever

  • I can bairly tie my shoes

  • Ang pangit ng musiko

  • Hmm where I'm from, "square knot" is referred to as a reef knot.

  • @tangocolt02 your right

  • rope porn

  • Thank you .. very useful

  • you forgot to put noose...

  • The BSA teaches the “Overhand Noose” or the “Running Loop Knot” in Cub Scouts (refer to Bear Handbook for tying illustrations). I can only think of 4 other noose knots that would work about the same but would take more time and experience to tie.

NOTE: People who ask me to teach them how to tie the hangman's noose, are ether just expanding their tying skills or looking for counseling. I hope you will find the type help you need.

  • @OrlandoBrewing oh, i was talking about the slip-knot (i just looked it up, i thought it was called a noose. lol)

  • @yingtau lol, slip-knot is a running loop knot

  • I liked the music.

  • @ aussieypride94, hey Bitch, im a fucking scout and i dont give a shit about any knots, i cant do any of em'

And i dont give a fuck, maybe like 100 years ago knots mattered when baden powell was around but now none of that crap matters.

  • wow scouts are pathetic ive been doing guides since i was 7 years old now i am 15 and i was able to ace all of this when i was 11 years old in my first year of 10+ and now i am up to braiding like the crown knot

  • You should consider the Zepplin Bend. It faded from memory with the Zepplin - even Ashley was unaware of it, but it is FAR superior to the Sheet Bend for example (which can actually roll under enough tension) for joining two lines or making a loop.

Check out this video & you'll become a believer also. This bend should be in the scouting manual /watch?v=Givv9cBB_Hw

The square knot shouldn't be taught IMO. Too many have died using that wretched knot.

Nice video. Keep up the good work.

  • @kevjay777 Sorry, it’s a good knot to know but it’s not one of the 7 knots in the BSA handbook.

  • @OrlandoBrewing who cares if its not in the book...

  • oh shnap if all scouts should know these then im screwed

  • i just uploaded a vid with knots we use in the ports and sea ships , some u dont see in scout :)

  • my movie on the boy scouts im in 295

  • thank very much

  • The best collection to learn about basic knots. i like it. as a scout leader.

  • my names not scout

  • **MUTE

  • I remember when I was in the scouts the cubs were like these kindergarden and 1st and 2nd grade kids..they looked so cute :D.....awwww.......you've gotta fall in love wid them with their uniforms and scarves and cute little faces

  • simple technique I was taught when i was in the scouts: reef knot:right over left, left over right.

  • The clove hitch is such a useful knot. I use it all the time.

  • in usa are used different type of knots that we use in portugal... the only knots i know from this video are the square knot, the timber hitch, the clove hitch and i think I know the sheet bend and the bowline knot... it is teached to us other knots for constructions... but you certainly know those knots too

  • :P To be completely honest, I learned all of these knots, but I can't remember any of them. I just got my Eagle award and looking back, all I can remember are the most most most basic knots like the square knot, and stupid knots like the sheep shank. Whenever I had to tie something together, I'd always tie it in a random fashion and hope for the best. Maybe I can try to memorize some important knots with the help of this video. Thanks

  • I will never understand why you need to now all these knots. I should dare to say the hangman's noose is probably the most useful knot o3o, yet it isn't here >:O

  • Bring back memories!

  • Im a boyscout thanks man!

  • I came here to learn the bowline knot

I used to do it but when I finish the operation, the two extremity of the rope were long (same size long) it seemed more like an ghost

thx to your video I know how to make 1 one of the extremity inside the circle

my mistake was at 2:03 (loop) when I did this , I did in the center of the rope like an complete noob and I finished the operation I stretch the 2 extremity

now thx to your video i fixed the problem

  • very helpful thank you! i needed these for entering a new troop. i am almost eagle!

  • very helpful thank you! i needed these for entering a new troop. i am almost eagle!

  • the Tuat-line hintch reminds me of a noose

  • maybe I'm crazy, but I looked through all the comments and nobody commented that there are really only six knots on the video, am I counting wrong?

  • @singldad39

    you're counting wrong

  • @singldad39 there is 7 knots there

  • awsom

  • Nice One

  • I used to love scouts lol.. it must be 15 or more years ago but I don't remember much. Other than the fun stuff.. I don't remember a thing about knots... I just remember certain things about a compass and keeping dry and better chance of surviving in a forest and desert.

Do each one of these knots have a specific purpose? Can't remember

  • What happend to the reef knot

  • Fat hands

  • Square knot is the most useless knot ever created

  • Utilizing a 1974 or earlier Field Manual is a good idea as well. Bushcraft was taught prior to 1975, and the further back you go, the more survival information there is. Not parting with my 1934 :) Eagle, 1975

  • tnx for uploading this video..i need this...

  • Thanks for showing the knots, the good video quality and the slowness helped me a lot.

  • in aus the first 1 is reef knot

  • Sir, you should be tying the tautline around an object.

  • hehe I'm a Star Scout and I only know Square knot, Two Half Hitches and the Clove Hitch :)

  • I can't get the taut-line hitch to work right. The rope I'm using 'looks' like decent rope, but came from a shrink-wrapped pkg at Wal-mart. I can't get the knot tight enough and it slips. This is the one I want to know!

  • for a good knot that has all but been forgotton lookup a knot called a zepplin bend,,,in my opionion it is one of the best knots for joining 2 pieces of rope together,,,what i like about it is that no matter how much you tighten it its very easy to untie,,,but it will not untie by its self

  • the "poop loop"

  • cool! i recognized a few from my training at "THW" (German Federal Agency for Technical Relief")

  • your a ginger arent you

  • its help me a lot .. im in KPLI Jun 2010 & been assignd to take Scout for uniform curricular ...thanks a lot

    ...annoury80

  • anyone have some tips on which knot is best for which situations?

  • nice vid. terrible music and you didn't tie the bowline knot right

  • can you do one 7 knots a guide should know? :D this is brill!

  • thx for the video helful to me!

  • I love this video! :) I my self have taught about 100 cub scouts how to tie a bowline, a 2 half hitch and more; and believe me it was no walk in the park!!!!! Love the video! -Proga

  • I was really confused before. (Scout Knots) Now I understand a bit more(: THANKS!!

  • Heya!

I'm the Baloo for the 11th Chatham Cubs.

Any way I could get a copy of this, or have the download turned on?

    YIS

  • wats the type or name caled when you can fit the wrope on to any size? and change size

  • That's a slip knot.

  • its called the sheet bend.

  • @allrampage95 That's called the packer's knot. It's quite easy to do.

  • Great Vid!! I am practising those knots.

I love the scouts, but I'm a guide because that's what my friends are. I've always wanted to be a scout ever since I found out what they were. But I joined guides this year... Now scouts give me crooked looks:(

  • @mayazazu whats a guide?

  • Before scouts were for boys only, there were scouts and there were guides (both the same, but one for girls and one for boys and they were different orginisations). Then, the scouts began to lose boys and declared that girls will be allowed to join guides too. So many guides left guides and guides lost alot of their girls. So now the two groups are in war:(

  • um i didnt really uderstand what you said but thanks anyways:)

  • @mayazazu from where did you heard about that?

  • Nice Video! I am also making videos of knots, soon First Aid Videos

  • @OrlandoBrewing

A nice, clear video featuring some very useful knots. I'm sure that youngsters who need to use rope for camping or work will find this most instructive. Particularly good was the the illustration of how to tie a bowline, which is normally shown in an over complicated manner. This useful knot is easy to tie and the video demonstrated this superbly. Well done.

  • the first one is a reaf knot and the second one is ment to have a round turn at the begining dont know about the one after that but timber hich is right and clove hich an that is one ov the best bowlines i have seen in ages an the sheet bend is good

  • The song reminds me of a old Tycoon game

Good vid i am a leader with a Scouts Canada group

  • Good music and very good knots.

I´ve a funny knot, serch: MrBalkanSerb

  • @MrBalkanSerb Thank you for your kind comments about the video. It amazes me how people fixate on the music in the video. Those who dont like it cant seem to fide the mute button fast enough. LOL Thanks.

  • Hey, out of curiosity, what are the specialized purposes for these knots? I do a lot of work with ropem and I get by with the square, half hitch, and bowline knots. I was just wondering if you knew what the different jobs are for each knot.

  • Taut line hitch: the hitch slides along the rope when pushed with your fingers, otherwise it binds and does not slide. Thus you can tighten a line and it will stay tight. If you need to take up slack, just slide the hitch along the rope. Demo would be better if tied around a pole or tree. Timber hitch: The hitch is only half of the whole knot. Take the long end, tie a half hitch at the end of the log and the log can be pulled easily. Sheet bends can join two lines of different diameters.

  • brutal music

  • yea i know them :)

  • i know em all im hoping to make Eagle

  • Great video! Thanks!

Could you make another video explaining the different uses of the knots please?

  • yes it would be greatly appreciated...thanks

  • going for my eagle board of review tomorrow. this vid helped a lot, thanks

  • Being a scout is something to be proud of! Join scoutface (dot com) and let's build together the biggest international on line scout community!

  • doing the knots around a pole or a stick would have been a much better video.

  • thanks for this video!

  • ime a cub

  • 4 star video. Loses out on 5 star as it is way too quick. e.g. the bowline.

  • where can i buy the soundtrack?

  • sheep shank?

  • Dude... isn't the first knot suppose to be Reef Knot and not Square Knot? Another knot that MUST be familiar to all Scouts is the square lashing as well.

  • Only in Scouting is the reef knot called the square knot. This video is only on knots, a lashigs video is still in the works.

  • @OrlandoBrewing the square knot is called the square knot, in both sailing, and climbing :D kinda depends on the person.

  • @OrlandoBrewing I suspect the difference in the name is a US/UK variation. I was a UK scout and we called it a Reef knot, but whatever you call it it's the same knot...

  • they have called a reef knot the square knot for sometime now but I know what you mean the true square knot is different

but the term square knot caught on from when the brits used to tell their sailors square away the sails REEF the sails was the term from( rif' viking term)

  • @5mav5 A square knot IS a reef knot dude

  • @5mav5 really all lashings are essential to scouting depending on what you want to make

  • @5mav5

  • you missed out the noose knot. great video though

  • noose is easy.

or you can do the bowling knot

    relatively the same

  • Thanks for uploading this video, number three was th eone i was after, thanks

  • i spent 7 years on the singapore police force, NO ONE ties better knots then us!

  • Thank you for all your nice compliments. This video was intended for instruction of Boy Scout youth in accordance to the Scout handbooks. The names of the knots and method of tying them is taken from the Scout books. This is not intended to be the only way to tie these knots. Please keep you comments polite as youth may be reading them. Thanks

  • when he did the bowline he should have ended with the bitter end on the outside not the inside.

  • no he did it right

  • sorry i used to have a problem with that. i wanted to make sure other people didn't keep on makeing that mistake but apperently i still make that mistake. the thing is you can tie a bowline by doing a sheetbend on a bite but it doesn't take the load as nicely because the ins and outs are wrong, even though the knot is right. again sorry about that, and i acted to fastly. (Eagle Scout Eric Schwerdt)

  • ya i never tie bowlines like the vid anyway I do the faster onehanded method and I never have to think about which way to wrap the line. I wasnt taught the "rabbit" method (the on in the vid) until later

  • yeah the music was jamming, but why are there no quick release knots? under stress the rope becomes too hard to remove and I don't like wasting rope.

  • gd vid

  • If only 7 then a sheepshank should be around 30 - really not terribly useful. A truckers hitch is number one.

  • Great Like the music also thanks

  • i stand corrected u have done the reef knot( square knot)

    THANKS ANYHOW!!!!!!!!

  • this helped me alot but i need to know how to do the Square lashing not

  • thank you so much this was very helpful

  • yay knots!
