  • bad

  • a beautiful play... get the chills...!!

  • It's been 4 years since I've watched this vid. I still get the same chills. Stunning <3

  • I listen to this regularly and I'm always amazed at the emotion that comes out of his violin. Music like this give my spine divine tingles.

  • bravo bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Isn't that interesting? The top comment says that 10 months ago, 8 people disliked it. Now, there's 4 more dislikes over the course of the next 10 months after that comment. It just goes to show, everyone loves your music!

    Superb performance as always, Joshua.

  • 3:02 onwards is my fave.

  • 12 people who've watched this, are deaf.

  • fantastic....

  • He also played this as an encore in San Francisco

  • 12 people are jealous of the refined talent Joshua Bell has.

  • He played this for an encore in Tacoma last night. :^)

  • breathless perfomance, best ever.

  • Absolout incredible

  • Chopin and Bell. What could be more sublime

  • He make me feel good and happy. He will be a mega star.

  • @propatria0704 "will be" a star? Boggle. He's been pretty much the premiere violinist on the planet for quite a few years now :)

  • @vsmith23 -- Totally agree. Thank you for correcting me.

  • i dont want to criticize cause that was great but sometimes his bowarm could use a little straightening. not that ive seen many people with perfect bowarms tho lol

  • I just love the bow control

  • He might be my favourite person ever!

  • @Kuraujia Of course THIS isn't Traumerei... But look at the author's comments: he says: Joshua Bell plays Traumerei by Frederic Chopin....

  • Traumerei is by Schumann ...

  • @MrGrasshopper60 But this song is not called Träumerei. It's Nocturne. Go and watch a video where Joshua plays Träumerei. It's just amazing!

  • I cried.

  • whoever does not like Joshua Bell is crazy

  • beautiful !

  • how he plays this gives me chils... truly captivating.

  • One of my favourite Chopin nocturnes by my favourite violinist. Doesn't get better than that! ♥

  • I love Joshua Bell, he has extroidinary talent that is very rare.

  • I heard this live.. it was amazing and made me cry.. the quality of this recording is lacking and he added a few extra ornamentation's which yeah.. didn't fit.

  • I dont understand.. His interpretation of most of the pieces is impeccable but he failed at that one...

  • For me, I'm just not feeling it.. I love other Violinists' interpretations of this piece, but it just doesn't hit home for me. He sounds like too many other Violinists I've already heard--only difference is he's an international performer. One of my favorite Violinists is Augustin Hadelich, who I listen to every day and has this sound like I've never imagined could come from a violin. So I guess when I listen to any other player, it just doesn't sound right to me...

  • the way he plays this song, it takes you somewhere, tells a story, makes you feel something in your heart. magnificent!!!!

  • This piece is marvellous and Joshua Bell of course is a good musician and violinist,

but I don't know why I can't apreciate Chopin's pieces played in other instrument than piano. It just doesn't sound harmonical to me, maybe it's just a problem I have got, or maybe because Chopin composition were mostly made for piano.

    But I prefer listening to : watch?v=PEyEw-8Kuv8

than listening to this piano + violin version

  • My violin teacher took me to one of his performances when I was in 2nd Grade, and when he played this, it Blew. My. MIND!! I could even say it changed my musical taste forever.

  • the way he plays this gets to my very soul! there are no words.

  • what it comes down to is he is good, obviously talented but no more so than a lot of others definitely much luckier than many though. The point though is that there is a difference between interpreting and just flying in the face of intent a line he is flirting dangerously close to here.

  • The reason people do not like his interpretation is because he approaches it as if it were a light dance, and it's not. Every essence of this Nocturne is mourning, and saddening. He plays as though it is a happy frolic through a field of flowers.

  • to much to much ...romantic I mean and to much kills romanticism !

  • He is talented and good looking! The perfect combination for violinist.

How does he make the violin cry so beautifully?

  • sigh~ its annoyin to like everyone of his vid cause its too guuuddd

  • beautiful

  • Amazing!!!

  • WOW! that was amazing!!! its so nice to listen to!

  • 8 people thought dislike meant dis i like :)

  • IMO, there are better interpretations of this out there....

  • 7 people are completely deaf.

  • Wow, seven people missed the like button and/or have no taste.

  • This was probably one of the longest 3 minutes in my life, not because it was boring, it's because the amount of emotion seeps through my headphones and as a result, my brain has forgotten what time is.

  • The description is incorrect. This is not Traumerei and Chopin didn't write Traumerei, it was Robert Schumann.

  • Que belleza...

  • I don't care much for this interpretation. I find it too soft and airy. It is, however, well played.

  • He is the first and best violin player plays Nocturne in C sharp minor PERFECTLY..no one else. It makes one forget everthing and one just goes into that fantasy world. It´s an amazing feeling.

  • @orizja1294 wow you really don t know shit about music...

  • @jasonform seriously, and what makes you think that? One don´t need be a music teacher to be able to see the difference between good and bad music.

  • @orizja1294 He says that to you because of the applied ignorance you're comment gave up. He, while being a fantastic and personally my favorite, is not the ONLY one to play this well. It's a stellar performance, but to say there has been no one else that has played this piece well is just a little ignorant.

  • @JayLovePlaysGuitar Please note that I said as far as I´ve HEARD he is the best one according to ME. Perhaps there are others who play even better or worse or atleast not as good as him, which I had experienced, and when I see or hear someone play bueatiful I´ll not hesitate to share my thoughts. And I admit I should have been more carefull........

  • @orizja1294 .......................And one more thing @jasonform (and I should also be more accurate in future instead of copy/pasting the titel of the music like I did last time, and by the I knew the titel and the name of the composer everybody knows.)

It was all a missunderstanding! But thanks for pointing things out.

  • @orizja1294 Actually, you said neither of those things. But it's all behind you now.

  • Beautiful video!

    Thanks for sharing.

    Who is the pianist?

  • Sao con người lại có thể làm ra những thứ siêu phàm như thế nhỉ.

  • Si los angeles cantaran lo harian así...

  • who are the 6 fucks that disliked this?

  • ademas de tocar maravilloso es lindo

  • At 2:12, I thought for a moment that Joshua Bell was suddenly going to burst into Havanaise of Saint-Saens...

  • I love this song.......very nice

  • Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

  • Encore une découverte d'Isabelle Lefebvre...

  • Chopin and Bell. What could be more sublime.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats the best song for violin

  • Esta pieza es de mis preferidas¡¡¡ Me encanto poderla escuchar ejecutada por

este gran musico¡¡¡ amo el sonido¡¡¡

  • I'd recommend Nocturne in C-sharp Minor. op.posth/midori

  • I do not deny that Bell has extraordinary talent, and it is quite clear that he is valiantly trying to play so lucidly and emotionally, however this interpretation simply does not register for me as the others have...

  • I've listened to several variations and interpretations of this master piece by numerous extremely talented musicians, and I have to say this is one of my least favorites...

  • I _know_ Bell is in a different league than "the chinese girl on the karate kid"

...best not to mention third-world players in the same breath as those

who understand the western musical tradition....and yes, its in their genes....

(musical chauvinist - after nearly a century of observation...) Lets be honest, it will take another century at least, for asian players to learn s-o-u-l ..... I exclude Yo-Yo Ma - an exception that proves the rule...

  • @sdorr What about Sarah Chang? She is amazing!

  • @Kyousuke687 yes, but it still lacks soul - compare any piece she plays

from behind a curtain, to Heifitz, Milstein, Kreisler, and one can tell its a non-euorpean tradition person playing.... perfectly...but too perfectly..... Arthur Rubinstein said "some musicians take the piece out of their pocket, and other take the piece out of their heart..." Yep another century at least for Asian musical storytellers .....

  • @sdorr wow this comment is so racist. I'm pretty sure there are good asian musicians in the world. And not all asian countries are third world countries and China is not a third world country. FYI, i am not chinese nor chinese descendant. I have absolute respect for Joshua but I don't think talking not very nice thing about others is a good way to praise him.

  • @linhduong0809 There many great Asian musicians....just not in the same league

or the same page as those from the european tradition.... yo yo is an exception to this rule...there may be a few other exceptions....

  • Respond to this video...

  • @sdorr I had no idea anybody could pack so much bigotry and racism into so few sentences. I found it rather disgusting that you could, with such confidence, state that all Asian musicians are "soulless" players.

By the way, the statement on your YouTube profile drove me into TOTAL hysterics: "I strongly advise higher education for the dozens of badly-educated folks who want to post something .....mean....or very ignorant...."

Can you not just taste the hypocrisy? ;-)

  • It was better played by the virtuoso Chinese girl on the Karate Kid. That's just sad.

  • Please, does anyone know who arranged this accompaniment? It is way better than the one I have.

  • Nah, the arrangement doesn't work for me..

  • one of the greatest Nocturnes left for the world by Chopin

  • Es increíble,que talento,

    Que hrmoso y perfecto sonido,

Joshua bell pone el alma en sus canciones,

Es de esas personas que nacen para la música al igual que Vanessa mae.

Gracias por subir este video 5/5

  • I think he's a great violinist and has a beautiful sound but I just don't like his technique...

I guess you can have whatever technique you want when ur a virtuoso...

I do love this piece though..it's the one I'm gonna learn next. :)

  • mrami9994, THANK YOU! Those comments were incredibly ignorant. I'm a concert level classical pianist, and it takes absolute brilliance to move me...this kid moves me to chills! An unbelievable and un-matched talent!

  • @y1e2l3l4o5w6 Amen!

I'm sure that the virtuosi of the past would be awed by Bell's playing - and glad to welcome him to their number!

  • VanessaMaeFan18: A violin junkie does not make a violinist!!! To say Bell is not talented is inane. Of course he's talented, you just happen not to like how he interprets violin music. That does not make him untalented!

  • And vanessamaefan18 is THE authority on violin performance!!! LOL !!!

    Just ask it!!!

    Idiot.

  • Comment removed

  • Tayrone2001: I happen to have a master's in music composition and performance (cello, voice), so I do think I know somewhat about this business!!!!

  • tayrone2001 - you may be a music student, and if you do not "get" Bell's beautifully exquisite playing, then, I'm afraid, you might be in the wrong profession!!!

  • says vanessa mae's fan...

  • hahahahahahahaahahahahahahah

  • @VanessaMaeFan18, and vanessa mae is just so much better than bell? definitely....

  • Julliard doesn't seem to think so, but I'm sure you're much more qualified to than they, to comment.

  • @VanessaMaeFan18 this coming from a Vanessa Mae fan. nice.

  • @VanessaMaeFan18 Really, if Josh isn't talented, how come you're not the one traveling the world to please a lot of people? How come, you're not the one playing a Gibson Str.?

  • simply wonderful

  • waooooooooooo que sentimiento...

  • divine and glamorous

  • Recordé llorando lo que más he amado mientras escuche este Nocturno

  • Para mí el mejor violinista!!! Siempre un placer escucharte Joshua Bell. Ven pronto a Madrid. Una fan.

  • Magnifico

  • AMAZING! WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOOOOOOOWOWOWOOWOWOOWOWOWOWOOWOWOOWOWOWOWowoWOWOWOW LOVE IT! LOVE it!!! I'd give my left nut to play the violin like this!

  • HAHAHA, ur left nut?!?!?! lmfao thats a good one.

  • i love how like when he plays it looks like its nothing to him

and the way he holds his violin just baffles me

    bravo!!!

  • O.O *speechless*

    ---BEAUTIFUL (: <33

  • He's a bad guy

    he makes her violin cries

    LOL

  • is tehre a reason he only seems to play romantic pieces? Not that i'm complaining, I adore romantic pieces.

  • I have this as a ringtone too! This is my second favorite classical piece. And Joshua Bell is brilliant. Makes me want to play more often.

  • Защо в този свят всичко вълнуващо и прекрасно е изпълнено с тъга?

  • Not everything in this world i so sad, but listening a wonderful and sad music like this one really makes you believe that everything is sad in this world ;-)

  • Just amazing. I really enjoyed it.

  • Perfect.

  • Very nice...

  • you should see hungarian dance no.1 by him

    i like it so much

  • WOW! Stunning! words can't describe just how good!!

  • wow... can this genius make the violin sing or what?! outstanding control... and I'm not even that crazy about classical pieces... but he makes you appreciate it in all its intricacy!

  • this work just gets in my heart in my veins

  • Awesome piece and one of my favorites. I have this one as my ring tone :)

  • I'm as amazed as I can't say a word :) He is brilliant x 10000000000000. Thanks for sharing :)

  • emet truth

  • he makes it look so easy lol

    love ittt!

  • I can't say a word. It is so wonderful!!!!!!

  • Rubye say this sound good-Rubye get misty

  • Toecallous go and get yourself a nice emory board...this too tore at my heart strings and I am now a "Bell Man"...Oh that I could get my arms around him and shed my tears on the shoulders that play that expressive music and maybe even put a kiss of appreciation on his very lips. I am now a man in love forever charmed by this sound...Uncle Junior + Josh Bell, words that hang in my heart 4 ever and ever--a fantasy I will dream of tonight and maybe live out one day!

  • Oh Please UnclJunior, Please don't take Joshua from me. Joshua and I will be getting married soon. Pleas have a heart.

  • ViciousCallousness, your name suits you. While you are entitled to your opinion, you do not have to patronize Polydactyl for liking his performance. Nor do you need to call Joshua's performance as "second-rate showmanship". He's been playing for decades, improving and perfecting his performance. Sure, we all have things in ourselves to improve upon, but his performance wasn't "God-awful" just because he doesn't interpret a piece of music as you would have. I thought it was beautifully played.

  • Thank you so much for your comment Writerspen010. You are so very nice. Thank you. ViciousCallousness is living up to his name. He doesn't know that making beautiful violin sound is VERY DIFFICULT and to make the melody touches your heart is more amazingly difficult. I play piano and am taking violin lesson, so I know how hard it is (I still make squeaky and scratchy sound... not good).

  • Your welcome! We Joshua Bell fans have to stick together :)

I too play the piano and violin, and know how difficult, though rewarding, it is to learn and play a piece accurately, but also with an emotional connection to the piece.

    Good luck and have fun!

  • Polydactyl13, from the way you speak anyone would think that Bell had achieved some sort of mastery of this difficult instrument. Alas, that is not the case.

writerspen010 is only interested in bedding you, poly; I on the other hand am interested only in your musical education. Listen to me and realise the true nature of Bell's caricatural interpretations. His incongrous swaying and jigging, not to mention the risible facial contortions, ought to be all you need to come to judgement on this man

  • Whoa! Excuse me? I'm a girl for God's sake!

Anyway, the point: His "incongruous (which you spelled wrong) swaying and jigging" and "risible facial contortions:" only prove how into the piece he his playing. If you watch other musicians, you will notice they do things of this sort when they have an attachment to they piece they're performing.

Again, everyone is entitled to their opinion. If Poly, I, and others enjoy his playing, let us enjoy it in peace and stop watching if you don't like it.

  • Woohoo... you go girl... GIRLS POWER :-)

  • TROLL! lol. Dude, seriously let a guy get into the music a little. So what if he's a bit of a showman?

  • You made me cry with your violin... you must marry me Joshua...

  • people criticise him for the faces he makes and although they dont make a good violinist it shows that he is totally lost in the music or just doesnt care what people think, probably both!

  • I dare say he doesn't care what people think, all the while there are enough of them who give him their attention and money.

His melodramatic, second-rate showmanship is utterly tedious to watch. It's purpose is to attempt to convince you that he has some clue as to what the piece he is playing is meant to be about. If you just listen to him playing you will see that he hasn't actually got a clue.

    God-awful, this was god-awful.

  • this is one of my top ten favourites on the violin repetoire!!

  • Both Joshua Bell and Midori Goto made good performances of this piece. But the thing is, each has his/her own interpretation. So you can't really say who's the better player.

  • joshua bell is my favourite violinist if you type in joshua bell hungarian dance on youtube all the people who criticise him further down will have to eat their words he does have a wierd bowing action but it obviously works for him

  • Yup

many people think that technique is everything

It's the music that they should better listen, not the technique

  • You must play so so excellent and perfect... I think he do a good job. He's not having sex, he's doing something better, loving the music. He has a contract. If u just be in his place, do u'll reject the contract? omg.. i don't think so. He do a excellent job and msic. Don't kill hm. Is a human, not a musical alien.

  • hahahah...u shud watch Goto Midori's rendition of this piece...ull be stunned and amazed that a piece like this could be played so beautiful and fragile....

  • you're talking about when she played chopin right? if so, i heard it and it was pretty good.

  • I don't understand what's funny about that joke. Bell played Vivaldi beautifully live here in New York about a year and a half ago. Your entitled to your opinion, but just get your facts straight. Bell also released a Vivaldi CD.

  • yea, i know he has a cd out. i just cannot get w/ him....i tried listening to all his cd's...didnt like them at all...the only song i like by him is tizgane. he owns that hands down.

  • @airplanelova93 And who the **** is VanessaMaeFan18 to post critiques on anything? Guess the name says it all...whoever adores Vanessa Mae's frequent if not recurrent crimes against classical music should have no say about Joshua Bell or classical music in general.

  • Im amazed he can keep the bow on the strings with all the bldy contortions he goes through. Gingold didn't teach him to do that! If I close my eyes I think he is decent to listen to - he is no Leonid Kogan, though, that is for certain.

  • lol i know right! he like sweats and makes that face like its so painful. lol lol!! yea, i agree w/ you about hes decent when u close ur eyes. as for kogan, i only heard him play part of the violin concerto in a minor by shoshti. im like, WOW!!! i do not know nothing about him at all. is he fantastic like heifetz, perlman or oistrakh?

  • get on youtube and type in "kogan paganini" - frigging unbelievable! Enjoy!

  • @VanessaMaeFan18 Your ears may be busted. Were you high when you wrote this?

  • @VanessaMaeFan18 Get off the drugs...it's damaging your brain.

  • @VanessaMaeFan18

Hear yourself play. You will then hear the worst ever violinist.

  • the day joshua bell plays something like elgar violin concerto thats the day the whole world is gonna be in shock and ppl. will start to see the piece as something "not so hard"but then again i doubt he'll ever play the elgar.

  • he's probably already done it. He probably hasn't recorded or performed it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its not the most performed concerto. As you said, I am more than sure he can handle it.

  • Are you saying he does not have a good technique?

  • he has a good technique. it just so happens that a lot of his contempories r better in terms of ability, interpretation intellect and basically he sounds an average conservatory grad compared to a lot of those virtuosos out there.

  • i dont know why so many ppl bash on bell. i think its because his sound is so thin that some believe it comes from a student.

  • well...is "this" really a great violinist? I think no. Up to you.

  • Pretentious nick, pretentious man.

  • Sorrowful nick, sorrowful mind.

  • Nice one, very creative and clever. Wait... No. What do you study?

  • Oh, thank you. I study the pussy of women. It's an endless field of investigation. And you?

  • I think is unnecessary to keep proving your ignorance. Thanks!
