  • This kid can suck my dick! Seriously, this fool dont know how to review a retro game for sure. My opinion isnt based on nostalgia, Im a game collector and a big fan of the so called retro games and Tomba/Tombi! is a great title and platformer and on of the most badass character´s out there. Please, Stop send good games to these idiots, Send them to good reviewer instead! Derek is a fanboy of Nintendo and a kid that dont know how to review a piece of art, Thumbs up if you agree!

  • i love this game, its gotta be my favorite platformer! I didnt have any troubles with the crontrolls, i thought they were perfect

  • Usually the reviews here are way too lenient so it's nice to so an actual critical review for a change but don't think his game is particularly outdated. BTW, Don't you guys read Retro Gamer magazine? PS1 is now considered retro.

  • Totally agree. Great game but it's definitely shown its age, whereas other 2D platformers from the era like Yoshi's Story or Rayman are still fresh and awesome.

  • You try flipping a pig

  • Does this game support the dualshock feature?

  • i used to play this all the time as a kid i think its wicked im going to pick this one up sometime

  • Mohamed= Chip

  • This game was an artpiece of it's time. The 'TOMBI' PAL version was even better - it had a cooler soundtrack.. and for some reason was 200mb larger on the disc..

  • OMG I LOVED this game when I was a kid. And hated it. Yes, the controls sucked ASS, and the save system sucked. But it was fun! I think I got to like 95% completion as a kid. Just soooo hard.

  • Wow. People need to chill out about this review. Not everyone is going to agree about everything.

  • This review is outdate.

  • I still don't see how its outdated

  • This game was my childhood!

  • man....this game is just awesome....

  • Totally respect your opinion Derek. Can I have the game or can I buy it from you? :)

  • CGR has an Atai/Colecovision/Sega fan, a Nintendo fan, a bunch of Xbox fans, but no true PS fan. Mark has some love for the console, but CGR needs a PS fan with years of primary gaming on the consoles. It also needs someone to focus on platform gaming. Just one person should review GameCom, Lynx, Tiger Electronics, Tiger R-Zone, Gameboy, Game Gear, games, etc.

  • OUTDATED? MAYBE YOU'RE OUTDATED!!!

  • I played the demo for an hour and still never beat it.

  • Good review. To those that are saying Derek only knows Nintendo, thats not true, there are a plethora of good reviews he's given other games, and alot of mediocre Nintendo games he's reviewed as such. Stop being fanboys, his opinion is fairly accurate: The N64 and PS1 are in a no-man's land right now between retro and out-dated. You guys did see that he lumped the N64 in there as well right?

  • Tomba!2 is da bomb!

  • does anybody know the name of the opening tune?

  • If you ask me, Derek, I don't believe in the word "outdated". ;)

  • if i remeber this came with a demo of twisted metal on the same disc

  • Why is european box art always loads better?

  • The controls are somewhat awkward, but it's not very difficult to adapt to the game's system of movement, either. Derek, at least let us know if you gave it a sporting try and didn't just play through the demo areas, like the footage makes it seem.

  • This guys reviews are always terrible, he obviously wasn't born after 2000 but he certainly has the opinion of someone who grew up on modern generation consoles.

  • @TheGamerr Derek is a nintendo man, anything other than nintendo he doesnt really know or care about.

  • @timmoobeans then he shouldn't be a reviewer, tha't like a vegetarian who's a food critic and is reviewing a mcdonalds meal,it's going to be nothing but a thumbs down.if he knows and likes nothing but nintendo,he shouldn't be doing this.not only would he be giving a bad review on good non nintendo games, but he would be giving some nintendo games the thumbs up that it didn't deserve, like he does.

  • @neobogard lol ok. classic case of somones opinion not matching yours and deciding he's bad. if you dont like it dont watch it :S

  • @timmoobeans That would explain a lot of his other reviews, but you'd think the guys working at cgr undertow would let someone else review games like this. Maybe they'll wise up after reading the comments this time.

  • @TheGamerr your saying they need to change the reviewer purely because a minority dont like his reviews? lol. they cant please everyone all of the time buddy. and its all about opinions, so if you dont agree with it, dont watch it. theres tons of people who appreciate his reviews. Im sure CGR would love to hear some of YOUR reviews...

  • @timmoobeans I think they should pick who reviews what when they have someone who could have a bias towards a certain game like Derek, who I hear is mainly a Nintendo man. Also, you say minority but... have you seen the like to dislike ratio lately? You just seem butthurt for whatever reason, you'll get over it.

  • @TheGamerr you know your right, i will get over it. in fact i was never really under it. who reaaallly cares? lol like seriously who gives a shit what you think about a review? and who gives a shit about my opinion? just watch the vid, if you dont like it, watch a different one or make your own, better one. simples

  • @timmoobeans That was a nice attempt to cop out of the discussion we were having, but the only issue was you do care. Otherwise, this little conversation would have never began, nice way to have a spine buddy.

  • @TheGamerr you think being able to argue on the internet gives people a spine? or makes them a tought guy? Yeah i care about the fact that people are always slaggin stuff off on here, just because it doesnt match their opinions or they dont like it. . What i dont care about is what people like you have to say. and what everyone else doesnt care about, is what I have to say lol. there anything else you wanna get off your chest, or can we both get on with our lives? its gettin borin...

  • One of my all time favorite games!

  • why controles were bad? if I as a 12yearold could play it no problem with no frustration what so ever then it means they were good :) i think that your expectations Derek are to great :)

  • I really liked this rare game, but yeah the controls were kinda bad.

  • I WANT GEN BACk!

  • Wow, I couldn't disagree more with this review?!

  • Its my OPINION that Derek's opinion sucks. Before even viewing the video, I simply scrolled down, looked at the like / dislike bar, and realized Undertow butchered yet another retro review. Like the Cybernator review, you guys at undertow just simply can't review retro games. No different than an RPG fanatic trying to review a new soccer game.

Also: Klonoa and Tomba were released in the same year.

  • @mangaas so your saying avgn does a better job reviewing retro games, why be he's funny. I'm sure you watch avgn's videos and think their amazing, but don't you realize the only reason he became so popular was because he was negative. So I guess your saying AVGN can't review retro games because he can't say anything nice about them.

  • @getsomegames

"so your saying avgn..." No I'm not saying anything about AVGN. I'm talking about a CGR Undertow review of Tomba. I think you're either responding to the wrong person or having an argument inside your own head. not sure where you pulled that AGVN comparison from.

Tomba was an amazing platformer for its time, that still holds up VERY well to this day. Innovative quest system, puzzles and world to explore, that didn't feel like another linear left-to-right platformer.

  • @mangaas what? I'm confused. Why isn't derek qualified to review a retro game? He's done plenty of retro reviews before, and people seemed to like those!

  • @shaxam1029

I don't know if you've actually played Tomba, but the game isn't difficult or "cruel" in the least, nor are its enemies difficult. Tomba isn't some hardcore platformer that's known for being even remotely difficult. Anyone who plays this game and complains about the controls (which are fine) or the difficulty, probably shouldn't review retro games, which tend to be... well, A LOT more unforgiving than Tomba.

    Tomba is actually quite easy.

  • @mangaas I agree, Tombi was ridiculously easy; in fact I would probably say that's the only thing I would change about the game.

  • @mangaas Way to go. You openly admit that your opinion is based not on the video's content, but on the feedback from other people who have viewed it.

You have openly stated that you prejudged the video, then proudly announced that your opinion is meaningful and relevant, while Derek's is not, without giving any reasons.

Worst of all, 25 other idiots proudly lined up behind you, not realizing that this line was for the firing squad.

    Congratulations, you stupid, arrogant buffoon.

  • @TheSmackerlacker

Incorrect, my opinion is actually based off of the video itself. The like/dislike bar is simply a way of getting a general consensus on the videos content prior to watching. If its got a lot of dislikes, it usually reflects the poor content of the video.

Also: I replied to someone else explaining EXACTLY why this review is misleading. I don't feel the need to write out an essay explaining everything he got wrong in the review.

This is youtube, not debate class

  • @mangaas You're right, this is not debate class.

Funny thing about debate class though, the point is to teach you how to debate outside of class.

You seem to have not understood that.

You also seem to think that opinions matter. They don't. If you want to bash someone's opinion, you do it with facts. Otherwise, you're just expressing YOUR opinion, which is no more valid than that of anyone else, in which case you should shut the fuck up.

Go flame someone else. I like Derek.

  • @TheSmackerlacker The fact of the matter is Dereks bashes the game because he percieved a fault in it that virtually no other person has ever expressed, and it was blatantly obvious from the content shown that he really hadn't invested much time into the game at all. If someone finds fault in a game due to their own incompetence at playing the game then others have every right to point it out.

  • @ParakoopaPete That is a complete lie, from beginning to end. None of it happened, none of is true.

  • this game rocks

  • You should really cover Tomba 2!!! it is excellent and much better than the first!

  • I always thought it was pronounced Tome-ba...oh well. This one was done justice by its sequel. The second one was what I felt a perfect game.

  • Loved this game back in my childhood days.. Spend countless hours on it..

  • Wow same here......I forgot about those discs lol

  • this game was awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. loved this game.

  • @delli620 here here. Well said. Ifeel the same.

  • when i was in highschool, i was deeply into playing nes classics i could never beat as a kid like metroid and kid icarus and was happy cause my local video game store was selling them at $8 each. Now days, i get that same feeling from ps1 games i download on my psp from the playstation store now.

  • omfg,that thumbnail was a nostalgia overflow!

  • I totally forgot I played this as a kid.

  • I loved Tomba 2, that game, I think, was superior to the first in almost every way.

  • Anybody else starting to hate Derek's reviews?

  • This was my favorite ps1 game of all time. My dumbass traded when i was 12, only to find out its a $80 game now. F***

  • @FaultOfAGamer At least you got something for yours, my dad threw mine out along with Klonoa Door to Phantomile (another rare PS1 game) and various other games when he was cleaning out my room one evening.

  • @ParakoopaPete Oh man, if that happen to me back then I'd probably shed some tears get angry and break some s***.

  • @FaultOfAGamer I did lol.

  • he has a point, I can't count on both hands the number of ridiculous deaths I had because Tomba can't jump without feeling like he was weightless, and that laughing forest with the camera that wouldn't allow you to see the bottomless pits below...FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • That's funny, I don't remember the controls for this game to be so bad. And Derek was quite repetitive in this review, that's why I disliked the video, NOT because I didn't agree with his opinion. It was just poorly redundant, but respect his opinion... he's a reviewer, duh, it's his job to have an opinion.

  • Context is an interesting thing. The first Super Mario Bros controls are dated compared to Super Mario Bros 3 and World, however that game was groundbreaking for the time and made a huge impact on the video game industry. As a result we are able to forgive the dated controls due to the fact that at the time it was great. Tomba! doesn't have any of those luxuries. Few people bought it, it didn't revolutionize anything, and for the time it still wasn't the best.

  • derek is easily my favorite reviewer on undertow, but i strongly disagee with some of the negative points he made here...

  • i remember this game on a playstation underground demo disc

  • @poncho828 Me too!

  • Are you gonna review AZURE DREAMS???

  • TOMBA!!!!!!!!!!! WWWHOOOOOOO i played this Tomba 1 and 2 on ps 1 before

  • tomba 2 is much better

  • An opinion's an opinion, but this is the first time I've strongly disagreed with CGR.

  • WTF, the control is just fine D: and this game is quite good. I think you are just a sucky gamer. If you can be called a gamer at all, poser.

  • I never bought the game, but I used to occasionally play it on one of the many PlayStation demo discs that you used to find in video game magazines back then. I thought it was pretty fun, personally, and I also thought Tomba might turn out to be the new Mario. That obviously didn't happen, but I don't remember the controls as being a problem back then. Granted, it's been several years since I've played it. Time for an HD remake?

  • Derek's right. The controls haven't held up well, and if you're used to them, that won't bother you. If you're playing it for the first time, like Derek seems to be, it's horrendous. There's really no need to reply to an intelligent and fair criticism with "fuck you derek." Unbelievable.

  • I loved this game. I feel like buying it now.

  • I ´liked´ this video before watching it.

I never did that before, and won't do it again.

This game is a classic, having finished Tombi 1 and 2 just a year ago, I can honestly say that Tombi/Tomba 1 is a classic.

If only they made games like this in this day and age, I would be enjoying my Xbox 360.

I'd rather play on my NES/Megadrive/PSX, anytime, anywhere.

I respect you Derek, but you're struggling with the controls?

Have you played it longer than 5 minutes?

    I feel sorry for 'Chip'

  • Wow all that hate that i see in the comments is really pretty disgusting.

  • love this game. i heard it was coming out on psn but that was over a year ago =(

  • You guys need to review an xbox indie game shmup called "SHOOT 1UP"

  • seriously this game is hard. getting used to the controls is frustrating.

i find Tomba 2 the best.

  • Totally disagree with this review.

  • people needs to stop being a bitch down here

  • @MarkThaCat You're the smartest one here so far. Why can't we just accept opinions as they are? UGH!

  • @R1kuTakao Is the little baby butthut because somebody dared to have a different opinion on a game than you? Get over yourself there buddy!

  • dam this game was awsome i just wish my theaving brothe did'nt steel it to feed his habbit fucking acloholic.

  • The ps1 is straight up retro, also I remember really liking this game

  • Tomba 2 really is the best/classic one.

  • i should have never sold my copy of this game years ago, was one of my favorite games ever!

  • ok people stop hateing on the guy, i loved this game aswell but he can have an opinion, and the controles are fine if you wer young enough to get used to them but maybe he didnt play it and has goten so used to the standerd platformer controles its just a big change for him

  • dud trust me i played this game fairly recently and i found nothing wrong with the controls at all and unlike most the people complaining here i am not blinded by nostalgia. You really did make some fair points here and there but focusing the entire review around controls you are not used to is a terrible way to review the game, everything else like the fantastic music and creative level themes is swept under the carpet good job

  • Derek is right. I bought this game when it was new and played it for a LOT of hours, most of which was time being stuck and VERY frustrated trying to figure out what to do next. I didn't buy the strategy guide and didn't have the fledgling internet of the time back then, so I was on my own. Ultimately I never did finish the game, which is sad. Everything Derek said about this game rings true to me and what I remember from my own experiences with it 13 years ago.

  • I believe that it's unfair to review a game that's almost 14 years old with today's standards. The controls were perfect in my opinion and the game was almost addictive. In fact, I still play this. I also noticed that Derek played only a small part of the game, so it's inevitable to misjudge Tomba. In the end though, with my apologies to Derek, I have to press "dislike" button...

  • derek... ASK TO LEAVE! YOU ARE A KID, YOU ARE NOT SKULL, ASK TO LEAVE!

  • Disastrous today? All of the games that I care for this gen are based on older gameplay. Demons Souls and Binding of Isaac!

  • For you assholes out there, Derek was spot on for this review. He gave evidence to prove his opinion. And all you guys can do is bash him for his opinion. Even though it's his opinion, I have to admit, he's right.

  • I need to get this the graphics look great heard it was a good game

  • Wow, never have I seen so much hate on derek. Everyone loved him before this review.

  • I think many people are over reacting. Derek makes some excelent points, and it's a review, his own opinions. No need to go biting his head off.

Maybe it's just that many people, including myself, connected with this game during their childhood. It's understandable to get slightly upset of a game you once thought was perfect.

All I ask is that people calm down and have some common courtesy.

  • @MarkThaCat This is the first time I've seen this game and it looks awesome.

  • @MarkThaCat The problem with defending someone with "it's his own opinions (etc)" is that people talk down that opinion with their own opinions. Which means they should have an equal chance to share their opinions even though they may not in line with your own. I guess the point is that free expression can suck at times but it is important.

  • @MarkThaCat ffuck you pall

  • Please forgive him, he was drunk when he filmed this. This game is amazing.

  • Is this what the Mayan prophecy foretold?

  • please do poy poy!!! look it up!!!

  • uh oh Derek gon get killed

  • Betcha your penis is outdated Derek.........

  • I love how when someone has a totally differing opinion the video is instantly disliked...Talk about biased...

  • @Weirdreviewsnerd If he put forward some decent arguments it probably wouldn't get any where near as many, but the basis for his saying the game was bad was essentially him sucking at the game. Hell I played this game when I was 7 and found it ridiculously easy even then.

  • @MrScottfoulds *remake

  • fuck off this was one of my favorite games on the PlayStation it was platforming gold wish this and the sequel gets a hd for psn and xbla

  • Tomba! was a amazing game if this was on the psn i would buy it right away. The price for this game is very high. The lowest price i saw was $49.99. Derek you usually are spot on with this genre but this time I will have to disagree with you.

  • What in the world have you done!?

  • Come on, i barely got the game and it's like I was 3 years old again. I'm sorry that it wasn't great for you as it was for us. Go ahead and go play some PONG. Oh, that's right it's OUTDATED

  • I think this game and it's sequel are still amazing today and I still pull them out from time to time.

  • This review really offended me, I feel like someone spat on my imaginary babies face.

  • Hating on a 13 years old game, is like hating on a baby for being small

  • I remember this game. I really enjoyed it. I'm sure if i played it again i would like it out of pure nostalgia. Much of the dislikes seem to be people who took the negatives Derek brought up personally. Relax people it is his opinion. You like it? Good enjoy it. No need to wish "deaths" upon him.

  • Yeah, believe the fucking retard who can't pronounce Tomba correctly. FUCK YOU, DEREK!

  • Did Derek just give one of the best platformers of all time, a bad review, because it can be frustrating? I'm having a hard time processing this.

  • I hope this channel gets suspended.

  • @crashpro3 LOL

  • WTF, i used to have the demo and played it for hours. And the controls were awesome! The problem was they didnt sell it anywhere.

  • @skulljoint Same! I looked everywhere for that game back in the day, but I couldn't find it anywhere...

  • My only complaint about this game is the difficulty, it's far too easy; especially the bosses. It's still a fantastic game though.

  • This is one of my favourite games of all time, my dad threw the disc away though I still haven't forgiven him for that.

I can see this video getting many dislikes lol.

  • This get the BTAMG award: Better Than Any Mario Game

  • Tomba 2 honestly improved everything, I'm lucky to own this game, sadly I threw away the case because it broke, I still have the game. I heavily recommend it for anyone who likes platforming and the second one improves everything so I recommend that more

  • @01Zipang

after just doing some research, I heavily recommend a emulator the value has jumped up and this surprises me

  • @01Zipang Honestly I feel the original has aged much better, the graphic style is kind of timeless whereas Tomba 2 is 3D which is notorious for aging less smoothly than 2D.

  • Fuck you Derek the controls are spot on.

  • Now do Intelligent Qube. I would donate IQ but it's a very valuable game.

  • plz do a tomba 2 review that is one of my favorite games ever :D

  • Comment removed

  • What a hard game to find

  • I absolutely love this game. Hopefully it gets a PSN release.

  • Last.

  • cool game :D

  • This & Tomba 2 were my favorite games ever.
